Good To Lose “Heart And Soul”

June 17th, 2019

Quibbles with national scribes.

Ian Beckles had words of caution for Bucs fans.

This is the time of year, Beckles said, that national NFL scribes try to weigh in on the Bucs. And it rankles the former Bucs guard and current popular local radio personality. Beckles, speaking on his podcast “In the Trenches,” even scoffed at his own radio station for calling guys from the Midwest to talk about the Bucs.

“You should be calling me,” Beckles said. “I watch every snap.”

Beckles added of national NFL reporters “don’t nobody watch the Buccaneers.”

And Beckles is bothered when national NFL reporters think the Bucs can make the playoffs.

“‘The Buccaneers are going to be the surprise team of the year.’ That’s just a reach,” Beckles said. “That’s all it is. You don’t know why. You are just saying it. Because there hasn’t been enough things happening in the offseason to happen here to make anybody think that this Buccaneer team is going to be a kickass team other than Bruce Arians.”

What really got Beckles worked up was reading an e-mail from a guy with the handle “Pizza Lover,” who read from Jonathan Jones of theMMQB.com that the Bucs lost the “heart and soul” of their defense when Gerald McCoy was released.

Beckles hit the ceiling.

“He was the heart and soul — of garbage!” Beckles yelped. “He is the heart and soul of what? If you are a leader of sh!t, then you have to get another leader. And that’s what we did.”

So to sum up Beckles’ angle, stick with the locals when you want Bucs analysis.

Joe will take Beckles’ words as an endorsement to continue to read Joe on a daily basis. And remember: lesser outlets snooze on Bucs news.

As always, Beckles welcomes feedback and encourages listeners to submit Bucs questions by e-mailing him at IanBeckles@RadioInfluence.com.

  1. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Bucs offense was #3 in the league. Defense was awful. Most fans believe if Arian can fix the defense than yes, it is not a stretch to think we can be a surprise team….a playoff team.

  2. BigHog Says:

I watched this team when Big Beckles played and he was an average player in my opinion…..you might want to stick to calling out players who played your position….maybe then you would come off as creditable!!

  3. Twon the buc Says:

I agree about national analyst not having a clue for the most part when critiquing my Bucs . However , what’s blows me even more is when locals seem to not have a clue as well lol …

  4. Buc4life Says:

I agree with Ian. McCoy needed to go because we need a new culture. Our defense need another defensive lineman and gel as a whole to become at least an average defense. We have gained speed (unproven) in our defensive backfield and hopefully our outside linebackers are ok. I’m looking forward to see the new identity with Suh and Vea manning the line while Devin and Levonte cause havoc.

  5. Twon the buc Says:

This new Bucs team hasn’t lost or won a game yet , so how’ can one determine this isn’t a playoff team .

  6. Buc believer Says:

@Big Hog…. so using YOUR measurement of credibility one must be a Super Star or a Pro Bowler at the position they are criticizing. How many Pro Bowls has Jenna Lane made? Or one of the Joes? Or Ira? That would be none and ALL of them are credible IMHO.

  7. Todd Says:

I dismiss at least half of what Beckles says. It’s no stretch that the Bucs will be a surprise team this year. So I’ll throw that opinion out with the bath water. GMC was NOT the heart of the defense. There was no heart. So I’ll keep that Beckles opinion. So there you go…Beckles comes in at the predictable 50/50.

  8. Joe Says:

    Buc believer:

    Thank you.

Joe has *never* been a believer that only a Hall of Fame player can speak intelligently about football. Vince Lombardi, Paul Brown, Bill Walsh, Bill Parcells and Bill Belicheat never played a snap in the NFL.

Think of the best professor you had in college, the guy you learned from the most. Did he/she dominate in their field professionally outside of higher education? Unlikely.

  9. Brandon Says:

    Hey Big Hog,

What position did you play in the NFL? None? So does that mean you shouldn’t talk about any positions… are or were you a media talking head? No? So does that mean you also aren’t qualified to comment about them? Point is, because I’m sure it’s way over your head, is that he is a media member and he can talk about what he wants. Also, despite him being an average NFL lineman for numerous years, his experience in and around football as well as his near daily access to the Buccaneers makes him far more CREDIBLE (not creditable) in the INs and Outs of this team than sportswriters from the MidWest.

  10. cobucfan Says:

I would share Momo’s table with Beckles anytime!
    1 Beckles = 10 big dogs

  11. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I like Ian Beckles a lot. However, on the future of this years Bucs, I disagree with him. As another poster pointed out, we had one of the top offenses in the NFL. However, we could not keep a lead.
I don’t think it is a reach at all to say we are going to flat shock some teams.
I don’t feel we are a playoff team, YET.
However, I do feel we are gonna be drastically improved, from last year.

  12. K_bassuka Says:

Beckles it’s a “me” guy always looking for attention and his own benefit. While the media should be asking for local input to talk about the Bucs the last person anyone should be asking it’s Beckles clueless @ss.

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Beckles just wants attention, and when he doesn’t get it, he claims racism.

Years ago, I respected him. But then his true colors came out. He’s a racist and a hater willing to say anything to garner interest.

A real talent doesn’t say, ‘You should ask me!’

A real talent focusses on doing their job and the media seeks them out as a result.

    Like Ira.

  14. Kobe Faker Says:

“End of this year, everyone will come to a conclusion that we need a total rebuild

Both JW3 and the Bucs will amicably depart for the benefit of each party

JW3 to further his development needs to move on to a secure well run franchise and the Bucs need JW3 2nd round trade value and a total reconstruction of the franchise

End of the year, everyone will be agreed of change and tired of the status quo. It is always about the QB and the Bucs and the fanbase will decide to choose someone else in the draft to be the face and hope of the franchise

Have you seen this picture before? History repeats itself”

    Tyson Fury

  15. Defense Rules Says:

Wow, this thread has gotten hard to follow. Beckles provides an ‘opinion’ to get the ball rolling. BigHog provides an ‘opinion’ on not just Ian’s ‘opinion’ but also provides his ‘opinion’ of Ian. The floodgates open and the ‘opinions’ on the ‘opinions’ … and the ‘opinionators’ start flowing. Joe likes Ian, so he comes to Ian’s defense. This is what makes JBF.com fun. A little flaky sometimes, but fun.

Since Bama is my adopted college team (hey, my wife graduated from there), I’m siding with AlabamaBucsFan on this one … “it is not a stretch to think we can be a surprise team”. Making the playoffs THIS year will be very difficult to be sure, but at this moment in time our 2019 record is just as good as every other NFL team. Others had achieved a significant turnaround in 1 year… with less. Why NOT us?

  16. Joe Says:

Beckles just wants attention, and when he doesn’t get it, he claims racism.

Can you cite any successful business, specifically in media, that strives to be ignored?

  17. Race to 10 Says:

Local media know no more than national which should be embarrassing because all you do is cover one team. How many 8-8 seasons did this site predict. People claimed they would make the playoffs after than 9-7 season for a team with less talent then than now all because of the 9-7 record. Being scared of playoffs because of what the team did under the previous regime is dumb but its happening anyway

  18. Buc4evr Says:

Beckles has a good chance of being right. This team has not fully addressed all the problem areas. I’d be happy if the Bucs could go 8-8 this year.

  19. #1bucsfan Says:

Beckles has no clue what he says. This team a few years ago was 9-7 an on the verge of making the playoffs then we self destructed. Our team now is better than that 9-7 team we had an the coaching is much better. We have a dominant passing offense add a average run game average defense an ST an watch us END THE DROUGHT!!!

  20. SCBucsFan Says:

Beckles is a small town Steven A. Smith wanna be. His opinions matter nothing to me.

  21. NOSBOS Says:

What #1 just said. Again the two teams in last years super bowl were ranked 19th and 21st in defense. 30 point offense the new era defense.

  22. The Buc Realist Says:

So funny to hear all the sheep defending the garbage!!!!!! Only to watch in a few months that they are shocked that they were told the truth months ago!!!!!!!! By Oct they will be discussing who the new QB will be, In Nov they will say that this team will need “real” coaching again!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. Kobe Faker Says:

“Going to be a contest between Miami and the Bucs dualling each other for QBs Tua or Herbert

Can You be a “real” fan under “sheeps” clothing?”

    Kobe Faker

  24. Hodad Says:

What did he say that isn’t true? GMC was the heart of one of the worst defenses in the NFL, no loss there. Remember when we were on hard knocks, and everyone was predicting we’d be surprise team, and make the playoffs? Surprise, we went 5-11, followed by 5-11, only an idiot would think we’re a playoff team this year. Not saying it can’t, or won’t happen, just saying right now there’s no evidence to support thinking it will happen. I’m hoping we will be that team this year, but my hopes have been more disappointing then reality with the Bucs. Beck is right.

  25. TampaTown Says:

    | Of national NFL reporters “don’t nobody watch the Buccaneers.”
I’ve been saying this for years. It’s the reason why John Lynch and Ronde Barber aren’t already in the HOF. It’s why when analysts say Ronde was a “system corner” I lose my mind. It just means you never watched the Bucs.

  26. tye Says:

“don’t nobody watch the Buccaneers.” – Consistent failure year after year for decades will do that..

Nobody gets excited about backing Losers!

  27. BigHog Says:

Brandon :I never said he shouldn’t have his say my main point is talk about what you know, your position, i also realize that you can learn to be a great coach and never have played the game! He said GMC was was the leader of a garbage defense….that had 11 other starters on the field with him and they lost games together…not as a unit but as a team! For those who didn’t like McCoy …he gone!! Don’t keep spilling your milk …pour it over your corny ass comments! If this us going to be a winning year this team must come together and play for one another! Thanks for the spell check Brandon and I hope you had a happy Father’s Day!!! Go Bucs Go Suhy!!

  28. Buccfan37 Says:

Beckles opinions are at least readable. I’m ready to cut the cord and just listen on the radio, all the while expecting a improved Bucs season.

  29. Oregonbucsfan Says:

“Surprise, we went 5-11, followed by 5-11, only an idiot would think we’re a playoff team this year. Not saying it can’t, or won’t happen, just saying right now there’s no evidence to support thinking it will happen”…Hodad

Watch out, Hodad, you are insulting 2-3 very sensitive Pollyannas on this site.
here is a more telling fact. Bleacher Reports had an article that headlines the 10 franchises set up best for the future. Can you guys guess who was NOT on that list? Another article talks about every team’s biggest question mark. Guess who/what was the BUCs’ biggest worry? OL- -no. DL- -no. RB- -no. It was Famous Jameis!! The cornerstone of the franchise. Oh yeah, we’re playoff bound for sure. Any fool can see that.

  30. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

#1Bucsfan – How are the Bucs better???? Their best edge rusher is out with a broken neck, their #2 WR was replaced with a guy that has been a major bust in the league, the RB group is one of the weakest in the league, their is no legitimate RG on the team right now, the secondary waived its #1 CB from last year and we now have a bunch of rookies running around back there. This team went 5-11 the last two years and got worse in the offseason. I just don’t see why our fans can’t be realistic about this team.

  31. christopher Says:

BigHog, don’t be dumb. Beckles blocked people like McCoy his whole life. He knew McCoy was a big athletic body and basically nothing more. Weird a guy named “Big Hog” wouldn’t know that an OG can absolutely critique a DT.

  32. Jmarkbuc Says:

    TDTB

    With all due respect,

Our “BEST” corner last year was a guy who was “not paid enough” to cover a number one, and couldn’t make a tackle to save his life.

That along with a “wait and see” secondary scheme. So a bunch of rookies running around back there, with some coaching might actually be much improved…

    You’re lamenting Grimes? Seriously?

Are the Bucs a playoff team? probably not, I say we pick up 2-3 wins just by having a real coaching staff though.

  33. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Point about Grimes is that he was the best they had. I highly doubt rookie CBs taken in the 2nd and 3rd rounds are going to come out tearing it up, and the guys with experience haven’t shown they are good. You also didn’t mention JPP being out and all of the other issues I pointed out. I hope I am wrong, but this team appears to be worse, not better, than last year.

  34. Lord Cornelius Says:

So to be a “real fan” we need to predict a total meltdown and rebuild this season?

This has to be one of the weirdest collections of fan personalities online lol.

That’s probably what happens when you lose a lot.

    #BucsFans=What?
    #WeAllNeedTherapy

  35. Eric y Says:

Just because someone is a average player on a team does not make that person lack knowledge of football you freaking dumb azz… I swear tampa has some of the stupidest fans in football… I’m ashamed to know I’m in a group of dumb butts

  36. Jmarkbuc Says:

    TDTB

Sure, All valid points…but could we really be worse on D than last year? I firmly believe that the departure of GMC and Kwon is addition by subtraction. As for all the unproven players. you gotta start somewhere and accountability goes a long way.

OLine definitely a problem. still. As long as JLicht or those of his ilk are the GM, we may never ooze with talent.

I’m an old school dyed in the wool Bucs fan, what’s important to me is having a Defense that kicks A$$ and takes names. I’ll take a 17-14 win anyday..Alas the NFFL ( National Fantasy Football League) has turned the sport into the run and gun NBA.

  37. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Any media that lauds GMC for leadership has no idea what he ever led the Bucs to…

Any media that lauds Kwon when he was signed away by Lynch probably has never seen this defense the last 4 years

  38. NOSBOS Says:

Only and idiot couldn’t realize the bears were 5 and 11 in 2017 no playoff appearance and the very next year 12 and 4 and in the playoffs. Where do you lames come from. Have not heard of parity???

  39. Joe Says:

    Have not heard of parity???

Given the fact the Bucs own the longest playoff drought in the NFC, safe to assume some folks at One Buc Palace have not.

  40. NOSBOS Says:

That may be true Joe. But someone finally had an epiphany.. They hired BA.

  41. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Beckles is right twice a day like a broken clock. It’s usually not about football.

  42. BucsminsterFuller Says:

The only “Surprise” about this team is that we are unsure if we want to sign our quarterback to a long term deal.

  43. Mike Johnson Says:

IF this Buc team does not finish at least 8-8, The Boo Birds are gonna drop a load..of manure everywheres.

  44. BigMacAttack Says:

Ian is on my he money here. As a Buc fan, I am cautiously optimistic with this new staff. Would I bet on the Bucs right now? No way Jose, now a dime. This team has more to prove than any other NFL team. McCoy was junk and he didn’t fool Ian. I think most former Bucs just kept quiet about how weak and bad he was.

  45. BigMacAttack Says:

“my he” is the iPhone autocorrect version of “the”. Smart phones yeah right
