Devin White: Bruce Arians Told Me He Was Taking Me At No. 5

April 26th, 2019

Powerful shotcaller

If there was any question about who was calling the No. 5 overall pick at One Buc Palace, there shouldn’t have been. Bucco Bruce Arians is calling the shots.

But Devin White made that even more clear last night.

The Bucs’ new inside linebacker drafted No. 5 overall jumped on SiriusXM NFL Radio after getting picked by Tampa Bay last night and explained how he knew he was coming to the Bucs if possible.

White shared his experience during his predraft meeting to One Buc Palace.

“Every meeting that I had was very lengthy, and it was very heartfelt, and I knew it was genuine,” White said. “And when I got in there with Coach Bruce, he told me, ‘Devin, if you’re on the board at No. 5, I’m taking you. You know, you show us everything that we believe in.'”

White went on to say Arians talked about how Team Glazer likes to give back to children in the community and White says he’s the same way.

The newest Buccaneer also said he texted with America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, a few weeks ago. White didn’t reveal what he texted, but he said it was about coming to the Bucs because “I just knew.”

Joe can’t wait to see who Arians picks in about eight hours.

Oh the chaos when the wheels fall off mid-season. Major changes coming again next offseason.

  2. Joeypoppems Says:

I love the fit of Devin White with the Bucs… I dont like how everybody and their mother knew this would happen for months.

  3. Joeypoppems Says:

As far as tonight goes, Cody Ford is my #1 player Im hoping they take. His G/T versatility makes him a plug and play starter on the OL. And if Cappa wins the RG spot Ford can replace Dotson.

  4. SCBucsFan Says:

Joey initial mocks has us with Greedy who is still on the board!

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This is why Arians is a great coach……he shows extreme confidence in his players…..he has lifted up Jameis…..LVD, JPP, Evans, Godwin, OJ…..and many others….
Devin White is totally fired up to be a Buc….and that shows all over him….

Part of me wants us to bring in his teammate, Greedy…..

Round 2 needs to be a CB or Oline……

  6. Lord Cornelius Says:

I really am the craziest homer. I have basically fallen in love with this pick this morning somehow over coffee lmao.

My wife & I love New Orleans and Horses

    LETS GO BABY

  7. Buchead407 Says:

    Trade up for greedy

  8. Kobe Faker Says:

“BA is straight forward no nonesense, strict conservative leader, but those qualities dont work well with GM/francise building/ future thinking person

Bring in GM Chris Ballard top assistant from Indy”

  9. Dirks Great Granpappy Says:

Cheers to good health for all of our Bucs new and old through training camp
And to all of you on this site along with your families as well

Hoping ol with our second rd pick. Ford or one of the miss st guys. With so many options I just hope they find a stud for the right side

  10. Joeypoppems Says:

    @SC

Greedy would also be a great pick. I just think RG is a glaring hole, plus if BA really believes VH3 and Davis are the starters then taking Greedy doesnt make sense because he isnt a slot CB.

    Imo Greedy makes sense tho.

  11. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Lord Corn has horses?

Shaman Faker knew LC had money!

No women in her right mind would marry a pathetic Bucsfan who doesnt have money!”

  12. Joeypoppems Says:

Dre’mont Jones is another guy I wouldnt mind seeing picked at 39. If they are trying to find an heir apparent to GMC. Round 3 guys like Khalen Saunders and Renel Wren might be better value tho.

  13. NOSBOS Says:

Glad to see you’ve come around to the young man Lord. Pop BA did say you can’t have too many. Greedy is starting to ring in my ear man.

  14. GhostofSchiano Says:

White was not my first choice but to be fair I will wait until he plays a few games before commenting further.

  15. GhostofSchiano Says:

    Not a sheep

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Better to ride horses than Uber……(had to put that out there)…..

  17. SOEbuc Says:

TBbucfan…Agreed. CB or OL and there’s still a lot of good potential at both those positions heading early into the second. Ford or Greedy would be kick a$$.

  18. Pickgrin Says:

Greedy, Taylor, Ford or Risner at #39

One or two of those 4 should be available.

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We need to replace money with these next picks…….Jensen, Dotson….perhaps GMC or JPP (doubtful) or maybe even VH3 if he doesn’t perform.

In this round RB, WR, LB, S, QB, TE don’t make sense……or Kicker.

  20. Jackwagon Says:

    Hear ye, hear ye…Buc faithful!!

When Arizona takes CB Byron Murphy at the top of Round Two tonight, we should give them our #39 pick in the Second Round for….PATRICK PETERSON.

BAM!! How SMART would that be!!

Plus Pwterson us already fighting with Cardinals management. Plenty of ways by start of season to work out the salary cap implications…cuts, changes, and restructures will be coming anyway.

  21. Jackwagon Says:

Completely fits BA’s reload montra too…

  22. DBS Says:

I told you this last night. It is back to Lap Dog Licht. So don’t be blaming him for personnel decisions. He will do as told. Only way he can try to save his job and hope it works.

  23. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @kobe

lmfao unfortunately I have no horses but want some with some CO mountain property one day

My wife actually met me when my band was playing a show in Destin. She had said she’d never date a football fan and now her life is all sorts of F’d by this team lol.

I wanted Allen or Oliver but it is what it is. You were super high on White at 5 early in the process so let’s just re-embrace that lol

  24. Lord Cornelius Says:

The beauty of the 3-4 is that there is more depth at 3-4 OLB/DE type players than there are 4-3 DEs:

I think we could easily take OL or Dremont Jones (DT) in R2, and then get one of these guys in R3:

    Chase Winovich 6’3 253 lbs 4.59 40

Jachai Polite 6’3 258 lbs 4.84 40 but great production although character concerns are always legit. He may be off our board but we met with him and I trust BA on that sh1t.

D’Andre Walker – 6’2 251 lbs not sure of testing

    Oshane Ximines – 6’3 253 lbs 4.78 40 / 34″ vert

    Ben Banogu – 6’3 250 lbs 4.62 40 / 40″ vert

But we will probalby take like a S & RB and p1ss off the entire fan base

  25. CaptRedBeard Says:

Would love to see Cody Ford or Risner in the 2nd, and Khalen Saunders in the 3rd. Late round, or as an udfa, rb Devine Ozigbo would be sweet.

  26. cmurda Says:

I’m not going to lie. I was a bit butt-hurt because I wanted Josh since he was available. However, I’m also a Devin White fan and this could have been much worse. It does show that Arians means what he says. He already has the resume to earn respect but he continues to build trust with this team. I’m excited and I’m glad that all the “experts” are pinning us with no more than 7 wins. It will be all that much sweeter when we exceed expectations for a change.

  27. cmurda Says:

@Redbeard. I’m hoping for Jawaan Taylor in the 2nd rd. Unless there is something I don’t know since I expected Taylor to be off the board.

  28. Joeypoppems Says:

    @NOSBOS

That is true. Keep Rock Ya-Sin in mind as well. BA has ties to Temple. He could be in play if CB is the pick

  29. stpetebucsfan Says:

@TBBF OK that was funny. Poor JW…I don’t think Uber jokes will ever die among Buc fans. Not like he doesn’t deserve for a mistake that egregious and stupid. I certainly forgive him…and root for him…but forgive him completely? Nah.

@Joe Agree totally with the thrust of your piece. However I would like to include and addendum about BA’s status here in Tampa. Drafting is generally a collaborative effort but you make a valid point…the Buck needs to stop somewhere and that’s BA.

However I view BA as an artist not a dictator. There is a word that describes BA very well. Auteur!

An auteur (/oʊˈtɜːr/; French: [otœʁ], lit. ‘author’) is an artist, usually a film director, who applies a highly centralized and subjective control to many aspects of a collaborative creative work; in other words, a person equivalent to an author of a novel or a play.

BA is the auteur who applies HIS highly centralized and subjective control to the Buc’s personnel decisions. Having said that I believe that he took both Licht and Bowles advice VERY seriously and perhaps took advice from other trusted people in and out of the Buc’s organizations.

  30. SOEbuc Says:

Blow me some smoke BA. Get beastly Lonnie Johnson (Bowels likes the big CB) in the second and not have VH3 trying to go up against Julio and Thomas.

  31. Kobe Faker Says:

    “LC

    Allen is a generational player

Right now DW is perfect for the Bucs. He is a leader and key to Bowles successful rebuild of the defense

    im happy we have DW

like you I believe today is the key day for this 2019 season

we need no less than 2 startes picked tonight

    i prefer OG and corner

dline and runningback is the other holes

we have 4 holes…if we can get 3 starters in the draft and fill the rest with FA vets…

    we can actually think playoffs”

  33. Kobe Faker Says:

    “TT,

Marrying a Bucsfan is a leading cause of divorce”

  34. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @TampaTown

Correct sir! Confucius say…”Man who marry for money earn every penny!”

  35. Isaac haggins Says:

And Licht says last night , draft gurus didn’t know what we were doing , nothing has come from our building !!! Jason once again it just shows the level of carelessness and complete lack of understanding and professional integrity and savontness that it takes to be the best !!! See folks this isn’t a let’s operate and make a living business it’s a 32 business competition to see who’s the best !!! Only one goal every year , To Be The Best and You have to be elite at all GM angles and Licht s savior coach is the source of every GM and draft analyst knowing what the Bucs were doing !!! Licht truly is in La La land as is Arians with the draft !!!

The Glazers are the culprits and it’s just sloppy from top to bottom !!! Licht is such a stumble bum it’s unreal how sloppy his crew is and yes he’s supposed to be in charge !!! What a Joke !!! Hell he and Bruce can’t only not lie good they can’t even lie at all !!! This is so unbelievable but totally predictable!!!

  36. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @Kobe

agree. Give me 2 starters at any of these positions and that’s acceptable. If we can trade back / maneuver to get 3 then that’s even better:

    OG
    DT
    Edge
    CB
    S

Get a RB with hands/route running in R4-R6 range

  37. Kobe Faker Says:

“Tonight will decide the fate of the 2019 season!!!

3 starters , no backups specialty players

Hopefully we can get a 4th for GMC to package picks to tradeup backup to the 3rd

    OG, CORNER, RB (David Montgomery)

Give Kobe A dual threat workhorse RB and 16 games from OJ…

    We make the playoffs!!!”

    Shaman Faker

  38. Snook Says:

We’ve needed a leader on defense for many years. McCoy has never been. Neither was Kwon or David.

We need a Kuechly type prescence in the middle of the D. Hopefully White is that guy. He’s definitely talented.

Good thing no one took “inside linebacker” Luke Kuechly in the top 5 in 2012. What a disaster that would’ve been.

  39. Arian Nation Says:

I like that BA took charge of the pick and never waivered. I believe he knows more about football than all of us.

He gave DW his word and stuck to it. White said he wouldn’t fall past #5. Last yea Derwin James said he wouldn’t drop farther than the Bucs. Looks like someone lied to him.

  40. JL Says:

Arian Nation, that’s one creepy pic! JP had a secret, do you?

  41. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Thank You Jesus that Bruce Arians is making the final decisions on who we draft.
