Projecting Jameis

May 24th, 2019

Crystal ball gazing.

So what does the future hold for America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston? Someone is trying to play the part of a Madeira Beach fortune teller for an answer.

And that someone is Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report. So what do Davenport’s tarot cards suggest Jameis will do this year? Well, a lot like the past, very good mixed with some not-so-good.

New Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians uses an aggressive, vertical passing scheme that appears to fit Winston’s skill set, and there’s talent around him in Tampa. But nothing in Winston’s career so far indicates his Jekyll-and-Hyde act won’t continue this year.

Projected Stats: 344 completions, 559 attempts, 4,299 yards, 25 touchdowns, 18 interceptions, 51 carries, 211 yards, 2 touchdowns

Let’s compare: If these numbers hold up, Jameis will have thrown for one completion shy of his season-best, the most yards he’s ever thrown in a season, his second-most touchdowns in a season and tie for his most picks in a season.

Would that be good enough to extend Jameis, franchise Jameis, or just napalm the entire building and get a new coaching staff and draft Justin Hebert, and buckle up for a couple of losing seasons until Hebert finds his groove — if he ever finds his groove?

If Jameis throws for those numbers, the answer is clear to Joe: Keep him.

  1. SteveK Says:

If this scenario unfolds, you cut bait with jameis and retain the coaching staff. You can cut bait with the GM that drafted him #1 overall too.

  2. SteveK Says:

The prediction entails 18ints. Does it also have projected turnovers, including fumbles?

The point is we need to take care of the ball.

Joe- are you saying that if this scenario unfolded, you would keep the “4th best QB in the division”?

How can a team expect to compete with middle of the pack results for top dollar? Look at the Vikings.

  3. cmurda Says:

The coaching staff isn’t on trial in the court of public opinion. Jameis and Licht are. Furthermore, they are tied at the hip. They might as well rent the romantic suite at the Holiday Inn because as one goes so does the other. If Jameis has stats but still throws INT’s at that type of clip, I think the writing would be on the wall to not extend him, fore Licht and let the new GM pick the new franchise QB with a likely high pick. Nevertheless, Arians is here to resurrect JW’s career but B.A is proven. If JW doesn’t rise, Arians stays and, in fact, would have a big say in Tua. I mean, the next QB that is drafted.

  4. Jonathan Limpchimpi Says:

I feel a franchise tag year coming on for JW in 2020. He will play well this season in my opinion. Starting completely over at QB would be a shame. Be careful what you wish for, folks.

  5. cmurda Says:

    *…fire Licht…

  6. Todd Says:

All I can say is that I CAN’T WAIT to hear the audible installed today (I have inside information) where Jameis changes a screen to an up the middle run, “UBER, UBER! RED LIGHT ACCOST! SEXTY NINE HUT HUT HUT!”

  7. Sport Says:

It would depend on the timing of bad Jamies. If it doesn’t cost us games, I could see a Franchise Tag, try again the following year.

The only quarterback I would covet is Trevor Lawrence, so far that kid looks like he has a very bright future.

  8. SteelStudBuc Says:

How many of those 18 interceptions are pick 6? 2 ???
How many fumbles lost? I’m gonna say 8. 2 returned for TD.
I’d say start looking for replacement.
Basically 1.5 turnovers per game and 4 defensive touchdowns…. heck even Blake Bortles couldn’t survive that.

  9. PriMech54 Says:

“But nothing in Winston’s career so far indicates his Jekyll-and-Hyde act won’t continue this year.”

I’m calling absolute BS. So the cleanest 6 (1/2) game stretch of Winston’s career in terms of protecting the football gave no indication that he can played with a more controlled and disciplined demeanor? The most decorated molder of quarterbacks arguably in the history of the game (and for certain in the modern era) coming out of retirement and constantly harping on the PROTECTION, RUNNING GAME and DEFENSE needing to be the top priorities therefore putting the quarterback in much more favorable opportunities gives no indication that he will have more competent coaching and direction?

People sound like straight clowns when they say this kind of stuff.

The most efficient formula for molding young QB’s is, has always been and always will be giving him a nice running attack and a defense that’s at least capable of getting stops in crucial situations.

Jameis is the only qb in the league that knows if he goes 4/4 for 65 yards on a drive when they’re only down 2 points late in the game, just getting them in field goal range will not be enough; the Bucs have left 108 points on the field in these situations since JW has entered the league, which I believe is a good 30+ points above the next squad. It’s mind blowing, really.

You don’t draft a kid at 20 years old into a division with 3 other HOF/SB calibre QB’s , provide him with an absolute dumpster fire and say “go be Aaron Rodgers-South, kid.” and then crucify him when he isn’t an MVP.

It just doesn’t work like that.

  10. DB55 Says:

I would like to see 4500-5k passing yards and 30 TDs. Lofty goals I know.

I’d like to see Mike with 15 of those.

we still need a pro bowl RB.

Richie Igcognito is a FA. Can you imagine Suh vs Richie in practice? Talk about changing the culture.

Incognito, Jensen and Marpet. We need a RT too.

    Shopping list:
RB, RG, RT, CB and maybe a S although I’m kinda all-in I’m Whitehead but wtfdik

Then it’s just a matter of playing together and that’s on BA that’s why he gets paid the big bucks. Go Bucs!!!

    I’m SUHper excited.

  11. Billy_43 Says:

Those numbers would mean BA did NOTHING with Jameis
    NOT buying the 18 picks.
    10 maybe.
    Over 30 TDs.
Pitch and catch with these receivers remember?

Those numbers are still banking on a horrible defense and playing from behind.

    Bucs will Surprise

@PriMech54: please keep talking man. Your words are exactly what some of us know. Half of this fan base needs to sit down read, read, read and reread what you just wrote. They need to find a way to comprehend what you wrote and then read it again just to be sure they actually comprehend. Thank you for that post.

    @primech54

    same, man. Great post.

  15. Reach87 Says:

    What Primech said. Go Bucs!

  16. Clean House Says:

    🔥 Licht

I live in Eugene OR and I’m just not seeing it with Herbert- so don’t do that plan either

  17. Clean House Says:

Pro Mech post of the week

  18. John Says:

Mark my words. Jamies throws for 30 plus tds. Only 12 ints. Best year as a pro.

  19. BigHog Says:

Some kind of running game will boost Jamie’s numbers quite a bit!!

  20. Buczilla Says:

30/15 td to int ratio and 2-3 fumbles (because you know he’s always gonna fumble some) would be good enough for a new contract imho. Now if the Buccaneers win 9 or more games and Jameis posts the numbers that Davenport predicts, I’d franchise him for one year and draft a quarterback high as my backup plan. Going into season’s half a$$ed has always driven me nuts about the Jason Light regime.

  21. rrsrq Says:

Project more running TDS from the RBs and more passes to the RBs. BA the fixer, Clyde Christensen the fixer…, sneaky Jameis will have the yardage and maybe even the completions, but only 25 TDS, naw he will eclipse that and less interceptions says the optimist

  22. Bucsfanman Says:

If we win games, I don’t give a rat’s a$$ about his stats. They are irrelevant.
If we’re not winning games and he’s still turning the ball over, it’s time to move on.
And this irrational fear of losing Jameis is absurd. We won games without him.

  23. OneBuc55 Says:

For those who don’t care to take notice Jameis has gotten better every year…Those praying for his downfall will be very disappointed this year…

  24. onetrickpony Says:

No excuses ! Its now or never

  25. Jonzey Says:

JW will be a pro bowler this year and we will go to the playoffs. I think Jones will have a breakout season rushing for 1300 yards. Both Evans and Godwin will have over 1000 yard, White will win defensive rookie of the year with 120 tackles, 6 sacks, 2 int, 4 pd’s, 1 td. Suh will make the pro bowl, Bunting will have 4 int, Spence will be that dude with 12 sacks.

  26. Pittsshore Says:

The dude left out his double digit fumbles for the year. Furthermore, regarding the yardage and touchdown stats, a Very large percentage of them are racked up during the last 3 to 4 games of the year when those games are meaningless

  27. El Buco Realisto Says:

The only thing worse for a team than looking for a franchise QB, Is thinking your team has one, when they don’t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Why are we still waiting for Jameis to correct the same mistakes he was making in college…..Jameis is as Jameis does….

  29. Pittsshore Says:

    Well stated El Buco

  30. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

“and draft Justin Hebert, and buckle up for a couple of losing seasons until Hebert finds his groove”..???? WHAT??? Joe, we’ve been buckled up for 10 years!!! And HALF of those with years WITH the Faux America’s QB at the helm!!! Cut bait!!!

  31. Pickgrin Says:

What this team needs is WINS!

Winning solves every perceived “problem” the Bucs have.

Winston could have 4500 yards passing – 34 TDs, 11 Ints and 400 yards rushing – and STILL be blamed and scapegoated by a large portion of this fan base if the team goes 4-12 in 2019.

Conversely – if Jameis threw for 2900 yards, 19 TDs, 15 Ints – but the Bucs somehow managed 11 wins in 2019 – then some/many would say that Jameis has finally arrived and now we have our winning franchise QB…

Football is the ultimate team game – and thus far in his college and pro career – (at only 25 years old) Winston has shown MORE than enough for it to be obvious that he is a great talent at QB and just needs more help from his teammates to get over that hump as far as won/loss record which former coach Dirk K. accurately assessed as the “only thing anybody gives a sh!t about in this league”

    Great post btw PriMech!

Winston is going to have a big year in 2019. Whether that leads to wins or not remains to be seen.

How successful Todd Bowles is with his Phoenix project will likely be the most important factor in whether the Bucs go 10-6 or 4-12 in 2019.

  32. Tampabaybucfan Says:

What will be our W-L record with those stats?……..cannot tell….depends entirely on our defensive stats

  33. El Buco Realisto Says:

Tampabaybucsfan is right!!!!!!! The W-L will only be as good as to what this team can drag jw3 too!!!!! Just like a rookie qb, jw3 needs great running game and defense to win!!!!!!!!!!! obviously!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. Jonzey Says:

Our loses came from our defense we gave up to many touchdowns. I think White and Suh will bring that Tampa D back. White is already make our DB’s better by motivating even when he is off the field. Our defense is now talking to each other.

  35. Bird Says:

That’s funny that joe has to remind us that he would keep Jameis.

I think it’s pretty obvious joe would like to do more then just extend Jameis’s contract

  36. passthebuc Says:

Keep him, at what price. Pay him 30 million a year so he can throw for 4000 yards and a 4/5 win season. There is no logic in that scenario.

  37. Buc4evr Says:

I just hope the Bucs can fix the right side of the O-line and get a decent running game this season, then we can accurately gauge Jameis’s progress. He has been playing at a huge disadvantage in Tampa the last 4 years.

  38. WillieG Says:

What if the Bucs go 6-10 and 4 of #3’s picks kill potentially game winning drives?

Would you still keep him Joe?

  39. 813bucboi Says:

    54

    great post

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  40. 813bucboi Says:

i think he throws 25-28TD’s with 10-12 picks…..i dont think BA is dumb enough to keep airing it out if his picks start becoming an issue…..

picks will happen…but like BA said, its the multiple picks in 1 game that kill us….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  41. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The only stat that will matter is wins.

  42. SOEbuc Says:

Trying to call someone’s numbers is pretty stupid in my opinion. Guy should try to write a good article about why Jameis will look the same but gets lazy and writes down what he thinks his stats will be.

  43. Buccernutter Says:

    Primech gets it.

    El Bucco doesn’t.

Ya jameis needs a defense and running game to win. Just like a rookie. Oh ya and Aaron Rodgers. Or pretty much the majority of quarterbacks. SMH

  44. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @SOEbuc

I guess some people like to make predictions. That;s what mock drafts and win loss predictions are all about I reckon.

Personally, I think anyone making predictions now is making them way too soon.

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I like Jameis, so I hope he does well. The thought of going back into a 30 year QB search doesn’t fill me with joy either.

  46. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I will say this though…our first 5-11 year would have been 11-5 if not for kicking and defense…and that’s provable. Kicker missed game winning field goals in two games, and Defense gave up the lead in the final seconds of 4 games that year.

The following yer we would have been 10-6 if not for kicking and defense.

So Jameis already does enough to win. He just needs the rest of the team to do so too.

  47. Jonzey Says:

I agree Buc Bonzai great point

  48. Siege the Bay Says:

if Jameis has that season just franchise tag him the following year, and even one more year until Trevor Lawrence comes out, then trade up for him. No need to get rid of him until you find a BETTER replacement. Key word BETTER

  49. stpetebucsfan Says:

“But nothing in Winston’s career so far indicates his Jekyll-and-Hyde act won’t continue this year.”

I take definite issue with this statement. His last six games of ’18 showed a marked improvement in ball security and judgement.

I concede that six games out of a four season career is a small stat sample but it’s our only hope. With BA as his coach if JW plays as well as the final six games we’ll be fine.

Personally I’m the optimist and I believe JW will explode this year. He has the weapons…the D WILL be improved…and with ANY luck at all we’ll actually have a kicking game. That alone could amount to 2-3 wins we didn’t get in recent seasons. Bad kicking effects not just the number of points scored but impacts strategy as well. Miss an extra point in the first quarter and watch as the HC has to keep in his mind where he’s going to get that odd point. Toss in a missed FG and the challenges just keep on mounting. I HOPE we have found a kicker. At least he has the length and if he’s as accurate as he was in college it will be a new day in Tampa Bay.

““But nothing in Winston’s career so far indicates his Jekyll-and-Hyde act won’t continue this year.”

I take definite issue with this statement. His last six games of ’18 showed a marked improvement in ball security and judgement”

Isn’t that the definition….his last 6 games would be the Dr. Jekyll part.

And to my recollection, JW generally plays well at the end of the year, just enough to keep the town folk and their pitchforks at bay.

    And primech….nice post but

“You don’t draft a kid at 20 years old into a division with 3 other HOF/SB calibre QB’s”

You also don’t draft A QB #1 overall who has character issues…especially one who is inaccurate and has very little touch on the ball.

I would remind you that 2/3 of the time JW had a clean pocket to throw from last year…

  51. SenileSenior Says:

Those 6 games are meaningful precisely because they are the LATEST sample the can be.

We now have the leadership at the top of the coaching staff and the quality of that coaching staff to install a winning culture. I base this on what I have seen only in the last 4 months. A small sample of time but the most significant for us as fans.
    ___________
    Go Bucs!!!

  52. SenileSenior Says:

If you’re a true Bucs fan, you want Jaboo to succeed????????????????????You NEED him to succeed???????????????????? If not, you’re just a troll or a self-seeking individual????????????????????????? I feel that Jaboo will have a MVP-like season, but only time will tell????????????????????? Either way I can’t wait until 2019 reveals what “real” fans already know?????????????????????????

  54. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Can’t extend an at best average QB with 5 years of experience who isn’t taking the next step to get better

    Franchise him then trade him

High salary cap number for Jameis, Evans, Smith, Marpet, Jensen and LVD are preventing the team from possibly upgrading

  55. Pryda...Sec147 Says:

Numbers like I’d extend him too. he will dominate this season.
