Mike Evans gets candid

Mike Evans opened up on national radio and it wasn’t pretty.

Joe feels for the guy.

The subject was the toll of losing and Evans explained that the month of January is eating away at him.

Evans was asked about how he might approach the offseason differently now that he’s a seasoned pro.

“I try not to think about football as much, obviously because I haven’t made the playoffs yet,” Evans said. “So when the playoffs are going on I’m kind of like burning inside a little bit. You know I still watch it because of my love of the game. Like it’s upsetting watching the playoffs and not ever tasting the playoffs.”

Evans added that he focuses on family, relaxing and wholesome fun in the offseason when the playoffs aren’t giving him agita.

The Bucs Pro Bowl wide receiver went on to talk address a comment about players battling the mindset that can come with incessant losing.

It seems he’s been around his share of late-season quitters.

“The thing about me is every game, no matter what the implications are, I’m going to try to win,” Evans said. “Doesn’t matter what. Last game of the season, I don’t give a damn. I’m going to try to win. But it’s just a different level for everybody else when you’re 5-10 and it’s the last game of the year, like do you really want to go out there and risk your body and things like that? So, I mean, I don’t know. We just got to  like start out fast. I don’t know. We start fast, we win September, and then I think things will be good for us.”

Through five Bucs seasons, Evans’ teams have won just 27 games. That’s ugly math for a guy so passionate about winning.

If the Bucs can’t turn it around this season, Team Glazer really should step up and get Evans some PTSD counseling before Christmas.

Let’s not be silly here. Not so much sympathy for Evans, who makes millions over millions, as much as it is sorry for the fans, especially those who pay to see this team play. For Evans, yeah it’s too bad Mike, so suck it and keep doing your part…and don’t do anything on or off the field ot hurt your team, and give things the best chance. He’s only been caring about this dumpster fire for a few years. Some of us have much time and care invested over 40+ years. But glad he cares.

  2. Magadude Says:

And on a more serious note…PTSD is a very serious issue, especially for those who actually do something or have done something to serve their communities (police) or country as a whole (military)…so guys like Evans can whimper moan about no playoffs while not voting and taking a knee for the National Anthem…PTSD takes a lot of innocent lives, and Joe has the right to make jokes about anything he wants. Just probably a tasteless attempt at humor in this town.

  3. Defense Rules Says:

I love that after FIVE full seasons withe the Bucs, Mike Evans still has that passion for winning. If he didn’t, it’d be rather dumb for the Glazers to be paying him $20 mil per year to catch 80 balls a year average. HOPEFULLY this is the year that the Bucs as a TEAM take a ‘giant leap forward’ (and not to the moon hopefully).

Magadude … I totally agree with you that PTSD is no joking matter, and especially in the environment we’re seeing developing (it’s not just our police & military who are suffering from PTSD any longer). Tying ME13 & PTSD together isn’t appropriate, for any reason.

  6. Bird Says:

That’s why I love about the NFL. There is still some loyalty in the NFL. Guys resign a lot of times with the team they drafted. Even if they are bad like the Bucs.

They don’t go sell out and play on an all – star team with their boy in a party city like LA , New York or Miami.

  7. Bird Says:

    That drafted them ^

  8. Gofortheface30 Says:

Jeez almighty Christ magadude. For a magadude you sure sound like a soy boy instead. You personify the reason why Chris rock said comedy is dead, can’t make a gd joke anymore without people’s panties getting soiled. I also Love how oh so dramatic you are with your 40yrs of fandom BS. Whooooo cares. What a self important tw*t statement to make. Lastly, the guy makes good money so therefore he shouldn’t speak his mind being around a bunch of losers? It’s now official, I hate people from both the left and the right.

  9. THETRUTH Says:

From what I read he said he plays hard even if last game of the season, but for others in team he doesn’t feel are giving that effort or are worried about getting hurt at the end cause they have a losing record. (Like DJ did)

I’m sure dumb Buc fans will start calling to trade mike Evans !

Joe you twisted his words I think

  10. Sport Says:

This proves the point about losing the season in the first month of the season. Remember when David said after his boneheaded hit out of bounds, that it changed the entire season. Weak!

This statement about starting fast proves we have a weak mindset.

There are other ways to win than starting fast. They just clearly didn’t have the mettle to do it.

This coaching staff and Band of Brotbers will bring a stronger character to this team and create an identity we can all be proud of!

    In BA I Trust!

  11. westernbuc Says:

My brother got PTSD in Iraq and we joke about it. Relax snowflakes.

The only time I’ve ever had a problem with Mike was him sitting down during the national anthem after Trump won. Mostly because he didn’t even vote, but also because he’s perpetuating a lie about America that I’m sick of.

But beside that, he’s been a consummate professional and a fantastic player. Top 5 WR in my opinion. Bucs aren’t losing games because of him. To me, he and Lavonte are in the same class. The Bucs aren’t missing the playoffs because of Mike Evans. Get this defense in order, get a decent run game, cut down on turnovers and he’ll get the respect he deserves.

  12. Bird Says:

Sorry. No one should be dogging mike Evans.
He is the anti – TO . I’m gonna get me some of me.

He is the real franchise player of the buccaneers. Our best player by a mile.
A Class act who does a lot for the community.

His story growing up as a kid with the domestic abuse of father against his mother which got his father killed eight in front of their house is pretty amazing

He wants to win so bad.
And More importantly he wants the Bucs franchise to be relevant again
He will break every buc receiving record by the time it’s all said and down

  13. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Feel bad for Evans being on this franchise that is like a one legged duck in water

  14. Bird Says:

Remember when Joe gave him a negative moniker “KY hands”
    😂

The double standard is hilarious. What double standard? It’s a nickname. Evans earned it with way too many drops in the 2015 season. He didn’t have a problem with the nickname. And Joe dumped it when Evans started squeezing footballs at a strong rate. –Joe
Yet someone else whether playing good or bad/ with suspensions still gets the coolest American flag moniker because joe has a crush on him. He moves the needle in joez pants …literally… Again, a nickname. Joe likes the nickname. Why is having fun with something some sort of problem?–Joe
    What a joke.

  17. Clodhopper Says:

I don’t feel bad for him. I hate the losing as much as him but I’m not crying a river over the emotions of a great player I have no personal respect for.

  18. D-Rome Says:

Mike Evans would be a top 15 player in the NFL if he had a top 100 player at the QB position. The team needs an upgrade in play at the QB position.

  19. bubba billy bob bo baggins Says:

These are sad words I read from Evans. Not because he has not been in the playoffs but because the author of this article seems to think he has a winning attitude.

  20. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

GoForTheFace – it’s not Maga’s fault. I mean he chose that name as a salute to a TV reality star and that guy is the biggest snowflake of all time.

  21. Ben real Says:

Mike evans is a hall of fame receiver …. don’t get mad buc fans when mike gets real tired of the losing sh$! and hauls ass when his contract is up or demands a trade… the way the bucs have played during his tenure he is really damaging his chances at the hall playing losing football …. if the Bucs have a losing season I pray he asks for a trade …. he is going to be a legend if only he can get on a winning team

  22. Pete Mitchell Says:

I think the nicknames are classic JBF.

I’m always surprised at the level of vitriol they inspire. Let’s not forget about the raging debate over “The Den of Depression” that followed the one year the Bucs fooled around and went .500 at home.

Also, no one can say Mike Evans doesn’t want to win. You can question some of his actions/antics on the field, but (and I understand this is difficult in today’s culture) try to keep in mind he’s a maturing young man. He was in his early twenty’s with a huge spotlight on him. I can’t imagine what everyone would have said about some of my actions/antics when I was figuring things out, and I bet most others weren’t that much different.

  25. Dr. J Says:

Holy Smokes Batman!!! So let me get this straight, when athletes don’t care and are only on the team for a paycheck (C. Baker and B. Grimes to a lesser extent), the outcry is “get rid of them, they don’t care enough.” However, when other athletes express their frustration with losing and wanting to win, instead of applauding the effort and leadership, the focus is on kneeling during the anthem??? After countless explanations stating it is in no way a reflection of how players feel or view all service men and women???

Get a grip! For individuals who claim to be intelligent and have common sense, how some still remain uninformed is beyond me! Praying for the clueless!

  26. ChanEpic Says:

Magadude’s posts read exactly like I’d expect a Maga idiots posts to read. Dumb, dumb, stupid and dumb. It’s almost like they wear their stupidity like a badge of honor. Sad bunch they are. Mike Evans is a GEM and has done nothing but his job year end and year out. I’d venture to say he is a top 10 all time Buc and we should respect his time here.

  27. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

From the looks of ME’s hat, he must be painting houses in the off season.

Maybe, he needs some of those play off checks to make ends meet.

  28. Frank Pillow Says:

Let’s not make this about anymore than it is— the toll persistent losing takes on an organization and it’s fans. Inside OBP, losing like we’ve lost has allowed the sort of behavior Evans is talking about to seep into the very fabric of organization. It clouds a front office into putting the leadership onus on kids who haven’t earned anything in the league…which, in turn, allows malcontented veterans to slide (since there’s no true accountability).
Evans, like Jameis, David and even McCoy, never had a Hardy Nickerson-like figure to show them the way, to teach them how to set the tone and hold people accountable. It’s a shame too b/c the results speak for themselves.

  29. tmaxcon Says:

Mike should have never resigned with bucs if he truly wants
to see playoffs…. 6 playoff wins in franchise history with 3 being sapp and grudens glory year. That is pathetic… mike history is not on your side pal only way you will ever taste the playoffs is by escaping the small market black hole that is Tampa…. dont worry you dont have to win to be considered a legrand in low standard bucville bucfan wouldn’t know what an actual legend is even if joe Montana was banging their wife…

  30. Magadude Says:

Good lord, so many folks up assuming things this morning, and up so early. Good morning! For those who don’t get the “maga” handle lineage, I won’t explain it again–has nothing to do with Presidential politics. But fire away–you look stupid. So many uncommon screen names too.

Now, you may note I never said a word about Evans wanting to win and lamenting losses being so bad…as much as NO ONE should feel “sorry” for a guy who living every American kid’s dream–when the fans are the ones out in the cold. I don’t want to hear any player whine…whether he’s Brady or Winston, Evans or McCoy. They are the privileged few–and good for them–it’s something all should strive for, as well as knowing of their right to cry, but no need to coddle them. If you don’t like the kneeldown comments, that’s your problem, not mine. Have a nice day…and Go Bucs!

  31. Magadude Says:

@Western Buc….”My brother got PTSD in Iraq and we joke about it.”

Yes, did your brother go out and mow down his neighbors? Did he murder his wife and hang himself? Was he the commander who had to go to a young man’s parents and tell him he just killed himself and three other soldiers because he lost it? Worse than that is telling a guy’s parent’s he got murdered by one of his own after surviving a combat tour. “Relax snowflakes”? Notsomuch.

Yes, you joking about it is allowed..and me saying it’s tasteless to joke about it in a forum is a valid point and is allowed too.

  32. tmaxcon Says:

    Frank Pillow

cancer93 and lvd are the reason the bucs don’t know how to win…. mentally weak soft captains for nearly a decade they were the undisputed leaders in the locker room….. nickerson is the only mentally tough linebacker this franchise has ever had..

  33. Joe Says:

Yes, you joking about it is allowed..and me saying it’s tasteless to joke about it in a forum is a valid point and is allowed too.

We should joke about it more. Humor is good. How many Bucs fans have PTSD from watching garbage defense and rotten kickers the past five years? Joe is starting to understand what the Bataan Death March survivors went through.

  34. Magadude Says:

Joe, not always good, and certainly but those who don’t get it.

  35. Old School Athlete Says:

I’ve been reading this site for years and it’s always been mystifying how the guys who work the hardest, contribute the most to the team and have the greatest desire to be champions, face the harshest criticism on this site. If everyone on this team worked as hard as Mike Evans, we would not be talking about going 10-22 the last two years.

  36. Magadude Says:

^^^^browser issues..correction: Joe, not always good, and certainly not good from those who don’t get it. Like you apparently. The Bataan death march was equally hilarious I suppose. Of course, you joke about “uber hassles” and refer to human beings as human feces. Just low class, IMO.

  37. ChanEpic Says:

@Magadude, your points are well taken. As for people making judgements on your handle and your explanation of the handle. People look stupid for not reading your explanation of a dumb handle. Get over yourself, no one actually cares.
Lastly, I don’t think anyone is feeling sorry for ME, at least I don’t. But I do think HE HAS A RIGHT to feel the sting of never going to the playoffs despite his stellar play. That’s human, and I want my team to feel bad about not getting to the top, regardless of their individual salaries. It’s about being the best.

  38. Magadude Says:

@ChanEpic….Joe wrote he feels for the guy. That is why I commented. Read. You referred to “maga idiots” without knowing what you’re talking about. You are allowed to look stupid…but I’ll say something if it involves a comment to me.

  39. Magadude Says:

All that said Joe, thanks for keeping us fed with all the news on the Bucs as we kick off a season tonight. Even if (at least one of you) are unpolished and unprofessional in your writings in some ways, it’s still good to get the info.

  40. Joe Says:

    Magadude:

Point is, people have gone through hell and back for generations yet they didn’t lose sight of what is right and what is wrong. Don’t recall that many folks who went through WWII and Vietnam “triggered” by humor to run into a Walmart and gun people down or mow down a crowd of pedestrians in a truck.

And Joe will not tolerate the modern-day Marxists and thought police to tell him what he finds humorous or what he doesn’t. Nor should anyone else.

  41. Joe Says:

    Thank you Maga!

  42. Magadude Says:

“And Joe will not tolerate the modern-day Marxists and thought police to tell him what he finds humorous or what he doesn’t. Nor should anyone else.”

We really have no choice but for people to say what they think…about what we think…I would agree that “thought police” have to have an impact on how we think or act afterward. For example, I don’t care who says what…but if I don’t like it…will say something…as I expect anyone would…and I don’t expect them to stop…nor should they expect me to….

No, was not suggesting your “joke” would trigger violence…that would be crazy…just that it’s not cool–or it’s insensitive or inappropriate at times. But per above, that’s not to keep you from doing it…just expect it hear disdain accordingly.

  43. Magadude Says:

    Okay…too many technical issues with words/characters today…so I leave with this….

“And Joe will not tolerate the modern-day Marxists and thought police to tell him what he finds humorous or what he doesn’t. Nor should anyone else.”

We really have no choice but for people to say what they think…about what we think…I would agree that “thought police” do not have to have an impact on how we think or act afterward. For example, I don’t care who says what…but if I don’t like it…will say something bacl…as I expect anyone would…and I don’t expect them to stop…nor should they expect me to….

No, was not suggesting your “joke” would trigger violence…that would be crazy…just that it’s not cool–or it’s insensitive or inappropriate at times. But per above, that’s not to keep you from doing it…just expect it hear it back for those who have disdain for it accordingly.

  44. ChanEpic Says:

LOL @ “Modern day Marxists” WTF does that even mean? There are people posting here that want to do away with classes and want the gov’t to own everything? Or, are you saying: “People who aren’t buying the modern day fascist leanings of the bigoted stupid GOP = Modern Day Marxists”? Republicans harbor some of the dumbest thoughts, not to mention people, that have ever lived. THERE ARE NO MODERN MARXISTS here, so stop the BS.

  45. July Joe Says:

    Mike Evans is a loser!

Stats are for losers and Mike Evanshas stats but not wins, so he’s trash.

Oh wait, THAT sort of insane logic only applies to Jameis Winston.

    Carry on.

  46. Clodhopper Says:

IMO No jokes should be off limits. It doesn’t mean no one should be offended tho. No joke will please every person every time. It just means any joke should have the ability to be spoken

  47. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

MAGA is the rallying cry for a the idiot president we have trying to ruin this country. For you to deny that your screen name has anything to do with him is simply not believable. Any thing that relates the Cheeto I want nothing to do with and no way would I use his dog whistle as part of a sports news website. The fact that you consider yourself a MAGA dude certainly says you are a Trumper!

  48. volbuc1 Says:

He is a great player and I hope he does great this year. However, no fan of his and could care less how he feels. They pay you to make the playoffs, so you should be upset that you haven’t been part of it and that goes for every Buc and coach. I feel for the Fans and them only!
