“We Wanted To Attack”

January 5th, 2019

“We come out firing, Dirk.”

So who wants to hear some sweet music from Bruce Arians?

Joe believes this will help soothe Bucs fans a little by letting them know one small way the heir apparent to Dirk Koetter is different from the former Bucs head coach.

When that coin is tossed to start the game, Arians wants the damn ball immediately.

“I always wanted the football. We wanted to attack,” Arians said on CBS earlier this year when talking about coin tosses.

With a chuckle in his voice, the then-retired head coach explained that he wanted his offense with the ball first unless he was starting a second- or third-string quarterback.

Koetter said analytics (from where?) showed it was better for NFL teams to defer and get the ball to start the third quarter.

Of course, there’s no true right or wrong way, and leaguewide data is not necessarily Bucs-relevant. It sure seemed like Koetter should have been taking the ball first because he had a sorry defense for two consecutive season — and Jason Licht just told everyone that the Bucs had one of the best offenses in NFL history.

Also, Koetter often said his offense would stress starting fast during its game-week of practice, so it felt odd to decline a chance to take the rock to open a game and set the tone.

With Arians in Bucs colors, that won’t happen.

    heir apparent eh?

Until that press conference comes and I see a pewter Kangol atop his head, it’s still a a Bucs life for me

  2. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Yup, let’s not jinx this Joe. The Bucs could f$ck up a wet dream!

  3. SOEbuc Says:

Did Koetter ever make a right decision the entire time he was a HC here? Not that I can recall.

  4. Bucs Fan Since ‘76 Says:

If you believe the only missing piece to us becoming a playoff contender is the right head coach, then Arians is an excellent choice. If you don’t believe that then this is yet another half-ass Glazer effort to make a splash hire without a long term plan in place. Which camp are you in?

  5. Buc believer Says:

@Bucs fan since 76…. I truly believe that this is an effort by the Glazer gang to justify the raising of ticket prices for next year. I wish I could say we are close but from everything I see I can’t say that.

  6. SOEbuc Says:

    BFS ’76

Been saying it has been bad coaching for years. We’ve been building through the draft with talented young guys (#1 Jameis Winston) that haven’t had ANY good HC or assistants to teach them the game. If it turns out to be BA, the guy can put together a hell of a coaching staff.

  7. slimricky Says:

If joes right this far out that it’s arians I will read this for as long an I’m a Bucs fan

  8. AlteredEgo Says:

So are you saying the Bucs go OL with the first 2 picks…..I’ve been watching Quieton Nelson all game even before the announcers a few minutes ago….what a brawler !

  9. Bird Says:

Just watching quinton Nelson dominate as a rookie.

So glad we didn’t win last game

May have to go “get” Greedy with 5th pick. Shut down corner

  10. Alan Says:

I’m so tired of rooting for a franchise that sucks at everything we’ve in post about a coach that hasnt even signed yet… sigh…

  11. Darin Says:

Just go back and watch the bucs vs cards game from last season. He attacked up 24-0, deep ball baby. . Made Dirk actually try to score n not run run pass punt the rest of the game. He is a real HC. Would love the hire.

  12. Alan Says:

I am so tired of rooting for this pathetic franchise we even post about a coach that’s not even signed yet. We can’t do anything right and we count our chickens before they’re hatched

  13. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Bird

Then perhaps the Bucs will listen and lose every game next year.
I feel certain you’d feel pleased with that draft pick.

  14. Dapostman Says:

I believe deferring to the second half is always the right choice. The less time on the clock the more I want the ball. So if you give me the choice of do I want the ball with 60 mins left or 30 I’ll take 30. Not to mention the daily double chance of scoring twice around the halftime break. To each his own I guess.

  15. Alan Says:

I am so fed up with this franchise the last time I was happy was starting week 1 defending our Superbowl championship. It’s been down hill since then. We can’t do anything right and now on this site that I do love we are posting as if we have Arians? He hasn’t even signed yet! What if the Browns call him? We all know he wanted to go there. Please don’t count the chickens before they hatch!

  16. TexBuc Says:

I believe the Bucs lack physicality and toughness the exact reason the ATL Falcons fired Mike Smith. If we shore up our offensive and defensive lines we will be a playoff team with the right coaching.

  17. SOEbuc Says:

This was a quote from a while ago, but BA maybe hasn’t seen what the Bucs defense does in the second half though. Ughhhhhhh…top priorty.

  18. OneBucPerson Says:

Quick question for anyone watching the Colts-Texans game, Tyrann Mathieu is a free agent after this season. Anyone else have any interest in him coming here to be our new FS, and we kick Evans out to SS? I think he’d be pretty interested in playing under Arians (and presumably Bowles) again.

  19. rrsrq Says:

Does the Colts winning a wild card game after finishing with only a couple of wins last year and having a first year coach offer any hope Bucs fans

  20. Joe In Michigan Says:

I understand the talk about Greedy, we need a CB badly…His teammate Devin White, although we are strong at LB, this guy would be the tone setter on our defense, a defense that hasn’t been physical in a long time. Devin White, to me, is the young Hardy Nickerson the Bucs defense needs more than anything. That’s if we can pick up a good CB, somehow.

  21. SteveK Says:

The Colts have Quentin Nelson. I so wanted him or Chubb. Just missed them w a meaningless win in week 17.

  22. TexBuc Says:

I believe Honey Badger is a priority this offseason for the Texans.

  23. BucEmUp Says:

Im going to cry if its not Bruce

  24. SteveK Says:

    Joe,

The 5th pick in the draft will either be a OT, or DLJonah Williams, Greg Little, Ed Oliver, Quinnen Williams, or Nick Bosa. Build the trenches with a premium talent.

  25. Tval Says:

Gotta go OL, Steve. Look no further, for the benefits of Arians, than Frank Reich rejuvenating Luck. Then he supports a ?, in Luck in taking guard Nelson, early, and a STUD LB FROM A TIIIINY COLLEGE later on.

  26. Stanglassman Says:

I remember someone arguing that a Gaurd top five was too high because they couldn’t make much of a impact. I’d be embarrassed had a wrote that after watching the colts play this year.

  27. Dave Says:

The Bucs have been left at the alter more than once before. So this isn’t done until ink hits that contract.

  28. Stanglassman Says:

5th pick-The Alabama OT and move Smith to RT if he likes it or not or CB Greedy. Bosa won’t be there.

I just starting studying the draft but that’s where I’m at now.

  29. Stanglassman Says:

That song “I’m a-gonna kick somebody’s a-s-s” keeps going though my mind.

If you haven’t watched A Football Life, Bruce Arians. Go watch it now on YouTube.

  30. JJV Says:

Good point Dave. Hoping and keeping the faith. Bruce Arians is the real deal. This could finally be the turning point for team. May not be immediate but the foundation and culture change will begin. Winning and respect will soon follow.

  31. Rod Munch Says:

I’ve always heard you defer, that it gives you a higher chance at having an extra opportunity with the ball. But I don’t know where that data comes from. But the game isn’t all analytics, sometimes you need to just have a feel for a game and know your defense is God awful and you need to get the ball and try to put up points first so every time your offense gets the ball it’s not starting down 7, and if they don’t score right away by the second time they have the ball they’re down by 14.

  32. Buc believer Says:

Watching the Cowgirls and Sea Hags game and they just anounced Jr. Sleezy!!! That dude needs to be investigated for steeling from the Bucs!! F..CK u Sleezy!

  33. Wesley Says:

Always prefer to defer, let the nervous jittery offense take the ball first.

  34. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Arians is the type of man this team needs. He will instill a light in these guys that will last longer then him which will bring this team to to be the best! Superbowl bound! Go watch documentaries on Bruce Arians and you will fall in love. This guy everybody knows should have been coaching a long long time ago as chief dog. I played the game and I would have wanted this man as my coach. Go Bucs!

  35. StoutGospel Says:

    So what.

    John Harbaugh. That’s something.

  36. old time buc Says:

I have other choices I like better like Bienimie(sp), John Harbaugh! I will take Arians though. Good coach, hope his health is there!

  37. JimmyJack Says:

If you are going to defer youre defense needs to stop them at least half the time.

If not deferring hurts your team.

I don’t mind deferring but you better have the team that can pull it off. If not it’s a mistake.

  38. Stevbobucfan Says:

The thing with John Harbaugh is it’s gonna be a bidding war and heavy compensation for his services. 1 because he is under contract has not retired 2 there are at least 2 other teams bidding for his service. With Arians he is a proven winner wherever he has been and the bucs don’t have to give up multiple high draft picks to get him. Another thing is, I’ve said this like 8 times, Arians is 67, I think he will bring in 2 top notch coordinators in which 1 will take over as HC in 2 or 3 years when Arians retire for good

  39. Anonymous Says:

Sweezy is playing his azz off tonight, hate to say it, but they are running behind him almost every run.

Of course, he isn’t being forced to pass block almost the whole game.

  40. Bojim Says:

    Why not? Can’t dance.

  41. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Arians and Lichts futures depend on Winston. OL will be addressed in the draft and FA.

  42. Rod Munch Says:

I remember last offseason saying you need to keep Sweezy, get rid of that worthless Evan Smith, and whatever you do don’t draft a RB in the 2nd round when you have garbage starting defensive backs. Also said to take James – but I think literally 85% of fans said to take James and not Vita. In another year or two if Vita becomes a pro-bowler then perhaps it won’t look that bad – but James is nearly an all-pro guy already. Also said you don’t take a D2 gaurd in the 3rd round when the guy has the combine of an UDFA – they hit on Marpet and got cute, but Marpet had amazing numbers at the combine. Ugh.

Really I need to be the GM, my track record is strong.

  43. Jim Says:

    Deja vu all over again…

  44. Hodad Says:

L.T. Williams from Bama first pick. Pay D.Smith 14 million a year, and expect him to play better? If you’re going to throw deep, gotta protect Jameis. Williams is a stud, watch him tomorrow night. Consistently gets to the second level in the run game. Played against Okl without one false start, NO holding penalties. Would give us a true pro bowl O lineman for once, on a four year rookie deal. Save the 14 million on Smith, invest in defense.

  45. Michael Wright Says:

Some O linemen might not be here under Arians. He likes hard hittin Hogs up front. I see some changes to both lines coming under him.
