Bonding

July 26th, 2019

“Quality time.”

It’s not uncommon to see Bucs players working out at local high school fields to keep sharp, especially when One Buc Palace is closed during the summer.

And it is not rare to see America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, at these workouts.

So Joe was a little surprised this month to see Jameis take teammates Justin Watson and Scotty Miller to Tallahassee for workouts and film study on the campus of Florida State University.

(Jameis informed Joe that tight end Antony Auclair joined them as well. That was the first Joe had heard that.)

Yes, Joe knows Jameis has roots in Tallahassee. But yesterday when Jameis spoke to the local pen and mic club at One Buc Palace, Joe asked Jameis why drive four hours when he could have done the same in the Tampa Bay area and film work at someone’s house.

Jameis said it was a way to bond with his teammates.

“I think one thing is just going back to my school and working out in their facilities and spending some time with their coaches,” Jameis said of the field trip. “Another thing is just taking the players out of this atmosphere, going down to Tallahassee, stepping away from Tampa and just spending some quality time together.”

Now that is pretty cool.

It isn’t the first time Jameis has done this with wide receivers. He tried to bond with malcontent DeSean Jackson in Tallahasee, but it seemed like Jackson just wanted to go for fun as he admitted he grew up a Seminoles fan.

And Jameis has been with Mike Evans and others to Evans’ old stomping grounds of Texas A&M, which is now coached by Jameis’ old FSU coach, Jimbo Fisher.

Back to the roots and basics, love it! This will be a record year for JAMEIS!

Is Joe new to Tampa? Jameis goes to Tallahasse every offseason. He also goes to Texas A&M because of mike evans and Jimbo is also there. He is not the first qb/player to work out at colleges outside of his professional city. That was a weird question even for the Joes. Almost jenna laine-ish

Joe mentioned in the story Jameis making a trip to Tallahassee previously.

Well if you “mentioned” jameis has done this previously then i’m even more confused as to why “joe was a little suprised this month to see jameis take teammates Justin Watson and Scotty Miller to Tallahassee for workouts and film study on the campus of Florida State University.” How can you know he has done this in the past yet be suprised? Again im confused.

Joe thought he explained this fairly clearly in the article. Guess not.

Why drive four hours to do something that can easily be done locally without wasting a sixth of a day driving? Seems like poor time management to Joe.

Might be different if Jameis had Evans, Godwin and Howard with him. He had three backups with him.

So Joe asked Jameis and he told Joe it was about bonding. Guess one cannot put a price tag on that.

Seems Jameis and the gang could have worked out, for example, at Clearwater Central Catholic or St. Pete Catholic or Calvary Christian, used a room in their athletic department for film study and/or gotten a place at TradeWinds on the cheap (TradeWinds works with the Bucs) in order to incorporate “bonding.”

But that’s just Joe counting nickels.

This is a really good thing to include the less experienced WRs….Watson & Miller…….the Jameis chemistry with them will be crucial to their success going forward.
And, I agree a road trip is better than around town time.

  8. Bob in Valrico Says:

    Agree TBBF,
Jameis is working withthe next guys up who have a chance to get snaps in place of Hump and DJax. I expect Watson will get a lot of them. How many Miller gets will depend on well Perriman does. He did not have a lot of targets in Cleveland. That a bit concerning to me.

  9. JimmyJack Says:

Not sure how much bonding was done but Jamies certainly developed a chemistry with Hump and Brate. Could argue Godwin too especially if he get those 100 catches Bruce predicted.

Sounds like Watson and Miller are the next two in line.

This is called making those around you better. It’s what leaders do. Couple that with a bit more maturity and this fanbase will be gushing about Winston!

    GO BUCS!!!!

How about “Bonding” on Sundays with Winning.

Seems like he answered all of Joe’s curiosity/wonder/questions in the quote above.

    – spending some time with their coaches
    – taking the players out of this atmosphere
    – stepping away from Tampa

Doesn’t sound like any of that could be done locally. Another non-story story.

    “that’s just Joe counting nickels”

Jameis Winston is making $21 Million dollars this year – he has no need for counting nickles.

So JW foots the bill for a road trip to T-Town – gaining valuable practice time and a bonding experience with a few guys he will be counting on to hang onto his passes this fall… and it costs him a couple or few thousand $.

To Jameis – that “expense” is literally like Joe taking $10 out of his pocket for an experience that is valuable to him and some of his co-workers.
