GMC Talks Bruce Arians

June 12th, 2019

GMC offers his take.

Apparently, former Bucs stud defensive tackle and new Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians teaming up was not meant to be.

As we all know, Arians, at the NFL owners meetings this past spring, stated GMC was not as disruptive as he used to be. And of course, GMC was later released by the Bucs.

He signed a contract with the Stinking Panthers last week and this week he appeared on Ian Rapoport’s podcast “RapSheet and Friends.” There, GMC discussed how he ended up in Carolina. Rapoport asked GMC about Arians’ comments this spring and in short, GMC said that was Arians’ opinion. No harm, no foul.

“Here is what I will say: A lot of things take place for whatever reasons they do,” GMC began. “Coach Arians has a history of being a great coach. You cannot knock him for anything that he has done. So far, to this point, he has a history of being a great coach.

“And all he did was speak his mind. If that is how he felt, that is how he felt. You can’t knock a person for that. It’s just that. It’s an opinion. Coach Arians never had a chance to be around me. He doesn’t even know me. He doesn’t know me as a man. He doesn’t know me as a player. He just knows what he has seen from afar. And from afar, that is his opinion. And that’s OK! If that is how he felt. That doesn’t affect me and what I am capable of.

“Last season wasn’t my best season but how often has he seen players have up and down seasons? Even if it was a down season it doesn’t mean that was the real me. He was just giving his opinion and his opinion is what it is.”

Of course, it hurt GMC that he was being paid not to have a down year. If a team has millions in cap space, no big deal. When a team is in cap hell, especially a losing team, that salary sticks out big time.

As GMC later said in the pod, players move on to new teams in the NFL all the time. He cited how Warren Sapp left the Bucs and how Randy Moss played for several teams.

Gerald seems like a real good dude but 13 mil was just too much of the salary cap to commit to a slightly above average DT.

  2. Buc1987 Says:

    OM….GAWD!!!

    Good riddance Nancy-Boy.

  3. Sport Says:

It is what it is. No reason to cry over spilled milk as they say. I like GMC was it a bad year definitely was he over paid for the cap hell we’re in definitely. Is he gone u guested it, definitely. Some r mad some r happy but most of us r just ready for the season n hoping the bucs r at least respectable this year 🤷‍♂️💯

  7. C2asante Says:

Gerald continues to exhibit considerably more class as a man than his detractors. Many could learn from his example.

  8. Jean Lafitte Says:

GMC is right about players moving on. His production no-longer justified his salary. It had to happen, so lets move on and talk about the new 2019 Bucs. Savvy

  9. Buc believer Says:

Joes love affair with GMC is still burning strong! You need to get over this guy Joe! He wasn’t that good!

  10. Nick Says:

@Bucs Believer, get use to it. We will hear about it all year from these guys. They just can’t let it go.

Did GMC ever think it was a collective and mutual feeling amongst all the brass. brass?

He still doesn’t get it. Are you a good player, YES. 6M-8M. Are you a great player, maybe 7M-10M. Are you a dominating elite leader? 13M-18M Never!

  11. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

GMC is still a class act !!

  12. Totally Exonerated Says:

I had a bad year last year but he don’t know how classy I am. He’ll never know how having fun is the most important part of my game plan. Has he seen me in a kimono? All these things are more important than winning. Oh well, he has his opinion and I have mine.

  13. Bucnjim Says:

The problem with hi def TV is the fans see more than ever but the coaches see everything.

  14. German Buc Says:

    TBBF, you made my day!

  15. Hodad Says:

That’s O.K. Joe, keep running the GMC, DJax stories. As long as they’re both gone, I’m happy.

  16. DBS Says:

5-11 2 years in a row. This entire team sucks and not worth the money for any of them. And not what they are going to pay America’s Alternate Pro Bowl QB. Especially if they have to still bring in all this help to fix him.

  17. Pick6 Says:

I think GMC’s agent let Licht know sometime last year that GMC would not entertain a pay cut, so there was no need for Bruce to ask. There are issues of personality and fit that are cited along with the salary issue, but I think if the Bucs were a team with $20+ million of cap room they probably would have rolled with the overpaid guy and drafted his eventual replacement on Day 2. Because they needed the savings to sign their #1 pick, they forced the issue.

  18. mark2001 Says:

Fair way of looking at Arians in many ways….however…what he saw on film is who you really are, Gerald. It is the “REAL you”. And when a player is on the wrong side of 30, and you see the film, you have to ask what the upside and downside are…and this is he bottom line…overpaying for a guy based upon his film last year, that is on the wrong side of 30, cutting his pay if he agrees, and hope he doesn’t pull a Grimes on you, or allowing him to walk and use the money to replace him. I think the third alternative was the most rational.

  19. Couch Fan Says:

They only thing that GMC is correct about is that BA doesnt know him as a man. But he has all the game (and practice) tape that he needs to know who GMC the player is. And he based his more than qualified opinion on just that. Funny how none of the fan boys want to mention that little tid bit. Also funny that some of us have been saying the exact same thing about GMC for the last few years and we didnt need any game or practice tape to conclude it. Thank you for the years of service and good riddens.

  20. MBiggy Says:

Respect any person/Man who plays in the NFL. Yes, players move on. Im just surprised GM didnt move on quicker considering the tormenting seasons he endured. BA coming in would of course, have an ‘opinion’ but sadly in GM’s case, opinion is FACT. “…Capable of..”? Sounds like “potential” IMO. Age, and progression are facts. Not everyone can be like Sapp, Rice, Lewis, Randal, LT, and the list goes on. But GM is yet to be seen again as a ‘threatening’ DLineman. BA called a Spade, a Spade on GM and others thus far. Still yet to see Suh be the player we’ve known too. So #JoeBucsFans may have to hold their breath even still…. We’ll see. #GoBucs

  21. 813bucboi Says:

    whata nice guy…..lol….

    F’ING LOSER!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  22. DB55 Says:

I wasn’t going to say anything but I just can’t believe people are this naive. Please look up gmc stats for the past 3 years and tell me he had one bad year. Jeezus Christmas! Three years in a row with 30 something tackles and 6-7! sacks at 16 mil per year. Smh.

Clinton McDonald could have given us that production for 3 mil per year. Opinion my arse!!!!

  23. Cobraboy Says:

“He doesn’t know me as a player.”

I guess McCoy thinks he was invisible on film.

  24. Youngbucs Says:

Meanwhile in Wakanda Batgirl is playing with a litter of kittens.

  25. Race to 10 Says:

A class act off the field so what, turn on the tape and you see him getting pushed in the run game like hes on skates. That’s not a down year that’s every year. Everyone judges tape you know like the opponents you play from week to week.

That was not an opinion, it’s based on experience a lot of people love to forget 2017 when the d line was invisible and never touched Peterson and everyone else was afraid to tackle him. BA was beating us 31-6 in the third. Yea he had a down game that day too. Brent Grimes led the team in tackles and Geraldine had just two tackles on the stat sheet, chris Baker had 5 tackles in that game

Pretty good guess BA doesn’t want to be embarrassed like koetter

  26. gotbbucs Says:

    @ cobraboy

Technically he was for the most part invisible on the field, for about three years running.

  27. Snook Says:

    Hey Gerald:

He put on the tape and saw a loafer. That’s all he needed to see and what a lot of us have known for a long time.

  28. T REX Says:

Worst fans ever. We deserve all we get. Stay classy Tampa.

  29. Ken Stevenson Says:

The toughest thing for an aging player is realizing they are an aging player. Just a half step slower is the difference between all-pro and retired.

  30. 99.97.92.55.47.40.28.20.7 Says:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. GMC is a HOF talent. Should be an All Pro this year and each year he is on an average or above average team. If he somehow wins a Super Bowl before throwing in the towel, and plays for at least 3 more years (all All Pro), he has a shot at the Hall.

  31. Mike Johnson Says:

T Rex..We are not the worst fans. Its just that..this franchise has been losing for so long, the fans would buy bottled miracle Buc wins if they thought it would make us a champion. Buc fans just cannot help themselves from being down on a scapegoat (s).I mean, I downed a whole bottle of Tequila on Sundays just to..numb the pain of losing. Both before and after. And I think Because GMC is a class guy who takes the high rode..even pisses disgruntled fans off more because he just..smiles. Not the worst fans just…frustrated thats all.
