Bad News On Justin Evans Injury

June 4th, 2019

Joe warned Ira Kaufman Podcast listeners two weeks ago rumblings on the health of safety Justin Evans were troublesome.

And trouble was confirmed today.

Evans was spotted in a boot at practice and Bucco Bruce Arians told media after practice that Evans had a procedure on his toe and little detail was offered.

The toe woe for Evans started in Week 10 last season. He tried to come back from it and eventually was placed on injured reserve in December.

It’s December.

It’s a toe.

Turf toe can be brutal and it has derailed many careers. Evans, of course, relies on his wheels and extreme athleticism.

Joe would bet a few nickels that rookie Mike Edwards and Jordan Whitehead are the opening day safeties.

Its almost like the coaching staff knew this going into the draft… hmmm..

  2. SteveK Says:

Sad, seems like wins ago when Evans picked off Brady on TNF.

I would’ve picked a RB in the second round over Evans. J just don’t understand Lixht’s assessment of talent. No RB, no trenches- no wonder he sucks worse than Dom.

  3. Lord Cornelius Says:

Well good thing we drafted a S now and signed the guy from the Packers. Not like Evans was the savior of this D. Next man up.

Still sucks. Dude flashed a lot of potential when he wasn’t neutered and lined up 50 yards off the ball.

  4. Barbosa Says:

I wish turf toe had a different name. it has ended many careers and is no joke.

  5. webster Says:

Can we plaease stop being ignorant fans? You cant account for injuries!!! Drafting a running back in the 2nd round would not have allieviated the risk of injury (see cook, guice etc). Evans is talented and anyone with common sense can see that. You cant bash licht because someone has an injury. Its football!!!

  6. Greg Says:

Thank you Webster. We live in such an emotionally immature society where people wanna vent negativity on blogs and social media. It’s like they don’t even know how to look at things objectively anymore they’re just in a contest to be the biggest jerk. I like Evans I hope he’s able to come back but this is not one of the reasons to bash Light. There are plenty of other reasons from drafting Winston, Roberto Aguayo, and not addressing the trenches.

  7. #1bucsfan Says:

    So tru Webster

  8. JimmyJack Says:

Webster these surely are same fans that called VitaV a bust. Won’t never change.

  9. 813bucboi Says:

as long as conte aint starting, we good….lol….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  10. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @webster

    For sure.

And the RB we likely take that draft is Kareem Hunt anyway per the pre draft chatter if we want to play that game, which would put us in a hole at RB still with his suspension.

I wanted Demarcus Walker I can admit – which turned out to be a bad opinion so far lol. He’s done nothing with the Broncos and is now changing positions.

Godwin was quite the steal in that draft. Howard was lucky

  11. gotbbucs Says:

I think the defensive side of the ball for this team will be unrecognizable come September, and that’s a good thing.

  12. NOSBOS Says:

JE was going to have his hands full keeping a starting spot regardless of health. Mike Edwards fits the mold of Tyrin Mathiue that’s why he was drafted him and is said to be full of brains on the back in the same way Devin is in the middle. Whitehead was going to push Justin man because his game so full of heart and tenacity two traits that stand out this new staff.

  13. Allbuccedup Says:

I agree the defensive side of the ball will look completely different. They are dropping like flies who’s next? Maybe VH3.

  14. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

Looks like he’s back to Bustin’ Evans after a couple of turnover flash plays. Lucky for Licht Weight he’s not accountable for his drafts or free agency signings. Brought in Bucco Bruce…and all was forgiven.

  16. webster Says:

    @ lord c

That is why i laughed at the media and fans claiming the bucs had a bad draft this year. Having edwards may turn out to be a god send. Thats why arians said before the draft…so what if you alreday have two, now you have 3. You dont know how things will play out ie injuries, trades, suspension etc

  17. Anonymous Says:

Thank goodness more than half of our roster is composed of defensive backs.

  18. Buczilla Says:

Thank goodness more half of the roster is composed if defensive backs.

  19. webster Says:

    @ greg

How drafting winston a mistake? You needed a qb and he is much better than mariotta.

  20. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Brian Kelly comes to mind…surgery is a month in a boot….I had the procedure and it was a year before I was completely over it and that was in the real world not football

  21. TexBuc Says:

With today’s news drafting 3 secondary players makes perfect sense.

When I daydream about my own life and what I should or should’ve done I can change it and make my life so I made no past mistakes, but when I snap back I still see two failed marriages and realize how happy I am with wifey number 3.

  22. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Hallux rigidus is what I had

  23. NOSBOS Says:

Aww,so people are finally starting realize how fantastically stupid it sounds to reference this defense as terrible based off last season. You’re right,2019s defense will be totally unrecognizable. Considering there will probably only be 3 at the most starters from last season on the field opening day.

  24. Race to 10 Says:

So that explains all the secondary signings and drafts but still have given up a 2019 pick for an edge rusher

  25. Allbuccedup Says:

I guess we will draft 3 dbs in 2020 draft.

  26. Nutt Says:

Where is Bucannon in all of this? Isnt he supposed to be a LB/S hybrid? I have not heard much to his name this spring

  27. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Sign Tre Boston already!

  28. NO RISK IT NO BISCUIT Says:

“Aww,so people are finally starting realize how fantastically stupid it sounds to reference this defense as terrible based off last season.”…..Perfectly said!

People get sucked into lazy off season journalism. You got to milk the cow somehow. Make it last baby..make it last. Training camp is around the corner.

We watch and get entertained. lol

    Go Bucs!!!

    The Curse Of Carl Nicks

  30. SteveK Says:

    Webster,

The point I was trying to make was where is the talent in the secondary after all of the draft capital spent?

    1- Heargraves? #11 pick
    2- Ryan Smith- 4th round pick-ok
3- Justin Evans in round 2
    4- Carlton Davis- round 2
5- MJ Stewart in round 2
6 Jordan Whitehead in round 4
7 Jamal dean in round 3
8 Sean Bunting in round 2- over Greedy?
9 Mile Edwards in round 3

The point is, can we spend one/some of those picks kna RB/Trench players? FFS, is our secondary as good as the amount of draft capital invested? Hell no and that’s a problem.

  31. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Either that or trade for (Green Bay’s) S – Josh Jones

  32. Allbuccedup Says:

Agree luvmybucs release or trade someone and sign Tre Boston to the infamous one year prove it.

  33. TOM Says:

Just another day in Buc land.

  34. Todd Says:

How much do we save by cutting Evans? And cut JPP already. Bring on Tre Boston and THEN declare our secondary “fixed.”

  35. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Bucco Bruce Arians told media after practice that Evans had a procedure on his toe and little detail was offered.” Seems strange that it’s taken the Bucs’ medical staff SIX months to figure out that he need a ‘procedure’ on his toe, BUT … hopefully it works and Justin makes it back for the start of the season.

Bucs still have some decent depth at Safety with Brice, Edwards, Whitehead, Stewart plus Johnson & several others. Not to mention that Bucannon also plays some safety. There’s some experience in that group, just not a huge amount. They’ll be OK.

  36. JGhoti86 Says:

Its June 4th. I’m not gonna get too discouraged by this news, yet. I get why the Joe’s report on it and everyone in media is in the race to be first on the news….and it is newsworthy, but it’s very early.

In other news, I’m more upset that VH3 took JoeBucsFan.com jersey number than Suh taking McCoys’.

  37. FireJasonLicht Says:

As much as I cant stand licht I wouldn’t go as far as saying he is worse than Mark Dominick. Lichts teams have been wayyyyyy more talented.

  38. 813bucboi Says:

    LC

i wanted DW too…..him switching positions imo, is more about the staff vs him…..

he was great at getting after the passer…..denver wanted him to drop into coverage…..that aint him…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  39. JGhoti86 Says:

    @ Joe

Sorry to be off-topic, but something stood out to me today during BA’s PC after practice. He made the statement, regarding a question asked about Blaine Gabbert and the backup QB’s. He said, “this is the first time Blaine has been in the same offense twice in his career”. I’m confused, because during his introductory PC (I think it was, don’t quote me on that), he said, that he thought Byron Leftwich did a great job last year as playcaller, “considering it wasn’t his offense”. So which is it? Is this the same offense two years in a row for Gabbert or is this not the same offense Leftwich ran w/ Gabbert last year…

  40. Jean Lafitte Says:

They still have Johnson, Brice, and Stewart with some experience. They could bring back Conte, or Tandy off the couch to compete. They’re at least good depth.

  41. Allbuccedup Says:

Apparently Stevek JL thinks we only need to draft defensive backs and kickers.

  42. Pickgrin Says:

Sucks because Evans flashed some real talent when he was healthy.

Hopefully this “procedure” provides a legit “fix” for Evans and he can get back to playing ball at some point later this year.

I’m high on the Mike Edwards pick though and Whitehead looked like a real gamer last year as a rookie so we get to see if Bowles can work some magic coaching up all these young secondary players.

  43. webster Says:

    @ steve k

You questioned his evaluation of talent and i pointed out that evans is talented. Also, you questioned licht drafting bunting over greedy. Do you realize 6 conerbacks were drafted before greedy? Were all 6 of these gms wrong or just licht? Obviously there was something off with greedy that mel kiper or todd mcshay or whereever you first learned of greedy did not know. Thats why teams interview and bring players in for visits and 6 gms saw a cornerback that they felt was better period.

  44. Tom S. Says:

Mr. No risk it no Biscuit protege Jason Licht sat on his hands during the 2017 Draft as some guy named Dalvin Cook was falling through the second round that year. The rumor was Licht made attempts in vain to trade up, presumably the price was too steep for him as the Vikings moved up from 48 (along with 4th rd pick 128) to get Cook at 41. The Bucs, sitting at 50 used the selection on Justin Evans. They would later use the 125th (4th) and 204th (6th) round selections to move up to take Kendell Beckwith.

The Rich Hill draft value of the Vikings offer was 140.52, the Bucs used 139.23 points on Evans and Beckwith. You can see why the Bengals took the Vikings offer and you can see how Licht seems to only pay up to get his man from FSU in the second round if it’s Roberto Aguayo.

  45. Hodad Says:

I scratched my head when Licht drafted him. Though it’s do mainly to injuries, he’s another Licht bust. Could never stay healthy, and only ever showed was flashes of a good player.

  46. I’m a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

Jean Lafitte Tandy could start still yet for the Bucs!! You should see him great shape and physically in as good a shape as ever!! Bucco Bruce would love him!!

  47. AwShbucs Says:

Kids definitely had an unfortunate string of luck to start his career. First he gets blatantly misused by bumbling Mike Smith. And now suffering from a chronic toe injury.

I feel for the kid and hope he makes a swift recovery. But I gotta be honest. I even commented on the night he was drafted that I couldn’t help but to think we’d have been far better off using that 2nd rounder on Kareem Hunt or Alvin Kamara.

    Still think im right…

  48. Bradentonbuc Says:

@jghoti86 last year the cardinals had Mike McCoy as OC until he got fired half way thru the season, then Leftwich took the reins and likely ran something off of that original scheme (not sure how different they are). But that is the discrepancy

  49. Bradentonbuc Says:

Also Gabbert was on the titans

  50. Allbuccedup Says:

Pats just released Sefarian Jenkins time to trade Brate.

  51. Allbuccedup Says:

And sign one of the many free agent safeties.

  52. SteveK Says:

Thanks for your reply Webster. You make a good point. I question the talent because of the results of the team. I am also confused as to how you can draft 9 DBs in rounds 4 or higher, with one being the #11 overall pick in 2016, and you still have that many questions?

Hopefully clarity comes this year. Can’t wait.

Also, I would have taken a RB, or trench players with some of those picks.

Another poster pointed out that JL took 9 DBs and 2 K, without drafting more trench talent and competition at RB.

I thought Darrell Henderson was signed, sealed and delivered to us on draft night.

Also, why not draft more competition for RG? Why even move Marpet off of RG? With losing results, come questions and not a lot of answers.

  53. JGhoti86 Says:

    @ Bradenton

Yea, my b. I realized that after I posted it. I thought BAhad said first offense two years consecutively. Had I done more Blaine Gabbert before posting, I could’ve figured that out for myself. That was a bad post and I can admit my mistake…so at least I got that going for me :p

Thanks for reply though. Cheers 🙂

  54. JGhoti86 Says:

Blaine Gabbert research ** before posting ^^^

  55. NOSBOS Says:

Seem to be a nice little chemistry forming between Jameis and Scotty Miller. He’s been mentioned in what seems like every takeaway on the Bucs. Practice squad some feel??? Hmm,more 53 man week 1 roster if you ask me.

  56. Lord Cornelius Says:

Edwards / Dean with INTs today and multiple pass break ups it sounds like.

Looking forward to the hardcore Winston notes

  57. D-Rome Says:

Nothing says the secondary is “totally fixed” quite like a serious injury to one of your key players in the secondary.

  58. Eric y Says:

Tough it up … Deion Sanders played his whole career with turf toe… these dudes need to get out there

  59. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Sad stuff. But the curse of Licht continues…

  60. Billy_43 Says:

Obviously, BA and staff wasn’t sold on Hargreaves and Davis only.
Injuries have plagued this team and drafting who they did shows it.

8 of those players will still make this team and it would have been 9.

Can’t pick a true stud every time or it would be easy to win a Super Bowl.

Our obvious deficiency has been the back end and hearing BA say he believes it is totally fixed and already knowing this news. it is truly next man up, and BA must believe he is already on this team, IE Stewart, Whitehead, Bucannon etc.

  61. TampaTown Says:

    @Webster:
Good to see you back. Thought you might have been a part of the ridiculous name changing that goes on here constantly.

  62. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @813

Def could be the case. I know no one was happy with Vance Joseph here, but their defenses were still strong aside from Walker, and Bradley Chubb had immediate success/development as a rookie.

Hoping for a turnaround for him this year. Broncos likely to surprise some ppl this season IMO between a settled Flacco game managing and their D getting back to elite levels under Fangio, plus what should be a much better O-line & run game.

Broncos Bucs super bowl lol! GO BUCS!

  63. Wesley Says:

Why wasn’t this procedure done months ago?

  64. SenileSenior Says:

Howard was a gift to us from the football gods. I other words we were just plain lucky when he fell to us in that draft. The Best Available guy regardless of position or need came to us.

There is a glimmer of hope if Edwards is one of our starting safeties based on the hints we’ve gotten so far. We will have an extremely young defensive backfield this year. On the other hand the defense is new to all of our guys. In addition none of our opposition should have that good of idea as to what to expect from us early in this season.
    _________
    Go Bucs!!!

  65. SenileSenior Says:

    NOSBOS

If Miller makes it to the 53 on day one I am going to call him a 6th round steal.

Add Perriman to the mix and we could say we have some speed on offense to go along with our speedy defense.

    I am stoked!
    __________
    Go Bucs!!!

  66. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Injuries kill this team so often.

  67. Lamarcus Says:

Justin Evans will be back. Anyone remember him breaking his leg and pulling it back in place in college? I remember a meme going around 3-4 years ago of Evans popping his leg back in place
