The Harold Goodwin File

January 8th, 2019

Former Arizona OC Harold Goodwin.

With the hiring of Bruce Arians to succeed Dirk Koetter as Bucs coach seemingly imminent, Joe’s going to take a look at another former Arians coordinator who could find his way to the Bucs.

That would be Harold Goodwin, Arians’ offensive line coach and offensive coordinator with the Cardinals.

On face value, Goodwin doesn’t seem like an offensive coordinator. He’s been a line coach for his entire coaching career dating back to Eastern Michigan 20 years ago.

With Arians being such an offensive guy and there being no question who ran the Cardinals offense when Arians was in the desert, one has to wonder if Goodwin was a figurehead coordinator, sort of like what Bill Muir was for Chucky with the Bucs. No one doubted who called the plays despite Muir’s offensive coordinator title.

After Arians left the Cardinals and there was a coaching change in Phoenix, Goodwin, curiously, has been out of work. This makes Joe wonder if Goodwin was such a good coach, why would 32 teams not want his services or even a decent college program? Or was Goodwin just taking a paid year off?

It sure seems Arians is loyal as can be. Ever since he took over as offensive coordinator with the Steelers in 2007, Goodwin has been by Arians’ side including a one-year stop with the Colts in 2012.

Not knowing Arians’ plans, Joe would be happy if Arians kept current Bucs offensive coordinator Todd Monken (it sure seems like the two are kindred spirits when it comes to passing) and brought Goodwin on board to coach the offensive line.

Joe thinks it is safe to assume most Bucs fans would be OK if the Bucs try a different voice on the offensive line other than George Warhop.

A few weeks ago I was OK with the idea of hiring an actual pirate to run this team at this point.

So yeah I’m OK with trying a different voice on O-line lol.

  2. Fartman Says:

I think it would be cool if we kept Monken

Time for the old pre-2018 blood to go. Warhop, Hoke, etc all need to be shown the door. I dont care if we become Arizona East, just bring in some new coaches and a different voice.

    Amen to that Joe!

  6. kyle Says:

the current offensive line is a hot mess and has been for some years. We have overpaid a couple guys that didnt play up to their contract, as well as starting a guard that should be playing in the new american football league or whatever. We have a serious issue evaluating running backs and offensive linemen. I hope the new staff can get it right.

  7. Deminion Says:

Can we just have better rb screens and more bunch formations please!

  8. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Great post, JOE. — I tend to agree that it would be great for Arians to keep Monken here as OC (if the Jets dont nab him), but yes absolutely bring in Goodwin as OL coach.

  9. 813bucboi Says:

what about bowles?…heard he’s interviewing for the redskins DC job….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…#KRISISTHEPICK!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

I like Kris Richard, but how exactly is he going to fix Jameis?

  11. German Buc Says:

I have a bottle of Champagne ready to hear the announcement of a new offensive line coach. It’s as important as the HC.

  12. Anonymous Says:

Tampa should keep Monkens as the OC. That would be the perfect person to take over as the next head coach once this thing gets turned around and Bruce leaves bc he is up in age.

  13. Dewey Selmon Says:

The icing on the cake is the coaches that BA will bring to his staff. There is a chance Kingsbury might get rid of Leftwich if he wants to run his own offense in AZ.

  14. 813bucboi Says:

    firstdown

by giving him a defense and run game…..

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!…#KRISISTHEPICK!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  15. Asdf Says:

Lol why are people so enamored with Monken? His hands are on Jameis’s development (or lack thereof) just as much as Koetter

  16. Joe Says:

Lol why are people so enamored with Monken? His hands are on Jameis’s development (or lack thereof) just as much as Koetter

    Hardly.

  17. __TGH__ Says:

    Agreed. Also keep Buckner

  18. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^ agreed on that one, JOE.

  19. Nick2 Says:

Warhop has had his ups and downs but overall we need more run blocking and whether that was Koetter’s lapse of reason Marpet moving to center was the end of our good running game. Why we cant get back to where we were when they were opening up huge holes for Doug Martin in Jameis’s first year I can only wonder. A new O-Line coach will be a breath of fresh air. Pound the rock!!

  20. Lubby Smith Says:

Of course we need Harold Goodwin, along with Bruce Arians, Byron Leftwich, Todd Bowles, Steve Wilks, and every other former Arizona coach we can get our hands on.

  21. German Buc Says:

Oh, and btw, a new ST coordinator, please!

  22. TB559920 Says:

Monken wouldn’t be my first choice as OC, but he did a good job his first year helping Evans take control of the dropsy

  23. 813bucboi Says:

    great!!!

then we can be the tampa bay cardinals…..

Ruggyup puts his own name in the mix for Halftime Entertainment Coordinator, not reporting to the HC but right up there with him on the Table of Organization.

So will we be the Tampa Bay Cardinals? East coast AZ Cards? Bring back the creamsciscles but instead of Bucco Bruce put Arians on the helmet with that ridiculous hat of his.

  26. Broy34 Says:

Can we stop with the fix jameis stuff. Jameis fixed himself when he said f u dirk. Bench me for throwing picks then tell me to keep throwing it deep. Didn’t have a single forced throw after being named starter. Arians is here to bring Winston to the next level and fix the franchise not to “fix” Winston. Winston is fine. Being better is the goal

  27. Broy34 Says:

Nick2- because a man named Logan mankins retired and was placed by Caleb. We were better off trotting out four lineman. Atleast then the four guys would know nobody is blocking the left side d tackle

  28. Broy34 Says:

  29. Buxfan Says:

Living in Cleveland for a spell. George Warhop wasn’t liked there by fans. He was a awful coach for a really bad Cleveland team. He comes to Tampa and proves he’s a trash coach.
THIS TEAM REALLY NEED TEACHERS OF TECHNIQUE. NEED MORE TEACHERS LIKE BRENTSON BUCKNER.

  30. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I’d take a paid year off, but that’s just me! Lol!

  31. SOEbuc Says:

    BA

  32. Bobby M. Says:

I like the idea of grooming Monkens to take over but reality is if we succeed, everyone will be after him. He’s getting serious consideration as it is. Monken will be a good HC. He has the “my way or the highway” mentality that Koetter somewhat lacked when it came to reminding the players who was boss.

  33. OneBucPerson Says:

Here is why I’m concerned about this, BA has already said that he’s not going to call plays to avoid the stress. If Goodwin is the guy that would mean for the first time in his career as an OC he’ll have to call plays the entire season, and he hasn’t done that. Much rather prefer an experienced play caller as our OC as opposed to a wildcard.

  34. canadianbucsfan Says:

  54. Chris Says:

Clyde Christensen as QB coach…. doesn’t get any better than that.

  55. Kobe Faker Says:

“Monkens Playcalling was the 1st 3 games the rest was all under Koetters schemes

    no LOS slant/pick/rub plays
    no motion
hardly no wheel routes and well designed rb screens
AND HARDLY NO SHORT, INTERMITANT, DEEP CROSSING PATTERNS

Klueless pass design was ancient and suked

Jamis Winston never QBed under the true playcalls and scheme from Monk”

    Kobe Faker

  56. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Personally, I hope Monken stays.

  68. Buc4life7878 Says:

Bruce Arians new head coach! 4 year deal.

  69. cmurda Says:

It’s basically being reported as a done deal. I just hope we don’t see another Jeff Tedford scenario because I’m sofa king pumped to see what Arians can do here. As for George Warhop, please keep that man as far away as possible from One Buc. Any coach involved with special teams should be in Warhop’s plane trip out of here.

  70. VaTom Says:

Times reporting Arians has been officially offered the job. FWIW.

  71. Chacho Bucco Says:

It appears Kris is losing momentum in all the Head coaching races. He would be great as the d coordinator! Lot of young guys on board in defensive secondary would benefit immensely! It would also give the shot for the Bucs to grab Earl Thomas which would provide a great insertion of experience and talent on the field to also help the defensive backs get up to speed!

  72. Pat Says:

    Woo hoo

  73. Todd Says:

Why is Joe Bucs Fan getting scooped by every other media outlet regarding BA’s 4-year deal?!

    I can’t believe it.

  74. Ed Says:

Bucco Bruce Arians new Bucs HC now breaking news

    Goodwin Running Game Coordinator

    Leftwich Passing Game Coordinator

A blast from the past: Clyde Christiansen QB Coach

So Clyde will teach Jameis how to run up the middle as he did so often with Dunn and Alstott and Leftwich will teach Jameis how to shorten up his throwing motion.

OK, Leftwich low blow, but not sure why Christianson is still in NFL. Where’s Mike Shula when you need him?

  75. BucEmUp Says:

I would like it if Monken and Buckner stuck around

  76. Dave Pear Says:
