“Jameis Has The Advantage”

July 9th, 2019

Talkin’ America.

Joe has a sense most national NFL analysts have a whole different opinion of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, than many Bucs fans.

Joe has been listening and reading and watching a lot of national NFL folks of late and while many are not overly in love with Jameis and his position with the Bucs, they don’t believe he is in as grave of danger of being exiled from his current squad as Marcus Mariota is with Tennessee.

Recently, former NFL quarterback and current CBS/FOX/SiriusXM NFL Radio personality Brady Quinn offered his five quarterbacks on the hot seat. He did not include Jameis but he did name Mariota.

The crowd at “Good Morning Football,” seen weekday mornings on NFL Network, seems to be on the same page. Former Lions wide receiver Nate Burleson suggested Bucco Bruce Arians will save Jameis.

“Jameis has the advantage,” Burleson said when Kay Adams asked who has a better shot at returning to their current teams in 2020, Jameis or Mariota. Burleson added how wide receiver Mike Evans is an underrated star, and he also liked how quickly Arians had Jameis’ back when he was hired but you don’t hear the same type of enthusiastic support coming out of Nashville for Mariota.

Closet Bucs fan Peter Schrager, the Good Morning Football co-host, is of the mind the braintrust of the Bucs is “all-in on Jameis.” If the Bucs were not, Schrager explained, no team would have tolerated all of Jameis’ shenanigans.

The full discussion of Jameis and Mariota’s job security can be seen in the video below beginning at the 1:35 mark.

All opinions are good to see…I wouldn’t put anymore into this one than I would the others, whether they say he goes, or stays. I’ll add, saying Winston is “safer than Mariota” also shouldn’t provide anyone solitude. Completely unrelated. The statement that well, they’ve put up with Winston for four years, so he must be their guy completely misses the point. Winston is on his last year with no new contract.

  2. JA Says:

Let’s face it. With the exception of Russel Wilson, the time of the running NFL quarterback has come and gone. MM is horrible from the pocket and Cam Newton is not far behind. I guess one could say that a running QB is still a weapon, but what good is it if they get beat up and miss games? Curious to see what will happen in Arizona with Kyler Murray.
Back to MM–hard to believe Tennessee made the playoffs two years ago when he threw 13 TD’s and 15 picks. Goes to show what a good defense can do for a franchise. Makes one wonder what MM’s stats would have been here with a horrible defense. Would the Jameis haters hate him as much as they currently loathe Jameis?
Let’s assume Jameis’s off field bonehead immaturities are behind him. If that were a given, which of the two would you prefer as the Bucs QB? For me, the question is almost rhetorical–Jameis.
A call to all those that wanted MM with the first pick: “Come out-come out wherever you are …”

  3. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

This line says it all….”no team would have tolerated all of Jameis’ shenanigans.” But the Bucs? Ohhhh, we do. Idiot front office.

  4. Bucsfanman Says:

JA- I’m happy to oblige. I wanted Mariota. We finished that season with the inane ability to not be able to block….at all. All things being equal, I felt that Mariota would be able to avoid the pressure a bit more.
To be sure, NEITHER QB has really proved much of anything. Which would I pick if I had to do it over? I THINK Jameis was the right pick, Jameis it is.
Truthfully though, both have a lot to prove IMO. At least we know Jameis can throw.

  5. Bucsfanman Says:

For the record, I was never a “hater”. I’m a Bucs fan and it’s a team game. It’s not a popularity contest! Get me someone who wins games.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I also wanted Mariota……only because I questioned Jameis’ off-field behavior going forward…..not because of football skills.
But, like a good fan….I became a Jameis fan when we drafted him and I’m glad we made the pick.
Jameis proved me right with his Uber “hassle”….but we have gotten over it.
Unfortunately, it has cost Jameis far more than it has the Bucs….he has lost any opportunity to gain major endorsement deals and has permanently tarnished an already questionable character.
I wish him the very best going forward…….fix the running game….fix the defense….improve the special teams and Jameis with the help of BA will hopefully be the QB we all thought he would be.

  7. JA Says:

    Bucsfanman–

Wholeheartedly agree. We all want someone that can win games.
The QB position on any team rules the roost, but defense is usually the key. With a great defense, almost any serviceable QB can win games. Trent Dilfer comes to mind with the Ravens. The thought of him winning a Super Bowl is mind boggling.

  8. Buc4evr Says:

I always wanted Jameis over MM, but his off the field issues and lack of decision making skills have been a setback. His development has also been hindered by a team with little talent and I think everyone knows what the issues are. If Bruce can fix those issues, Jameis has a chance to be a top ten QB. MM on the other hand has had injury issues and even with a much better team will never be a top tier QB.

  9. The Buc Realist Says:

Its funny to hear the same question over and over again, “Who do want, jw3. or this other real bad QB”????????????

The answer is neither!!!!! The answer is that the Bucs need to find a “real” QB!!!!!!!!!

The sheep and local media lobbied to keep a bad GM, just because he would hire a coach to “fix” jw3 and not evaluate the whole situation and team!!!!!!!! When all the move revolve around those that will give a pass to the QB will equate to failure!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Bird Says:

Let’s face it ..Neither has lived up to the hype for #1 and #2 pick so far.
However , both are young players.
And quarterbacks are now playing into their 40’s

Jameis is in the 16 – 24 range but closer to the teens.
Mariota is in the 16-24 range but closer to 20’s

No question Jameis has more talent then Mariota ; but neither has separated themselves from the other yet
And for those claimoring that Mariota had a run game and defense , name 3 receivers or tightends Mariota has since being in league.

  12. RODNEY ALLEN Says:

Wow this is how comments r suppose to be civil no bashing just fact based opinions. I love it. Go bucs

  13. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Here come the excuses for why he’s 6-16…

  14. RustyRhinos Says:

As the words that were posted here when we drafted Winston.
“Wait for it” and in year five we are still waiting. “Wins a Ton” is a ton of games 21 wins?
As my daddy said it’s time to sh!t or get off the pot because there are others waiting.

I do hope that our new coaches and new game plans help to push Winston to great heights this season. Not sure if the no risk it no biscuit is the best plan moving forward for Winston. I do hope he helps to bring another winning season here this season. I am still waiting for it.
Show me don’t tell me! Show me!

    Go Bucs!

  15. Oneilbucs Says:

Why don’t they never talk about the bucs defense or how bad the running game is??? It is a real war on Jamies with the national media. They talked about the Falcons defense and running game they talked about the saints defense and the running game how good they are . And they talked about the Panthers defense and running back. But with the bucs it’s all about Jamies. It doesn’t matter how bad his running backs are or how bad his defense is. They are setting it up for this year . Every game the bucs lose will be Jamies fault regardless how well he plays. This sounds like a real set up to push him out the NFL.

  16. WestChap Says:

Most civil discussion of Jameis in years… I preferred Marcus pre-draft but time has shown both to be OK not great. Critics of both have been vindicated by each providing “proof” of pre-draft concerns. If you had to choose one for the coming year it has to be Jameis… warts and all, he has the most arm talent and the better opportunity with team/coach. Bucs are definitely all-in for this year and likely will franchise next year… anything beyond that is wholly in Jameis head (not hands) as good decisions on and off the field will turn him into the first Buc QB to get a 2nd contract and a perennial star. Win well and all struggles will be forgotten. Lose badly and everyone will lose their heads.

  17. mike Says:

disheartning that this is the conversation of the #1 overall pick after 4 years. Its a buc life.

  18. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

So the defense makes him turn it over 76 times in 56 games?

How did the RB’s make him turn it over 76 times?

Did the kicking game make him consistently over throw Djax?

Did the awful secondary make him fumble the ball so much?

Does Dirk Koetter make him force the ball to covered receivers and ignore wide open underneath targets?

Does the awful defense, poor running and poor special teams hurt the win loss record? YES!!!

But so does gifting opponents free points and free field position by turning the ball over 76 times

No more excuses, time for Jameis to play like a #1 overall pick and not get outplayed by a journeyman backup

  19. Ra'Shad Says:

6-16 Sheesh…. I know all of it isn’t his fault, but damn that 6-16 sounds bad.

  20. TexBuc Says:

    In Bruce I trust.

  21. Tye Says:

    That’s simple to explain…
Titans are a much smarter and better ran organization.. They will be WAY ahead of the Bucs for it.. Most people can look at history and see the Bucs are WELL known for keeping low hanging fruit and letting the quality fruit go… So it is easy to foresee where they coming from…

Winston, Mariota, Bortles, Tannehill, all are closely similar, they look like they could be great only in certain situations at certain times but over all, you really don’t want them are your starting qb!

  22. Cgmaster27 Says:

@bird in Jameis first year he was throwing to the likes of an aging Vincent jackson, mike Evan’s and such stars as Freddie martino and whomever else they straggled up. And yes Jameis has better recievers now, but mariota has a vastly better running game and defense. As for TE, dont pretend tennessee doesnt have delanie Walker, who is a damm good TE. And the titans have drafted multiple recievers since Mariota has been there. I’d gladly take mariotas situation and so would Jameis I’m sure.

  23. Cgmaster27 Says:

@loyal yeah actually the defense DOES have some manner of fault for his picks. When you’re down by 30 at half, you have to take chances. And if we had an AVERAGE run game ,he wouldnt be throwing it 55 times a game. Not saying Jameis isnt at fault for his turnovers, he is, but to say a lack of defense and running game has nothing to do with it, makes your comment as dumb as they usually are.

Only two quarterbacks have played for the Bucs over the last two years.
To my knowledge they have BOTH had:
    the SAME coaches,
    the SAME RBs,
    the SAME receivers,
    the SAME kickers,
    the SAME defenses,
    the SAME offensive line,
etc., etc., (uniforms, locker rooms, game-day meals or other excuses).
Ryan Fitzpatrick started 10 games and went 4 – 6.
Jameis Winston started 22 games, and went 6 – 16.
Now, I will admit that the opponents were different, but if you look at the records of the teams each one beat, you will again see that Fitz and the Bucs actually beat a few good teams, whereas Jameis’ best games came against inferior competition.
Now again, to be as clear as I can, I am not saying that Fitzpatrick is better than Winston, but I am saying that America’s QB, ProBowler, #1 First Overall Pick in the NFL draft SHOULD be better (in his 3rd and 4th seasons in the NFL) than the journeyman, Ryan Fitzpatrick.

    tickrdr

BTW: (ducks his head and runs for cover) MG8 has had 22 starts during his NFL career…………………… and has a record of 6 – 16???

  25. 813bucboi Says:

    realist

BA was hired to “fix” the team that dirk ran into the ground….

now that we finally have a “real” coach, we’ll get to see “real” coaching and “real” football….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  26. Magadude Says:

And to think just two years ago people that hail BA as the second coming were also praising Dirk Koetter/Mike Smith as the guys who are going to going to save Winston and the Bucs from Lovie, who ran the team into the ground.

And two years before that, Lovie was going use his superior coaching skills, SB resume, and nostalgia with a great Bucs defense to save the Bucs from Greg Schiano running them into the ground….

    And….

The only “real” coaches have real records. What will BA be in two years?

  27. Stanglassman Says:

The only question is if we chose MM how many times would Jameis led that Titian’s team to the playoffs. All fours years? Maybe just three?

  28. Jean Lafitte Says:

Insert MM into TB’s offense, with this surrounding cast, and watch MM play better. I shudder to think how JW would do in the Titans no talent receiverless offense.

    With the truth bomb

To be clear I wanted Jameis over Mariota, badly. I’m not a fan of spread option qbs coming in and playing under center and reading defenses. But after 56 games it’s hard to be confident Jameis is the guy.

Let’s be real he was outplayed by a journeyman backup

Time for Jameis to play like a #1 pick and win some damn games

  30. Oneilbucs Says:

You can put any body on this team as a quarterback and we will still lose.

  31. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

    Oneilbucs

A lot of other qbs are winning more than 6 games though

  32. Oneilbucs Says:

Loyalty I think yall really don’t know nothing about football. This franchise has done a bad job on building this team. Has Jamies ever had a good running game no has Jamies ever had a good or decent defense no that’s what all teams need to win . I’m more about team not quarterback. I just believe that with the right running game and a decent defense Jamies will help the team win a lot of games. Mariota is surrounded with a running game and defense something Jamies has never had since his rookie year and our defense was ranked 32 . Give Jamies what Mariota has and this is a championship team.

  33. Chris Says:

    Hey joe,

Shrager basically said it in laughing stock. He also said when healthy mariota has had more success on and off the field than jameis.

He basically stated even with being unsuccessful inaccurate and off the field issues, Bucs are still all in on Winston lol. What’s that say about ownership ?

  34. Reach87 Says:

The TEAM was 6-16 or whatever the number is. NFL football is the ultimate team game. 3 phases, tons of coaches, 53-63 players during any given week. This is not golf or tennis. Improve the team performance and you win games consistently. If winning consistently is what you care about. Go Bucs!

  35. Dapostman Says:

    @Loyal,

How many games did Aaron Rodgers win the last two years and his defense is better than Tampa’s?

  36. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

    Oneilbucs

Other qbs who don’t turn it over who have bad running games and defenses win more than 3 games a year. No one is asking Jameis to go 11-5 or 10-6 with an awful run game and defense

But to win 3 games a year is pathetic

Other qbs win 6,7 and sometimes 8 games without great defenses and running attacks. Look around the league it happens all the time with good qbs who weren’t #1 overall picks who were hyped as pro ready franchise qbs

  37. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

THANKS!!! Made me laugh out loud!!! “Give Jamies what Mariota has and this is a championship team.”

  38. Oneilbucs Says:

Magdu can you prove he can’t??? No you just hate Jamies . I think a lot of yall really just want a white quarterback. And go ahead and say race card that still don’t change the fact. Why do Wentz need a running game to win and Jamies shouldn’t need a running game and a decent defense? Why did Andrew Luck needed a running game to help him and a defense but Jamies shouldn’t ? Why do white quarterbacks and all those things and Jamies shouldn’t need a running game or defense to win ???? Lol lol answer the question please. But I know yall haters not going to.
