“No More Deer In The Headlights Factor”

August 28th, 2019

Needed.

With the San Francisco-Tampa Bay kickoff in 11 days, Joe is in full 49ers study.

As Joe wrote Monday, what an incredible preseason game it was Saturday in Kansas City for the Chiefs and Niners.

Jimmy Garoppolo left Bucs fans a bit dejected. Joe was hoping to see the 49ers QB repeat his horrific performance the week before. Instead, he looked strong while forced into a silent count at deafening Arrowhead Stadium, finishing the first half 14-of-20 for 188 yards and a touchdown, a beautiful 20-yard touch pass over the top to running back Matt Breida.

NBC Sports film guru Chris Simms, the ex-Bucs QB, saw a different Garoppolo, too, but added there are many issues in his game.

“There was no more deer-in-the-headlights factor with Jimmy Garoppolo,” Simms said. “Now am I going to sit here and just go, ‘Oh, it was perfect. I feel a whole lot better about everything?’ No. Not totally. But at least I felt like he saw the field well. He didn’t just throw some balls up to an area, ‘Oh, gosh, the pocket’s collapsing; I’m just going to throw it there and hope it works out. Oh, it was an interception or it was a dropped interception [like two weeks ago]. This week, I think he knew where to put the ball when he was in danger in the pocket.

“His feet are messed up,” Simms continued, saying Garoppolo is often too flat-footed, which causes him to lose control of his throws.

Essentially, Simms said Garoppolo holds the ball too long because he appears to not like the checkdown nature of the Kyle Shanahan’s offense, and his technique isn’t sound enough to let him recover the way he should.

Of course, this comes back to pressure on the quarterback. Nearly every QB is damn good with no heat on him.

Yeah, the Bucs are going to blitz, but somehow they’re going to have to generate pressure with a four-man rush. Joe’s hoping Carl Nassib wakes up from his preseason slumber.

i like our DB’s to win their 1 on 1 matches vs the 9ers WRs…..

VHG,CD and MJ will get the job done….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  2. Ben real Says:

Jimmy was rusty his first game back … well over a year since he played last … as much as I love my bucs I’m a realist and I just don’t see the Bucs putting much on the board against the niners … 24-14 San Fran

  3. Bucnjim Says:

Nassib has two tackles and two pressures in the short amount of time he’s been in the games. That’s also 4X the stats McCoy has in Carolina.

  4. chris L Says:

why is there so much disdain for nassib, joe? it is preseason and he has played well before. nassib is not the issue for this team. the fact the was dropped by the browns is so irrelevant. how many bucs have we dropped that went on to great careers (especially the last 10 years post-chucky).

    Bucnjim Says:

    ——————–

He hit the QB two times BEFORE Mayfield threw the ball.. even more important. Hopefully, he gets the takedown on those plays in the future. I saw him dominate the guy in front of him when he was given freedom to just rush the QB. Nassib will be big this year.

  6. JimmyJack Says:

Nassib should be called out after his last game. Twice he wiffed on sacks. That is a grand total of zero plays when he was in position to make 2. One time he wiffed on third down and the drive ended in three points. That’s called handing away points.

There are no consolation prizes in the NFL. You have a chance toake a play and it needs to be converted. Otherwise you not good enough.

  7. Bucnjim Says:

Yes should have had the sacks but the fact remains he was consistently beating his man. There is something to be said about winning the one on one battles.

  8. JimbobBucsFan Says:

This critique of Jimmy Garoppolo sounds familiar. It sounds like some of the things that have been said about Jameis Winston.

Maybe the 49ers will be a real challenge and we can be happy to win our first game because we earned it. Maybe the Buccaneers can improve enough by beating the teams in front of them during the season and come out with a winning season. Maybe we will have a tried and tested team with a winning attitude and we can see a winning culture return to Buc fandom also.

  9. SCBucsFan Says:

Nassib isn’t Josh Allen. He won’t get love on this website.

  10. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Only thing more annoying than Joe complaining about guys not making a splash in limited snaps is the way he pronounces Nassib on the podcast

  11. JimmyJack Says:

Bucnjim……..To me it’s the same thing as if a WR beats his man then drops a wide open pass. Does he get any credit for beating his man?

If there is something play to be made and you wiff your about as effective as a guy on the bench.

We just need Nassib to play better that’s all. If we are having this same discussion after a loss in 10 days it will be a porblem for me.

  12. D-Rome Says:

How about Noah Spence? Can we take his picture off the milk carton yet?

  13. SB Says:

Anyone who played in the Pickem last yr and wants to play again this yr just go to the BSPN page that we played on and rejoin. Anyone who did not play last yr please ask Joe to allow me to post the link.
    Go Bucs!!!

  14. SB Says:

  15. Pick6 Says:

I think Jimmy G is roughly Ryan Griffin’s age, with all of 8-10 games more experience to show for himself. I think Todd Bowles can bait him into some dumb decisions

  16. Phil Says:

KC defense is way worst than the Bucs and that takes some doing.

  17. Buccernutter Says:

I just love all the evaluations and overreactions to accumulative 3 quarters of football in preseason with vanilla playcalling including a top 3 dl in cleveland that was evidently playing like they were in the playoffs.

  18. Harry Seawurd Says:

Hope Vita V is healthy…he destroyed the Niners last year.

  19. BucsNation08 Says:

Is there an update for Vita? Havent heard anything if he is on track to play or not week 1.

  20. doctor_berto Says:

Like Nassib but isn’t his contract up after this season? Josh Allen would have helped way more than Devin “Cant cover” White.

  21. Rod Munch Says:

I watched that game and the defense for both teams was terrible. On the KC broadcast they were just talking about how bad the corner play is and how it’s an open competition for who is going to be starting – and none of their guys looked very good. But it was as fun of a preseason game as there is to watch. The KC crowd was going nuts for the first half, felt like a big regular season game and the place looked packed.

Mahomes looked great, but he was throwing to guys who were mostly wide open, although they were still very good throws. Arians should just watch the film of this game and do what KC was doing on offense, because the 49ers had no clue what to do, or where to be.

  22. TSmitty3000 Says:

I remember reading where Arians turned over the roster his first year in Arizona. Ironically, he decided to stick with a bunch of marginal(at best) players in Tampa. Nassib is a backup at best. Gholston and Beau Allen should be fighting for spots on other teams.

  23. Wesley Says:

Don’t expect Nassib to repeat last years performance.

  24. Darin Says:

Lol. We will see how he plays when it counts. Not sure why anyone puts stock into a preseason game. Nassib plays hard all the time. He Will make plays you can count on that. Its some others I’m more concerned about.

  25. K2 Says:

I thought if a position like QB or Line had a bad preseason game ….yell the sky is falling and don’t stop running until you past the cliff (point of no return).

In reality I have O-line concerns as well…but think the panic is way overdone.

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Nassib gives the impression of a player who spent a couple years trying to figure things out, and then it finally clicked and he’s so hungry he won’t stop.

I have a feeling he and White will each have a lot of sacks this year.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

On a side note…I remember Chris Simms as being ‘flat-footed’ too.

  28. Rod Munch Says:

Nassib missed on a couple of sacks because he pulled up – and to me it looked like he was so scared of getting a flag he didn’t finish the tackle. That’s very easy to correct, just tell them to MDK the QB and for every highlight of him killing a QB he adds at least another million to his next contract. So don’t worry about a $15k fine and go knock the head off the QBs.

  29. BA FAN Says:

Both our Offense and Defense will have new plays for our first game taylor made to beat the 49ers. They will come in after seeing how the Browns torched our Offense thinking they have an easy win and the Bucs will light them up! Trust BA he always finds a way.

    .

I’m pretty sure that Nassib is an Arab name, and Joe is probably pronouncing it technically correctly. The way Carl apparently pronounces it is Americanized, and it took me a while to get used to hearing the announcers on TV saying it that way.

Anyway, I can’t wait to see him ball out this season and earn a new contract!
