Yes, The Bucs Drafted A Kicker (Again)

April 27th, 2019

Drafting a kicker 2.0.

Joe is sorry if folks have a PTSD episode over the next sentence. The Bucs drafted a kicker.

With the organization and fans still stinging from 2016, when the Bucs traded up into the second round to draft an historic bust of a kicker, the Bucs went back for more today. But instead of using a second-round pick on a kicker, the Bucs drafted Matt Gay in the fifth round out of Utah.

If there are any freelance TV producers out there, Joe has a reality TV series to pitch. It is about Bucs kickers. It’s better than Dawson’s Creek even!

  8. SKBucsFan Says:

Better yet , the networks could fight over a Buc reality show. Would be the nations #1 rated comedy.

  9. gotbbucs Says:

    LOL wow

  10. Tom G. Says:

A friggin Kicker !! I thought we were having a decent draft up to now. What a waste. Licht should be relived of his duties before the next round. I’m DONE.

  11. Tbbucs3 Says:

This draft is only solidifying that Jason Licht is what he is.

  12. Unimpressed Says:

    No Guards or Tackles available???

  13. Wisconsinbucsfan Says:

    Smdh….. just wow.

  14. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

At least Licht picked a kicker where a kicker should be drafted – in the later rounds.

  15. Easy Says:

Why do we draft a kicker when it’s obvious we need more DBs!!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

  16. Shane247 Says:

Least inspiring draft I’ve ever witnessed!

  17. gotbbucs Says:

Where’s Ashton Kutcher?….This has to be an episode of Punk’d.

  18. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

What are we doing REALLY!!!, no G or Ot, or Dl or DT!!!!!! Really ????…..nope we are good…🤦🏻‍♂️

  19. SKBucsFan Says:

He wasn’t even the highest rated kicker.

  20. JabooBuc Says:

Kid looks a bit lumpy. Possibly doubles as a Guard?

  21. Tom S. Says:

    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA

So basically Jason Licht has proven to be unable to evaluate DB’s and Kickers in his 6 offseasons here. So naturally he spends 4 of his top 6 picks on DB’s and Kickers to replace his previous failures. Genius!

  22. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

    Superbowl.

  23. ATrain Says:

Really Gay would be there in the 7th round

Cant run the Ball without an OLine

    BS

I’m was not on the fire GM train

    But Now I am

    Ridiculous

  24. Magadude Says:

This has to be Licht’s “F-U” to Bucs fans. They must sure be planning on some OL and RB FAs coming open.

  25. Jeremy Says:

Looks like he could play OT

  26. JimmyJack Says:

Judging by the fan reaction the standard I’m seeing is that since Agryario busted that means we may never draft another kicker again?

Is this how y’all feel? Y’all need to get a grip. Never saw y’all overreact this badly before…………Have y’all calmed down about yesterday’s pick and realized what the plan was after a night rest?……..Or are you gonna overreact for 6 months til the defense shows improvement?

  27. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

We gave up after the first pick it seems ……and just throwing darts at the damn draft board now…..lol… can’t make this up

  28. Rick Says:

    Need. A. Guard.

  29. gotbbucs Says:

Must be day drinking in that draft room and everybody besides Licht left the room for a piss break

  30. AlphaWest Says:

Kappa and Benenoch must have practiced like All Pros during OTAs… huh?

  31. Bird Says:

They got us in the phone to laugh at us

Jason Licht I cannot support anymore
I can not believe what a beating he took a few years ago to actually think this was smart

  32. Magadude Says:

To his credit, he’s hit every extra point last year, 4-5 from 50+, and I think 30 or 34 FGs? Yeah I know, so did you-know-who. But Licht’s improved no doubt…he only blew of 4th rounder this time!

To be fair, let’s see. Santos did not have range.

  33. JimmyJack Says:

    Bruce on EsLN right now

  34. JimmyJack Says:

    ESPN

  35. Magadude Says:

    He must be Gay.

  36. JabooBuc Says:

Rick, they have their Guard. See picture above

  37. Unimpressed Says:

I bet even this guy himself didn’t think he was getting drafted lol

  38. Elita Vita Says:

5 picks on defense and a kicker. Gotta feel bad for Winston. Winston is in a produce it or lose it year and he has received no upgrades to help him so far. No improvement on the Oline no real improvement at running back. Bucs will be ready to pounce when teams need to get their rosters down to 53 before the season starts.

  39. WhatTheBuc Says:

The guy is a stud athlete. Don’t know if he will be any good but we can’t be afraid to draft a kicker just because Robert was a bust. Drafted kickers are successful at a much higher rate than position players.

  40. AlphaWest Says:

    Maybe they’re working on a blockbuster trade… GMC for a 7th rounder?

  41. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Hold on folks…this guy is so good he doubles as his own long snapper….

  42. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Barry Melrose 2.0 & Gump are definitely tanking for tua but the bucs ARE stil so far away from competing… going into the draft the bucs needed OL, RB, Edge, Slot, bucs hsve drafted none

  43. Magadude Says:

I’m sure there is something else he does. Maybe he’s a PR too.

  44. Durango 95 Says:

Is it too late to have Licht Baker Acted?

  45. Bird Says:

I can’t believe he just did that

I do not support our GM anymore

This kid would not be drafted

  46. SteveK Says:

    My board:

    1. Ed Oliver
    2. Dalton Risner/Greedy Williams
    3. Darrell Henderson
    4. Ok with our pick/ Christian Miller?
    5. Amani O. CB Penn State

  47. MadMax Says:

shouldve been Cole Tracy….but, lets hope he’s great!

  48. 2020 here we come Says:

What the f***!! Are we doin ….

  49. DBAM Says:

You kidding me? GMC for a janitor per J Lite.

  50. JimmyJack Says:

The biggest problem I got is Licht has been trying to fix the kicker for half a decade. He has wiffed every time.

Don’t know who scouted Gay but I sure hope it’s somebody new.

  51. Rod Munch Says:

Frees up $800k on the cap since Santos is gone… so there’s that.

  52. Magadude Says:

Let’s be serious here though. The Bucs have two kickers on the roster now, and they have been practicing without any fans or media presense. There is probably a reason they did this. And yes, we know Santos did okay for the most part but he didn’t have a lot of range. So I’m happy to defer on this.

  53. TB22 Says:

    Licht mailed this draft in.

    What a colossal abomination.

This is on the Glazers though for retaining this loser.

The Bucs will have the #1 overall draft pick for the foreseeable future.

Arians should just quit. I know I would.

  54. Jarhead Says:

All u fake azz fans should jump ship!!

In two years this draft could look like the best in years. A potential stud Inside Linebacker, two man press CB’s with Bunting looking like a potential lockdown, and kicker….yes a kicker who looks accurate from not just inside 35 but deep as well.

    #JumpShip#Trolls

  55. Bird Says:

    Joe

I know you don’t like me and moderate my comments although I am sometimes right. And just busting your nuts

    Ask Licht

“ do you realize that this kid would not have been drafted. When good players on the board why would you draft a kicker “

“Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth “

  56. Blackmagic00 Says:

Wonder how many other GMs chuckled.

  57. Greg Says:

Great! Now when our kicker misses the field-goal 60,000 people will scream AAWW Gay!

  58. Tackleblockwin Says:

Is his place holder still available? We can trade up to get him. 🙂

  59. Rod Munch Says:

What I don’t get about this, is the kid has a HUGE leg, can do kickoffs – and we just gave one of the worst punters in football $2.7m/year because he can handle kickoffs…

Anywho, my confidence in Licht to fix the kicking issue is basically zero, but hopefully I’m wrong. Hopefully…

  60. Bird Says:

    Jarhead

    Terrible movie by the way

I like the draft up until you take a guy that wouldn’t get drafted in he 9th round
You should have played poker before

    Kickers don’t get drafted anymore
John Lynch drafted a punter not knowing round 7 would be his shot

  61. SteveK Says:

    Jarhead,

This draft shouldn’t have shook out this way. If we drafted worth a damn then we wouldn’t need to repeat and neglect the trenches. Fans should be irate. 11 years of irrelevance and we are all of a sudden kk with continuing to draft DBs and Kickers, while not taking any damn linemen? Sheeeeeeeeeeit 💩

  62. Tom S. Says:

JimmyJack, the team can draft another kicker sure. Jason Licht however should never do that. Kyle Brindza, Roberto Aguayo, Nick Folk, Chandler Cantanzaro. The dude literally CANNOT EVALUATE KICKERS. Ive never seen someone be worse at their job that Jason Licht at evaluating a kicker. So let’s have him burn a 5th round pick on one shall we?

It should be noted that when Licht was trading up for Aguayo in Rd 2, Jon Robinson, new GM of the Titans and former “protege” signed Aldrick Rosa’s. Rosa’s would end up becoming the Giants kicker the following year and make the Pro Bowl and 2nd team all Pro in 2018. The Saints would go on to sign Will Lutz who’s made 87% of his FG’s. The Texans would sign Lou Groza winner Ka’imi Fairbairn who has made 85% of his FG’s. Licht not only traded up for a kicker that year he took by far the worst one when the rest were signing as UDFA’s. Which most kickers sign as.

  63. Bird Says:

    Greg

    😂
    They have a pr issue

  64. Boogeyman Says:

Fired ? Licht should be shot (not really) but so many needs and we get a kicker 🤷🏻‍♂️ That’s just Gay !

  65. Ricordo Says:

I’m still waiting for the shoulder-length hair guy. Just for those 90-90 days, 90 degree temperature and 90% humidity.

Hopefully, he uses Juicy Green Apple Shampoo | Suave Essentials®.

  66. Greg Says:

I have sent it before on here. This season is not about being competitive and chasing a Super Bowl ring. This is about saving Jason lights job. He’s trying to win with the players he drafted or paid money to. If we go six and 10 or better Winston and will get a huge contract and we will be done for the next five years.

  67. Blackmagic00 Says:

Oh Jarhead. Problem is, we’ve seen this flick too many times. Only thing I hope for is the media deciding to call this draft a complete and utter failure. May be the only thing that will reverse the history of us winning the off season and completely failing the season.

  68. Dom>Licht Says:

This draft is on Arians …. he must truly believe we are ok at G and RB. We will see how how great of a coach he actually is.

  69. OneBuc55 Says:

    BA obviously ok’ed this pick..

We need to find some consistency at that position too…I can totally understand Lichts obsession with fixing the kicking game…It’s cost him and Jamies alot of W’s since he’s been here…

  70. Shane247 Says:

Every year we blame the previous coaches for these bonehead picks. At some point you have to look at the common denominator and that is Licht. Your GM has to be the guy who applies logic and reasoning to the process. Knowing when to say, we are taking the best players available, If they match a need even better. This makes Licht look like yes man. Just doing the bidding for whomever is coaching. This is a failing philosophy!!!

  71. Shooters Says:

    hes moving to saftey

  72. BucIt Says:

    In the last 5 years
    DE drafted-2
    Kickers-2
    It’s a Bucs life?

  73. JGhoti86 Says:

    Memoirs of a “Gay”sha

  74. Rod Munch Says:

There is no issue at RB, as for G, yeah, I don’t know what they’re doing unless they really think Cappa is the guy. Even so I’d be taking an o-lineman to have them in the pipeline since there is no depth there.

  75. SteveK Says:

6-10 does not equal huge contract for Jameis.

No shot. If anything he gets franchised with a .500 or lower record.

    Winning football gets paid.

We can just try and draft another QB and pay them the rookie wage, while paying proven talent around it. The winning formula- sans tom Brady- bc he takes less for more.

  76. JimmyJack Says:

Tom S. I agree with that. I darn sure hope Licht let’s someone new scout this K.

Remember the ST coach in his interview and was intrigued when he talked about evaluating Matt Bryant.

  77. PIT OF MISERY Says:

Licht thought his last name was Guy…

  78. Rod Munch Says:

Guys, you’re looking at this wrong.

Who is one of the greatest special teams players of all time? That’s right, Detroit returner Mel Gray.

This kid, Matt Gay, has the same initials, and the same number of letters in his name.

    This this a brillant pick!

  79. JimmyJack Says:

Munch we got two Guards that got a lot of experience as depth guys. Our depth at T does look as good but at G is not so bad…….Whose gonna start and be our future there?….that’s the question.

  80. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

Also something else to ponder: Maybe our new ST coach from ATL scouted THIS kicker and not Licht (finally). Its evident Licht had no clue how to evaluate kickers, so maybe a new set of eyes is what we need.

  81. Totally Exonerated Says:

Licht went from getting worse by the year to getting worse by the round.

  82. JabooBuc Says:

Actual Jason Licht quote: “We really liked what he put on tape. He would kick the ball and it would go between those two tall poles. We understand you get points for that which is good. Also, he has a little girth to him and we really need a Guard so there you go!”

  83. BucfaninMi Says:

None of us know Jack $hit right now. BA and Bowles have had input.

  84. Dom>Licht Says:

No issue at RB… Eagles Rams Bills Vikings ALL have a better running back’s and address that position. Licht it’s just going force last year running back bust of a pick on us. When we’re 30th and rushing again and Jamies is turning the ball over Three times a game because he’s having to throw at 60 times let’s hope our kicker can bail us out.

  85. Bird Says:

Anyone that thinks BA is calling the shots is Drunk

    Licht bro
    Licht poo
Licht beer that has no alcohol content

  86. TOM Says:

If this is a joke its on the fans. I noticed Wingo had a hard time keeping a straight face when talking to BA.

  87. Adrian Says:

@ bucfanin ….Yeah your right. Giving a punter pinion 3 m a year then signing santos 2m this year and drafting another kicker. Sure Arians and Todd definitely put in word to draft another one.

  88. Rod Munch Says:

JimmyJack – Yeah, I meant get an offensive lineman in general. I was actually thinking you try to get a swing tackle that can play guard in a pinch just to give depth, but I’d be fine with depth anywhere as in my world I’m cutting Evan Smith ASAP as he was God-awful last year. For those who hate Benenoch, they should really hate Smith as he was so bad he was the cause for Benenoch starting.

  89. SteveK Says:

    BucfaninMi,

I do know that Licht has drafted these same potions, with premium picks, several past drafts and we are still trying to fill the same damn holes.

It’s one thing to strike out like a mofo in FA, but this draft cements that last draft picks by Licht we’re beyond horrible.

Why can’t we draft BPA? Bc we are stuck trying to let the wrong guy scout our talent.

I hope I’m wrong, it as a fan this is tough to stomach. The JBF community could do a better job with the selection process.

  90. stpetebucsfan Says:

Man you guys are funny!!! You are going nuts over a pick that has less than a 1-10 chance of making it…8% according to stats.

It doesn’t matter if it was a guard, tackle, RB he would still have a 90% BUST RATE. That of course would have folks here going nuts about Licht when the guy finally busts. It also why Licht does as well with UDFA’s as 6th or 7th round picks. You get to negotiate with ALL the remaining players and find the HUmps and Brates and Barbers and bring them into camp.

Some good news and bad news. First the good…if any player of value would drop to the 5th it’s as likely to be a kicker as anyone because the rest of the positions are valued more and so totally picked over.

The bad news…folks are excited by the prospect of many of these new picks meaning that other teams will be cutting vets when the rookie pick beats them out at a far cheaper salary.

Problem is we don’t have a ton of money to invest in these FA’s who get cut due to cheaper rookies. Yes there will be a lot of them but how many can we afford?

  91. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Jason the Toad lichter. Please put down the vape pen!

  92. Miketb19 Says:

    Bucs Fans

Let’s remember Bruce Arians is no idiot he’s a hell of a foot ball coach and he has put together a damn good coaching staff let’s let them work. We haven’t even seen this kid kick on practice field yet who are we to say 10 mins after this kid is picked he’s already a failure. Let’s hold out judgement until we see these guys in training camp and pre-season before we jump off the deep end. There have been plenty of 5th round picks to surprise people in the George Kittle and Richard Sherman whose to say this kid doesn’t go out there and kick the crap out of that ball and help win us some games. Let’s give it time guys and see how it plays out

  93. Xavier Says:

I like how Light goes against conventional thinking. This could be a genius pick. I suppose our new coaching staff is enough to bring out the best with what we already have. Most of these picks will either supplement what we already have or elevate our overall talent to get us to the promise land. We shall see

  94. Clean House Says:

Trade the entire franchise for a seventh

  95. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

I wouldn’t want to be in ticket sales at OBP….

  96. Clean House Says:

    Actually,
Joe, PLEASE do a fan poll….
If we were to offer Jason Licht for a seventh, how many teams would bite?

  97. JimmyJack Says:

I think OL is the biggest area that needs better coaching.

All signs point to poor coaching from the last few years. Didn’t develope one player entire time. Multiple players out of position. Guys changing positions with failed results. Rotating RGs.I highly don’t our blocking schemes matched our players best attributes.

Coaching will make a difference and finding good interior lineman is not nearly as difficult as Dork made it look.

  98. JimmyJack Says:

If Gay wins the job and performs we will be a better team and this was a good choice.

  99. BucsDynastyTime Says:

Joe’s… do us all a favor and shut your website down. One Joe is a crybaby little kid over Devin White. The other’s apathy is stupid. First we have a head fan and podcaster who is a child molester, now these bozos blast the Bucs all weekend. Sick of this pathetic site

  100. Jean Lafitte Says:

hahaha ..I kept waiting for the run on kickers after the Bucs in the 5th round

    ……….and nope, didn’t happen

    reach …should’ve been 6-7th round

this pick should have been a RB

  101. Rod Munch Says:

JimmyJack – I don’t foresee how they don’t just hand him the job. This wasn’t a late 5th rounder, this was a high 5th rounder, a place where you can get a LB still, or a quality backup offensive lineman. To skip on that for a kicker means he’s your kicker, period. If he’s any good then it’s a solid pick as most 5th rounders are wastes. If he isn’t any good, or he loses a game or two (something Roberto never did) then he’s a huge bust – not in so much that a 5th rounder didn’t make it, but that Licht whiffed on yet another guy.

In any case whoever was scouting kickers (and corners), I hope those guys from previous years were all fired. But since I didn’t hear about the scouting department being cleaned out I’m guessing that wasn’t the case.

  102. El Buco Realisto Says:

At least now we know which jersey 813broccoli will constantly wear!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!

48hrs until the return of “The Buc Realist” !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  103. Jean Lafitte Says:

    or OL

  104. Adam C Wade Says:

Jason Licht isn’t making these pics people.

  105. JGhoti86 Says:

Kickers and punters going all over the place now. At ease now fellas. You could argue we need a kicker more than most teams. Especially the last 10 years.

  106. stpetebucsfan Says:

Remember BA’s take long ago. Not interested in drafting OL because they take awhile to develop.

This dude is SERIOUS!!! He wants to win THIS YEAR! He already told us all that drafting OL is for the future and anybody drafting them year is getting somebody ready for the next coach because short of the stars like Nelson they take time to develop.

He also told us that he really loved our offensive personnel…amazed at inheriting this much talent…remember he believes in JW. Then he DID admit that the defense needs work.

So we draft all defense and a kicker and after all that BA has already said how can anybody be the least bit surprised.

Remember Maya Angelou’s famous quote? “When someone tells you who they are believe them!” BA told us who he is and what he wanted to change on this team and this draft reflects EVERYTHING he’s already said. Perhaps we should start listening to him.

  107. PIT OF MISERY Says:

    Jaboo Buc: LMAO

  108. kyle Says:

jason always said, life is like a box of chocolates

  109. Joe in Michigan Says:

For the people who say kickers aren’t important…How many games have we lost because of poor kicking? I don’t care if we draft a kicker in the 5th round, as long as he’s a good kicker.

  110. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

They did NOT need to use ANY draft pick to get Gay…….he ABSOLUTELY would have not been drafted….WHY? BECAUSE NO OTHER FREAKING FRANCHISE IS THAT FREADING STUPID !!!!!!

  111. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

    FREAKING STUPID!!!! *****

  112. Dapostman Says:

    For the Aguayo pick haters:

past performance is not indicative of future results

  113. Joe in Michigan Says:

Other teams after us drafted kickers, and we drafted the highest rated one, according to draft outlets. He would’ve been drafted by someone else. New England took a punter. Are they a stupid organization?

  114. Tvan101 Says:

The guys drafted after this kicker hurts, smh.

  115. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Quit yer belly achin’!

A kicker is supposed to be one of the top scorers on the team. We need that, because Santos is going to kill us!

Fifth round is a good time to get the one you want.

This is NOT a repeat of Aguoyo. This is a good move.

  116. Joe in Michigan Says:

Since the NFL has gone to the 7 Round draft in 1994, there have been 45 kickers and 44 punters drafted. It’s a fairly common occurrence. The only team to not draft a kicker or punter in the last 25 years is the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans, if any of you want to switch teams because of who we took in the 5th Round.
    Source: http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?position=SPECIALISTS&type=position
(Note that the 2 kickers drafted this year are not on this list)

  117. Jeffbuc Says:

How can a guy working at one bucs place as a seasons ticket liaison possibly seek tickets after this draft. He has to be dreading Monday like super bowl Monday.i bet there’s a 75% chance of every ticket rep being sick next week

  118. Anonymous Says:

    Worst draft ever..

  119. Buccernutter Says:

Our fan base is so dumb even the media is bad.

Joe, I know you’re not belittling a kicker pick in round 5 with a terrible track record of special teams.

Why do we suck so bad as a fans?
