He’s Warming Up

August 6th, 2019

Steady improvement.

Look out folks, here comes Jameis!

As Joe noted yesterday, it seemed America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, is starting to heat up. Jameis had what Joe thought was his best practice of training camp. And it seemed the guy who calls the shots on the field for the Bucs agrees.

Yesterday, Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians offered his two cents on how Jameis is coming along, after a really terrible start to training camp.

“Yeah, that’s two really, really solid days,” Arians said. Monday “might’ve been his best day. I thought Saturday night was his best, but this might’ve even been better.

“I thought the offense came out with a little more energy than our defense did today and made some plays. We’ll grade the film to really see what really was out there, but I thought we had a lot of big plays, which I don’t like defensively, but I do like offensively.”

Mind you it is only Aug. 6. If Jameis is starting to get warmed up now, what sort of ceiling can he hit in, say, two weeks?

Joe hopes to see Jameis just as sharp this afternoon as he was yesterday morning. Of course, you just know Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles is chewing rear ends for his defense to get after Jameis.

Fun in August!

Keep working Jameis! We’re going to need your ‘A’ game this year.

    Déjà vu all over again

  3. Pittsshore Says:

Same story year after year Joe. A high school QB could fling it around when he knows he is not going to get hit. Just wait until games matter. Mr McGoo “Apples” will loose his mind on and off the field.

    Yawn.

  5. BucEmUp Says:

You haters are gonna be awfully quiet here in about 6-8 weeks when hes tearing it up and winning games

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Sorry Joe, but training camp … guys playing against the SAME other guys day-in & day-out … doesn’t tell me all that much about what the REAL games will turn out like. These guys are all PROs. How long can it take for a OLineman to figure out how to counter the same DLineman day-after-day?

It’s nice that the offense is improving now, but I think seeing how Jameis against the Steelers, Dolphins & Browns will tell us much more. None of those teams will show their whole hand defensively, but it’ll still be a better gage of our offense’s progress than the day-to-day grind of playing against our own guys. I hope that BA let’s him stay in for awhile though. Jameis has been a notoriously slow starter in games and I’d like to see him get settled in faster this year.

Two days of good practice, zero games, and again the “All World” comments show their dirty heads. Don’t we all wish we were a “middle of the pack” performer on our job, compared to all our competition, that earned the “top performer” award one time, and are still called Mr. All World Salesman. Of course we also ended up suspended for our “out of office” behavior, not including other questionable out of office behavior. But no matter. It could happen. But unfortunately, we don’t have the PR that some have.

Famous Jameis Winston! To hell with the Jameis Bashers! Go get em Jameis

  9. Go Bucs 72 Says:

@ BucEm the haters are always going to crap on 3 whenever possible, they are more than likely but hurt Gator fans. Just don’t even bother their idiotic nonsense.

  10. Jameis Almighty! Says:

2 typical posts above… 1 yaddda yadda Jameis is only good because the players are practicing together… Then a realistic one, Jameis doesn’t have to be a superstar, just good. Which my rebuttal is a good QB is a star!

  11. Pittsshore Says:

Practice against the Dolphins next week should be more telling of JW.

Keep it up. Was pleasantly surprised yesterday at practice

I criticize him when deserved but have no problem praising him as well

  15. Defense Rules Says:

Jameis Almighty! … Sorry, but a “good QB” isn’t a star. A “good QB” is what every NFL team should EXPECT their QB to be. If your employer paid you $20-$30 mil a year, I’d say that he or she had a RIGHT to EXPECT you to be GOOD.

Jameis has ranked in the middle-of-the-pack for 4 years now. That’s GOOD … as in average. But that’s not in the same arena with say Drew Brees, who I consider to be a true STAR. And BTW, Jameis is POTENTIALLY capable of reaching STAR performance levels, but he’s not there and he may never be there. I’d personally settle for a GOOD QB who shows consistent performance & improvement. But if not, then this team needs to move on. It’s all up to Jameis. Time will tell.

Must add BTW, it gets REALLY OLD hearing some commenters continually making excuses for him. And yes, you’re one of those. You want REALISTIC posts from others? Try opening your mind just a tad & getting REALISTIC yourself.

jameis is the only hope this minor league franchise has. it’s surely not going to because of the mature careful driver and fireworks expert jpp or the mental midget lvd or the real midget vh3bust or any of the garbage oline that will carry this team… jameis is the only hope this team has

  18. mark2001 Says:

Reality warning…don’t dare watch the Packers…or half the other teams around the league…don’t want to burst the bubble.

And stop being childish…we all hope Jameis becomes the best QB in the league…that we win the SB. But to anoint him…when he hasn’t done S in the league? When he has yet to be proven a guy counted on to be a quality starter in the league? Let’s make Jameis great again.. what a laugh.

  20. The Buc Realist Says:

To bad that the game manager qb does not get 9 practices against the defenses that he will lose to each game during the regular season to just “warm up”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So who is exactly getting coached up at this point???????????? BucEmUp is right that it will be quiet about the games in 8 weeks, but will be very loud of who the new GM will be and what QB they will target after the lost season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Uh no. Not everyone here on this site wants Jameis Winston to be the best QB in the league. Many want Winston gone no matter what he does on the field.

Many of us like to see people who have had personal issues redeem themselves and become better people and better players. Some of you just want him gone.

  22. mark2001 Says:

Wow…this many years and he hasn’t even proven he can hang out with the established stars in the league on a full time basis yet? Wow…ground control to major Tom.

Let’s hope it has been the coaches fault that it hasn’t happened. But time to get real…we aren’t in Oz, Dorothy.

LOL…he can use it on his application for Patrick Mahomes chauffeur

  26. Magadude Says:

Nothing new. Same old hot n cold Winston. Next week it will be questions over “what’s wrong with Winston?” and we’ll hear the excuses fly again. His play (results) and his behavior over a year is what will matter. He’s starting from the six foot hold dug for himself. So far, nothing different. Wow, he had a fantastic camp last year didn’t he?

  27. LordCornelius Says:

I don’t know if people remember but Winston was lights out last preseason and playing the best ball of his career.

All 3 of our QBs looked good. But Winston was at like 70% comploetion and super high YPA with basically no turnovers and bunches of TDs.

That suspension really killed the team last year almost as much as Mike Smith’s defense did us in. Fitzpatrick’s fluke start + Winston’s pressing Cincy bad performance lead to Koetter thinking Fitzpatrick actually could save him.

But Fitzpatrick was still Fitzpatrick in the end, and proved that the 2 game start was a huge fluke, as he had more INTs (11) than TDs (9) across 6 losses after that.

Here’s to hoping Winston starts this year the way he should have last year if not for his dumb4ssery Uber sh1t. But even better since we have a coach that historically is much better in red zone than Koetter ever has been, and no QB controversy to worry about.

    GO BUCS

  28. LordCornelius Says:

In terms of where Jameis ranks it depends on the stats.

Turnovers he’s been bad. Bottom 1/3.

    Everything else basically top 10.

Per ESPN’s QBR he was the 8th best QB last year.

Going by aggregate passer rating Fitzpatrick was better, because he had 2 games that made up 1/2 his TD total and he had no INTs in those games, even though he had 6 horrible games after that.

  29. Magadude Says:

@Dapostman….Jameis Winston should have had the personal issues he did. Had he had the common sense of a five-year-old, none of that would have happened. I have no issue with people of poor character and judgement being rehabilitated, but don’t do it my dime, and my time. I want Winston to be the best QB he can so my team wins. And personally, I hope he gets his act together…again, not on my time, my dime. That’s not hard to grasp, nor unreasonable.

  30. Magadude Says:

^^^should NOT have had the personal issues he did…they were ALL self-imposed.

  31. Dapostman Says:

@Magadud, so let me get this straight. You want Winston to be the best he can be so your team wins but not on your time or dime? This sounds contradictory to me and I’m not surprised because you talk out of both sides virtually every post. It’s like you have both sides covered to guarantee you are right at all times. You may be bi-polar or just bi. Might want to see a doctor.

  32. pick6 Says:

Jameis will have 6 games where he simply tears it up, probably in a span of 7 or 8 games. what happens before and after that annual hot streak will determine the bucs season and his professional future

  33. Cgmaster27 Says:

@dapostman that’s what clowns like maga do. They cover their backside in case jameis tears it up. And we all know he damn well doesnt want Jameis to succeed

  34. Eric Says:

Nothing irritates certain “bucs fans” more than Jameis performing well in practice.

Can’t wait for the heartbreak when he has a great season.

  35. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Oh yeah…I think Jameis Winston is GREAT!!! On and off the field!!! Especially off!!! And everyone should agree!!!

  36. Race to 10 Says:

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Winston looks bad in practice and the haters come out in force talking about how he’ll be gone by week 6, he looks good but same pathetic haters say it nothing but practice. Ignorance really is bliss because you don’t even realized how dumb you look on a daily basis.

  37. Magadude Says:

@Dampostman: What don’t you understand about “I have no issue with people of poor character and judgement being rehabilitated, but don’t do it my dime, and my time.” Why is that so tough to comprehend?

You said: “Many of us like to see people who have had personal issues redeem themselves and become better people and better players. Some of you just want him gone.”

Let me take it down past simple for you (and apparently cgmaster too): I said “I have no issue with people of poor character and judgement being rehabilitated, but don’t do it my dime, and my time.”

Maybe it’s better when you see the two statements close together so your mind doesn’t wander? To be more blunt, we don’t need to keep paying money to watch a guy “rehab” into a “better person and player.” After five years of “that’s just Winston”, his disgracing the Tampa Bay Area, his team, and a suspension to put a whole season upside down is plenty. You Winston lovers should take your millionaire character recovery program to a city that doesn’t care about character.

  38. Magadude Says:

“Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Winston looks bad in practice and the haters come out in force talking about how he’ll be gone by week 6, he looks good but same pathetic haters say it nothing but practice. ”

Why do you have to make these goofy things up? Take me for example, twice in the past two days, having seen Winston my own eyes-on at practice, I commented he looked good. Five practices now though. In two of those, he looked horrible. Called that too. Unlike the apologists, objective fans who care about their whole team, call it like it is. Oh, speaking of that….

Man, what a GREAT camp Winston had last year. Amazing, right? And how did that season go? Before his suspension or after? Before he got benched or after? Before he ignored coaches plays sent in, or after? Before he joined Eli as the INT king of the world…or after? Gee, can’t seem to remember…
