Mason Foster & A Bucs Return

July 23rd, 2019

Yes, former Bucs linebacker and Redskins captain Mason Foster found himself on the street today after Washington made him an early and surprise salary cap casualty.

He ranked seventh in the NFL in combined tackles (solo tackles + assists) last season with 131; that was 11 more than Lavonte David.

At 30 years old with a house in Tampa, experience in a 3-4 defense and a close friendship with David, Foster is worth a second thought from Bucs fans and management. Foster even told manbeast JoeBucsFan.com intern Zach Seifter this month how much he loves training in the Tampa swelter, which is why he’s kept a house here.

For Tampa Bay, Foster would represent a quality depth piece, and you better believe Joe would prefer Foster on the roster for $2 million versus having Ryan Smith earning the same cash. It’s doubtful Foster would play much special teams, so that’s a consideration. But again, he’d be great depth and a strong additional sounding board for rookie savior linebacker Devin White.

Yesterday’s initial Bucs pre-camp roster moves placed second-year linebacker Jack Cichy on the physically unable to perform list. So another linebacker could be a need.

Joe doubts Foster would like how he fits into the Bucs roster, so Joe suspects Foster wouldn’t want to play here. But he’s still worth serious consideration by the suits at One Buc Palace.

  1. Barbosa Says:

Go sign him Bucs. Once Foster realizes he needs the paycheck he will sign. Also, it’s a new staff with new players he would have a chance to compete.

  2. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Yes! Love me some Mason Foster. And he’s gotten better since leaving Tampa. Great locker room guy. I’d love to see him back in a Bucs uni.

  3. SOEbuc Says:

Keeping homes and training in Tampa is always a good sign a player may return to the area.

  4. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

    Quality LB, sign him.

Oops! I forgot for a second that Gump is in charge still.

  5. Race to 10 Says:

If you ain’t replacing a rookie or a below average starter the money ain’t worth it especially if you’re trying to save it for a pass rusher who may meet the same fate within the next couple months. Lol what is this fascination with quality depth when this site doesn’t even like most of the starters

  6. Jean Lafitte Says:

Sad thing is he may have a home here but he would still be on the road for a month and a half straight anyway. Might as well go to a team willing to give him a starting gig than wasting away as a backup at 30.

  7. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

We forget Licht is the GM here

Positions of needs are rarely addressed

  8. Pryda...sec147 Says:

    Nope pass!

  9. tmaxcon Says:

He escaped the black hole once he would not make the mistake of coming back

  10. R.O. Says:

Ryan Smith is not earning $2.0M this year. He is suspended 4 games. He is exempt. Why would you cut him in TC? Doesnt make sense..

  11. Rod Munch Says:

At LB you have David, White and Barrett. White is the only ILB amongst those 3… or so I thought. I went and looked at the Bucs roster on their website just to see who I was forgetting and they have David listed as an ILB? What the hell? They finally have a chance to use him as an edge rusher, to wreak havoc all over the place, and they’re going to move him inside? I hope that’s just the slobs running the Bucs website screwing up.

  12. Bird Says:

Sounds like a no brainer to me.

However , I think it’s about playing time for him. I’m Sure he still wants to play. He would be behind LVD and white so not sure his snaps would be to his liking

An edges rusher he is not.
He could be a starter somewhere with his numbers

  13. Dlavid Says:

He ain’t coming to Tampa !

  14. wausa Says:

I don’t think he fits into what the Bucs are wanting to do on defense.

  15. 813bucboi Says:

    hold steady for DUKE!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  16. Anonymous Says:

If there is any money left…..we have MUC better needs than a LBN, we need OL!!!!!!

  17. zzbuc Says:

If there is any money left, we have much needs on the OL than on the LB position…….But with this GM you never know, maybe he uses for another kicker!!!!

  18. Defense Rules Says:

Jack Cichy was never really in the mix Joe (can’t stay healthy). That leaves us with LVD, White, Bucannon, Minter, Bond plus a couple others to draw from. Doubt we’ll keep more than 5 from that group … with LVD, White & Bucannon being shoo-ins. Minter makes $735K & Bond makes $645K. Mason Foster was slated to make $4.25 mil this year, with $250K as a dead Cap value. Interestingly though, he only made $1.75 mil last year … still more than Minter & Bond combined. From a strictly money standpoint, I doubt the Bucs will be interested in a 30-year-old ILB at that price. Especially one who was never very fast to begin with.

BTW, that same Spotrac salary Cap table shows CB Rodgers-Cromartie making $1 mil & SS Landon Collins making $3.8 mil. Weren’t they both available as FAs earlier this year? Wonder if the Bucs sniffed either one.

  19. Beligerentbuc Says:

Bill Bellicheck or Pete Carroll will pick him up…very coachable individual and a captain with a high footy iq.

  20. Buc4evr Says:

As a backup at a much lower salary I’m ok with him, but he is not starter material and is not worth $2 million. I’d rather sign a veteran safety or DB.

  21. tmaxcon Says:

i’d rather have foster than lvd… foster has never stated that he gives up after big plays and bad calls like cancer93’s main sidekick lvd has. fosters has out played lvd the last few years without question but low standard bucfan lives in another dimension with unicorns and butterflies when it comes to their favorite backups…

  22. Jackpc1 Says:

Sign a veteran RG/RT for the few pennies we have left.

  23. BucEmUp Says:

I would love for him to be back but someone else will grab him

  24. Mike Johnson Says:

We don’t need another LB. We need to find a very good DE.

  25. Cobraboy Says:

No. He wasn’t all that when he was a Buc before.

  26. common sense Says:

Lets resign a player we let walk away that did not produce much on another team. Oh also he is 6 years older and slower.

  27. Buccaneerscotty Says:

Lean the 3-4 defense before blabbing….

  28. Stanglassman Says:

Rod- David is too small to play OLB in a 3-4 defense. Think of the OLBs as DEs. In this defense he will get plenty of opportunities to blitz and reek havoc.

  29. Rod Munch Says:

Stanglassman …You play your smaller LBs play OUTSIDE in a 3-4. Yes, you can have a hybrid d-lineman pure edge rusher on one side depending on the type of 3-4 you run, but generally speaking you have your big guys up the middle to stop the run and your smaller faster guys outside that can rush or drop into coverage – which is exactly what David excels out – doing both.

  30. #1bucsfan Says:

T M A X I P A D go back to your hole nothing you say makes sense. I can’t believe you believe in unicorns an butterflies

  31. Howard Cosell Says:

    If Foster has…
    1) Lost a step and getting older
    2) Has a poor attitude
    3) Is just treading water in the league
    4) Out for one last payday while doing as little as possible
    5) and most importantly: Will work cheap

Then he sounds like a buccaneer man!!!
    Sign him asap!!!

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

It’s worth some discussion at the very least. As I recall, a bunch of people here wanted him gone because they felt he was too slow.

    Were they wrong or right?

If he can play outside, he might get to start. Let him replace Will Golston and we can save some money.

  33. DB55 Says:

Time for another DB55 repost !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Btw Mason Foster was #7 in tackles last year. Weird bc I thought according to the TB Bucs fan Foster wasn’t any good.

No, that was according to nitwit Lovie. 🙁

    BAAAHAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. lowercaseg Says:

Sign him. He has my respect ever since this play, https://youtu.be/muE4YxBCJv0

  35. Delaware Bucs Fan Says:

simplified…..would you rather have chicy&ryan smith or mason foster………???

  36. KingBuc17 Says:

Sh1t Chicy can’t get or stay on the field and Ryan Smith doesn’t play LB. Passing downs its only Lavonte and White in at LB anyway. I would love to see Lavonte or White fill in for JPP on the outside (LT-like )

Mason and white in middle on 1st and 2nd down. Plus stoked to see newcomer Barrett, and Buccannon
Plus we re going to play some 4-3 throw mason in middle and white/david on outside. Foster Adds versatility…. which is what Bowles is all about
