Bucs Make Initial Cuts

August 30th, 2019

First round of cuts announced.

The Bucs have to whittle down the roster to 53 men by 4 p.m. Saturday per NFL guidelines. The first wave of cuts was waved goodbye to already.

Below are the names of the victims:

Waived

S Lukas Denis

WR Matthew Eaton

CB De’Vante Harris

G Ruben Holcomb

OLB Farrington Huguenin

WR Anthony Johnson

OLB David Kenney

WR DaMarkus Lodge

ILB Corey Nelson

TE Scott Orndoff

T William Poehls

DL Elijah Qualls

T Brock Ruble

WR Spencer Schnell

ILB Emmanuel Smith

QB Vincent Testaverde

DL Stevie Tu’ikolovatu

G Salesi Uhatafe

Released

OL Josh LeRibeus

ILB Corey Nelson

Waived (Injured)

WR K.J. Brent

WR Cortrelle Simpson

The only two modest surprises here are De’Vante Harris and Spencer Schnell. Both had nice games in Dallas to finish the preseason. Harris had two passes defended and two tackles. Schnell caught just about everything thrown his way.

Joe thought surely those two were at least bubble players. Perhaps the Bucs cut them early so they have a chance to latch on to other teams’ rosters?

Schnell just got caught into a WR stacked team..I was really impressed with him..

  2. WyomingDude Says:

Kept Emmanuel Hall over Schnell??? Know they liked Hall in the draft, but dang Schnell PROduced. Hall for cut once already this season.

  3. K2 Says:

    Really liked Schnell!

  4. MadMax Says:

Yeah, Schnell will be good somewhere else….very impressed with him….if only we werent so stacked there, but its a great problem to have.

As long as we’re keeping Hudson, Dare, and D line O Connor (and of course the usual) then im good. Kind of surprised on Stevie T, he got some good push up the middle last night. But maybe Vea is healing well and O Connor just edged him.

  5. MadMax Says:

At least Testa got tested and is out…man what a disaster.

  6. Bucsfan1988 Says:

Schnell is gonna get claimed by someone to their team. I know we would love to see him get back on practice squad. He is the true Adam Humphries 2.0

  7. Clw JB Says:

Greg Auman is reporting Ledbetter was waived injured- would hate to see that -thought the Saints former OL might make it – must be going with the UDFA kid Bailey at backup G, he was projected as a mid round draft pick

The GM has had his misses – but they do have a knack for the UDFA crowd

  8. Sarasota Garey Says:

    I likes Harris .

  9. Joe Says:

    Kept Emmanuel Hall over Schnell???

Not sure if this is the case or not, but keep this in mind: Learned a few years ago that unless a guy is a starter or a guy who is expected to take a lot of snaps on offense/defense, he better be able to play special teams or he is in danger of getting run.

That may be a factor in play here.

  10. Pickgrin Says:

Hopefully Schnell and Johnson will clear waivers and find their way back to the Bucs practice squad. Wishful thinking probably….

  11. Bucsfan1988 Says:

Sarasota Garey, Harris DROPPED 2 interceptions last nite. That killed him!

  12. Howard Cosell Says:

At least we know that these are performance based cuts and not the political entitlment we’ve had under Lovie and to a lesser degree Koetter.
Face it….tm@x was right: Both of those coaches had to walk on eggshells around McCoy and his safe-space entitlement….mainly because the glazers had McCoys back…..huge, huge idiotic absentee-owner type mistake putting so much faith in McCoy and thereby generating a toxic culture.

At least they finally learned their lesson and turned the keys over to a real football mind in BA

  13. Howard Cosell Says:

Not that the glazers are necessarily absentee owners but they ran the Bucs like you would a McDonalds or a boyscout troop.
A pro football team needs to be run more like a swat team

  14. Howard Cosell Says:

Life or death based on performance. Absolutely no entitlement or mental weakness allowed

  15. rrsrq Says:

When and where is Spencer going to play? BA already said Godwin not coming off the field. You bout got 3-4 pass catching TEs. Bobo is an experienced ST player and you know BA likes Scotty M. There is no place for Spencer, it even wasting a space on the PS. PS better have offensive linemen for development.

Schnell will clear waivers early this way… tactical move

  17. AlteredEgo Say: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

    Santos is still here?

  18. firethecannons Says:

rather see us cut the ones that did not produce like watson and scotty miller

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Watson & Wilson are both good ST players and above Schnell & Miller…..we may have to tuck Miller away on the PS in order to keep players like Devante Bond….

The mark of a good team is letting good players go because you have no room.

I agree that Schnell is likely to be picked up somewhere…..hope he does well, he’s a gamer…..

  20. Rayjay1122 Says:

Boozer not on the list? Wow…SMH

  21. mark2001 Says:

Schnell might be on the practice squad…but Arians said something critical…that he likes physical WR’s that have the size and strength to block downfield…and that Schnell wasn’t gifted in stature and frame. When he said that, I figured the odds were greatly against him.

  22. mark2001 Says:

Just FYI fans…remember..this isn’t the end. We still have claims off waivers and related cuts. We have the 5th highest claim order. So if you think we might have someone else to cut, particularly on the O line, you might be right.

Boozer not on the list? Wow…SMH

We aren’t nearly finished with cuts……that list is 22…..by my math that’s 90 down to 68…..we have 15 more to get to 53…..

  24. jjbucfan Says:

I think they are trying to hide some of these guys for PS by cutting them now.
    A. Johnson showed some promise, E. Smith was all over the field last night, D Harris had 2 opportunities at Ints, that tells me he put himself in good positions, Schnell looked plenty physical when he broke like 5 tackles and headed down the sideline and Huegenin played pretty decent. Would like to see the first 4 at least should get stashed if they clear waivers.

  25. Christopher Schiefen Says:

Schnell was a terrible athlete, just because he did ok against other mediocre athletes means nothing.

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

This is only 22 of 36-37 cuts to be made. More will be released.

  27. Hodad Says:

Schnell would actually suck in a real NFL game, but he’s still better then boy band want to be, Scotty the fair catch Miller.

  28. Bucsfan1988 Says:

    Christopher Schiefen, that’s a weak-a$$ comment bro!
    Schnell ran 4.5 forty-time with 3 cone at 6.71!! That’s ELITE quickness!!

He had almost identical 40 to Hump!
Hump only ran 6.79 3 cone!!

Sooooo, that means he’s actually quicker than Hump!!

And did you see how slippery he was with the YAC he got after that one catch last nite? I’m telling you this dude is Hump 2.0!!

    Perfect slot guy!!

  29. Bob in Valrico Says:

I liked Schnellas a receiver, but on ST as a returner he called unnecessary fair catches with plenty of room to maneuver and make a return. When he did a QB slide this week on a return I was scratching my head. He just give me the vibe that wanted to play on special teams especially as a returner.

  30. Mike Johnson Says:

I get this feeling there might be 4 to 5 more cuts comin after the Bucs scour the waiver wires.

  31. Bucsfan1988 Says:

Schnell can catch anything thrown his way…he would be a fine punt returner as well if given more chances…

    just my 2 cents 😉

  32. Bob in Valrico Says:

Damn, I thought that was Schnell calling those ridiculous fair catches. Both Schnell and Miller would probably struggle on special teams where the 5 th or 6 th receiver will need to play.

  33. Lamarcus Says:

    Schnell wasn’t good enough

I’m surprised Bruce Anderson is still here

  34. webster Says:

You guys dont understand. Its a business. The bucs purposely didnt play schnell a lot after the 1st preseason game. They want to bring him back on the practice squad. They could not do that if they allowed him to continue to put good film out there for other teams to see. The bucs are rolling the dice that other teams wont snatch him up off waivers. To be continued

  35. JimmyJack Says:

Was hoping Harris would make it. Pretty sure he’s the same Harris we picked up midseason last year & he was a very solid depth player. Tough part was we got a lot of young talent at CB so was kinda a uphill battle for him.

  36. DooshLaRue Says:

Santos is still here because we’re shopping him hard and hopefully we get something good in return.

  37. Jim Says:

Neither a supporter nor critic of Miller, but would like to point out that we have no idea what, if anything, the coaches told him on the returns…

  38. adam from ny Says:

right now licht and bruce are playing checkers and swiging brewskis, as players line up outside the office like it’s a sell out “creature feature” double feature sunday afternoon movie…

camp meat fodder goes in to walk the plank…

it’s a brutal gig for a hot minute at one buc…but someone’s gotta do it…

bruce’s final words for each player is the same…

“leave your jockstrap by the door on your way out son”

  39. tmaxcon Says:

until the glazers make that cut down list there will be no hope in the bay… basement titles and embarrassing football is the glazer way

  40. Delaware Bucs Fan Says:

we all know Schnell is going to NE and will kill it. Guy is a gamer but fell into a WR rich team.

  41. Rayjay1122 Says:

Hopefully the staff at the stadium clean the disease known as USF so it doesn’t rub off on the Bucs. What a lousy football team. Lol. Never was a fan of Charlie Strong. He is to thw Bulls what Lovie Smith was to the Bucs. Totally inept.

  42. DB55 Says:

it’s a sell out “creature feature” double feature sunday afternoon movie…

    Line of the year

  43. mark2001 Says:

As a Wisconsin alumni parent, I’m not shocked regarding the game tonight. The Wisconsin O line and Running backs are too big and strong for USF. On he other hand, he Wisconsin D is vulnerable to a team with good WR’s but USF”s have dropped too many passes. USF may have some speed advantages, but you need some running lanes and you have to make catches to take advantage of it.

And the heat thing is overstated…it has been warm in Madison this summer, so the Temp difference isn’t as big as you might thing…especially when playing in the rain.

  44. Rayjay1122 Says:

Yes The Badgers are much more talented than USF. USF hasn’t been relevant since Matt Grothe was their QB and they upset Auburn in Sunburn. Those were the good ole days.

  45. Get a clue Says:

Rather have a guy that drops two picks than a guy that’s never in position to make a play. Harris and Schnell are better than guys on the roster

  46. Rayjay1122 Says:

I think Schnell was better than Miller. I mean at least Schell showed something. All Miller showed is that he can call a fair catch when nobody is 25 yards from him. Another wasted draft pick. Pffft

  47. JimmyJack Says:

Schnell may of had a chance if we didn’t have Bobo Wilson on the team. He is our #4 wide out in mine opinion.

The comments above are classic kneejerk reactions. Calling a guy a waste after one preseason game? This type of reaction has been proven dumb in every year of the history of the NFL.

  48. Bob in Valrico Says:

Robet Heron ,Kenny Bell were drafted when we were not as loaded at wide receiver. Now there is a lot more competition for the fifth and sixth WR spots. Not sure what the team is thinking on Watson, but he is good on special teams. Also think Bobo Wilson can help the team on returns and as a receiver.

  49. mark2001 Says:

If Schnell had been three inches taller and thirty pounds of muscle heavier, he likely would have made the cut. But he isn’t.

  50. Defense Rules Says:

Not much sense in fans commenting on JBF articles Joe if you’re just going to send them to Moderation then never show what they wrote. Comments just disappearing seems to be happening more and more often lately it seems.

  51. BucEmUp Says:

    Hopefully nobody will.claim.schnell

  52. Byrd Says:

    Let’s sign rb McCoy ASAP!!

  53. WyomingDude Says:

Thank goodness they also canned Emmanuel Hall just now.

My suspicion is that come 4:01pm today, they will have unnecessarily prioritized keeping too many at one position, and not enough at another. Versus making trades and moves. It better not be to keep that couch potato Ellington.

And sloppy Light will have missed out on McCoy also. If we go into this season with Barber and ROJO, holy h3ll man. Do something you imbecile (Licht).

  54. TOM Says:

    Schnell-Miller=PS

  55. Brandon Says:

Why are people so surprised Schnell got cut? He barely made an appearance in the 3rd preseason game and played in only the 2nd half of game 4. Sure, maybe he makes the PS… but it was clear last week that he wasn’t making the team.
