Strong Bargains Left

March 14th, 2019

Shopping for discounts.

Alright, the Bucs cleared some cap room yesterday when they let some (though not all) dead weight go, which included defensive lineman Mitch Unrein (who?).

Joe was browsing a list compiled by Andy Benoit of SI.com of the best free agents left and quality buys are still on the shelf.

As Joe predicted, it would be a buyer’s market for safeties. There are still many out there. One that caught Joe’s eye is Tre Boston. While he may not be Sean Taylor, Benoit writes that Boston, who will turn 27 this summer, isn’t worthless.

He fills the alley well in run support and can make the occasional play on the ball. He won’t change your secondary, but certainly won’t hinder it either.

Another name to watch is George Iloka, formerly of the Bengals and Vikings.

At corner, Morris Claiborne, a former Todd Bowles player, is still looking for work. And former Bucs corner Rashaan Melvin is out there, too.

At running back, would you be OK with Jay Ajayi? Yeah, he’s coming off knee surgery so he should be cheap. Sadly, that’s all the Bucs can afford right now.

    Wow

Just when you thought things couldn’t be any sadder…..

    Damn, Joe.

  2. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

Clutch pic per usual, Joe. Pickings are Slim and None…with Slim rumored to be signed by the upstart Browns.

  3. Inaros Says:

No question that nighttime posting Joe turns off the salary cap in his Madden franchise.

  4. Mike Says:

Jay Ajayj would instantly be our best back

    Eric Berry

  6. FlBoy84 Says:

Multiple guys still available that could help at various positions, and the price only drops for them as free agency continues. Like Boston, Iloka, Sendejo, Addae or Geathers as a S addition at the right price. Don’t think any of them are going to break the bank. Also like Breeland, Verrett, Melvin or Claiborne as a vet CB addition as well.

  7. tmaxcon Says:

Settling for “isn’t worthless” is what bucfan and glazers do best…. settling will keep basement title streak intact while also giving low standard bucfan some time to come up with new laughable excuses to justify and accept failure once again. After all justifying failure and accepting losing is what being a bucfan is all about.

  8. Tattoodonny Says:

What about Justin Houston, Zach Brown, Eric Berry, Ziggy Ansah, Clay Matthews, KJ Wright, Jameis buddy Ronald Darby, Markus Golden, Marcus Hunt? The cupboard isn’t (Mark) Barron. We’ll get players that we won’t have to replace next year bc they gave some guy like the Giants did to Olivia Vernon $85m just bc he’s available. Keep looking Jason, you’ll find talent looking for a job. Go Bucs!

  9. Not there yet Says:

Ajayi is washed up and we can find a better back in the draft easily and there’s a ton of them. If the Bucs go after a safety then I can officially say licht has been a screw in the draft and no clue how to build a team. Hoping BA doesn’t let him screw it up three years in a row

  10. Deez Bucs Says:

    Justin Houston. Do it.

  11. topcoach78 Says:

    I’ll take Morris Claiborne asap!

  12. adam from ny Says:

joe – is that joel glazer in the picture accompanying this thread?

    i didn’t know he scored b*tches like that !

  13. Waterboy Says:

Still can’t believe they couldn’t lure Tevin Coleman in with something more than the 5 million a yr. contract that he signed. Ajayi is good when he’s healthy but unfortunately he’s injured too often.

  14. Waterboy Says:

Eric Berry hasn’t played but 3 games in the past 2 years and had an achilles injury last season.

  15. ElioT Says:

    Brilliant article Joes!

You guys either crush it or look like complete d-bags with your journalism; no in between.

Yeah poke fun at Mitch Unrein for probably having to retire due to massive head trauma.

When are you going to single out Beau Allen? …i’ll Wait and I don’t give a crap about whatever edits you apply to this post.

Meanwhile y’all glorify Gerald McCoy like he’s a saint, and justify the exodus of Kwon because he’s been the “leader” of the world’s worst defense humans habe ever seen, all the while it’s been the worlds richest loser, with his hands on his hips, letting HIS defense give up the a**.

Not to say Unrein could or would have changed anything, but I guarantee he has more stones than the Joes and McCoy combined.

Mitch “who”? – Say it to his face.

you have to understand a there is no such thing as journalism anymore and joe is scared to death of cancer93 and has never posted a single objective article when it comes to cancer93. just to way it is at one buc… kiss the doll playing boy’s arse or get left out in the cold… all the years i have been here joe has not once been objective when it comes to his favorite career losers.

  18. Guzzie Says:

How does Licht still have a job, all his free agent big splashes suck, every last one, OJ, Evans and maybe Marpet are the only really good players he’s drafted, most are busted already, he over pays guys clearly declining, VJax, Doug, Grimes, Brate (like 30 catches last year), he’s on his 3rd coach, he gets credit for Hump n Brate as UDFAs, what about the drafted guys, he literally has no idea what he is doing

  19. adam from ny Says:

yeah but is that one of the glazer boys in the pic with the hot bodied chica?

  20. isrBuc Says:

    Rebuild.
5 years, trade everything with value. Turd 4 round picks to 3 round and 3rd to second. Keep trading till you pick the right QB. Then hit the market hard.
That’s the way to do it. BA is no magician and there is so much his mouth can do.
There is no “reload”. We hit the bottom. 5-11 and broke. Trade everyone and rebuild. No way around it.

  21. isrBuc Says:

  23. Defense Rules Says:

Joe, forget Jay Ajayi. We need a RB to complement Barber with some durability; that’s NOT Ajayi. He’s meh as a receiving back & had only ONE good year (like Doug Martin?) back in 2016 with Miami & that’s it. Pass. In other RB news (guys you’ve written on in recent weeks?) …

o RB Mark Ingram – Agreed to terms on 3-year, $15 mil deal with Ravens.
o RB Latavius Murray – Expected to sign 4-year, $14.4 mil deal with Saints.
o RB Tevin Coleman – Signed 2-year, $10 million deal with the 49ers.
o RB Le’Veon Bell – Expected to sign 4-year, $52.5 mil deal with Jets.

Read elsewhere that the Browns are still shopping Duke Johnson (still like him as a complement to Barber) and that the Vikings are shopping Xavier Rhodes (Bucs desperately NEED a veteran CB). Rhodes base salary is $10.4 mil a year but he’s a big $13.5 mil Cap hit on the Vikes (with over $7 mil of dead money also). Vikings are hurting for Cap space too after signing Cousins. There’s 2 trades to be made Jason … go for it.

  24. John Says:

Duke johnson, Morris Claiborne, rashaan Melvin and George iloka

  25. Bird Says:

Tre Boston is true free safety. Figured he would be instant player here with knowing arians. Let Whitehead and Evans play strong

Morris Claiborne. Figured he would be here too with Todd Bowles connection. Get it done

    They are both upgrades

And agree on Unrein. What a cheap shot joes. Classless. Not surprised though. Some people are off limits while most aren’t for you guys. He had concussion for entire season and still can’t pass a physical this year. Most likely TBI . The dude won’t even know his name in a few years. Guys are shooting themselves in the stomach (suicide) so their brains can be studied.

  26. Bucsfanman Says:

    Boy, somebody touched a nerve!
I agree with tmax that we need to stop settling for mediocrity. Part of the problem though, is that we spent big money on FAs like Unrein that we never should’ve touched in the 1st place. The combined salary of Gholston, Unrein, Allen, and Curry all could’ve gone to ONE impact player. Now, we’re scraping the barrel again.

  27. Armybucfan Says:

Some fans wonder why we are the bottom feeders of the NFC for the past decade, well this years free agency answered it. We failed to trim the fat, we decided to keep over paid and under performing players and replace them with difference makers. We needed an all star running back not a bargain. The bucs should change their name to the “thrift shop pirates”. The only significant free agent we have picked up was JPP. I hope I’m wrong but I still don’t believe we are going to break the .500 mark this year. Especially with teams like the Brownswho just transformed into a powerhouse; no more jokes about taking the browns to the super Bowl meaning the toilet.

Let’s go “thrift shop pirates” ….oh wait….why does this mascot smell like R.Kelly’s sheet?

  28. Bird Says:

    joeshypocrisy.com

So jameis gets this mysterious shoulder injury last year. Yet nothing shows on mri and gets cleared to play. And it’s his throwing shoulder and he is the franchise Qb so pretty sure they would be very cautious with this type of injury. And he plays. Every week. Staff says he is fine. Yet we get to here a few articles everyday just how it’s affecting his play. Must be serious injury. And that’s the reason for his losses and turnovers.

Mitch Unrein has a serious head injury for an entire season and can’t pass a physical the following season . Probably has TBI. He has a few in career so most likely damaged permanent goods And just one article just saying “who”

  29. The Buc Realist Says:

The “real” fans don’t want the Bucs to sign these so called “bargain” slappies!!!!!!!!! It will be better for the team to get as much and many compensatory picks for next year, so the New GM and new coaching staff ( since coach stale biscuit will re-retire) to start the official rebuild!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. Phil Says:

Maybe we could trade GMC and clear some cap room.

  31. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

At this point, I would rather find a guard in the draft. Perhaps Cappa will surprise us all.

Worry not, Peyton Barber is in the fold! A round of Ole Frothingslosh for everyone!

  34. StoutGospel Says:

@Joe predictably continues to use (and by usage insist) that the SI “tracker” is worth referring to time and again, even though we all know that it has been mentioned on here more than 5 times in last few weeks that the Rotoworld Free Agent Tracker is far superior, because well….it’s a COMPLETE FA Tracker. Aren’t you the guy who INSISTED Dee Ford wouldn’t leave the Chiefs? –Joe SI doesn’t even list many of the available players remaining, such as Marcus Gilchrist and others at every position, or any of the people that have been released in the past 48-72 hours. BUT…we all know really why @Joe doesn’t just switch over to the Rotoworld tracker….

Ajayi?? Hell no. Hi sback has flared up 3 times for extended periods between Miami and Philly stops, no wthe ACL surgery. TJ Yeldon in that respect would be a much wiser and healthier addition, for $4.5 million over 2 years. Of course Licht sat on not adding Mike Davis for 2 years $6 million that the Bears BRILLIANTLY did on Monday!!!

    Ho hum….

    Go Bucs! Land Quinnen!

  35. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Who said you could use a pic of me and my wife?

  36. TexBuc Says:

As a Armchair GM it sure looks like Todd Bowles will get the majority of the draft with the exception of maybe a guard.

    In Todd I trust.

  37. Joe Says:

BUT…we all know really why @Joe doesn’t just switch over to the Rotoworld tracker….
Joe has no earthly idea what you are referring to. And yes, Joe knows what Rotoworld is.

  41. BigMacAttack Says:

After reading this and all of Licht’s big moves this week, I’m stoked. We have a legitimate shot at going 6-10. The Bucs could move all the way up to 30’th in the power rankings. Exciting times.
