Mike Remmers & The Bucs (Again)

February 15th, 2019

Bucs fans would be traumatized if Caleb Benenoch started at right guard again (that’s no exaggeration, ‘fake news’ screamers), so general manager Jason Licht really would be wise to bring in strong veteran competition for second-year man Alex Cappa.

Yeah, perhaps the Bucs franchise tag left tackle Donovan Smith and draft a plug-and-play rookie guard in the third round. Maybe.

Regardless, it’s always great to be able to fill a hole and/or add depth in free agency to give yourself more flexibility in the draft.

Enter Mike Remmers, an interesting undrafted journeyman who broke through later in his career as an excellent right tackle for the Panthers. That led him to score big with the Vikings in free agency after the Panthers’ Super Bowl run. For chunks of the Greg Schiano era in Tampa (2012 and 2013) Remmers was on the Bucs’ practice squad and the roster, though he never played in a game.

In 2017, the Vikings surprised the NFL and moved Remmers to right guard to close the season. He started there all of 2018 and was underwhelming.

There’s speculation (and desire) out of Minnesota that Remmers will be a salary cap casualty soon to shave off the nearly $6 million due him in 2019.

Remmers intrigues Joe. First, he turns 30 in April but has very low mileage on his tires, just 71 NFL starts, including seven playoff games. Also, he’s spent most of his career on very physical teams with demanding head coaches. The guy would not melt under Bruce Arians’ whip.

And Joe’s going to wonder aloud whether Remmers might have needed a full season to adjust to guard.

The guy didn’t play guard in college and he admitted he was dealing with a real learning curve midway through last season. We do know Remmers proved he can play right tackle well in the NFC South. That makes him a potential replacement for Demar Dotson with versatility.

The Bucs are likely to have three supremely well paid guys on their offensive line, Smith, Ryan Jensen and Ali Marpet. The other two starters simply won’t be paid big-time cash.

Remmers might be the kind of mid-money guy that won’t excite Bucs fans but could be a fit at right guard or tackle.

Would like to see one of the two (RG or RT) be an older vet added in FA. Remmers, Iupati, Levitre, Saffold, etc might fit the bill for the right price.

  2. Season Is Over Says:

I would rather have a GM that can draft players to develop.

THE OWNERS OF THE WORST WINNING PERCENTAGE IN NFL HISTORY DESRVE NEGATIVE FANS AND EVERY OUNCE OF CRITICISM THEIR LOSING ARSES RECEIVE!!!!!

i see glazers have trained you to accept and love losing well… sad very sad….

I don’t care what you think of my name. It has been the same for two years. What kind of fan would attack another fan for being a fan? That is normally a job for the Winstopolgists.

  6. JimmyJack Says:

Season is Over You are right to blame Licht for drafted players. Developement is not his department. That falls on coaching.

  7. JimmyJack Says:

    My plan.

    Sign-D.Smith 2 years.

Sign- Two journeyman OL. 1 guard one tackle.

Draft 2 late round OL for developement. 1G 1T.

  8. Not there yet Says:

I’d be down with any plan that puts the heat on the starters from 2018 including remmers. O line free agents are never sexy picks in the draft or free agency unless they are first round picks or being made highest paid player like Jensen. Last years starting guard would be a waste of a practice squad spot let alone the 53 man roster

  9. Pickgrin Says:

If we are going 30+ at Guard in free agency – I’d rather have Iupati for about the same $.

  10. Darin Says:

You guys and your worst fans in the league nonsense. Its called worst people in the world. The ones always complaining and whining. Every team has them, every city, country etc. It takes all types.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We need to draft a guard or tackle in one of the first two rounds this year……we also need a FA G……
It is time to start with some serious upgrades….I’d like to see a franchise of Smith and dump him after a year if he doesn’t significantly improve.

  12. Destinjohnny Says:

Our draft was rated 30th this year

2 things stick out that Joe said about this guy..1st was 7 playoff games ” experience ” 2nd is that he started on physical teams…i would like nothing more than Cappa to be a dominating stud of a right tackle moving forward..but if he still needs time to develop , why not remmers!?…we also need a right tackle in the worst of ways as Dotson has never really impressed me in the run blocking and has slipped in play for pass blocking..if we sign remmers and plug him in at right guard and draft a quality right tackle in rounds 4 through 7 then I think we might be able to have a better overall line…our line last year and the 2 years before have not been very good if you ask me…time to really focus on how to get a quality starting 5..i did not like at all how coach k would shift his guys in and out of the starting line up and how he kept moving market all over the damn place..that just tells me he had no clue what he was doing there and it’s about damn time we have really good coaching across the board..i pray Arians has a big say in this draft because I know for a fact he knows what he is looking for and what he wants…i will not lose any sleep over that part ! go b ucs!

  14. ButtMonkey Says:

The bald faced truth is, until BA and staff have completely evaluated the roster and has had time to work with the players, no one really knows what this team needs personnel wise. We may have our new RG and RT already here. Considering that at least some of the coaching was minimally subpar and possibly downright laughable last year and the years prior, we won’t have any clue what we have until BA gets his hands on them. I’ll take BA at his word, when he says there is a lot of talent here. Don’t allow the ineptitude of Koetter and company to cloud your judgement on the players. You can’t blame both. Players play to the level they’re coached

Our draft was rated 30th this year

That’s actually higher than I thought it would be…

  16. Trench War Says:

I think Remmers would make a great bridge gap at RT or even give Cappa competition for the starting RT job. At least being with Carolina, and Minnesota he understands the running game better. We need to find him a line mate at RG. Remmers evidently is not a guard.

  17. JustaBucfan Says:

Remmers is a real possibility for sure

  18. Tvan1011 Says:

Lupati is older with more injuries and miles. Joe can you lose tmax the guy isnt cute anymore just bad for your comment section.

  19. Joe in Michigan Says:

The only thing I know about Remmers is I have friends who are Carolina fans and they’ve complained about how terrible he is (kinda like Bucs fans with D Smith). I’d rather ride with Demar Dotson another year and draft his eventual replacement.

  20. RustyRhinos Says:

IS THIS FAKE NEWS JUST THE NEWS REPORTED WITH ALTERNATIVE FACTS? Asking for a friend.

We need Oline depth and a starting G and T (offer Smith a 9 mill 3 year deal with 18 guaranteed) We should be looking at seasoned veterans Oline players under 30 please. Remmers would be a good choice, short term.

    So perfectly said…
and then you had to go and bring Jameis in to it. (Winstopologists)
WHY? – LOL, what the hell did Jameis have to do with it?

    Anyway, still perfectly said.

  22. SOEbuc Says:

He sounds good for RT. That’s a major hole needed to be filled cus Dot’s age is finally getting to him year after year. These are the kind of depth and rotation players we need more of. Vets that have gas still left in the tank and have experience playing on good teams. All good teams have this. They should get a top-notch OG in the second round after a DT in the first. possibly RT in the third. Stack the trenches!

“Our draft was rated 30th this year”

By who? I know everyone was at least giving us B+ after the draft. And you have to take in consideration that these rookies were also being coached by a DC that almost led us to worst defense in history. I guarantee better things for those guys this year, and not just because of the coaching, but because I’m hoping and thinking they will be put in the right position in the scheme i.e. No Davis and Stewart playing 12 yards back.

  24. StoutGospel Says:

Go research Matt Paradis. Age 29, outta Denver. Played mostly Center in his career, likely can easily handle RG as most Centers can. Graded out as Top 5 pass blocking Center in league in 2018. Before freak broken foot in August 2018, had started every game of his career. As of Feb. 8, 2018, update is he is completely healed and cleared for all offseason activties. At 6’6″ 305 lbs, that’s the quality of RG makeup we need, if picked in free agency. And Paradis wouldn’t cost nearly as much as Saffold.

    Go get it done Licht!!

  26. TOM Says:

I am still against giving big bucks to Smith. Rated a below average tackle. No one mentions the OL canidates we already have. Liedtke, Wister, the rookie from Temple (forget his name). Since it was mentioned that we had Remmers at one time on PS. Maybe there’s a diamond in the rough.

  27. Joe in Michigan Says:

Is Remmers really an upgrade over Dotson? Maybe Dotson is done, I don’t know. Or maybe he was playing hurt. Remmers will be 30 when the season starts, so I don’t see the upside. Yes, he’s a few years younger than Dot, as Anthony Collins was a few years younger than Donald Penn.

  28. Go Bucs 72 Says:

Kaleb Cannotblock is terrible, anyone would be better.

  29. Joe in Michigan Says:

Remmers admittedly struggled at guard last year. We already had one of those in Cannotblock (nice one).

  30. proudbucsfan Says:

did anyone notice how Liedtke started for D.Smith in the pre season? He was absolutely dominant. We should give him a shot on the right side. I believe Kappa would be better at right tackle than right guard.
