New Bucs rookie cornerback Sean Bunting
The Tuesday words of Bucco Bruce Arians are ringing through Joe’s head right now like a loud alarm clock after a hangover.
You remember when Arians cut off Sage JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman a few days ago.
Ira asked him about the draft and Arians declared the following:
“You can’t draft for need; you draft for need, you get fired,” Arians said cutting Ira off. “You draft the best players. If you got two of them, now you’ve got three of them. Just take the best players that are available for you. Now if you’ve got four players right there together and one of them is a need, that’s the home run.”
And here we are; the Bucs selected speedster press cornerback Sean Bunting out of Central Michigan at No. 39 overall.
Forget that it was a bit of a surprising move because he wasn’t exactly a hot name. That’s not a big deal. But Joe is really considering Arians’ words to Ira tonight. Was Bunting really the best available player? As in the Bucs didn’t make this pick out of need?
Time will tell, as it always does with the draft. But Joe strongly suspects this pick was more about need than the Bucs would ever admit publicly.
If Bunting indeed was the best available player with all that talent left on the board, especially along the offensive line, then someone at One Buc Palace should earn a hearty raise.

Don’t have a problem with the player picked but think they could have move down and got him. No guarantees but other similar player would be available later if someone else grabbed this kid.

Two teams moved up and got an OT ahead of us. Both were trades with Gruden. I am fine with the first round pick, but skeptical here.

How can you pretend to know that this is a bad pick? We need help at corner, he may just be what the doctor ordered after years of soft corner play. CMU has produced some good pros….gotta trust the new regime here…Lets get OL help now….

Licht reaches on players in the 2nd round every year. If he misses again this year he’s lost my faith. It’s one thing to miss late round picks, but the 2nd round is a premium pick that needs to hit at least 50% of the time.

We were planning on drafting the big Tackle from Florida, or Ford the Oklahoma Tackle.

Crap shoot but that’s the only problem I have with the pick. We’ve drafted big names no names and kickers in the second round. No Luck! Sometimes I wish safe was the word of the day just for one draft.

So basically licht decided that we are gonna roll with the safeties we got and that same defensive line that couldn’t get off the field minus Geraldine? There’s no reason to continue wasting late round picks to try and replace late round picks that aren’t playing well right that’s just not logical. I just can’t see how licht gets a second contract unless this corner is a day one starter and a stud.

This guy tries to hard to be the hero. I don’t need you to find every hidden gem, I need you to draft the best, nastiest, most impactful player on the board every time it’s your turn to pick.
Two years ago the draft was super deep at running back and we came away with nothing! You could even argue that snoop mcplaybook was worse than nothing because he took reps away from someone else who may have been able to contribute. Then last year we wind up having to reach on Ronald Jones, who sucks.
Now this year, the draft is chock full of d-line talent and get nothing. Again.
This guy is a dork. He literally traded up in the second round for a kicker.
How in the world does he still have a job?!?!

So, everyone on this board said we need needed another CB on this team prior to the draft. Jason drafts a tall fast CB and now everyone has a problem with the pick? Just because some of you don’t follow college football and haven’t heard of some of these kids doesn’t mean they can’t play.
He put up good film and had a great combine. It’s more than likely a good pick. I just think he could have added some additional picks and still picked him up.

Bunting was rated the 35th best CB in the draft, probably a fifth or six rounder. So he wasn’t even the best available CB much less the best available player. The Bucs talk out of both sides of their mouths and tell lies to fit the situation. They are simply dishonest and continually lie to their fans.

Funny how these people who don’t know their butt from their elbow don’t like the pick. This guy was a top 4 corner on many boards. He was also mocked to us in this spot by a bunch of draftniks. Also like to point out how “BucBeliever” is one of the most negative posters on this site. Change your name bro. This guy is a stud. 9 picks in basically 2 seasons. 4.4 speed and a 41.5 vert. Pete Mitchell: Not sure what any of what you just said has to do with Sean Bunting? I would agree with you that there have been misses in the draft. Was not a fan of the Cappa or Stewart pick last year.
Jury is out on RoJo and injuries have certainly hurt picks like VH3, Beckwith and OJ. So, i get where you are coming from. End of the day, this team has to win and we all want that.
However, my point was people are crying over this pick and not sure why. It’s simply not a bad pick. This is not a reach like Stewart or Cappa.

So your starting QB was selected by whom? Have you totally given up on JW. He’s the most important pick.
How about Licht’s 4th rounder cashing in with SF…or UDFA HUMP cashing in with the Titans. If they were so awful…they are not only not out of the league but valued highly by other teams.
40% of our starting OL drafted by Licht and both just signed mega deals…again hardly out of the league.
UDFA Peyton Barber is our starting RB. ME13 is one of the top WR’s in the entire league…Godwin stolen in the 3rd round…OJ if healthy on his way to being one of the very best in the league not ‘out of the league” 3/4th’s of our starting O lineup have been selected by Licht!
As far as this CB pick I agree with DeweySelmon…this is not Licht’s sole responsibility…if ANY responsibility…BA and Bowles made or totally signed off on this pick.
Man I’d like to smoke some of the stuff you guys are hitting…then again perhaps not if it makes you that much of a hater. Where is all this coming from? Bad records? Those exist for a variety of reasons…such as coaching and horrid wastes of money on FA’s…and Buc tradition. Drafting is the one thing we’ve done pretty well….IF JW is the player most or at least many of us believe he is.

It’s funny reading these commits. I wonder how many “bandwagon” fans said the same thing about trading up for a OT out of “where” in Ali Marpet. Maybe we wait to see what this kid can do. A lot of big names get drafted high & that’s all they ever wanted, to be drafted. He looks hungry, looked good on clips (like every player does in highlighted) lets watch him play. At least we didn’t trade a 1st, 3rd & 5th to move up & draft a player then trade him away for the 62nd pick the following year, Arizona. Things could be worse, we could be Card fans. Go Bucs!

We drafted four DBs in rounds 1 & 2 in the last three years. There’s only 4 db’s on the field in your base defense… why is the defensive secondary still a weakness???
Because Licht drafts guys that no one else would draft as high as he does.
I’m pretty sure Adams had more picks in a handful of games last year than all of Jason Lichts secondary picks over the past three years combined. And the only reason he was on the team was because of injury.
Hopefully it was the coaching. Hopefully all of these guys turn it around. I would love for the Bucs to be successful and be celebrating Jason Licht next January. But I’m not holding my breath.

Old time buc, The fact that you don’t know who this guy is, is a you problem. There isn’t a single draftnik that doesn’t know Sean Bunting. He’s a top prospect and almost every GM had him in for a top 30 visit. Very few players garnered so much attention. Let’s see what the guy can do before making judgements.

I just feel like an idiot I bought season tickets for the first time in a couple of years and it appears the Den of Depression is going to hold true I guess we are going to play a 1-2-8 and just have a bunch of people chasing in pass coverage, heck we may change the NFL back to a run first league when they play the Bucs.
