Report: Dirk Koetter Top Candidate To Run The Falcons’ Offense

December 31st, 2018

Reuniting?

One great misconception about Dirk Koetter is that he was fired along with Mike Smith in Atlanta after the 2014 season.

He wasn’t.

Koetter was retained and the Atlanta brass wanted him to remain as the voice in Matt Ryan’s ear.

Rather than stay, Koetter asked out and was denied. And then he ran it up the corporate flag poll and Falcons owner Arthur Blank let him go. Koetter wanted to stay loyal to Mike Smith, as well as explore the opportunities on his plate.

He then joined Lovie Smith and a rookie named Jameis Winston.

Now it seems the Falcons want him back. The man who owns coverage of the Falcons in Atlanta, D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, is writing tonight that Koetter is the top choice to replace recently fired offensive coordinator Steve Sarkasian.

Joe has seen first-hand in the bowels of the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway how there’s a lot of love between Ryan and Koetter, as well as Koetter’s family.

Falcons head coach Dan Quinn is in a win-now situation for 2019, and it’s clear he needs a playcaller who can hit the ground running with Ryan.

Will Koetter take the gig? Will Blank pay him enough to make it worth not collecting a check from Team Glazer to stay home and relax?

The fun part of all this is Koetter would join assistant Falcons head coach Raheem Morris on the Atlanta staff. Joe sure hopes Koetter takes the job. It would make for some fun drama next season.

  1. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Well that’s one way to fix your red zone woes… just play the Bucs twice a year.

  2. AleteredEgo Says:

If he does he’ll be going to a quality organization…Licht is playing Koetter as the patsy fall guy for his own shortcomings…

  3. DBS Says:

Hope he takes it if it is offered. And he won’t have to listen to 101 excuses.

  4. Jean Lafitte Says:

Wow, whatever records we may have set this year will probably be short lived next year. Ice is arguably the second best quarterback in our division with a ridiculously talented receiving core. ….and he gets us twice. You just can’t make this stuff up.

  5. Mike Johnson Says:

Look peoples……Some people in life are not suited to..run the ship. Dirk..I have.had no doubt will be excellent as an OC. Again, like I’ve always said, Stay in your lane. You know like our ill advised selection of US chief. Can’t say bad things politically beacause Joe is his supporter. But….Todd Bowles would make a Kick-a.. Dc for us. Not a HC. Defense is his lane. OC is Koetters one lane. stick with what you know.

  6. Ndog Says:

Wow I feel bad for Devonte Freeman, of course unless he can pass block.

  7. SilverBuc Says:

Maybe he’ll trade us Freeman for Payton Barber…

If the Bucs get a half decent DC we’ll be fine…

  8. TBTemojin Says:

Mike you’re right the Commander and Chief that is attempting to end two endless wars is “ill advised”…… Take your own advice Mike and stay in your lane!!! Don’t make this site political.

  9. Architek Says:

    Who cares

  10. Ndog Says:

Well the good news is if this does happen we won’t have to prepare for any RB screens, wildcat, double reverses, our basically anything creative.

  11. Bobby M. Says:

    Koetter’s a pro….he’s already moved on.

  12. donuts Says:

I dont buy this story about ATL OC but if it is true this would be good for the Bucs. I think we know Koetter redzone offense pretty well.

  13. Tbbucs3 Says:

This would not be good for the Bucs considering Dirk knows everything about the Bucs, the ins and outs of staff meetings, everything. The last thing we need is for the Falcons to own us even more.

  14. Dsg Says:

Raheem Morris has been fires. Keep up!

  15. BrianBucs Says:

We’ll see how Koetter does with a better O-Line, a much better QB, and a competent GM

  16. SilverBuc Says:

Dirk won’t know the ins and outs of sh!t when a new staff comes in, that argument is weak as F.

  17. Not there yet Says:

Well we better hire one hell of a coach. He’s the worst coach ever at making personnel decisions or anything resembling something a head coach would do but we just made them stronger with him having coached our players so we wouldn’t be able to keep Monken. All I know is I expect the falcons to have trouble in the redzone lol. Suck it dirk you were a horrible coach

  18. tnew Says:

Jaquizz Rodgers may have a job after all!!!

  19. Fire Light Says:

Good job opportunity. Take it! Go mess up Atlanta.

  20. Jean Lafitte Says:

Care to guess Atlanta’s record next year. I bet they won’t be in the basement.

  21. SilverBuc Says:

They won’t be in the basement because they’ll be 2nd to last, Cams shoulder is shot so CAR will be tanking.

  22. Iron Wombat Says:

Well the Bucs D won’t have to worry about the Atlanta run game if he takes the job.

  23. Jean Lafitte Says:

QB Kyle Allen had a terrific NFL debut 228 / 2TDs no TO’s filling in for Cam. You could argue he’s better than Cam at this point in Cam’s career. So there is the chance for Jameis to climb the ladder and proves he’s better than Allen or a broken Cam for 3rd. Tough sledding on a prove it year and what will be a whole new system to learn.

  24. Rod Munch Says:

Dirk is a good OC and I like his deep ball offense, but strange, in Atlanta, he LOVED running the bubble screen. Over and over and over again he’d run the bubble screen – part of the reason Ryan’s numbers are so inflated since those are ultra high percentage passages. Anyways here Dirk rarely ran WR bubble screens and I never really understood why. Between Hump and D-Jax, it seemed like it would be a natural fit, and for the idiot Winston haters it would have artificially boosted his completion percentage and QB rating that they seem to care so much about.

Anyways Dirk should take a year off, after all he’s getting paid by Glazers in any case. If Licht is still here, and he’s still doing as terrible of a job of providing the team with corners as he has been, then the last thing I’d want is Dirk running that deep ball offense versus a defense that might still include Chris Conte and Ryan Smith. Ugh… gives me the chills to even think about it.

  25. Rod Munch Says:

Jean Lafitte – That’s a great debut? He was playing against a Saints team playing backups. It’s like saying a guy had a great 4th preseason game and that proves something. LOL!

  26. Mort Says:

This would be terrible. Dirk f*cking knows offense. We had a damn good one this year despite headcase D Jax, and a turnstile right guard. And no running game to speak of. This’s would suck hard for the Bucs.

  27. Jean Lafitte Says:

yes munch a win on your debut is good ,,,you can make all the excuses you want for why a team won but the fact still remains that he won. I didn’t say he was GODS gift to the Panthers if that’s what you are trying to insinuate.

  28. SilverBuc Says:

Tough sledding for Jameis to learn a whole new system? The same Jameis that was calling protection audibles the first week of rookie training camp? Okay, lol

  29. ninety9buc Says:

    Good Luck Dirk!!!!!

    I wish you well!!!

We’re gonna kick your ass twice a year!!!

  30. Howard Cosell Says:

Congratulations on your parole Coach Koetter!

I’d say collect that Glazer easy money for awhile.
Maybe be a talking head for a year or two and then
comeback to a team of your choice.

….or you could take the Falcon OC gig if blank pays you
enough and you want to stay busy. I really think the Falcons
are a much better team than their record showed this year.
This season was a outlier for them (unlike the Bucs where it’s
    the norm)

Have fun giggling from afar at the Bucs awkward efforts to
    be a real NFL team

  31. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

    I wish coach Koetter well.

  32. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

Coach Koetter gets to be OC for an intelligent quarterback, decent running game, and great wide receivers… and he has a good defensive coordinator and reliable kicker

    Koetter lives happily ever after

  33. Jeagan1999 Says:

With Koetter running their offense (with weapons like Matty Ice, Julio, Calvin Ridley and Freeman), and Dan Quinn taking over the Defensive calls, I have no doubt that Atlanta will be formidable next season!

  34. Loyaltotheend Says:

Bevel who worked with Quinn in Seattle is the favorite

  35. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Why do I ALREADY see it?
I KNOW you all can already see it too.

    If this happens….

DIRK is going to absolutely TORCH our defense next year… twice.
