Notes From Saturday Night Practice

August 3rd, 2019

Fans were fired up for a rare Saturday night Bucs practice.

America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, kicker Matt Gay and linebacker Devin White showed up tonight.

For those who chase their dog out of the house by hollering and throwing remotes over the urban legend that America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winsto, can’t throw a deep ball, it’s time to give your dog a hug and a treat.

* Jameis was sharp tonight. He threw roughly a 30-yard pass to Mike Evans down the right sideline that just dropped in the bucket. Hit Evans in stride as he raced down the field. Later, Jameis tossed a long ball into the far left area of the end zone that Chris Godwin reached out and pulled in for six.

* Matt Gay continues to impress. While he missed a short kick (Joe wags a finger at him), the dude put on a show. Gay kicked a 62-yard field goal with loads of room to spare. Joe is telling folks, you don’t have to see Gay to know he is kicking. You can hear it. BOOM! It sounds like fireworks in the distance.

* Though Bucs officials had told Joe that rookie linebacker Devin White has been a total terror on defense, he hadn’t yet caught Joe’s eye except for a near blitz sack of Jameis. That changed tonight. Late in practice, White had two tackles for loss in consecutive plays. The first one White flew to the near sideline for a tackle of Peyton Barber and on the second play he blew up a ballcarrier inside.

* Ali Marpet pancaked (looked like Anthony Nelson but not positive as these guys have their jerseys rolled up so you can’t really see the numbers) in a short-yardage run so bad Roger Goodell would want to suspend him.

* Ndamukong Suh was on floppy hat patrol. Arians said after practice it was just a veteran’s day off.

* Blaine Gabbert hits Scotty Miller square in the numbers near the left sideline and the pride of Bowling Green couldn’t hang on. Arians had some words about this after practice.

* Jameis goes back to pass and is deep in his end zone. No one open. So Jameis channels his inner-Mike Vick and runs past the 25-yard line.

Some positives from training camp! And news about Devin White! Great post Joes.

  2. DooshLaRue Says:

I guess Ndog must have sucked all the Koetter out of his man crush this afternoon.

    Good for you little doggy!

  3. Rod Munch Says:

I saw a video of that 62 yarder by Gay and it would have been good from probably 70 – and that was having to lift it over the line. If he can perform like that in the regular season, then wow, what a weapon. Long ways to go.

  4. NOSBOS Says:

That’s what makes this offense extra dangerous. Fameis can scoot when needed.

  5. NOSBOS Says:

    What a weapon indeed Rod.

  6. Jordan L Says:

Wait what?!? I thought Jameis sucked and had no accuracy…….. at least so I’ve heard from some of you.

  7. BA FAN Says:

Thanks for this very positive news, Joe. Jameis has definitely benefitted from these intense, physical practices and iron has sharpened iron which improved our Defense to the point I feel they can reach Top Ten Defense status like our Buc’s heritage. The Bucs were 3-4 pioneers back in the ole sombrero days and we later had a great decade of Top Ten Defenses with Sapp, Brooks, Lynch, and Barber.

    Kobe Faker

With a leg like that Im calling him the cannon..Fitting with the team name..When there are 4 seconds left on the clock and its a 69 yard attempt the stadium yells

    “wheel out the cannon!!!!”
If that dude really does have a leg like that holy crap, that would be total redemption for the aguayo pick in my book.

I know there’s been talk of Winston struggling this camp and that he’s been tweaking his mechanics… And I gotta say.. his release looks a bit quicker so far. Even on the bad throws I’ve seen it seems to be coming out of his hand quick. Hopefully he gets used to the new swing soon and can get enough time in the pocket to take advantage of our crazy good group of pass catchers.

  11. BucsBandit Says:

    LOLZ.

    Let’s get something clear…

No one has stated that Winston couldn’t throw deep balls or have accuracy with others…

His problem is he can’t do it on a CONSISTENT basis. So, of course, he can occasionally throw some deep balls that are caught. But that’s missing the point.

If you give ME enough attempts, *I* could throw some deep ball completions to Mike Evans and I’m not joking. The difference is I can’t do it consistently, and neither can Winston; at least he hasn’t been able to so far in his first 4 seasons.

  12. BucsFan727 Says:

Its going to be a good year for Winston. Glad hes changing that little two hand circle he does before he throws the ball. It should make him more accurate. People change. Life is change. Good or bad your not the same person you where. Winston works hard at his craft. He has a new coach THE QB WHISPER. And I want the Bucs to do good no matter who plays QB. I dont like his axx anyways. But Im goong to cheer my QB on. Hes a Buc and we can win with Jamies. Its a team sport go ask Aaron Rodgers how much he needs hes oline to hold up. Or his defence to get a stop on 3rd down. My glass is half full stop trying to spill my koolaid.

  13. Pittsshore Says:

This piece kinda contradicts the later BA article in which JW was supposedly throwing a bunch of jump balls. Side note/suggestion: don’t give the Intern Zach a day off. He does a much better detailed job on these practice recaps.

  14. Gettinthebucs Says:

@Joe my dog named Diesel thanks you for tonight’s update.

  15. BucDan Says:

Gay hit consecutive long kicks of 45, 52, 57 and 62. As the Joes pointed out, he missed a short and also a long when in hurry up, kicking for the win situation. That did bum me out, but dude has a bomber connected at the hip.

  16. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Go ahead and give him the MVP. Jameis Winston is the MVP this year.
