Bruce Arians Has A Message For Fans Who Say The Bucs Need(ed) A Pass Rusher

April 26th, 2019

“Pay attention, doubters.”

The newest Buccaneer, Devin White, was introduced to local media today alongside shotcaller head coach Bucco Bruce Arians and general manager Jason Licht.

White is an impressive guy. It’s never a good idea to fall in love with the interview on any player, but it could be easy to do with White.

Of course, Arians is a smooth, warm talker himself.

Asked about White the football player, Arians said, “the tape speaks for itself.” And Arians acknowledged that he hears those who say the Bucs need or needed a pass rusher.

For those chirping voices, Arians said White can rush the passer, he’ll blitz up the gut of the defensive line, and quarterbacks don’t like that kind of pressure.

Bring on “the green dogs!”

    Let’s go.

  2. Not there yet Says:

Yea uh that’s not a message for fans that is clearly a message for the joe that has been complaining for the last two weeks

  3. Slugglife Says:

He was a maniac in his highlight video. No doubt he’s got what we need.

  4. Pepsi Says:

Well one issue with this is we are also apparently losing McCoy. Pressure with blitzing LBs can make your vulnerable unless they’re flying in untouched and todo that it helps if your Interior Dlineman are real disruptive

  5. Miketb19 Says:

This is why I think Joe blew this pick a lil out of proportion if you watch Devin Whites tape he definitely can blitz very good up the middle and so Lavonte David. Todd B will be taking turns with those guys on his Blitzes and nobody in this league blitzes more than him so it would no surprise me if both guys end up with 5 or 6 sacks each over the course of next season. Combine that with JPP and a healthy Vita Vea I think will really surprise some people

Round 2: Cody Ford OG Oklahoma
Round 3: Jachai Polite Edge Florida

If we get these 2 tonight I will consider this draft a huge success

  6. Shooters Says:

How often does a ILB blitz? on the high side once every 3 downs. how often does an edge rusher? EVERY DOWN!!!!! thats why ILB do not lead the league in sacks, pressures, etc. I like White as a player just thought edge was more important.

  7. Dan McLaughlin Says:

Keeping GMC to blow up that line. White gets through easily

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

White can not only rush the passer….he can cover…….he is faster than another LSU standout……Odell Beckham Jr.

For all the naysayers…..go to the videotape…..he can run down any offensive player….sideline to sideline from the middle of the field….

And….it seems he is his fastest at the point of contact…….this guy is a beast.

  9. tnew Says:

Plus… who led the NFL in pressures per drop back according to PFF…. that would be the Bucs.

Who was rated as the #2 pass rusher in the NCAA??

    Devin White

  10. JGhoti86 Says:

    GEAUX BUCS! That’s all

  11. tnew Says:

His timing on delayed blitz is truly next level. Couple that with his twitch and burst. Then there is the power if a back tries to block him. He and LVD will truly be a handful.

  12. Sport Says:

This is clearly ‘Level Headed Joe’, nice work.

This is going to be fun. Hardy used to take over games from the LB position and was a beast of a leader, IMO, he was the first puzzle piece that provided the Bucs with the identity of Defense in Tampa Bay!

We have been lacking an identity since the band broke up after the Super Bowl win.

  13. Bird Says:

    Watch the press conference.

    Genuine kid

Hope he is the franchise player that we are expecting

  14. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete (formerly known as 'The Kwon Alexander of Bucs Fans) Says:

    Tnew for the Win!

  15. Rod Munch Says:

    Look at this line…

    145 tackles, 7 sacks, 21 TFL, 13 QB hits, 5 INTs…

Those are the numbers on David when he last played in an attacking defense. The team has an amazing pass rusher who has been told to sit in coverage. Let David rush off the edge and you got your pass rusher.

  16. Defense Rules Says:

TBBF & tnew … Please don’t start throwing FACTS into the discussion. You’ll only confuse the anti-White groupies. I mean didn’t you know that ILBs blitz once every 3 downs, but DEs blitz every down? (Sorry Shooter, but BOTH of those stats were just made up … there are these little thingies called ‘coverage’ & ‘playing the run’ that enter into the equation).

  17. jabuc Says:

White is blue chip stud. According to walterfootball the Steelers tried to move to #3 to take White ahead of the Bucs.

  18. #1bucsfan Says:

Y’all we have WHITE an LVD patrolling the middle so excited I mean super duper excited. Throwing it out there now we are making the playoffs this year haha one can wish still

  19. jabuc Says:

If you haven’t go watch Devin White’s pro day…all I can say is WOW! dude is freaky crazy fast

  20. Jean Lafitte Says:

even so, it would still be nice to grab J. Ferguson

  21. Magadude Says:

Yeah, what many of us have been saying…

  22. Jerid421 Says:

History will show that this was a HORRIBLE REACH of a PICK!!! He is a very RAW talent. He was a running back just 3 years ago. He tackles high ALL the time, whiffs a lot, and has average instincts which don’t help to mask the fact that he is very often out of position or has taken a very bad angle. This guy is a freak athlete, is super-fast, and has lots of ceiling, but his floor is also very low. He is what busts are MADE OF!!! This is not what you take at F&*king #5. You take sure-thing home runs at 5 or you trade down.

The Trade Chart shows the #5 pick as being worth 1700 points and assuming just a straight point-for-point trade (not gouging someone for a premium, which happens more times than not in trades), we could have garnered through a few trades the #36 (540 pts), #37 (530 pts), #53 (370 pts) and #57 (330 pts) picks. And that equates to actual personnel (including the #38 that we already hold):

    * D.K. Metcalf – WR
    * Greedy Williams – CB
    * Dalton Risner – OL
    * Drew Lock – QB
    * David Montgomery – RB

Now you tell me, who would you rather have? An Inside Linebacker with elite speed and whoever they pick today or those (5) guys? Call me arm-chair GM, but this s*&t ain’t rocket surgery.

  23. SOEbuc Says:

    #1bucsfan

No doubt. How the hell are Joe and these anti-Whites not realizing this guy is going to be playing next to LVD on the inside. Holy sh!t!!! If White is what they say he is, that’s possibly two leaders of the defense smack dab in the middle of the field communicating with everyone.

  24. Slugglife Says:

    TBBF

And he tackles with violent intentions.

  25. Red86 Says:

318 in the building!!! Springhill Lumberjacks!! Rep the Northwest Louisiana well Devin White like McFarlane!

    Welcome to the Bucs!

I was confused at first with the pick, but in Licht and Vea interview they mentioned 34 base defense. Linebackers are much more important than defensive line in that base defense. Dude is lightning quick til it ridiculous.

  26. Rod Munch Says:

    Jerid421 – LOL!

  27. Slugglife Says:

They can be anti-DW m, but it doesn’t change the fact that he is now going to be a starting LB for your Bucs. And he will be an immediate impact player. Some people have nothing better to do than btch.

Welcome the guy and wish him well. Move on man.

  28. Slugglife Says:

Yeah Jerid- he’s got bust written all over him. Uh huh.
    What are tonight’s lotto numbers?

  29. Shooters Says:

anyone who thinks an ILB rushes the passer as often as a DE needs to stop watching football. Maybe reading an entire post would be prudent, I said I like White as a player. My opinion is we passed on several edges that are extremely hard to find. I hope white is a pro bowl player for us.

  30. catcard202 Says:

Premium positional talent matters…QB / Edge / CB / WR / LT / DT…ILB is a devalued position in modern NFL schemes. No longer due you need a lumix 255lb run stuffer…You need speed & you can get that in spades by playing smaller ILB’s.

If you are trying to weigh LEADERSHIP as a determining factor elevating a marginal position into the top 5…Do so at your own risk.
(not too many 21yr old are ready to come in & hold grown ass men accountable…If the Coach & Organization hasn’t done so 1st!)… IMO, If you feel like your missing Leadership…That an indictment on the FO – they the ones that screwed the roster up to begin with!

Talking heads have been clamoring Bucs biggest NEED was finding Kwon’s replacement since FA… White does that…Great…But at what cost in the long run? JPP aint getting any younger, Barrett’s on a 1yr show me & Spence has yet to prove ANYTHING, yet.

If Allen / Sweat / Burns blow up the league, displaying double digit sack production… & the Bucs are picking in the top10 again next year…I doubt Licht is pulling the trigger & making the calls from One Buc Place.

The best organizations stick to a model that collects as many premium positional players as they can & let the roster sort itself out from there. If you draft to back fill FA loses…You get fired.

Track record matters…Frankly, Jason’s is getting pretty damn shady. It’s smattered with some success, but has an abundance of blunders. I sure hope this one works out, but I ain’t holding my breath.

    catcard202 Says:

    Well Said

  32. DanBucsfan Says:

How can any Bucs fan not be excited about Devin White? After watching every interview he has I get more and more excited about him. He really seems like a better person than football player, and he is a damn good player. Could be great.

  33. catcard202 Says:

As the #5 pick… He better be one hell of a MLB…That’s all I’m saying.

  34. Not there yet Says:

Wow really just because people are listing these guys as top pass rushers…. if they come in and get double digit sacks really? It sounds so easy to all the madden fans out there. I think von Miller had a little bit to do with the sack production of Chubb last year. Very few walk into league and put up big sack production on the strength of their own play as rookies. Same kind of talk was out there about clowney. Stop putting guys in the hall of fame based on position. This guy Dee Ford joe always talks about is 28 and had double digit sacks 2-3 times and one just happen to be last year, he had three as a rookie. Root for another team if you don’t like the pick. There are pass rushers left and someone is always better than they were projected to be.

  35. catcard202 Says:

Pairing a top Edge OLB (Allen / Sweat / Burns) with Barrett, Vea, JPP & Nassib in the Bucs new hybrid 3-4, looked pretty damn formidable on paper….Considering the ILB options that everyone & their brother knew would be setting on the board in rounds 3/4.

  36. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Real simple. White is going to be a perennial pro bowler. Allen? The next Dante Fowler.
    Drop the mic!

  37. Bucsalltheway Says:

Edge is hit or miss we’re in a good place.

  38. BucEmUp Says:

Thats something Mike Smith liked to have our lbs do NEVER!!!!!!!

  39. catcard202 Says:

Fowler isn’t half the player he thinks he is…Let alone = to Josh Allen.

The FLOOR on Allen is Bud Dupree…The ceiling is K.Mack/V.Miller w/ better coverage skills.

  40. Buc4evr Says:

Until I see it I don’t believe a word any Bucs coach says. We haven’t done a thing to improve the trench’s in this draft so far, if ever… the Bucs coach’s, gm and owners have zero credibility.

  41. louden Says:

    @jerid421

    PREACH ON MY FRIEND

i think you areexactly right with the first part about White..

Bucs could have had an excellent EdgeRusher/DE which is premium in the NFL as is DT ..

so many great ones and an potential LT (watch thr Bengals rookie)..

    but this arethe Suckaneers..
