Licht Praises Bucs RBs

March 25th, 2019

Stunning statement.

Joe nearly fell out of his chair when he heard the following.

Today, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht was going through the media car wash at the NFL owners meeting in Arizona.

Licht did a sitdown with the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio and his version of Robin, co-host and former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms. Then, Licht popped up on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

There, Joe isn’t sure if Licht was trolling Bucs fans, trying to prop up underperforming players, outing former Bucs coach Dirk Koetter, sandbagging listeners or was simply sincere.

“We feel very good about our running backs situation.”

WHAT???

How can this be? The Bucs had an embarrassing rushing attack last year.

Peyton Barber, who folks seem smitten with because he gives effort — God forbid a professional athlete should play with effort — only rushed for an average of a hair over 50 yards a game. And Ronald Jones who looks like one of the biggest busts in Bucs history was borderline impotent if not invisible. And Licht thinks he can roll with this outfit to the playoffs?

What exactly does he see that no one else sees?

Again, Joe isn’t sure what’s going on here. Either Licht is trying to pump up underperforming running backs to give them confidence, or the previous coaching staff had no idea what they were doing with running backs or Licht is sandbagging fans.

If Licht truly is good with his current stable of running backs, then why did he send running backs coach Todd McNair to work out Penn State running back Miles Sanders and Georgia running back Elijah Holyfield last week, two of the better running backs in the draft?

Maybe the previous coaching staff really was this bad in using running backs? Holy smokes, Joe hopes that is the case. Joe surely hopes for Licht’s sake that comment doesn’t come back to bite him in the backside come December.

Barber is decent but Jones is a borderline bust already imo. We should be looking at RB options but we just took Jones in the 2nd round. I doubt Licht would draft another high rounder RB even if that is the right thing to do. If we draft an RB I think it comes from rounds 4-7.

  2. SteveK Says:

    Hahaha good post, Joe!

We have a questionable RB situation.

  3. Hodad Says:

What’s he supposed say Joe, I wouldn’t know a good running back from a bad one? This team is what it is talent wise because of Licht. His losing record is a direct result of over paying for average talent, and for blowing just about every second pick he’s ever traded up for. The guy doesn’t know his ass from his elbow, but at least he’s smart enough not to admit it.

  4. Joe Says:

    What’s he supposed say Joe,

For starters? How about, “We need better production from our running backs.” That would be a pretty innocent yet accurate statement that shouldn’t offend the delicate feelings of a couple of professionals.

  5. SteveK Says:

    Exactly, Joe! ^

No need to sugar coat it, or continue to put another coat of lip stick on this pig

Now or never for Licht! Get it right

  6. Andrew Says:

Jameis needs to have a Matt Ryan mvp year where the offense is explosive and crushes teams and the defense does just enough

  7. donuts Says:

Is it news that the Bucs GM is clueless? No.

  8. Jason Says:

Peyton Barber would fair much better if we aren’t blowing a lead early on and abandoning the run game near the half.

  9. SteveK Says:

Proof is in the pudding, Dominik had a QB go mental, MRSA, and several years of limited spending in FA.

For as much as I wanted Dom gone after his fifth year sat the helm, he has a better record than Jason Licht after 5 years.

Unacceptable results. We fired an offensive coach- who gave us the top passing stack in the NFL- and kept a GM who stinks out loud at FA and struggles with round two of the draft.

  10. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Joe, are you forgetting what time of year it is and the draft is a month away? Is he supposed to say yeah we need a RB and we are plan to take one that we have our eye on in the third round? I assume this may be a smokescreen. Regardless, I am quite sure the GM does not feel good at all regarding the RB situation.

  11. SteveK Says:

Where is the talent on this roster?

Cross your fkngers two QBs go in the top 4 so we can get one of Q Williams, J Allen or N Bosa.

It would be amazing to get on e of the big three. If they’re gone trade down and bpa.

  12. AlteredEgo Says:

  13. Dewey Selmon Says:

Everyone is BSing everyone with the draft 1 month away. We are going after a RB, whether or not it’s day 2 or 3 is to be seen.

  14. Loyaltotheend Says:

If Licht believes this he should be fired immediately

He’s awful at building a roster

  15. Not there yet Says:

It’s like lovie smith never left the building nothing but lies this entire off-season. Can’t be happy with the line and the run game as pathetic as it has been. Starting to think licht is delusional and thinks in his mind it’ll be a top ten o line if they simply upgrade the guard position. No one is dumb enough to believe him and every gm knows he’s drafting a running back unless he’s gonna go all 2016 and wait until the 5 round and cut the draft pick again

  16. Pickgrin Says:

Attempts at reading anything meaningful into something said by a GM this time of year is an exercise in futility.

If anything – this statement probably means the opposite – we are drafting a RB sometime in the first 4 rounds.

  17. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

Well…he is the architect of the “best offense ever” and wins one out of every three games his team plays…so why no faith in The Licht Weight?!

  18. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

Smokescreen city baby. That’s all this time of year is good for.

  19. 813bucboi Says:

the previous staff couldnt develop mud if they had sand and water…..

this staff will develop rojo and wilson along with the rookie we draft…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  20. 813bucboi Says:

What exactly does he see that no one else sees?

players that havent been developed and coaches that can develop…..the previous staff could only develop pass catchers and even they were inconsistent…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  21. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Joe you should see a doctor, too much smoke inhalation is going to your brain.

  22. Defense Rules Says:

@813bucboi … “this staff will develop rojo and wilson along with the rookie we draft.” Have to give you one thing bucboi … at least you’re CONSISTENT. A LOT more than I can say for the talent that you seem to believe our Bucs are stocked with.

  23. Jean Lafitte Says:

If only we had an o-line that could run block

  24. Conte Piscatelli Says:

Ok fifty years a game, but how many touches? 12/game?, And how many times did Barber have a 20+ run called back because a backside blocker (Auclair) got called for holding. Is Barber a future Hall of famer, no, but he could be a functional starter in this league in the mold of CJ Anderson who some have a hard on for.

  25. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Ol jason licht drafting and signing 5-11 talent, when will the licht nightmare end

  26. BigOne Says:

Joe.. quit acting like a friggin rookie . What time of year is it? It’s the time everyone sandbags . Lordy .

  27. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

Fix the o-line, fix the run game. Plus, coaching does matter.

  28. Rod Munch Says:

What team says position X is God awful and we’re going after it hard in the draft? I don’t know of any.

  29. Destinjohnny Says:

This is why we have 5-11 talent
THis is why we have one scout in the entire southeast

  30. joestang Says:

stop trying to make excuses for Licht. He is a total bust of a GM and should have been shown the door years ago. He is killing this team. FIR LICHT AND HIRE DERRICK BROOKS.

  31. Dubcity06 Says:

He never said the OL was great… you dance around the holes in the Offensive Line better than Charles Simms.

  32. Buc believer Says:

Anyone else need further proof that Licht is a dunce?? If you can’t tell from his pictures with that I am missing or have an extra chromosome face simply listen to this dunces words.

  33. GrayBalls Says:

@joestang did you not see how terribly the Storm did while Brooks was running them? How, exactly, do you think he would fare any better in the NFL? Don’t get me wrong, I loved him as a player, I would love him back in the organization, in some capacity. Definitely not as GM or scout, though.
