Bucco Bruce Is Going To Have Fun

March 28th, 2019

Bucs WRs make him smile.

When Bucco Bruce Arians first came on board as Bucs coach, he used to shake his head and sigh when thinking of the receivers he had on his roster, sort of like the way Joe reacts when he gawks at his poster of Rachel Watson.

Granted, one of those receivers is gone, malcontent wide receiver DeSean Jackson. But the cupboard is hardly bare with Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, O.J. Howard and Cam Brate to play around with as well as newly signed speedster Breshad Perriman.

At the NFL owners meetings this week in Arizona during the coaches breakfast, Arians was asked what players or position group he looked forward to working with.

The Mad Hatter didn’t waste any time gushing over the weapons he has in the passing game.

“The receivers and the tight ends,” Arians quickly responded. “They can go anywhere. And they are all mismatches somewhere.”

Does this sound like a guy who doesn’t know how to use a tight end? Every once in a while, Joe sees a Bucs fan on social media make the case for the Bucs to trade Brate because Arians doesn’t use tight ends much. Joe sure remembers seeing Heath Miller with the Steelers catch his fair share of passes when Arians was the offensive coordinator in Pittsburgh.

And it’s also fair to suggest Arians has never had a tight end as talented as Howard.

Joe seems to get the impression when Arians sits down for his evening cocktail(s), he’s drawing up passing plays on bar napkins on how to use Evans and Howard and Godwin to terrorize opposing defenses.

The Mad Hatter? That has to be the best descriptor you’ve ever come up with Joe. And that picture of BA is the one that slays me. Looks exactly like the little boy who just walked into the candy store and is told to take whatever he wants.

  2. Todd Says:

I love the reason why BA isn’t going to allow music at practice: “I don’t want that sh*t interfering with my TEACHING.”

    Not coaching, TEACHING.

Can you imagine how much LEARNING is going to accompany that teaching and how that will translate to the field of play?

I think we will ALL be learning a sh*t-tin this season.”

    Can’t wait.

  3. BucEmUp 7 Says:

Or maybe hes drawing up plays to pass the ball to the rbs..Something Koetter forgot was a legal play in the nfl

  4. Bob in Valrico Says:

There really hasn’t been much of a threat out of the backfield since Sims left, IMO We need a dynamic RB that do damage outside and catch screen passes.
Something else that might be holding up our screen game is good blocking.
That needs to be taught especially since we will longer have Hump for the go to WR screen.

  5. D1 Says:

    Bob in Valrico,

    True on both points.
Just putting this name out there as no one has mentioned him. Bryce Love.
He is rehabbing an injury and will be available, most likely, day 3. This is a guy who can take it to the house from anywhere on the field.

  6. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Imagine if licht did his HW and learned that ROJO is not a pass catching rb, then possibly the bucs draft the best rb still available darius guice but this is a licht failure again. It is encouraging that BA does need a versatile RB to get the engine running with the offense. I would really like to hear what BA legit thinks about this roster not the BS coach speak

  7. SCBucsFan Says:

We should throw more passes to Barber. You know 2 yard completions are so much more exciting than to yard runs.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Duthsty … You know as well as I do that ALL coaches only do ‘coach speak’. Joe praised Koetter early-on for being a refreshing change … for being candid and telling it like it is. But later that translated to ‘throwing players under the bus’. Didn’t matter whether those were underperforming players or not. Our politicians pretty much do the same thing. The wheels on the bus go round & round … Thump thump.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Evidence that every opportunity to trash “malcontent Djax” shows up again this morning….in the first two articles.
And, by the way, Djax isn’t the only receiver we lost. There is a guy named Adam Humphries who was used quite successfully.
How about some “Swaggy Baker” mentions…..or ASJackwagon?

Well, maybe because @Joe, Arians doesn’t use DOUBLE tight end sets more than 1/3 of the time. I’m sure that fan on social media knew that we had a much more dynamic primary TE in OJ. THAT’S why their is a ton of logic in trading Brate. OJ will control the middle, and any young cheaper TE could be had in the later rounds, to only go in 1/3 of the time for BA’s double TE sets.

  11. VFL98 Says:

Well, just hope were all smiling at the end of the season. Right now, it’s not looking like that’s going to happen.

  12. gilhealy Says:

    And Watson.

  13. Guzzie Says:

What’s the cap ramifications if we trade Brate, cause if the Pats offer a 3rd, that’s too good to pass up and the Pats have 12 picks

  14. Guzzie Says:

If Licht kept Brate with the intention to trade him during the draft, that’s a great move, paying a backup TE 7 million is more of a Licht stupid move,

  15. GrayBalls Says:

    @SeffnerSal
Brate’s contract is fully guaranteed. One more time…. Fully… Guaranteed. Let’s spell it out. F-U-L-L-Y. G-U-A-R-A-N-T-E-E-D. How is their more than one of y’all that doesn’t get this? If we keep him, $7M charge to the cap. If we trade him, $7M charge to the cap. Guess what happens if we cut him. SeffnerSal, can you answer this one? (Sal) “Nothing.” WRONG!!! Try $7M charge to the cap

  16. Bob in Valrico Says:

Defense, Funny “the kid in the candy store’ was the impression I had of Gruden when it came to free agents.Unfortunately some of them were already washed up.

    Really, GrayBalls?
    How is THEIR?

  18. 813bucboi Says:

most wanted brate traded because he’s making 7mil….not because BA wont use him….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!!

  19. Defense Rules Says:

GrayBalls … If a player is cut or traded, timing is everything. The salary Cap impact isn’t quite as simple as most seem to think it is. There’s a good article at https://www.behindthesteelcurtain.com/pittsburgh-steelers-nfl-features-news-blog-long-form/2016/3/5/11158958/nfl-101-how-cuts-retirements-and-trades-affect-the-salary-cap that explains it pretty well.

  20. RickinFt.Myers Says:

It’s not often I wholeheartedly aqree with Joe, but in this instance I do. Put Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Breshad Perriman, O.J. Howard, and Cam Brate on the field together and who you going to cover. Any one of those men is a danger to take it to the house on any play. Double down on Evans and Godwin, then Perriman and Howard can kill you or vice versa. Don’t double Evans and you better have a big corner to try and cover him. The list goes on and on. With Byron Leftwich and Bruce Arians designing the plays this could get interesting real quick.

  21. tmaxcon Says:

bruce will have fun…. oh he will have fun right up until week 4 and the nut-punch comes and by week 9 he will be looking for excuses health or otherwise to escape the black hole that is Tampa bay buccaneer football. There is more hope for an original Beatles reunion with Michael perv Jackson and Whitney Houston opening up than bucs competing at a nfl level.

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“Granted, one of those receivers is gone…” – Joe

Actually, two of them are gone. The one you forgot to mention was actually better than Desean.

    BucEmUp 7 Says
“Or maybe hes drawing up plays to pass the ball to the rbs..Something Koetter forgot was a legal play in the nfl”

I can’t stand it when someone makes a comment like this, obviously not knowing the facts. Koetter had pasd plays to RBs pretty much the entire time he was here.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    GrayBalls Says
“If we keep him, $7M charge to the cap. If we trade him, $7M charge to the cap.”

I’m against getting rid of Brate, and frankly, I feel only idiots would suggest it. But…it is clear you don’t get how trades work.

If Brate were traded to another team, that team assumes to responsibility of all guarantees in the player’s contract…unless the trade agreement states otherwise.

For example, a trade agreement might state that both teams split the guarantees in the first year…but that is uncommon.

  25. Lord Cornelius Says:

I’m drafting Jameis Winston / OJ Howard / Chris Godwin wherever I can in fantasy next year.

  26. Alanbucsfan Says:

Heard this same “ga-ga “ over passing game last year.
Won’t mean a thing if Jameis doesn’t eliminate turnovers and OLine can’t develop a running game

  27. DanBucsFan Says:

  28. DanBucsFan Says:

  29. Christopher Schiefen Says:

Why is everyone forgetting about the 6-4 Ivy League guy with the 4.3 speed who only didn’t play because Mr. “I can’t catch the ball unless it’s in my gut 5 yards away from the line of scrimmage” Humphries had already established himself.
