Bucs Got Smart

March 17th, 2019

Bucs coach Bruce Arians.

The Bucs made many moves and non-moves since the legal tampering period began last week. And the Bucs have taken some pointed jabs at their vision, or in some cases what people believe to be lack of vision.

But Justis Mosqueda of Bleacher Report really, really likes one move the Bucs made last week. And that move was inking a speedy wide receiver.

The 25-year-old Perriman, a 2015 first-round pick who ran a 4.19-second 40-yard dash, broke out in 2018 with the Browns, catching 10 balls for 259 yards and two touchdowns in December. The potential that he’d carry over that December success, at 25.9 yards per reception, must have sold Arians on the wideout.

Joe doesn’t know if Perriman “broke out” last year but he did have his best year in the NFL. That’s not saying much but there was improvement made by the former first-round pick.

If Perriman’s season last year is a sliver of things to come, then yeah, it would be a fantastic signing.

The positive point in all of this is that there are very few human beings who can run a 4.1-40. Of course, we all know just because someone can run like the wind on a straight line does not mean he will be a football player.

Joe is willing to wait to see what Arians can do with Perriman.

You guys remember when Dom the Dumb built a roster of 4.6 WR’s??

Now, we have a legit WR core.

Mike Evans- 6ft 5, 4.55 forty yard dash.
Chris Godwin- 6ft 2, 4.3-4.4 forty yard dash.
Justin Watson- 6 ft 2, 4.3-4.4 forty yard dash.
    Perriman- 6ft 2. 4.2-4.3 forty yard dash.

This is an NFL prototype WR core.

Hopefully, Bobo Wilson has been training as hard as Julian Edelman this offseason. If so, he could be a legit slot WR.

  2. Bird Says:

    Just has to stay healthy.

He has speed and bigger target then DJax so that is a win for Jameis

  3. Bird Says:

On a side note on another player :

I read article from Denver Broncos beat writer on what Bucs were getting in Shaquil Barrett

They felt he was good enough to be a starter ; good against run and pass. Slightly better against run. But will still get after QB. Is ok in coverage when he is forced to drop back.

They thought he was worth a multi year contract at 8-10 mil per year so the Bucs getting him for 4-5 was a huge bargain

  4. Ndog Says:

Bird to be clear the problem with DJax for Jameis was not the size of his body/catch radius, it was the size of his heart!

  5. jjbucfan Says:

  6. BucEmUp 7 Says:

    Punt return man

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Considering our money crunch……we also did well to get Shaq Barrett…..

The jury is out on our punter, Pinion…..but as a holder for Robbie Gould, he was successful on 75-78 FGs…….that may solve some of our holder problems. He was also #1 in fair catches…
As a kickoff specialist, he was third in the league on distance with 64.5 yards. So, we won’t have to rely on our Kicker for kickoffs…..that should broaden the field for our next FG kicker (may be Santos)

  8. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

So far, I’d grade our offseason an A-. We’ve been very smart with money, and that’s a good thing. Most of the teams this offseason have SEVERELY overpaid for average production (IE Kwon & Hump), and that’s gonna burn them for years to come. We’ve made savvy veteran deals, and those are usually the best deals.

    Good job Licht & BA.

  9. Bird Says:

    Ndog

No offense but I Honestly can’t believe you just said that.
And I still can’t figure out how old you are ?
    Wow

Plus other posters would disagree. They blamed DJax all day /every day. And his tiny alligator arms .

I will say it . DJax was a diva . He went here cause he thought he would get his numbers. Maybe a championship. He wants to be hall of famer. His personal stats matter. Not so much worried about team. There are other receivers just like him.

So are you saying his heart ? He purposely didn’t want to get his numbers cause he wanted to torpedo Jameis ? He didn’t want to average 100 1 td a game to hurt Jameis ?

All he cares about is getting his but not with Jameis ? So no effort when Jameis at qb. Only when fitz at qb?
    Cmon man.

  10. Bucnjim Says:

When a team is so offensive cap heavy it is tough to build a D through free agency. The only chance is to sign potential and hope for the perfect defensive draft. They need to get young and aggressive across the board! This whole nice guy finesse thing has yet to work for them.

  11. Bird Says:

Are you still in high school?

  12. Bird Says:

The only free agent pick I have an issue right now was the punter.
He got a quality deal for someone in bottom half of nfl. Over 3-4 mil gauranteed

But holding judgement. Let’s see what he can do for Bucs.

  13. Tbbucs3 Says:

Why are we gonna rely on Justin Watson again?

Remember when Kenny Bell was supposed to be good?

  14. MadMax Says:

Now to stay smart and draft D. White @5….Defensive rookie of the year, will probably have 150+ tackles and 6+ sacks….you heard it here first!

Did you see that guy cry after he killed that 40 while on the phone with his fam? Thats heart! Thats playing to succeed! He hit his mark and all of the hard work up to that moment had paid off. You cant buy that!!! Money is money, whatever….wheres that heart, determination, talent and skill? You got that, its worth a lot more than money!

  15. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

I think that since todd bowles & BA are the ones building the defense they did ok but licht has put this team so far behind with his bs moves the past 5 years it will take 2-3 years to retool the team the way BA & bowles want

  16. Jamaal Stanley Says:

Max,funny you would mention 6 sacks for Devin White next season. That’s precisely the number I was thinking in my mind while at work yesterday.

  17. Bird Says:

    Madmax

Love devin white myself. I hope he is a buc.
It may be difficult to pass on bosa , Williams and Allen if there

I hope arians , especially Bowles gets to make the pick. Licht can take a seat Because this pick could be the building block of the Bucs defense for the next 5 years plus.
Never good to be so bad to pick in top 5 , but if you do ..it’s important to draft that potential rookie of the year and / or future pro bowler

  18. Jamaal Stanley Says:

Ndog,if they have half a mind they know exactly where you’re coming from when it comes to the coaching aspect you reference. I mean look at the number of players klueless koetter had playing out of position. S&@; was laughable. But let’em run they’re mouths bro,it makes them feel good to do so. Camp already right round corner. We’ll see what these brainiacs round here have to say then.

  19. Buc believer Says:

WOW what awesome stats for a WHOLE month! 10 whole catches for 259 yards and TWO count them TWO whole touchdowns! Wow in 4 games!!! Mike Evans should be jealous and worried! Excuse me while I wipe the sarcasm that is dripping from my keyboard.

  20. Jamaal Stanley Says:

The only player I pause for a moment on Devin White is Q. Just cause Joey is good doesn’t guarantee little brother will be also. And this wiry josh Allen y’all drool over from basketball U Kentucky (is there another player in the league from Kentucky???)doesn’t jump off the screen to me when I watch. He won’t be able to solely rely on speed at the nfl level. 238lbs??? Once grown @$$ men get their paws on him it’s over. How exactly do y’all see him fitting??? 4/3 3 point stance ain’t happening. 3/4 olb 2 point stance maybe.

  21. Jamaal Stanley Says:

Uhh none-believer,don’t think he signed to be a #1 WR. He has skill set that can’t coached. Pure unadulterated speed. Uhh,our new commander finds that highly attractive. Put-it-together.

  22. TDTB Says:

Trade Brate and a 4th this year and a 3rd next year to the Lions for their 1st round pick (8th overall) and we will be able to trade down out of 5th overall to QB needy team and still draft White…plus clear cap space.

  23. Bucsfanman Says:

I posed this on another thread. Why is there no talk of the 2 Clemson DTs?
Not at #5. It’s just that no one’s talking about them. I’m sure that someone besides me saw them play.

  24. TBUC North Carolina Says:

    TDTB

Dude U R dreaming if you think Detroit would do that trade!!

  25. AlteredEgo Says:

Folks are about to find out that it was talent not coaching last year…….and Bruce Aneurysm will too

  26. stpetebucsfan Says:

We’ve all heard the adage practice makes perfect. A coach I respected greatly told me once that it is a misnomer. He corrected….PERFECT practice makes perfect.

DJAX did neither!!! Perriman has a lot to prove. JW has a lot to prove. They both live in the area. I suspect those two will be working hard to show their talent this year! That alone will be a major improvement over DJAX…that and another six million bucks for the cap and the absence of cancer in the locker room.

  27. Jeffbuc Says:

    what tbuc said

  28. DooshLaRue Says:

    @NOS-MAAL

Where are you working at these days?
Did they give you back your job as the token Caucasian at The Foot Locker?

Can you still get me that discount?

  29. Owlykat Says:

Let’s say it. The Bucs got smart because BA is smart and has proven it his whole career. So those Licht haters who are worried about who he will draft are wasting their time. First off he drafted last year for the first time to fill needs first instead of just BPA without trying to fill needs, such as Jones was picked to fill our need for a take it to the house change of pace back. But this time BA will be sittung right by him and will steer him to the best pick. Thank goodness we have BA and the smart picks we have been making in Free Agency have BA’s smarts written all over them. And I won’t be at all surprised if BA’s Assistant Coaches develop Jones to this year turn into the Change of Pace Take It To The House RB he was supposed to be. Koetter was a bafoon and most of his Assistants like Warhop were too. BA will never wring his hands after a loss and say: “I would fix it if I knew how”. LOL

  30. Jarhead Says:

@teacherman, that is impressive speed. That’s a y’all WR group as well. Fast and tall, I like it!!!

  31. Owlykat Says:

We can now stop all the stories about more Free Agents we need to sign with the exception of Claiborne for our Veteran CB, which has already been a story here. I would also like for us now to pay Adams to return and be available to bolster our Special Teams and be available if we need to fill a Free Safety or a CB vacancy because of injury or holding accountable by benching or firing which never happened under Koetter.

  32. cmurda Says:

I always look at the whole picture when judging a WR’s production. I’m not saying Perriman is a polished all-around WR but I’m also not convinced that he’s a bust. He went to a Ravens team that is a ground and pound team that featured an overrated Joe Flacco as QB. As soon as he arrived at a team that airs it out, he was successful. It’s a good low risk, high reward acquisition.

  33. cmurda Says:

Owlykat. Adams as in Andrew Adams? He’s a Detroit Lion.

  34. AlteredEgo Says:

If Perriman was all that he would have gone to “The U”…like his dad…

  35. Figures Says:

Bobo Wilson sucks. And probably won’t make the team. Maybe the practice squad.
The only people that think he’s good are the idiot FSU fans.

  36. Cgmaster27v Says:

Bird ,stop defending that diva its embarrassing you. Yea ndog was 100% right, that mesean has zero heart. Didnt want to practice, which you know ,has a little into do with timing, and was just an all around D**k But hey , people like you keep pretending he was anything but a 1 trick pony who gave half asses effort.

  37. Cgmaster27v Says:

You can always yelk the insecure tough guys like figures. He likes to insult others because they think a player can be decent. Not one person nole fan or jor said he was anything special. You must be a gaytor fan. That explains your stupidity.

  38. Mike Evans Goat Says:

Can we stop talking about Andrew Adams? He’s signed with Detroit a week ago.

  39. AlteredEgo Says:

BA will see Jamyth throw live for the first time on April Fools Day this year…

  40. Figures Says:

Lmao I’m stupid because I stated a fact. Lol you must be a Nole fan.
Which explains your IQ. Not much above a potatoe.

  41. BucEmUp 7 Says:

I think with his speed this guy will see as much time in the slot as he will on the outside.

Can we stop talking about Andrew Adams? He’s signed with Detroit a week ago.

    Goat,

Didn’t you realize that it is fashionable for JBF to whine about players….years after they have left the team……Michael Bennett, Donald Penn, Bradley McDougald, Matt Bryant…..to name a few.

    I’m with you…….”Get over it”

  43. Bird Says:

    Cgmaster

How does it feel to be a hypocrite. You are calling out people for insulting others and being “bullies.”

Dude. You just called me an embarrassment. 😂
    Gimme a break.

And you didn’t read my post. I said desean was a diva. He was part of problem here. . He was out to get his…he thought Jameis arm would get him further in career accomplishments. But to say he has no heart and is basically garbage ;blaming his failures here were his own fault. . Meanwhile Jameis gets a free pass yet again. Bet you weren’t saying that after first few games.

Look at desean numbers over the years
2 of his worst years were here in Tampa.
And consider Last year around 450 yards and 3 tds were with fitz which further make his numbers with Jameis look terrible.

He is the all time leader of td catches of over 60 yards. Ever in the nfl. More then moss more then rice. He is clearly none of those players. But he is not garbage. We wasted his talents here.

And I will take that one trick pony downfield td every time.
Did he even have one while he was here with Jameis. Not counting training camp?

Again. All his fault though. You are right.

  44. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Perriman is a bust.

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I was the ONLY one here saying they should have kept Bradley McDougald when he was let go. Anyone who says otherwise is rewriting history. Everyone attacked me for my opinion back then.

  46. rrsrq Says:

    Nope Buc Bonzai
Many of us, including me wondered why they let McDougal go and kept Conte. When he and Tandy played our safeties, that was the when the Bucs defense turned the corner that one blip on Mike Smith’s resume as a good defensive coordinator

  47. rrsrq Says:

Jameis will have all the weapons we need when we trade a fourth round pick for Duke Johnson. We will also have a draft day trade of Patrick Peterson for a second this year and a second next year. There will be more cuts.

  48. 1sparkybuc Says:

DJax was/is lazy. He doesn’t like to practice and team meetings are boring. That’s why he would be late or fall asleep in them. The issues were attitude and effort. Receivers don’t get to dictate who their QB is. He wanted Fitz. His replacement is younger, taller, faster, cheaper, and motivated. The only knock on him is the possibility of drops. Five pluses against one potential drawback that might be correctable. Nobody’s perfect. I can root for this guy. Attitude and effort count for a lot in my novel.

    Perriman is a bust.

Maybe you can say Perriman was a bust……but it remains to be seen if he will be a bust…..as far as I am concerned (given the money) Djax was a bust.

  50. Smashsquatch Says:

Very curious to see if Watson steps up year two. Have a feeling he’s a diamond in the ruff; although hard to know without seeing him on the field much. Add Perriman and Rojo to my list of players to keep an eye on in camp. I’m not ready to throw dirt on Rojo just yet, the dude is still very young. He just needs to add a little bulk, lower his center of gravity, and learn how to be a patient runner.
