“It Was Pitiful”

July 2nd, 2019

Former Bucs guard looks at 2019.

Since the Bucs hired Bucco Bruce Arians and the team willfully ignored a couple of critical areas that needed manpower upgrades, Joe has written many times we will find out fairly quickly if Bucs coaches the past few years were really that bad or if terrible assessments of personnel were made.

Another person on board with this philosophy is former Bucs guard Ian Beckles. In a recent edition of his podcast “In the Trenches,” Beckles pointed to — surprise! — the trenches and what to expect this season.

“I hope we have improved in the trenches,” Beckles said. “Listen, the manpower and the personnel is going to be right about the same. There is not going to be a lot of changes. So it is going to be about coaching. It’s going to be about schemes. It’s going to be about our defense stopping some damn body when it matters.

“Our defense didn’t stop a swinging dilly last year when it mattered. Not one time in any game. Not once. It was pitiful.”

The defense was so pitiful and pitifully coached, Joe just wants to fire empty beer bottles at traffic on U.S. 19; it p!sses Joe off so. There is no doubt coaches at Pinellas Park High School (Hi Kenny!) could have done a better job with the Bucs defense than the unadulterated trash we witnessed the past few years.

But Beckles is right on the money when it comes to the personnel in the trenches. One might argue without Jason Pierre-Paul the defensive line could be worse (yes, Joe knows all about Ndamukong Suh being signed). The offensive line is about even with last year (who knows if the Earl of Watford is an upgrade over Caleb Benenoch?).

So if the Bucs improve in the trenches, that’s proof the previous coaching was flat garbage.

If the Bucs don’t improve in the trenches or actually take a step back, well, you know.

I’m pretty sure Arians is not putting his reputation on line coming to a “not good” talented team. In Bruce I Trust. He sees something with this team that is good

  2. Paul Says:

I personally don’t care what Ian Beckles has to say about anything. Why do you keep promoting this clown? He needs to get real work.

  3. Dirks Great Granpappy Says:

To be fair, I don’t think many people would or could stop a swinging dilly

  4. BA FAN Says:

It was Bad Coaching that resulted in lots of injuries and bad schemes and no accountability; zero adjustments at half time, bad time management, admission from the HC he had no clue how to fix it, players in wrong positions, pansy practices, ad nauseum! BA will fix it this year!

  5. DB55 Says:

I thought they stopped people just fine when twinkle toes was on the bench but wtfdik

  6. SCBucsFan Says:

Ian Beckles bashing the Bucs… odds of that?

  7. ATLBucs Says:

Joe we already know the state of last years coaching. First, before Mike Smith was fired it was horrible. After Mike Smith was fired it improved to terrible.

  8. The Buc Realist Says:

So many forgot how many injuries on the defense and D-line occurred last year, that to say that the d-line is worse because jpp is hurt is a fabrication at best!!!!!!!!! Gholdston was a starting DT in the first quarter of the year!!!!!!!!!!!

The coaches have better succeed and produce, because they had every opportunity to get what they wanted and needed!!!!!!! and They can go back to where they came from after one year if they do not!!!!!!! And that is UNEMPLOYED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! where is all the “hold them accountable now”????????????? 2019 is a wasted year!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Joe … “The defense was so pitiful and pitifully coached, Joe just wants to fire empty beer bottles at traffic on U.S. 19; it p!sses Joe off so.”

Note to self: Stay off of US 19.

  11. Mr. Lucky Says:

OMG – I actually had to look up what a swinging dilly was (yup, just what you think).

    Ian needs better analogies….

  12. Wesley Says:

Stop giving us Ian’s opinion, no one cares what he thinks.

  13. Wesley Says:

I’d be more interested in what Karl “the truth” Williams thinks. Ian is a buffoon.

  14. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Beckles will stop bashing the Bucs when the Bucs stop having so much to bash. Is he wrong? And I also agree with a poster that the Bucs did look more stout without GMC in the game. Memories of a quick step to nowhere and a gapping whole.

  15. JimmyJack Says:

You guys that don’t listen to Ian Beckles are missing out. He will go off the cuff and talk about things that all the other media’s would never say. I’m pretty sure it’s because he does have to worry about getting quotes from players and coaches so he don’t have to kiss any butt.

I don’t know what he says on the radio because I will not listen to that classless, dirtbag, entertainer wannabe he is teamed with. But Ian’s podcast is top notch…..In a lot of ways Ian reminds me of the Big Dog and I hope for him to follow in his footsteps. Get him his own show 620…….Just put him on instead of those 2 teenager sounding laughing fools who makee wanna jam a pen in my ears……Good greif our sports radio is awful

  16. Joe Says:

Note to self: Stay off of US 19.

Avoid if possible. Just went from Dunedin to Hernando County. Ug-uh-ly traffic.

  17. Joe Says:

After Mike Smith was fired it improved to terrible.

    🙂

  18. Jim Says:

I like Ian. And he doesn’t have to “get a job” because he’s already made a fortune actually playing in the NFL. That’s right, he knows stuff…

  19. Mike Johnson Says:

Beckles..Knows stuff? The only stuff he knows is the stuff..he smokes….I really do not..like the guy at all.

  20. Todd Says:

    Defense Rules—

“Note to self: Stay off of US 19.” 🤣

Todd says, “I hope Joe DOES toss his beers (no, not like a drunken sorority girl) and gets thrown in the county jail for 30-days…so the world can recover from the art of negative histrionics.”

    Just 30-days.

@Realist … “2019 is a wasted year!!!!!!!!!!! 2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

THAT’S your answer that’s about to be revealed? That 2019 will be a wasted year? Regardless of whether Bucs have a winning season or a losing season, it won’t be wasted. Last year was a wasted season. After about Game 4 against Chicago, Dirk was a ‘dead man walking’. Despite the 2 wins against San Fran & Carolina, it became obvious that he had no answers to what was happening to the Bucs. It was also pretty obvious that he’d be replaced at the end of the season, and that we had a major rebuilding to do. The only real questions were … ‘Replaced by who?’ and ‘How fast could we rebuild?’

Folks can call this year whatever they want, but we’re rebuilding. Last year’s team was a mess. Wait, make that A MESS!!!!!!!. I’m amazed that BA & company has been able to accomplish as much as they have in such a short time, given the horrific salary Cap situation we started the year with. IF we break even, or do better than that, this year be looked on as a major success. IF we end up with a losing record, but our defense & S/Ts play better, we’ll have set a decent foundation for the road ahead. Regardless of how the offense plays, we’ll get some much-needed answers in the process (as in clarification on how to move forward regarding QB, RB & OLine positions?).

If nothing else, 2019 promises to be an interesting year. Still too early to set any real expectations, but there’s a LOT of potential in here as a result of the changes that’ve been made already. And I’m convinced that there are more changes coming before we hit Game 1. It’ll take awhile apparently, but folks need to stop looking backwards and start looking forward.

BA looks like hes on vacation to me.

  23. Buccfan37 Says:

The poll revealed that Buc fans are expecting a decent season. Never know that reading the comments. A love-despair relationship.
