Reading Headlines

March 31st, 2019

Ridiculed.

This is what happens when a dude only reads a lede sentence of an Associated Press story and claims to be well-versed in a team’s plans.

Thus is the case with Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report, who Joe has caught a few times being, well, uninformed about the Bucs.

Gagnon writes even though the Bucs were nearly invisible during free agency (because the team had no cash to spend), Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht deserved a finger-wagging for signing Breshad Perriman, who Gagnon believes is a total bust.

Even with DeSean Jackson back in Philadelphia and Adam Humphries now a member of the Tennessee Titans, it isn’t as though the Bucs are hurting at wide receiver. Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are a strong starting duo.

If anything, the Buccaneers needed a new slot safety valve to replace Humphries and help provide comfort underneath to quarterback Jameis Winston in a crucial season. Yet instead of bringing Humphries back or adding a veteran slot option like Cole Beasley, Randall Cobb or Danny Amendola, the Bucs hired someone who is supposed to make his money outside.

They also could have saved money and gone with Phillip Dorsett or Chris Conley, both of whom have potential and have thus far been more reliable than Perriman.

From what Joe can gather, Chris Godwin can play slot receiver and Bucco Bruce Arians just might use him there. Joe remembers when Godwin was a rookie, then-Bucs coach Dirk Koetter said Godwin could easily play slot.

Also, Arians wanted more speed at receiver. Joe was told that was one reason why Humphries was not re-signed.

Enter Perriman who is lightning fast.

Of course, if Gagnon did some research (you know, like read Joe), he might be aware of this.

It seems Gagnon too often follows the tenets of the Colin Cowturd School of Journalism: Accuracy doesn’t mean a damn thing as long as you are interesting.

Random question here…I’ve never herd the scenario discussed…IF Kyler Murray fell to #5 and all the usual suspects we have coveted are off the board, is there any universe where BA would say, “Draft him!”?

  2. tickrdr Says:

You did great with lede, but you likely meant tenets not tenants.
    Please delete this post.

    tickrdr

  3. TOM Says:

Yes, Perriman has more speed than Hump but can he catch as good? I don’t think so. Personally I think BA is living to much in the past. But we shall see.

  4. richbucsfan Says:

My offer stands for proofreading to help you be the best site possible.

  5. ATrain Says:

Speed is nothing if you can’t catch for any role he would play

I think Hump was worth resigning because his ability to catch how many 3rd downs where converted because of him

We went for a Big Play Guy. Umm how did that work

  6. Buc believer Says:

Damn Joe I think we are a bit sensitive this morning. “See a pattern above? Gagnon apparently believes only white (read slow) receivers can play slot. How open minded.” Sheesh why does race have to come into EVERYTHING?????

  7. Not there yet Says:

Godwin in the slot will be better than humps, no one is worried about his departure. Look at it this way with perriman we have a cheaper speed guy on the outside to miss deep

  8. Tony Says:

Don’t start race bating Joe that’s a quick way to lose eyeballs on this website.

  9. Dewey Selmon Says:

At least Cowturd knows Randall Cobb is black. This might be the worst article I’ve ever read on this site in 10 years.

  10. Slugglife Says:

Of course there’s a pattern here- that pattern is inserting race into a poorly written article.

Nobody cares what race a player is Joe. Can he produce and help a team win. He can be blue for all I care. Let’s try leaving race out of the discussion.

  11. straightcashhomey Says:

This is the type of article…that reminds all that JBF is and always will be….just JBF.

  12. Jamaal Stanley Says:

You got to be f$&@in kidding me,y’all extra sensitive because he wrote “white and slow” in the same sentence. Really😠??? No one was interjecting any concern when Lovie Smith was fired and that word “incompetent” was being exercised by d$&@ near all you muthaf&@$s. Everyday I told myself I see what it is but I’ll play nice and not use the race card thing. My sentiment was validated by the lack of sustain for the one some of us now call Klueless. Vitriol he receives for being “inept “ ain’t hardly as bad as what went on here after Lovie was dismissed. I wonder why.. Save that punk@$$ s&@$ man. It’s weak.

  13. DooshLaRue Says:

Hey pansies….. get over the race thing, it’s a valid observation by Joe.

  14. Jamaal Stanley Says:

Like some of you muthaf@&$ don’t take a little extra pleasure in piling on Jameis Winston because he ain’t white😄. Really??? C’mon now let’s be for real. I’m talking bout the man last six games he was solid. I’m talking bout how numerous posters have shown the turnover thing is relatively average in comparison to other greats that have played the position but you still take pleasure in talking weak s&@). It’s cool tho, your mouths about to be shut real soon.

  15. Jamaal Stanley Says:

And lastly a little food for thought,it don’t take all that long to see where your commander and chief get his style and swag from. I read an interview once him saying at one point he was the only white student in his highschool. See,BA ain’t wit that some of you pull on here. BA love the brothers🤫.

  16. Magadude Says:

This is the dumbest thing Joe has ever written here, not to mention using feces in people’s names is flat disrepectful to the person being called that as well as readers. The whole patter thing about “white” receivers….racist as well as ignorant. Not to mention full of incorrect words. How unprofessional all around. As much as I can’t stand Tom Jones, he is right about you.

  17. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Hey Todd, you clearly haven’t heard a damn thing that Arians has said about Winston. You clearly don’t follow the team so don’t concern yourself with questions that have already been answered numberous times over the past couple of months. Go back to sleep until the draft and enjoy your new d lineman or linebacker.

  18. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

    Numerous

  19. Magadude Says:

Jamaal…are you nuts? Being strong the last six games of the fourth season of a #1 overall pick’s career is a bit narrow of a focus. You forget the abysmal first six games…the four he wasn’t allowed there and more where he really stunk it up an earned his benching. Oh, some say it was just the pressure on him. So unfair to expect him to perform. And yeah, 11 TDs and 3 Ints (won’t count fumbles to make you feel better) in his last six games is about what any team expects of their starting QB. In fact, that’s very good. But of course, factor in the QBR of 54 and 73 for two out of the six, along with the 2-4 record (not all his fault, but he’s a big part of it), you can hardly stand up and cheer Winston, nor can you say with any credibility that those who are critical of him get pleasure in it because he is black.

  20. Defense Rules Says:

Good article Joe (and at a slow time-of-year no less). Personally think that Perriman will surprise a lot of people. Only time will tell though.

Admittedly have trouble understanding the commenters dwelling on the ‘race thing’. According to data from the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport, 75 percent of head coaches are white, and 7 NFL head coaches in 2017 were black … 22%. BUT … while 18% of the U.S. population (2017) is black, 70 percent of NFL players are black. Seems to me like that’s a pretty good representation across-the-board, and my guess is that it’s based on qualifications & performance rather than race. Dickering over representation in specific positions (like slot receiver) seems rather picayune.

Random question here…I’ve never herd the scenario discussed…IF Kyler Murray fell to #5 and all the usual suspects we have coveted are off the board, is there any universe where BA would say, “Draft him!”?

Hey Todd I’ll help you out, no we wouldn’t draft him. There feel better now that you have your answer to most obvious question/answer ever?

  22. AlteredEgo Says:

They is the silly season of football…and now in this modern era of saturated mock drafts post combine…I call it the gristle season because we chew and chew with no satisfaction at all !

  23. Slugglife Says:

Way to go Jamal. You managed to bring your President into the discussion.

And those rambling posts cost me two minutes of my life I’ll never get back while gaining no deep knowledge or understanding.

    Well done dumba$$.

  24. Slugglife Says:

    Defense rules

Don start talking about merit based accomplishments. You’ll just confuse Jamaal.

  25. Jamaal Stanley Says:

Magy nall homie I ain’t nuts dudes. Just find me the HOF QB that made it with out solid defense,a running game,Competent coaching and quality special teams then get back to me dude. Take ya time wit that,I’m off all day.

  26. Tackleblockwin Says:

My take is that BA is simply replacing Speed with Speed. You lose Jackson’s wheels, you replace them with Perriman’s. I’m in no way comparing Perriman with Jackson from an overall talent standpoint. That would be silly. But Perriman still can glide, and with his speed you better cover him. Obviously having the receiver that can stretch the field was more important to BA. I suppose BA feels you can’t teach speed, but you can teach everything else. Let’s at least give the kid a shot.

  27. stpetebucsfan Says:

Anybody who doesn’t believe racism is alive and well in our nation is deaf, dumb and blind. I certainly understand the discomfort when it’s brought up and sports is “hopefully” color blind or at least an escape from dealing with reality. I get those who are upset…but really?

Did any of you watch the movie “White Men Can’t Jump”. I found it very entertaining even though it obviously played into an overworked stereotype.

AGAIN…read Chris Collinsworth’s story of being the only white guy in the State of Florida’s finals for the dashes. How the black CB’s overlooked him because of his color. It may not be right but it is real.

When I was in Greenville S.C. Furman was improving their basketball team rapidly under Joe Williams who had coached Artis Gilmore at Jax. They recruited a 6-4 kid from Kingsport TN. who supposedly could really sky. The purple white game to unveil the new team everybody full of anticipation until they saw that Rodney was white.

The disappointment was palpable (white boys can’t jump) until Rodney went up and did a 360 slam and the stands erupted.

Sadly for him Rodney broke another stereotype…he was dumb as a rock and easily the dullard of the team.

So shall we start another stereotype? Guys who jump really well are dumb. That would hold until you met the great Julius Erving an articulate, gracious man who btw could also jump.

  28. ATrain Says:

Wow Jamaal for some one who has refrained from using the race card you should let the flood gates open from Lovie (who sucks as a coach. FACT NOT RACE). To the President (which this is NOT a political site But how’s that economy working for you) To Jamies ( Who has been good at times BUT NOT ELITE as some want him to be FACT) Jamies not making throws is HIS FAULT NOT DEFENSE NOT WR Jamies fumbling or throwing horrible INT IS HIS FAULT

Don’t cheer for someone because the color of their skin THATS CALLED RACISM
IF YOU LIKE SOMEONE BECAUSE THEY ARE A CERTAIN COLOR IS THE SAME AS HATING BECAUSE THEY ARE A CERTAIN COLOR IT ALL RACISM.

GOD MADE MAN AND WOMAN PERIOD

  29. RustyRhinos Says:

Maybe Brad Gagnon just writes about what interests him. Just like the Joe’s do. He is getting paid for it just like the Joe’s do. Does he watch every practice, every player signing, player lost, probably not. He is a national reporter right? Not a Tampa bay area reporter/blogger like the Joe’s are. Is he correct in his every report put out. No. I never heard of him until I read this article. So I do not really care.

    Go Bucs!!!!

  30. SteelStudBuc Says:

I’d rather have a slow white guy than a stupid black guy that can’t speak English as a first language.

  31. SteelStudBuc Says:

Intelligence matters to some… especially when these guys are university educated?????

  32. Pickgrin Says:

So Jamaal is NOSBOS? How did I ever figure that one out?

  33. J Says:

Joes, that’s an extremely wide accusation. You’re not reading between the lines, you’re doing lines with that take.

I think all articles should be passed over Ira’s desk before being published from now on because you guys are starting to look and sound like a daytime soap opera.

This article was very poorly thought out.

  34. stpetebucsfan Says:

BTW Joe’s boy Thomas Bassenger has a GREAT piece on JW this morning outlining what we’ve all witnessed the past four years. JW’s inconsistency and accuracy problems.

Bassenger a solid reporter when it comes to incorporating stats uses not the QB rating but something called the DVOA…Defense adjusted Value over average. IE it weights things like meaningless stat inflation during the 4th quarter of hopeless games..it considers whether a QB has time to throw or is under pressure…down and distance…REAL game influences.

JW is among the best at throwing under pressure…sadly among the worst when we give him time. And despite all the kvetching about our OL they were slightly better than average and JW had a clean pocket 2/3 of the time. That doesn’t address their running protection but we have a solid pass blocking line.

But Bassenger concludes the same as many of us…JW has struggled with consistency and accuracy though most of his first four years…but the final six games of last year give us hope!
2019 will determine whether that “hope” is realized.

  35. Magadude Says:

Jamaal is a poser. No one is that stupid, and no one writes like that.

  36. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

LOL, SteelStudBuc, are you in the Klan or are you just your garden variety racist?

  37. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

SteelStudBuc, something tells me you would have no problem supporting a dumb white guy though.

  38. Magadude Says:

J, Ira was a class act back when the print media and the Tribune was in its heydey. It is a shame the town was only big enough really for one newspaper, and Ira is still better than anyone at at loser TBT. I have wondered more than once if Ira wondered himelf just what he’d gotten himself into by writing for JBF. I’d bet Ira wants nothing to do with the likes of this thing posted today. Run Ira, Run!

  39. J Says:

I hope Ira sees these comments and has sit down with Steve and Lee.

You guys need a come to Jesus meeting today.

  40. J Says:

Of course I’m in moderation now. Joe you guys should be in full time moderation if you have an issue with what’s being said here. You’re probably going to say “YOU CANT ATTACK JOES CREDIBILITY LIKE THAT” in all bold font, yet you JOES are doing the same to Gagnon. I guess the grass is only green on your side.

  41. Todd Says:

    @touchdowntampabay and @ndog

I bet if we were in the same room and I asked this question, your tones wouldn’t be so condescending and rude.

Because if they were, I’d beat your ass.

Make yourself know at the Bucs draft party…let’s have a conversation there and see if you two are so brave outside living in your parent’s basements as an adult.

  42. GrayBalls Says:

@slugglife If the Bucs had a blue receiver attendance would be WAY up. Well, for a few games anyway

  43. ATrain Says:

    Hey Todd

I have beers and Wings that doesn’t happen

  44. DooshLaRue Says:

    Pickgrin

I think you and I spotted NOS-Jamaal-BOSS a little while back.
I think he’ll be coming back out of the closet soon!

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Buc believer Says:
“Sheesh why does race have to come into EVERYTHING?????”

Yes…why does it? Either white on black or black on white.

  46. Jamaal Stanley Says:

And Magy can eat a fat d$&@. Sorry if my slang offends you. I talk on this site the same way I rap wit homies round the way. And yea man this NOSBOS,went to Jamaal cause when I initially started posting again Joe had me under “anonymous” tag. I’m like not anonymous I’m freakin NOSBOS. That tag will be back right around the kick off to the season tho.

  47. DB55 Says:

Mike Evans is our best slot receiver and don’t forget about bobo.

  48. Todd Says:

    @ATrain

I have a sneaky suspiscion you’re right. Keyboard warriors are 99% coward…who hide behind their anonymity.

Now, regarding that beer and those wings, let’s embibe together as we watch the Bucs draft Kyler Murray at #5! 😂

  49. Pickgrin Says:

    Jamaal Stanley Says:
“I’m like not anonymous I’m freakin NOSBOS”

    LOL

  50. ATrain Says:

Ok so since the TWO KEYBOAD WARRIORS have gone silent

I’m In Todd Wings and Beers at the Draft

  51. stpetebucsfan Says:

Kyler Murray nor any offensive player will be drafted at #5. It’s a clear as the nose on our faces this team needs defensive help and the draft is loaded with defensive help.

There are MORE than five DL available who would help this team instantly and I do not disagree that as D.R. likes to suggest a generational player at MLB would also be a terrific addition. If you believe White is that generational guy he’ll go to us at #5.

JW has been awesome…JW has sucked…all we have to do is find a way to tilt the % in favor of the awesome…more importantly is just consistency and solid decision making. I think BA and Leftwich can do it.

  52. catcard202 Says:

People need to step back & look take a big picture look at what Licht, BA, Bowles & Bucs mind-trust have done.

They spun DJAX & other non-performing/non-scheme fit pieces into a handful of tier2 starter level role players that fill specific new staff scheme roster needs.

They retained their pending FA starting LT for the next 3yrs @ less than market $$$…Plus they stole a pretty good Punter from the 49ers that can handle kickoff duties.

WR Perriman @ $4M will be a steal, if he just does his part & stays healthy. He’ll be used to take the top off…While playing his ass off for a dumb $$ FA contract in 2020…Same goes for $LB Buchanon, OLB Barrett, SS Brice & RG Watford.

As of today, one can easily envision Perriman accounting for (5-7) big play TD’s & probably drop a handful more drops…But his presence will force teams to respect the speed & cover the deep 3rd, which stretches the field & creates spacing for under routes to gash DEF up the seams…..The threat of the top getting taken off will open up the middle for Evans / OJ / Godwin / Brate & RB’s to feast.

  53. Tony Says:

I just thought that accusing another writer of racism without any proof was considered slander and obviously put in there to inflame a group of people as seen here in the comment section. I noticed Joe deleted it so I’m guessing he agrees or the lawyers do.

  54. SteelStudBuc Says:

    @TouchdownTampaBay

I’m not in the Klan… for example, I just can’t stand to hear people like Kwon Alexander speak…the guy was in university and he can’t even form a sentence in English. I’m glad that idiot is gone.

I’m not a racist but if you get offended easily that’s on you man.

  55. Chief K Says:

don’t underestimate Bobo and Watson this year as the “others” at WR

  56. Magadude Says:

Jamaal, your words don’t offend me. LOL. You do offend black people by being a moron and pretending to write like a brother, and you offend all others by race baiting.

  57. DB55 Says:

Being strong the last six games of the fourth season of a #1 overall pick’s career is a bit narrow of a focus. You forget the abysmal first six games…the four he wasn’t allowed there and more where he really stunk it up an earned his benching.
    ——————
I’m guessing these are the same people who were screaming to draft Mariota. Geez where are all the Mariota lovers now? 11/8 TD/Int ratio with one of the best olines and running games in the league.

I blame the FL public education system.

  58. Magadude Says:

Tony, what Joe wrote wouldn’t get him into legal trouble. Nothing against the law on saying it looked like he was showing a pattern of picking white dudes. But it is a dumb thing to say and hints how Joe probably thinks. However, real repurcussions are in losing a place at the table….credentials so to speak, which would hurt much worse, which is always a risk when writing junk like that. Also by writing like that, Joe makes Miko Grimes look like Ernest Hemingway, unforetuneatly. He heaps it on himself. yeah, my blog, my rules, right. Sure.

TouchdownTampBay….SteelBuc makes a point though. If he took issue with white dude’s poor grammar, no one would think a thing. Mention it about a black dude who said the same thing or similar, despite having the same education opportunities or better, he’s suddenly branded a racist just for bringing it up. Evan and Winston are worse English speakers on the team, truth be told. Of course, Godwin abd McCoy do well. What does that mean? Well, it means Winston and Evans speak poor English–they should apply themselves more to learn their own language. Nothing else.

  59. DB55 Says:

    StPete

And despite all the kvetching about our OL they were slightly better than average and JW had a clean pocket 2/3 of the time.
    ——————
That’s total BS!!! We need to sit and watch film so you can show me where he had a clean pocket for 2/3 of his throws. CHILD PLEASE!!!

I’ve read this guys articles and he’s a bum, clueless like Hawaii and the rest of the TB media (present company excluded of course).

Jaboo got hit 20 times in 1 game, got sacked 6 times in another, on avg he prob gets sacked at least 4x per game and is consistently throwing the ball with defenders in his face thanks to Benenoch and Dotson.

One thing I would bet my house on is if you give Jaboo 3-5 sec in a clean pocket he will light a defense up, GARUNTEED!!!

  60. Jean Lafitte Says:

    stpete

like always, a man of reason. *golf clap*

  61. Tony Says:

@ magazine Got ya, that makes sense. Love the website and the Joe’s articles are usually awesome . Its just about the only place on the internet to get good bucs info.

  62. Tony Says:

    @magadude haha autocorrect

  63. C2asante Says:

You people amuse me with your fake outrage when slow overacted possession receivers are called out, and the fake tough guy threatening to physically assault someone is just stupid

  64. stpetebucsfan Says:

    DB55

Nice job of shooting the messenger because you don’t like the message. I never suspected you of being in the “fake news” crowd.

Bassenger wasn’t writing about HIS observations. The entire staff charted all 378 of JW’s passes in 2018. They actually looked at them for down and distance..was his pocket clean or collapsed…then Bassenger went to the Football Outsiders DVOA charts which consider EVERYTHING including time to complete the pass…down and distance…game situation..4th quarter of a blowout in garbage time or game on the line and compare the results to the NFL QB average. Bassenger actually points out specific plays that JW made and didn’t make and ints he threw.

But hey an ad hominem spewing (I’ve read this guys articles and he’s a bum, clueless like Hawaii and the rest of the TB media”) and factual takes like… “One thing I would bet my house on is if you give Jaboo 3-5 sec in a clean pocket he will light a defense up, GARUNTEED!!!”

You clearly haven’t reviewed all of JW’s plays last year. So you’ll have to forgive me if I take the REPORTING of a serious journalist over the opinion of a fanboy on a blog. Again it’s all fake news…if you don’t like the message just shoot the messenger.

  65. Jamaal Stanley Says:

I offend black people by trying to pretend uhh okay magy what you said. Cheers to you dude, would be pretty weak of you and any other poster to get in your feelings over the words of some internet mystery. You’re entitled to your lame opinions and I’m entitled to minds. I’m anal tho mention my tag brightguy and rest assured I’ll be responding. And uhh I’m still waiting on that HOF QB I asked about earlier. If you’re having a difficult time thinking of one it’s cool dude. One doesn’t exist. 🤫dumb@$$.

  66. Jamaal Stanley Says:

    Now back to family time😊🤟🏾.

  67. Jamaal Stanley Says:

Oh but before I go magy again that was one (QB) that made it into the Hall with very little to no running game thru-out his career, bottom tier defenses thru-out his career and sub-par speacil teams thru-out his career. Good luck with that tiger. And good try 😊 attempting to change subject the in all. Slick.

  68. DooshLaRue Says:

    NOSBOS

You say you’ll be back when the season starts….
Isn’t that usually the exact time you disappear because your inane predictions are proven totally wrong.

If I’m not mistaken, this will be your third year doing it.

  69. Magadude Says:

C’mon Jamaal…stop blaming everyone but Winston for Winston’s problems. I’d swear you must be an FSU fan but you are too stupid to spell it, much less go there. What QB made it into the HoF with record turnovers and losing seasons? Hmmmm. Gee, that’s a tough one.

  70. Jamaal Stanley Says:

Dushe I have a life dude, and tell me exactly what has been worth commenting on during this with this team in recent years. Don’t meditate on that too hard dude. And there goes magy😃👋🏾. Question for you sport. Since mention “race baiting”. Was it not race baiting when Lovie Smith was fired and words like “incompetence” and “inept” were used to describe this man repeatedly on a daily basis. Hell folk name still comes round here to this day. I find it somewhat peculiar Dirk Koetter hasn’t quite received the same level distain on his name.

  71. firethecannons Says:

There is no reason that the acquisition of Perriman could not be the best of 2019 for Licht. Perriman is way motivated and grateful and talented. He does not have attitude and is likely to put the work in needed. I for one cant wait to watch this guy operate–I am expecting good things as the league is likely to overlook him and double Evans, good things with this guy are likely to happen. Just glad to get rid of Desean Jackson and his fokked up attitude.

  72. Jamaal Stanley Says:

I think you spell it fUs. But that’s neither here nor there homeboy. But yea I do rock wit the Simiknowles. No one is saying or has ever stated Jameis Winston is the perfect QB. Hell If know one point’em out so the rest of us can get an idea of what he looks like. If you can’t then maybe just maybe you should getting off the man’s nut$@c awhile an give him the opportunity to perform with those components that some of us are saying just help his overall game. Now that can’t be too difficult to understand should it. I’m sure you’re some college @$$ professes. Everyone on here claims to be one.

  73. Mike Evans Goat Says:

I was just about to post that Jamal can’t be NOSBOS, cuz I got along with NOSBOS and agreed with most of his posts. But then I read him saying that he is in fact NOSBOS lol. Seems like a much more angry and controversial person.

  74. DooshLaRue Says:

    @MEGOAT

    Yeah, he is bitter.
Word on the street is that NOS had to take a demotion at The Foot Locker for trying to be a little too real.
