“It’s An Open Competition But It’s Probably Not”

New Bucs No. 2 QB Blaine Gabbert

Tough times for Ryan Griffin.

The quote in the headline above from Bruce Arians says it all about new Bucs backup QB Blaine Gabbert. He’s the guy behind America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, Bruce Arians said today at the NFL Owners Meetings at breakfast with Joe and other media.

(Arians said he thinks Gabbert officially has signed).

Translation, Gabbert is the backup, and Griffin is No. 3 if they decide to keep a third QB and there are no injuries.

Arians said he loves Gabbert and he’s been in Arians’ offense.

“We all go to a workout and he’s probably going to shine more than anybody in this year’s draft or last year’s draft because of his talent,” Arians said of Gabbert.

Griffin having zero regular-season snaps drove Arians to get another backup, he said, though he likes Griffin’s practice film.

Griffin is gone then….the Bucs will draft a QB for the #3 role on the 53 man roster

  2. FlBoy84 Says:

Griff was actually pretty solid in preseason last year as well, though it wasn’t vs regular season competition and schemes by any means.

  3. Robert Says:

    crabman is triggered, gonna fail

at least whe have a real QB now

  4. JB Says:

I am hope Callahan makes the cut.

  5. The Buc Realist Says:

LOL, just saw a 2020 mock draft that had the Bucs overall #1 draft pick!!!!!!! They selected a “real” franchise QB of course!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. D-Rome Says:

You know, I was really hoping to see Griffin at least play a half last year. As so many have said, he has looked very good in several pre-season games. Granted, he may be throwing against 2nd and 3rd team players, but he was also throwing to 2nd and 3rd team players. He always looked sharp. The Bucs should have put him in for a half at some point last year to see what they really have with him but….well….you know….Bucs….

  7. Loyaltotheend Says:

I doubt they draft a QB until Jameis flames out then

  8. ChanEpic Says:

My tea leaves tell me, that BA’s tea leaves knows that Jameis may get injured and or pull a bonehead move = Blaine taking over. I mean their games couldn’t be any more dissimilar and BA is on record saying Gabbert already knows the offense. Griff, stays in this scenario. Meet the new boss, sort of the same as the old boss(but probably not).

  9. TOM Says:

Whoa! What about the fact that Fitz is gone because BA didn’t want Winston looking over his shoulder?

    @Realist

I know a good doctor that can help you with exclamation point stammer you are experiencing. According to a friend that suffered from the same affliction, the psychoanalyst inserts a sharp object on the exclamation point key of all of your devices.
My friend went on to say that after a week of suffering through bleeding fingertips, he was cured!!!!!!!
It’s a gradual thing. You bloody yourself less and less as each day passes.
Wolfe, its developer, calls this treatment Systematic Desensitization.

    Just trying to help …

  11. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

BA does do a ton of coach speak…. loved djax = gone, loves gmc = going to be gone

  12. Jim Says:

    You know? I just don’t know…

  13. MadMax Says:

Well, that eliminates QB from the draft. Im good with that.

Also for those who hate the idea of us drafting White at #5, dont worry, raiders are taking him at 4. So that leaves Q as a possible, or a trade down for a QB hungry team like the Giants, then we can maybe land Oliver 7-10 plus pick up a few more options. Im all about that!!!

Whites gone….going to the Raiders 🙁

  14. DRFEELGOOD Says:

Good pickup because of his experience with BA and the weapons we have. But, he in NO WAY brings cause for Jaboo to be looking over his shoulder. Perfect backup material.

  15. JabooBuc Says:

MadMax: would be happy with Allen or Williams or trading down. But please, no Oliver.

  16. MadMax Says:

Jaboo, i doubt Allen will be there too. Q is possible and I would LOVE that!! Why no Oliver? You know he was misused as a Nose tackle many times, right? I think he’s a sleeper DT….was once touted as a #1 overall. He has a great burst like GMC and I think he would do well in a 3-4 at edge.

  17. Defense Rules Says:

MadMax … Have seen several drafts that have Raiders taking White. I don’t believe any of them. Gruden NEEDS a DE to replace Mack. He MIGHT even take a QB, who knows.

  18. MadMax Says:

    D, I hope so….We need D White!

  19. Rod Munch Says:

Gabbert has already proven to be an awful NFL QB, so yeah, he knows the system and that’s great and all, but does anyone think he could lead the team to the playoffs if Winston was to get hurt? Of course not. That’s why Ryan has a chance, at least we don’t know for certain yet that he’s a failure.

  20. Jeagan1999 Says:

I would think that they still need to determine which one is “less intimidating” to Winston, before they pencil in the depth chart.

My guess is Gabbert. He actually has a WORSE career TD/INT ratio than Jameis does….so he’s got that going for him…which is nice.

  21. golfbum Says:

Bucco Bruce = Lovie Smith I hope not.

  22. Rod Munch Says:

Defense Rules – I could see Gruden trading for the rights to Roddy White, that would keep in his tradition of wanting old washed up former Falcon WRs who retired years ago.

For those millennials out there, that’s a reference to Gruden throwing a fit after Rich McKay refused to sign Andre Rison in 2003, a full three years after he retired.
