Let’s See It!

August 23rd, 2019

Joe and NFL.com want splash plays.

This is going to rankle some, but Joe honestly isn’t out of line here.

Joe is confident Bucs rookie linebacker Devin White will be a good player. But through training camp and two preseason games, Joe hasn’t seen enough (yet) to suggest that will be the case. Joe’s projection is currently based on hope and hosannas thrown White’s way by the Bucs, who believe he’s the team savior.

(To be fair, White sure as hell flashed big-time in underwear football.)

There are maybe three or four plays White made in training camp that made Joe go “Whoa!” Other than that, Joe wasn’t sure if White was on the field. Standard rookie adjusting to the NFL? Probably.

And Joe is not alone in this. Take Chris Wesseling of NFL.com. He, too, has heard and read all the accolades about White. But Wessling hasn’t seen it. Yet.

Already entrenched as a starter, first-round pick Devin White will team up with Lavonte David to comprise one of the most feared inside linebacker tandems in the league. With the exception of a blitz that nearly hit home for a sack, White has yet to show up on preseason film. I want to see more out of him in this week’s clash with a pair of fellow former LSU stars, Browns receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry.

You know one reason Joe wants to see White blow up some Brownies tonight? Because the third preseason game is usually the dress rehearsal for the season-opener. Joe would love to see White carry momentum into the 49ers game two weeks from Sunday.

Also, Joe wants White flashing tonight because defenders drafted after the Bucs selected White have blown up opponents in preseason games.

Just look at what Devin Bush, a fellow linebacker with the Steelers, did to the Bucs in the first preseason game. And last night defensive end Brian Burns of the Stinking Panthers went wilding on the Belicheats (two sacks, two quarterback hits, five tackles and a forced fumble). Jags pass rusher Josh Allen had two quarterback hits and two tackles for a loss last night as well.

It would be so cool to see White splash Baker Mayfield. You know, like rookie linebacker Kwon Alexander did to Stewart McClown?

Derrick Brooks talks discipline and penalties, the Arians way and a whole lot more with Ira Kaufman on new episode of TAMPA TWO, presented by Caldeco Air Conditioning & Heating. A production of The Identity Tampa Bay and JoeBucsFan.com. Enjoy!!

  2. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

    Meh

He’s played two defensive drives, right?

Thought Joe didn’t watch Pre Season other than the Bucs…

  3. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Honestly, I could care less what the starters do tonight. Just stay healthy and show me the real stuff once the season starts.

  4. Rayjay1122 Says:

    I agree Joe.

  5. Bucdinthehead Says:

THIS JUST IN: Rookie doesn’t live up to full potential in first two preseason games with limited reps.

    Bucdinthehead—

Man, that was quite a take! How did you land that insight?! Man, hit takes like yours is why I come to JBF!

    White is obviously a bust.

  8. Hodad Says:

To small of a sample Joe, don’t panic. If you listened to the game last the they were saying how bad the Fins O line is. They gave up 5 sacks to us. Allen, Bush, White, all rookies will struggle when the real bullets fly, and they go against starters for a full 60 minutes. I’m more concerned with our young secondary then White at this point. Jameis also has only had one good drive this preseason with limited time. These games mean nothing. Let’s see what happens when there’s a game plan, and real game.

really hope he comes along because watching the Jags game was a reminder why you never pass up good pass rushers like Josh Allen… or maybe they thought we were flush there(sarcasm alert)

  11. Rayjay1122 Says:

This article is not claiming that White is a bust at all. It is saying that it will be nice to see something because so far there hasn’t been anything to indicate he will be great, good, average or lousy. He doesn’t have good or bad credit, he has No credit. So, it will be good to see him make a few plays tonight because so far we haven’t been able to see much other than an assist on a sack against the Steelers.

There are any oddities at MLB that go under the radar that he probably is doing good with such as setting the defense and making adjustments based on the offense audible but as far as splash plays and actually hearing his name called, there just has not been much to this point.

  12. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Bucs didn’t pick who Joe wanted prepare for constant comparisons to players who got drafted who play on a stacked d like Allen…

Wah wah Joe go spend some time with your cheerleader calendar and come back for the game tonight

  13. Rayjay1122 Says:

Freaking auto correct. Oddities = things.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You can’t have it both ways…..on one hand you don’t want preseason games and you definitely don’t want starters to risk injury….
And…..you want White to blow up in preseason…..

White will be fine….let’s judge him on a reasonable body of work.

  15. Lamarcus Says:

    I thought ppl didn’t care about preseason…….

  16. SCBucsFan Says:

White could get two sacks, an interception, three tackles for a loss and lead us to a shutout in the first half while learning Portuguese on the sideline and Joe would still think Allen was the pick. That won’t change.

  17. D-Rome Says:

It’s too early, Joe. We won’t really know until 1/1/2020. While I think this organization has been a disaster, especially under the Jason Licht reign of terror, it’s evident everyone top to bottom wanted Devin White. They can’t all be wrong about him.

  18. RustyRhinos Says:

We have a winner in SCBUCSFAN comment. Hit the nail on the head.

    Go Bucs!

  19. FireJasonLicht Says:

I wanted us to trade down and take Bush or a pass rusher. Have a bad feeling this dude us gonna be a bust. Smh oh well hopefully this will be enough to finally run Licht out of town bew contract or not.

  20. Destinjohnny Says:

Dev will make splash plays that will take your breath away.
Let’s see if he can take over a game.
    He didn’t in college

  21. Joe Says:

White could get two sacks, an interception, three tackles for a loss and lead us to a shutout in the first half while learning Portuguese on the sideline and Joe would still think Allen was the pick. That won’t change.

True! Not about to hide from that fact. Doesn’t mean Joe doesn’t want the guy to succeed. He’s a starter on the Bucs. Joe wants them all to be Hall of Famers.

  22. Joe Says:

Dev will make splash plays that will take your breath away.

Saw two he made in a Saturday night practice at the Glazer Shed. Saw several in underwear football.

Is that when Dotson decided not to block him and/or turn a blind eye? Impressive!

  25. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

Wait a second, Joe is absolutely correct in saying that Josh Allen was the correct pick. White isn’t even the correct Devin.

Last night Josh Allen completely dominated 1/2 of a NFL football game with one hand in a hard cast. He would have had two sacks if his hand wasn’t broken per Calais Campbell.

The announcer Joe Buck (no relation), practically nominated JA into the Pro Football Hall of Fame after one half. Fitzpatrick and the Dolphins could do nothing. JA was every where on the field, reminding me of Derrick Brooks in his MVP season.

JA was dominating the left side, then the right side and chasing Fitz out of the pocket. The problem Jags opponents are going to have is triple teaming JA and ignoring the other numerous studs Jax has.

When Allen left after the 2nd half, Fitz and the Dolphins were able to move the ball down the field and execute their offense.

Buc fans should be sick to their stomachs that Gump passed on the most dominant defensive player I’ve seen in decades.

Keep in mind that he whiffed on the 2nd round pick as well. Choosing SMLB from Central Upper Northern Michigan Fukawi’s over Treyvon Mullen the MVP of the National Champion Clemson Tigers.

Who can forget that Gump traded the 70th pick in the draft for two practice squad guys. The NFC Champ Rams now have the best RB in NCAA football history. They now have the foundation for a NFL dynasty.

The rich get richer and the Gumpster Fire gets a secret, hush-hush, back door deal that extends our misery for the next 5 years.

  26. DB55 Says:

If you couldn’t recognize Josh Allen’s bend as elite you have no business on an nfl franchise especially as a gm. Middle linebackers at #5 overall is just dumb. Luke kuechley he is not. Dude admitted he doesn’t know how to drop back into coverage I mean COME ON MAN

But of course wtfdik (except everything proof be shown daily)

  27. SCBucsFan Says:

DB55 the argument has been beaten to death but the team needed edge and a MLB; which one is easier to evaluate and have for the team for the long haul? White isn’t sexy, he will just get the job done and done well. Why dont you and others wait to see how things pan out before crowing.

  28. Joe Says:

Is that when Dotson decided not to block him and/or turn a blind eye? Impressive!

Nope. White came racing across the field twice to make tackles along the far sideline. Looked like Derrick Brooks.

  29. thomas farkas Says:

Count me in as one who thought that Allen as DE should have been the #1 pick based on his talent and playing a position of greater importance! White will have to be a perennial all-pro to offset what impact a good DL can do to change the fortune of this D!

  30. $acbuc$ Says:

Joe I know I ain’t the only one that noticed Donovan Smith getting put on his butt by lil dudes he should be steam rolling. He got exposed in TC by Noah already but he protecting the franchise blindside. Noooo!

In the Pittsburgh Game Devin Bush sat him on his back side and he just a rookie. D.Smith been in the league years and rookies come in putting you on your butt.

In the Miami Game #90 I think I got his number right. He sat him down too.

Tonight he got Miles Garrett if he goes speed to power on Donovan its gonna be along night for US. Buttcakes for breakfast so tell JW to run for his life.

  31. DB55 Says:

    Looked like Derrick Brooks
    ———-
    Blasphemy!

  32. Bucamania Says:

Devin has barely played. Let’s see tonight. Still preferred Josh Allen but White will be a very good player, I have no doubt.

  33. German Buc Says:

DB55 – and that just a few days after the 40th anniversary of The Life of Brian. Classic!

  34. Buccernutter Says:

Mj Spence cappa and Vern are just a few that are really starting to looked improved after several years. It takes time. People have high expectations because he is such a high pick but lsu alumni have suggested he’s the best player in their history. Basically I’m just saying if anyone is suggesting ANYTHING yet it’s really ignorant.

Man the NFL is all about short term memory. If you utilize all of the sample size of players instead of the last play it’s so much easier to get a better evaluation.

I thought he would flash last week but it’s gonna be tonight. I’m telling you he’s going to be elite. He’s smart and uses his head more than bush uses his instincts. He’s learning the system and will dominate.

    I can’t wait.

  35. LordCornelius Says:

All I know is he better be a pro bowl LB this year or it wasn’t a good pick.

Ed Oliver / Josh Allen or trade down for Brian Burns / Devin White /Devin Bush / Jonah Williams was what I wanted for the record.

  36. Crazy Old Fan Says:

Devin White will most likely be a GREAT player in this league – – whether he plays a lot or a little in his first pre-season will not matter – – – let’s see what he looks like in Oct/Nov of this year. I bet he will be a play-making wild man by then. Another quick learner like D Brooks was.

  37. PSLBob Says:

The verdict is far from in, but the Bucs selected White over Josh Allen (No. 7 1st round pick), who the Jags were lucky enough to grab. Allen was a beast last night in the game against the Dolphins. Regardless of preseason, he was all over the field. And he had splash plays getting to the QB and stuffing the run. Will be interesting to see how the stats for these two compare at the end of the season.

  38. tmaxcon Says:

white will be a serviceable player for 5 or 6 years nothing more definitely not a star… you can guarantee that…. not the right pick Allen was.

  39. 813bucboi Says:

    we’ll see….lol….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  40. Buccernutter Says:

Tmax you’re an idiot dude. Seriously haven’t seen someone more wrong more often than you.

  41. geno711 Says:

Boy wouldn’t it be nice on this article and the Spence article about not showing up for an exhibition game if there was a local site that helped out us fans with actual snap counts.

I just checked and 13 days ago Steelers Depot had every snap count of every Steelers player for that game. Maybe we can get the Steelers depot guys to help a poor site like Joe’s Buc Fan with those snap counts before he writes these articles.

I was a guy that would’ve liked Josh Allen as well over White but the narrative on the game tape is just a lot silly at this point. Let’s give them a little time.

I thought Quinnen Williams was Joe’s 1st choice for the Buc’s. He is still a 2nd teamer for the Jets and has not beaten out either journeyman of Henry Anderson or 33 year old Stephen McLendon. Neither did you mention Bosa.

Also remember there were a lot of so called knowledgeable fans and Joe’s on this site suggesting that the Buc’s should have drafted Darrell Henderson instead of the two-some of Jamel Dean and Mike Edwards in the 3rd round.

I hope that every time those guys are making plays, Joe, Ghost and others wll admit their mistakes.

  42. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

“suggesting that the Buc’s should have drafted Darrell Henderson instead of the two-some of Jamel Dean and Mike Edwards in the 3rd round.

I hope that every time those guys are making plays, Joe, Ghost and others wll admit their mistakes.”

What kind of plays can you make from the practice squad? Are they allowed to fill the Gatorade bottles?

Are those PS guys the ones that fire those crazy cannons?

Are they even allowed in the stadium or do they have to buy a ticket like all of us?

  43. geno711 Says:

Henderson played in the AAC. That is the league where guys help out firing the cannons. Dean and Edwards in the SEC. That is the league of NFL players. Very simple.

  44. Bucit Says:

Joe is just mad they did not pick who he wanted because his track record is so good and he’s totally convinced his guy would have been the answer.

  45. JimmyJack Says:

Holy crap these comments are hideous. Joe didn’t even really get it started either. Just said it’d would be nice to have seen some spash plays for White. Think we all agree with that.

I just don’t understand y’all’s mindframe. The freaking dude has been in for about 3 series. And some of y’all are coming to verdicts?

Honestly what the heck is the matter with you guys? I literally witnessed this same crap most of last year about VitaV…..Then the guy gets his wings under him and makes every last one of yall kneejerkers look like total bunch of incompetent fools………..”Live & Learn” aren’t an ol timey saying for nothing.

Continue acting fools and when proven wrong ignore it. When proven right boast like a baby that can read the futures. Some of y’all act like a pile of two Faced chicks. Get a freaking grip.

Tmax you’re an idiot dude. Seriously haven’t seen someone more wrong more often than you.

you must be living in fantasy land pal because the actual results prove I have not been wrong in a decade.

i was dead on about cancer93,lvd, glennon, murphy, k bell, d martin, dotson, d smith, marpet, predicting 8 basement titles and 4 regime changes…. so what actually have I been wrong about…. feelings are weak and irrelevant scoreboard results are all that matter pal and I have been far more accurate than I wanted to be….

  47. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Man we sure are making a huge deal out of preseason on here. You know football that isn’t real. also you are asking a guy to show us something that was in maybe a drive and a half his last two preseason games.

  48. Buccaroo Says:

This is like the democrats hoping for a recession. Leave White alone.

  49. JimmyJack Says:

What some of y’all are doing is holding our players to unobtainable standards. And when they dont reach them you roast them about it.

Then you find one outlier player who hit a higher standard as the only example……..One guy actually posted something you can learn from about Bosa & Q but it’s too easy to ingnore that aren’t it? How about a example that hits closer to home with Warren Sapp who was not that special from Day 1?

Some of y’all just seem to go out of the way to find something to cry about…….In the words of Loyal…..wah wah wah……..Then toss on a White jersey when it’s convenient. You are the #1 Bucs fan with the license plate to proove it……..on your red F350 that’s hitchless.

  50. Joe Says:

How about a example that hits closer to home with Warren Sapp who was not that special from Day 1?

That’s fair. Sadly, this organization has a well-documented recent history to fuel fans’ skepticism.

  51. tmaxcon Says:

    JimmyJack

how about the delusional optimists like yourself keeping your dribble in check until these guys actually earn it on Sundays pal…. that’s a two way street your driving on…. you and so many others are proclaiming these guys are great, starters yet they have not earned a damn thing. god forbid white get’s a sack in the first qtr of game one you and the rest of the over the top optimists will be unbearable for days and getting his bust made for canton over 1 damn play…. it’s a too way street pay you choose to give the right away and I make them earn the right!

hell 1 good year does not make a player great a decade of great plays makes a player great…. raise your standards bucfan….

  52. JimmyJack Says:

Very true Joe…..And most of that fuel in recent history has all been on the defensive side.

If somehow it miraculously changes this year you can have your savior in Devin White. I may very well anoint Todd Bowles as my savior.

  53. DCBucsfan Says:

Man I tell you, if i had it my way, I would ve even traded back to get Derwin James and bonafide Allen this year. So its very valid point of high expectations from the draftees. So lets just hope all the hype is true and will be PATIENT and root for the quick development of this players. I ve no problem about this article at all!

  54. KnoxvilleBucFan Says:

Lol how the hell ya gonna judge any player let along a rookie off of two or three series he’s played during the entire preseason? Cray Cray

  55. King C Says:

If only we didn’t have a history of passing of CB/DB Playmaker for an overweight two-down lineman,
Or missed on any number of DBs,
Or neglected LB while we drafted unneeded kickers, WRs, RBs etc
    Oh wait.

  56. Buccernutter Says:

Tmax long response for a fact.

You’re always wrong. It’s evident you’re insecure about it too lmao

    I wish I could fight u. 😘
