Suh’s Fourth Quarter

May 24th, 2019

Crunch time stat.

One knock on former Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is he was invisible in the fourth quarter of games. Not exactly accurate, but it made for a good hollering point.

So the anti-GMC crowd rejoiced not just because the Bucs ran GMC, but because they signed cartoon character defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh to replace him.

Why, to hear the anti-GMC crowd, Suh will take care of things! Suh the Meanie will stomp on an offensive lineman’s leg. That will make teams cower in fear to take the field in the fourth quarter!

Wwweeelll…

Jet-flyin’, kiss–stealin‘, data-analyzin’, Bucs-film-studyin’, limousine-ridin’ Thomas Bassinger of the Tampa Bay Times decided to do some research — that’s his thing — and the results surprised the hell out of Joe and just might surprise every Bucs fan.

So this reminds Joe what Bill Polian suggested this week, that Suh husbands his energy” when he takes plays off (allegedly).

Look, Suh or no Suh; GMC or no GMC, Joe is not the least bit comfortable with what the Bucs currently have on their roster masquerading as a pass rush.

  1. Rod Munch Says:

The pass rush will be vastly improved for the simple reason that Chris Conte and Ryan Smith won’t be starting and playing big minutes. It doesn’t matter if you had Warren Sapp and Simeon Rice if you had complete garbage like Conte and Smith playing behind them.

  2. Clean House Says:

I often JPP take off plays too, but he would regroup.
These guys aren’t super humans. I think the fan expectations are unrealistic.

  3. Defense Rules Says:

There you go again Joe … being unnecessarily negative. For one thing, I couldn’t find a shred of proof anyplace in the article. Were they 1 sack different over their careers? 10 sacks? 50 sacks?

More importantly though, sacks really aren’t the ‘Be all & end all’ when it comes to DLineman effectiveness. One of our MAJOR defensive problems in the 4th qtrs was that we very often couldn’t shut down our opponents’ offense, get off the field, and turn the ball back over to our offense. Why? Too soft against the run in critical downs’ situations. How did Suh & GMC compare in THOSE situations? Which one of them got the most QB pressures in the 4th qtr? How about TFLs in the 4th qtr? Forced fumbles in the 4th qtr?

You might tell Thomas Bassinger that cherry-picking stats to ‘prove some questionable point’ is lazy & unbecoming.

  4. Clean House Says:

    Often saw

  5. DB55 Says:

You guys and your sacks. Suh has twice as many tackles than McCoy. Stop ignoring the obvious.

  6. firethecannons Says:

Joe, why don’t you send Zach to Broward to gather intel on JPP, basically find him and ask him what he knows about his injury.

  7. Unimpressed Says:

Suh isn’t going to make a difference for this team, it’s going to be hilarious when the reality sets in for a lot of the idiots who think a player with attitude is what this team was missing.

  8. Unimpressed Says:

McCoy is still gonna get paaaaaaaiiiiiiiddddd!!! BWAHAHAHAHA and he gets to play for a winner! Poetic justice, he’s ECSTATIC that he was released. 10 teams knocking on his door.

  9. BucEmUp Says:

Maybe the bucs know hoe minor jpps neck really is and his chance to play sooner. Ig you told me we will have jpp, suh, nassib and vea and our lbs (including noah spence)

Only bad coaching could ruin that line

  10. Anglican Says:

Suh doesn’t have alligator arms in the fourth quarter. He’ll help shut down the Run. Unlike Geraldine McFraud

  11. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Is Suh signed yet? If not, why so many article on him?

  12. adam from ny Says:

    wrong holmes ^^^

attitude is contagious…we need a handful of dogs, and you gotta start with one to get 2, 3 or 4…

    we do need #DudesWithTudes

joan jett would smack the sheet out of gmc and he would say
“thank you joan, may i have another”

kong suh would bodyslam the bish

  13. JA Says:

Can’t wait for more creativity from the third graders who regularly post on this site. The pseudonyms of Geraldine and McIcecream are so funny I forgot to laugh.

    @Adam from NY

I’ll check back with you after another dumpster fire of a season to see how much difference adding the “dog” made.

  15. JA Says:

    Defense—

Surprised you criticize Joe for being negative.
Surely you know the haters are Joe’s bread and butter and they need baiting (doesn’t take much). They move the needle, creating havoc between the sane an insane.
Without the haters there would only be us—the true fans that want this team to succeed.
I fear we are a dying breed …

  16. RustyRhinos Says:

Hey Adam from NY can you put in a good word, Joan Jett can smack me, anytime. Lol.

All the negative comments about our new DT, he hasn’t played a down for the Bucs yet. Crazy. Yes attitude is spreadable, but you still to have want it. You need to be able to turn it on and off

  17. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

According to Tampa Bay sport writer Greg Auman, Suh has agreed to a 1 year term- 9.25 mil with incentives up to 10mil but will not sign until next week as he is vacationing in Europe.

  18. El Buco Realisto Says:

    Great!!!! Now compare playoff sacks!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. westernbuc Says:

I think it’s noteworthy that Suh had no suitors, little interest, quietly sat out free agency, and left the Rams for a loser franchise. GMC has ten teams lined up.

  20. Todd Says:

    JA & Defense,

Love both your posts. I made the attempt to admonish Joe for including the unnecessary ad hom “cartoon character” attack. Thought it was classless considering Suh is our newest roster addition and there’s so much to be excited about…if you’re not a cancerous hater.

But alas, my comment was moderated away. Can’t have any push-back on negativity or unnecessary attacks, can we?

  21. Bucnjim Says:

I know Tom Bassinger loves/loved McCoy I see him on twitter all the time. Maybe he can put us a highlight film together of all the game changing plays he’s made the past nine years. He can show us all the touchdown saving tackles, the passes knocked down on third downs, the Sacks that forced punts or saved the lead, the tackles for a loss in the fourth quarter, the QB strip fumbles for turnovers, or just a few crushing tackles. Then we can compare that video of the one’s where he’s dancing on the sideline, laughing it up while we are losing, getting man handled by Offensive lineman, giving up on run plays, out of position on run plays, or apologizing to the opposition. I’d really like to see both and compare them.

  22. Youngbucs Says:

Another fun fact Joe out of three teams that Suh’s been on he’s got 17 more wins than Gerald McCoy

  23. Youngbucs Says:

Including playoff appearances and a super bowl appearance how many fourth quarters in the playoffs has Geraldine gotten sacks?

  24. El Buco Realisto Says:

There is one stat that she-mc dominated over Suh!!!!! And that is going in to the GM’s office with agent and cry about schemes and not being used correctly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Youngbucs Says:

Suh the big meanie is better than Gerald the weenie facts.

  26. JA Says:

    Todd—

Yes, the moderating thing is a bit confounding, but it appears to be more random than focused. If it always targeted criticism of Joe then your last post would would have also made it to the guillotine, which it obviously did not.
That said, if you want to circle the wagons against unfounded negativity from the omnipresent amoeba skulls, my wagon will be there for the insurrection.
We can begin by throwing dictionaries at them. Rumor has it that it has the same effect as garlic against vampires.

  27. ATrain Says:

This is Joe Bucs Fan CORRECT

    SUH IS A BUC

    MCCOY IS Not

    BE A FAN

Part of the reason for the GMC bashing is because of the Blind slobbering love by y’all

Let’s dig up stats that McCoy is better at

MCCOY HELPED UP MORE PLAYERS THAN SUH
MCCOY DANCED IN THE SIDELINE BETTER

    MCCOY LEFT THE BUILDING. BYE

  28. Todd Says:

    JA—

Like Defense Rules, you appear to actually be an adult.

    Refreshing. 👊

  29. Race to 10 Says:

What a dumb argument and never seen so many negative articles about a free agent things the rams media didn’t worry about

Another lazy stat brought up by the few not the many. Jpp has 12.5 nobody cares how many came in the 4th. No one thinks suh is a better pass rusher, he’s a better all around player so call out all the fake stats you want at least this defense front wont be bullied like it has the last decade because suh actually knows run defense

  30. JA Says:

    Todd—

    Merci beaucoup!

  31. DB55 Says:

    Bucnjim

Joe posted that 1 play two days ago in another post. The tipped pass against the Chiefs that was intercepted by Conte.

  32. Todd Says:

    Race to 10–

“at least this defense front wont be bullied like it has the last decade because suh actually knows run defense”

Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding! Right!

  33. DB55 Says:

    Joe,

How many more? 1? McCoy has 1 more 4th qrt sack than Suh? Bro I just pissed my pants, delete this article.

  34. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

The lap dawg media is so butt hurt that mccoy is gone and now are trying to justify how they feel he was great on the field. Because he gave you or your parents or kids a high 5 or bought you a beer or dinner does not make him a hall of fame football player. Jenna Laine and this guy are so upset that mcsoftie is gone it is crazy, now they are all bellyaching about him and his spot in the bucs ring of honor…just let him go and see how some other fan bases react to his tired act

  35. johnnythemoon Says:

McCoy had so many 4th QTR sacks …Quick name me 3 of them ..or 1 of them ….Its not all McCoys fault of course but i just do not remember the guy ever having a game changing play .

  36. BringBucsBack Says:

Of course there’s interest. McCoy is a free-agent, a good player and a good guy. Don’t you think virtually all free-agents are considered by several teams, especially those with household names? Kicking tires costs them nothing. They are not interested in signing him anywhere near the 13mil he was scheduled to make, however. If they are, they’re dang fools! Licht is not the only one, just one of the finest at being the worst.

  37. miken Says:

So for 25% of the game a couple of our highest drafted players actually play well. Good to know.

  38. BigMacAttack Says:

Season hasn’t started and Joe is throwing in the towel. Wuss 😂😂😂

  39. Cobraboy Says:

    “fourth quarter sacks”

    :sigh:

    Casual Madden fans…

  40. Maze Says:

    Good morning again negative Joe

  41. D-Rome Says:

Cobraboy, for years people stated that McCoy “never showed up in the 4th quarter” or “never did anything in the 4th quarter.”

Then, when someone proves McCoy was more productive as a DT in the 4th quarter then the rhetoric shifts to “casual Madden fans.”

Regardless of all of that I hope it works out. I hope the Bucs make a Super Bowl run and I hope all of the sunshine and rainbows fans who see nothing wrong with the team will line up and spike a (nerf) football in my face and laugh.

    6-10.

  42. Wesley Says:

Blah blah blah. Suh for McCoy is a wash, move on.

  43. 813bucboi Says:

    LOL…..

    folks are right…..

joe loved gmc because he was always so nice to the media….lol….

    joe & gmc = realist & smitty…..LOL…

instead of placing the blame on the player that has been apart of the losing culture for almost a decade, he blames kwon & baker…

    GO BUCS!!!!

    Great!!!! Now compare playoff sacks!!!!!!!!!!!!

    BRAVO!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  45. MisterBuc Says:

Y’all (commenters) bashed on McCoy because he wasn’t “showing up in the fourth quarter.” They give you facts and show you his replacement (Suh), is in fact less than, when it comes to putting the QB on the ground. And this is with McCoy playing in significantly less games. I see other excuses are being used. The same mfs that were/are taking shots at McCoy will be regretting it.

Hopefully Suh does play well and has his best season ever, catapulting us into the playoffs.

  46. Bucsfan1988 Says:

Honestly, I don’t give a rat’s a$$ if GMC had all 31 other teams wanting to pay him. It doesn’t matter. We REAL Bucs fans that watch games closely see the fact that:

    1) GMC gets blown off the ball at the end of games when other opponents are running it to work down the clock. He does NOT man up when it counts.

    2) I’ve never seen GMC change the game in terms of momentum with an astounding play in 9 years!!!

    3) He has never made his teammates accountable and demanded more from them.

Although is a great person, this team needs an attitude change to shake off the losing culture. The Bucs need to start putting their foot on opponents throats instead of withering away.

Suh fits this perfectly!! He has way more physicality, and more tackles period!! When you put Suh next to VV, I think Suh could wind up having a monstrous season in terms of sacks as VV will probably get the double-team as he so strong…

Excited to see how the new D will look!

  47. Dapostman Says:

    Suh 9m > McCoy 13m

    It’s not rocket science.

  48. stpetebucsfan Says:

Can someone here who is a stat freak tell me how many times our D gave it up on 3rd and long. I’m not talking 3-10…I’m talking 3rd and impossible like 20-30 yards.

This happened with such frequency in the Smitty/Koetter era that it CAN’T be just one player or position.

  49. unbelievable Says:

Nah Joe is right here, y’all been crying about 4th quarter stats for years. Now suddenly they don’t matter? lol how convenient. 🙄

The only difference is what dapostman said: 9 is less than 13.

  50. SteelStudBuc Says:

Sometimes they have to keep gap responsibility and contain… hence the “taking plays off”. Its not all pass rush.

  51. Jeffbuc Says:

Unbelievable he didn’t give us fourth quarter stats. He just said McCoy has more sacks in the 4th quarter than suh. And we didnt see the stats just a statement about stats. McCoy could have 7 4th quarter sacks in his 9 years and suh could have 6. But suh could also have 89 tackles in the 4th quarter and mccoy have 45. Who would you take 89 tackles and 6 sacks or 45 tackles and 7. You can mislead stats to be whatever you want. But give me tackles in the 4 th quarter. Becasue usually we are down in the 4th and trying to make a stop as they run the ball. So tackles are important.

  52. Jeffbuc Says:

And this article is a lie. Everyone call him out. Nfl.com has situational stats for the player each year. So I just looked at there whole career 4th quarter stats year by year. And it’s not even close. McCoy has 79 tackles and 17 sacks in the 4th quarter in his career. And suh has 152 tackles and 18 sacks. So suh almost has double the tackles and one more sack. Anyone can go check if they don’t believe me. Google McCoy 4th quarter stats. Then click on nfl situational stats. So Bassinger flat out lied.

  53. Jeffbuc Says:

Suh 152 tackles 18 sacks career 4th quarter.
McCoy 79 tackles and 17 sacks career 4th quarter
Bogus article. Bassinger ssshhhhhhh with the made up stat

  54. Snook Says:

McCoy loved getting sacks in garbage time late in games. Pad those stats!

ONE TIME first team All Pro!

  55. SenileSenior Says:

The obsession with sacks is a result of the 4-3 mindset that dominates our thinking in Buc Land.

Bowles represent the “new wave” of NFL defenses. Most of us posting will have to work to clear our minds of the past.

This can help make the upcoming season much more fun to watch.

I remember when on this website not so long ago. We were told that you don’t measure DT from the number of sacks.
    I wonder what changed.

  57. SenileSenior Says:

    Go Bucs!!!

  58. Buc1987 Says:

Tackles from a DT is much more important than sack totals imo.

    How’s that stat?

  59. chopshopp Says:

The DL and pass rush is going to surprise a lot of people because this isn’t the same 4-3 we’re used to. We will actually blitz; blitz inside LBs, blitz nickel DBs, blitz off the edge, blitz outside LBs, etc. It’s going to be a versatile defense that won’t be one dimensional. The CBs are gonna have to cover though.

I trust Todd Bowles and Kacy Rodgers are going to make offenses uncomfortable without JPP.

  60. BucsFan90 Says:

So the hitjob from local media continues. I hope you guys will bring that same energy when you interview Suh in person lol

  61. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

DB55 you McCoy haters said he sucked in the 4th quarter and never made big plays. Soooooo now it is pointed out that as bad as McCoy was in the 4th quarter, Suh was even worse. So delete your post!

  62. Bucsneedhelp Says:

Maybe Suh slight better than Mccoy. 9 mil vs 13 mil I can understand. But if we are talking millions how could even think about not releasing JPP, just saying.

  63. Isaac haggins Says:

    @ Adam ny 👍
