  1. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Wrong side of 30, lost a step last year, didn’t make ProBowl and you want to pay this guy $13M. Draft his replacement in top 10. I still think they are going to trade him between now and Day 2 of draft.

  2. Bird Says:

    Was thinking he could restructure.

However , he has 3 years remaining (including upcoming )
Hard to do when that is case. If he had next year only it would be possible. He is due 12 next year and 10 after that. Ouch. Even more reason to draft Quinen Williams if there.

I guess they are paying full price ?
13 mil is a lot for mediocrity
And I like McCoy. Barely makes top 10 fav players. Maybe 10. Just not for that price.

  3. Broodlaw Says:

Still has a use to the team but not at 13 Million that is way too high for his production output. Cut it down to 7-7.5 Mil otherwise see what you can get for him, no guarantee we’ll get a good iDL in the draft especially since Edge is really rich this draft class.

  4. OneBuc55 Says:

Not a fan but McCoy, in a new scheme he’ll be fine ..

  5. VFL98 Says:

Try to sign him for a lot less otherwise trade him NOW. To many younger guys out there that can perform better than he has. They pay him that much money I guarantee you his performance will continue to decline.

  6. D-Rome Says:

Voted no on *this* specific question.

  7. Joeypoppems Says:

I picked Not Sure. $13 mil is a lot for him, but if they did move him it would create another hole on a roster with a lot of holes and its no guarantee that the guy they choose to fill that hole works out.

At this point im kind of just hoping that a lot of guys who we as fans have questions about will just get a bump from the new coaching staff. Guys like Donnovan Smith, GMC, the young DBs, and of course Jameis

  8. AlteredEgo Says:

    Not sure was my click…..
    Restructure 2 years 13 million…

  9. Loyaltotheend Says:

    Restructure or trade

Can’t see another team paying him 13 million for 5-6 sacks 3-4 penalties (offsides) and missing his 1-2 games

Lot of money for a leader of a bad d year in and year out

  10. Pickgrin Says:

Keep McCoy? Yes (unless another team is willing to give up a 3rd rd pick in trade – then I would say trade him at 31 years old)

Pay him $13M this year? No

So that becomes a “No” vote for your poll.

  11. Bill1949 Says:

Unloading McCoy does not create another hole to fill. It creates 13M that can be used elsewhere. Take that 13M and get Barr from Minnesota. The defense instantly improves and the overall team is better. Simply cut him loose.

  12. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

No. But it follows the logic of keeping a GM who wins roughly 1/3 of his games. Having said that…if that’s how Bucco Bruce ended up here…then so be it.

  13. SteveK Says:

    “No”

I’d rather see $13 million for Lev Bell, or a pass rusher that shakes free: dee ford or Demarcus Lawrence.

I am done after the MNF apology to Big Ben, which by admitting fault drew a flag and contributed towards our loss.

  14. Buc believer Says:

    Hell NOOOOO!!!!

  15. PaulW Says:

I would keep McCoy for one primary reason: leadership in the locker room (I have NEVER heard his name being toxic). The secondary reasons are 1) relatively good (just not great) pressure DT against the run and pass, 2) hazards of bringing in different talent for DT that may not jell with the DL.

The biggest knock is that contract. If McCoy is willing and if the ownership/front office can wrangle it to redo the contract to cap-friendly numbers that still pays him well, this should work.

  16. Buc for 30 Says:

I think it is ridiculous to say Gerald MCoy does not deserve to be on this team. He is still a top 10 DT in the NFL. He is a known commodity. You maybe get a 3 or 4th round pick that is still unknown. You then are creating another hole that you must fill. He is good guy. So is JJ watt. so is Fitzmagic. If that’s a problem then thats a problem. He is paid the going rate. The man is every bit the player JPP is and still demands the attention of every team we play.

Actually…..we could restructure and so should GMC……none of the money is guaranteed…..he could go for less with a guarantee…..and should.

No guarantee means as a FA or even in a trade he would be subject to restructure talks.

  18. SB Says:

I LOVE GMC but I think if we are going to a 3-4 then Vea is the obvious NT with JPP the obvious RDE. Gerald is Anything but a LDE. 13mil to be a rotational player is not wise.

  19. Defense Rules Says:

Keeping GMC is a smart move given all our other ‘issues’ on defense. Paying him $13 mil this year trumps that though … dumb.

  20. Not there yet Says:

The people have spoken. Ring of honor lock and a very good player and also dominant for a few years despite the horrible coaches walking the halls of one buc place but having said that he doesn’t have the mental makeup to help this team make a playoff run. He’s hungry for it in the off-season and that’s when he talks the most but during the season during the game he strinks.

Personally I think we should draft his replacement and restructure, at this stage of his career he’s only good in passing downs, he’s never been great against the run anyway. Keep him fresh with less reps and he may be more effective

  21. RODNEY J ALLEN Says:

Move more of this years to next year n year after n turn some into an incentives bonus at end of the season

  22. martinii Says:

IMO Gerald will do well under BA and Bowls. Second year with JPP and Nassib at DE will give him the much needed help he needs, not to mention the progress Vea made at the end of the season. Other than JPP and Nassib the Buc’s have not fared well With Edge Rushers and DE”s in FA. Williams is not going to fall to 5 so I am leary how you replace a 6 time Pro Bowler in his prime. Not one Buc player is suggesting his removal and that speaks volumes to his worth. I agree, get Honey Badger.

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Well, it’s not my money.

However…it bothers me that no one has taken the time to confirm this claim. Some reporter says it is the case…but no one else has confirmed it with the organization?

That just seems fishy to me.

For all we know, this reporter was just told the Bucs WANT to keep GMC…but he was not told that it will be up to whether McCoy restructures.

So I had to choose ‘not sure’ simply for that matter.

  24. Buc1987 Says:

    Buh.

    Bye.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

People are also forgetting that by not restructuring, they can release him at any time. This year or next.

So the CAN draft his replacement.

  26. Smashsquatch Says:

No. I think GMC is a nice guy. I also think GMC is injury prone, and usually sits out or plays through it defore quickly disappearing on the field. When he is healthy, he plays well for about a half. Usually shows a little gas after halftime too. When you need him the most in the 4th quarter with the game on the line, poof, he disappears again. I sure hope this “news” of him returning at $13 mil is an attempt to drum up some trade interest prior to the draft. We need fresh blood and a new attitude on the dline. It’s been horrid during GMC’s eleven years as a Buc. I can’t blame this all on GMC; although, the great ones do elevate everyone else around them and seem to will their teams to victory when it matters most.

    “Was thinking he could restructure.

Except that he has no dead cap space from here on out.

There is absolutely no way you can cut him down to half what he is making now. He can easily get $10m on the open market. Easily.

Really, $13m is not so much as people make out. Compare it to the franchise amount of – $13.939 million for Defensive Tackle. So he’s making nearly a mission less than the franchise tag amount for his position.

    Is he worth it?

    Well, maybe.

Truthfully, I think $13m is too much for anyone but QBs. But that’s just me.

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Smashsquatch Says
“When you need him the most in the 4th quarter with the game on the line, poof, he disappears again.”

That is absolutely not true. Up until last year, McCoy was the hardest working player on the defense. And he made late game plays all the time.

Last year was different, but all players have the occasional bad year, and fans seem to not account for that. JPP has been up and down his whole career. He;s still an excellent player.

I would prefer to trade McCoy, provided he agrees to a new contract with his next team we should be able to get good value. But I am not opposed to keeping him another year either.

  32. Alstott up the gut Says:

This is when I wish the draft was prior to free agency. Depends on who is available at 5 would increase or decrease my hope to maintain McCoy. So with that not an option, my hope is to keep McCoy but that he restructures to free up cap space.

  33. Buc believer Says:

Buc Bonzai… all players have bad years… but last year was supposed to be Gerald’s BEST year because as the apologists liked to say he FINALLY had line help and he was going to shine! Instead he had as you say a down year and he needs to be given the benefit of the doubt. Funny how things ALWAYS get twisted into Geraldine’s favor.

  34. Kobe Faker Says:

“Restructure his contract with attached bonuses

7 million base with incentives that can total 13 mill if they are achieved

**Living the last 7 years with only a disability check, foodstamps and a Obama phone, Kobe Faker has become a free market, conservative, traditional values Republican”

    Kobe Faker

  35. JimmyJack Says:

Forget the contract. Truth is we have plenty of dead weight we can clear the free up cap space.

What I don’t like is Gerald being the face of this defense. I want a new mentality and that means new leadership. Intangibles are what matter most to me and McCoy just aren’t got them.

  36. DooshLaRue Says:

    Amen JJ!

  37. FootballPerson Says:

I believe this was a good move. Gerald McCoy is still a guy teams have to scheme for and coaches will still try to double team. Even as he’s “lost a step,” he still led the team in QB hits and managed the same production of sacks (which on a better DL meant those sacks are more meaningful). Factor in Vita Vea’s improvement and you’ve got opposing coaches sleepless on what to do with their game plans. All this talk about a move to a 3-4 defense, according to Pewterreport it’ll be a 3-4 under (similar to what the Rams run) meaning Gerald will still be at the 3T spot. There’s no better option in free agency and you can’t put your trust on a rookie (other than Quinnen Williams but lets be reasonable, he wont be there, but even if we end up drafting him, Gerald will be a great help for the rook then eventually he’ll be taken over and it’ll be the Q & Vita show). Let’s also be honest, if they cut McCoy, you just know he’ll be signing with the Saints, do we really want to see that?

  38. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

We lost all those games with him.

He did not make a difference.

But his 13m more on the cap can make a difference.

  39. MadMax Says:

Nope! Absolutely not unless he’s reworking the $$$. If he is and we’re telling him this is a prove it year, then im ok with it. But I doubt thats happening…probably his last year with us.

  40. DB55 Says:

    Def Rules

McCoy IS our “issues” on defense

  41. ATrain Says:

Not even Joe would say keep GMC for 13 million

  42. Dave Says:

I like McCoy…. but not at that salary with the needs they have at both lines and DBs.

I missed the part over the past week where they’re keeping him with the full salary. Why is restructuring not an option?

  43. BuccaneEric75 Says:

There’s no trade market for GMac at 13 million. It’s keep or cut. After all of these losing seasons he has endured here, why would GMac stay here and take less money when he can take less money and be on a contending team?

  44. Pa Privateer Says:

With better coaching, attacking scheme and play calling, all of the players will look better.

  45. IBelieveinJameis Says:

If we could get him for about half the $13M, then yes keep. That isn’t happening so cut. GMac has had some great years in Tampa but it’s time to move on. I’d be fine with a restructure and one year ‘prove it’ deal but at 31, what else is he really going to prove?

We can get someone 3-5 years younger with a higher ceiling or even two solid guys for that same price. GMac is a great community guy so I wish him the best wherever he goes and hope he gets paid and gets on a winner. It’s just almost assuredly not going to work here.

  46. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Shouldn’t the poll question be rephrased?
