Bucs Add Competition At Safety

March 18th, 2019

It sure smells now like the Bucs will avoid drafting a safety next month.

That makes sense since they drafted two last year.

Our beloved Buccaneers announced today they signed Kentrell Brice, who spent the last three years at safety with the Packers. Joe isn’t doing cartwheels, Brice is a backup/depth-caliber dude who has made 14 starts (10 last season) after entering the NFL as an undrafted rookie.

It’s a one-year Bucs contract, per various sources on Twitter, and that’s typical of the deals the Bucs have been signing since the free agency dinner bell rang last week.

Brice turns 25 in August and certainly seems like a player on the rise but it’s doubtful he has enough juice to grab a starting job from Jordan Whitehead or Justin Evans.

This signing also appears to confirm that fan favorite and free agent Chris Conte will have a new team in 2019.

OK with this…..if we can’t trust Bowles, we are in trouble…..and it certainly was Bowles, not Licht who made this call.

  2. GhostofSchiano Says:

    In Bowles we trust

  3. Bucnjim Says:

Situational player also known for hard hitting and short yardage coverage. Hasn’t done very well in deep coverage per critics.

  4. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

Conte has been stiff armed outta the league by Vance McDonald.

  5. 813bucboi Says:

i like the signing…..he has experience and has developed /improved each year since being undrafted…..at worse he’s depth….i could see bowles moving him and DB around and blitzing them….

good signing….make evans and whithead earn it…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  6. Doctor_berto Says:

    Cool. Now sign Burfict

Exactly. People dont realize most of the players signed and picked are done so by the coaching staff. I still think licht picked most of the players last year tho. He figured if smitty was gona sit back n wait on turnovers he better get alot of dlinemen. Too bad he couldnt of snagged reggie white and bruce smith cuz that d was all time terrible.
And if Licht trades back again this year and adds picks i can see him taking another safety. If not i dont see it

    Like it welcome Bro GoBucs

  9. Bucnjim Says:

    Jonathan,

That one play shows how our defense has played for the last decade! If you are not the aggressor then you get your face stepped on. Schiano was not a great coach but did try and instill aggressiveness only to be met with we can’t be mean to the other team attitude by some defensive players. Changing this attitude should be Arians number on goal and I think it will be.

  10. Easy Says:

“Personal foul number 29, horse collar tackle. 15 yards added to the end of the run. First down New Orleans.”

  11. Greg Says:

I didn’t know Joe considered Walmart a team.

  12. Bird Says:

So I saw some positive articles on him last week. Colts and Texans were interested which is good.

However , Just read this….And not saying PFF is all knowing but this was summary.

“According to Pro Football Focus, Brice allowed a passer rating of 150.1 on 29 throws into his primary coverage and missed 12 of 57 tackle attempts last season. In terms of overall grade, he ranked 87th out of 93 qualifying safeties in the NFL.”

    Ouch !

  13. Bucnjim Says:

Off topic I’ve met Arians a few times now and personally I’m impressed! His picture the Joes use gives him no justice. He’s in shape and doesn’t look nearly his age. He is a mans man and a tough dude that isn’t Messing around with hurt feelings. Freaking love the the toughness I think he will bring to this team. Change the culture BA and I think you will find the hidden talent we have on this roster.

  14. Bird Says:

So Bucs can focus on front 7 of defense in draft with top picks. Guys who will get after QB (devin white too?)

And get right guard with quality higher pick
    ———

On offense , either take slot like hunter renfrow or running back secret later round gem

Still waiting for them to sign Morris Claiborne . Bowles would know best and he won’t be expensive.

  15. Adrnagy Says:

This addition feels it will come down to competition for two stating safety positions in camp. DL, LB, CB,OL needs to be address on draft . There’s talent there but we need to get young and explosive.

  16. Adrnagy Says:

I’ll have to say … white in first, polite in second and third OL.

  17. Bird Says:

    Brice is a filthy athlete

    22 reps of 225 lbs
    Ran 4.44 forty time
42 inch vertical is extremely impressive.

Good competition pick at safety for sure.

  18. Mike Smith Says:

Conte is still on the team?

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Conte is a FA……

  20. Todd Says:

I have a client who owns one of the homes across from Packers Stadium…he’s a season ticket holder and is as nuts about GB as we are about the Bucs. He says Brice is HORRIBLE! “Watch the tape!”

Said he can hit, but is extremely slow to react and will be injured by the second game.

    Let’s see.

  21. Lord Cornelius Says:

I wish someone would write a book one day about who made what decisions behind the scenes.

It’s obvious the coaching staffs have had huge influence on FA and the draft historically.

I just wonder how much. It’s SUPER frustrating to me as a fan to know that only the Glazers really know whose input primarily drove what decisions.

They are ultimately not accountable to anyone. They can f*ck this franchise over and make millions and no one publicly will ever say “This person was why we drafted Ronald Jones” / etc.

In the end it’s on the owners I guess. We can always point our fingers at those idiots.

  22. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

LMAO! 87 out of 93? You forgot to mention players 88 thru 93 all played for the Bucs last year.

  23. Buc4evr Says:

    @Doctor_berto,

Burfict is a headhunter and would be penalized on every play. With being said, the intimidation factor alone be a reason to sign him….🤯

  24. Buccaneerscotty Says:

I like it! Do you like anything or anyone they are signing? What did you expect with our cap #’s? BA already said several times including tonight that he loves the core of this team!Devin White at #5 !!!!!! Go Bucs! Did you want us to resign Alexander for 55mill after a bad injury so you could complain about how they over spent? You can’t please everyone……

  25. Jamaal Stanley Says:

11ft 1in broadjump also Bird. 2nd only to Jalen Ramsey in that draft class. His 22 reps at his pro day would’ve been 2nd to some cat out Utah. Filthy athlete indeed bro.

    Post of the year 🏆

  27. TOM Says:

Another big signing by the Bucs. Super Bowl here we come. I see KC signed CB Breeland. A player I was hoping the Bucs would get. Rather had Breeland instead of Brice.

  28. Jamaal Stanley Says:

Todd ask homeboy what in the hell was wrong with Micha Hyde then??? You know a budding star young safety they didn’t see fit to keep in the building. Psst, you people man. Packers ain’t s$&@ because they have no owner and that QB has become a pri madona. They didn’t particularly give a s$&@ about defense up there.

  29. Cobraboy Says:

I WANT player turnover on this defense.

The quicker the Bucs shed the stinky, rotted skin of the Smith defense, the better the team will be for it.

BTW: I don’t blame Conte for poor play. Once again, the entire DBfield played a horrid scheme.

  30. Jamaal Stanley Says:

A yo Todd👋🏾,it’s me again☺️. I wondering if maybe while you’re asking your pro football @$$ homeboy about Micah Hyde can you also ask him why they gave Ha Ha Clinton-Dix his walking papers??? Seems like to me that organization doesn’t value safeties all that much.

  31. TexBuc Says:

now just concentrate on the front 7 in the draft.

  32. Destinjohnny Says:

We have the worst secondary because why??
    Jason after 5 drafts

  33. What the buc Says:

I agree with you guys about White. If the top 3 are gone we should draft him. When he was asked to pass rush he was tough to block. Why is no one talking about Jaylen Ferguson though? If he drops to us in the 2nd, we should run to the podium. We can get a guard in the 3rd.

  34. Stonedbuc Says:

Conte isn’t gonna make another team

  35. BuccOff Says:

Crickets….barely a camp hand, if that. Much ado bout nuthin. Next.

  36. cmurda Says:

Is Conte still technically on the Bucs roster? For the love of football, please tell me it ain’t so.

  37. adam from ny Says:

    #FreightTrainConte

when that loco motion hits ya real good

  38. Kyle Says:

@bird.. with his awful coverage skills and passer rating that he gives up, he will fit in well with the bucs gutless defense.

  39. SOEbuc Says:

Average veteran depth is exactly what this team needs.

  40. Brandon Says:

And don’t forget MJ Stewart… and the signing of Buchanon… not quite sure where he will play still.

  41. Monte Kiffin Says:

    Chris Conte is trash

  42. BigMacAttack Says:

Good speed and athleticism if nothing else. May be good on special teams.
