Ian Beckles’ 15 Takes From Yesterdays’ Bucs-Ravens Game

December 17th, 2018

Ex-Bucs guard Ian Beckles fires sharp darts at Ronald Jones, among others, and the men who drafted him.

Former Bucs guard Ian Beckles (1990-1996) fires away on all things Bucs each Monday on his RadioInfluence.com podcast.

Joe’s got the entertaining highlights/lowlights:

*Cameron Brate is underachieving.

*Over 37 minutes time of possession for the Ravens means both sides of the ball for the Bucs played a bad game.

*Is there any weather condition that benefits the Bucs? Beckles wonders. He says we don’t do anything consistent to say it does.

*14 points and 12 points in consecutive weeks for the Bucs offense and Jameis Winston is a bad look for a guy  playing for a job/contract. “And I still here people say, Jameis played well. Jameis did not play well to me. If that’s well, then we need to start all over. Because if that’s playing well, then we’re just good enough to lose to everybody.” Beckles blasted Jameis for a highly indecisive throw on his one interception.

*”I’m not a DeSean Jackson fan, but without him that offense is not the same.”

*”Chris Godwin is reading his press clippings.” He’s not that good yet. Beckles is pulling for Godwin to figure it out, but he’ll have to stop “running half-assed routes.””

*Beckles didn’t like that Peyton Barber had a mauling run up the gut on the first offensive play of the game, and the Bucs didn’t stick with trying to establish Barber enough. Beckles said he can’t remember the last time the Bucs really tried to establish the run.

*”Our tackling sucks. Our tackling is pitiful. … Baltimore seems to be tackling just fine.”

*”We just allow people to run the ball down our throats.” … “We were soft [on defense] at the end of the game,” as Baltimore ended the game rushing for first down after first down.

*”Ronald Jones, who recruited Ronald Jones? Somebody please stand forward. Who wanted this guy drafted? Period. If Ronald Jones was in the seventh round standing there I’d say, ‘Please don’t take this kid.’ Ronald Jones, I’ve watched him in training camp. I’ve watched him in preseason games. I’ve watched him in regular season games. I’ve watched him in just about every capacity. He has one flaw: he can’t catch the football. He can’t catch the football; he’s an undersized running back who doesn’t have very good running back skills. … Ronald Jones sucks. Period.”

*On Vita Vea: “I like what I’m seeing now. To me it looks like he is hopefully to this point not a bust. I’m seeing things in the last three games that make me think this kid can be a good football player going down the way. I really do.”

*On Gerald McCoy: “Gerald McCoy gets tossed out a lot in a game. Gerald McCoy will make 2 1/2 explosive plays per game. The rest of the time he’s just a guy. He’s just a guy. I know there’s still Gerald McCoy fans out there. I’m not completely certain he doesn’t make the Pro Bowl this year.”

*Lack of productivity with the offensive system is glaring and important. Beckles says most plays now are being made outside the pocket. A team can’t live that way long term.

*Beckles questions the nucleus of the Bucs and how good it really is, which doesn’t bode well for the future.

*Beckles hopes the team shows up with a “hella pride” in the last two games, ones they easily could lose because the Bucs are a bad match-up against nearly every team now, he says.

  1. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Big fat softie gerald mccoy makes 2 1/2 plays per game. LOL

  2. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

Starting to enjoy these Ian “Heckles”…he’s usually right on the money. I’m not so sure Cameron Brate isn’t exactly who he “should” be…an undrafted fella from the Ivy League who had a ton of touchdowns on a mediocre team ( see Tim Wright ). His hands are bettaying him on the tougher catches. Ronald McDonald Jones will be out of football in 2 years.

  3. BrianBucs Says:

I’ve said for a long time now that overall the talent on this roster is highly overrated compared to most other team’s. Really starting to show now.

  4. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Pretty much spot on with beckles…….why not draft darius guice? did someone not evaluate rojo and see he CANNOT catch

  5. BuccaneerByBirth Says:

I don’t understand how the undrafted TE out of harvard is underachieving by leading the team in TD’s but other than that hes right on the money. We stink

  6. JimmyJack Says:

How about Beckles correctly noting how a lot of our offense comes outside the pocket.

Think about our biggest play yesterday. It was not a designed play.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I guess since Hump & Evans weren’t mentioned they were OK…..

  8. SOEbuc Says:

Not a huge Beckles fan (his analysation). He’s telling me what I knew about yesterday just didn’t mention the awful play calls.

    -Coaches are trying to win:

-RoJo should not be in the game at all. Throwing him screens on a wet, freezing away game. You got to be f#cking kidding me.

-3rd and 2 inside Ravens 5-yard line. Box is stacked on both sides. What do they run? Koetter’s classic run up the middle which defenses know is coming every time because that’s what he does every time. Peyton Barber smacked for a loss of yards.

  9. SOEbuc Says:

But Vita Vea is continuing to look better every week. I’d like to get Ed Oliver in the first to replace slow a$$ stay puft 93.

  10. 813bucboi Says:

aint going to happen…..bucs will come out flat and get blown out!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!…GO BUCS!!!

  11. JimmyJack Says:

SOE……I totally argree with our play-calling vs stacked boxes yesterday. 3rd&1 was another example.

What really infuriates me is how, like Beckles said, we did not establish a run yesterday. Our run game was working great yesterday vs the Ravens base defense. We didn’t try to exploit that….Yet when we had short yardage situations we try to cram it down their throats. It was an awful strategy………I don’t understand what our coaches are seeing out their. With our running game working and our passing not it makes no friggen sense to throw 3 straight downs.

  12. rrsrq Says:

Skip Bayless said he didn’t trust the coaching staff and we laughed at him when he said it, who’s laughing now

  13. JimmyJack Says:

rrsrq…..Dion Sanders is laughing at us that’s who. Caught the post game show and he couldn’t say our teams team without cracking.

  14. SOEbuc Says:

And Beckles you can also mention how the Bucs get bulls#ited by flags every week. That OPA on Evans inside the ten. OMFG!!!!!!!! Not giving a sh!t about player safety anymore. You wanna get paid millions then you take the risk. These flags are BS. Roger and owners just don’t want Brady and Brees to go down for sales and TV ratings.

  15. ElioT Says:

Imagine how even more brutal the offense would have looked if Jameis had not pulled that 64 yard bomb to Evans out of his a** (great improv play)!

The Koetter and Monk game plan accounted for under 100 yards passing.

    The conditions weren’t that bad.

  16. tmaxcon Says:

look at beckels throwing cancer93 a bone with the 2.5 plays per game compliment.

  17. SOEbuc Says:

I’m loving Jameis’ scrabbling out of the pocket skills now. He’s breaking up defenses really well by either throwing at the line of scrimmage or running for good yardage. He’s playing the game smarter that’s why I’m excited to see him next year. Only took Koetter 4 years and his HC job to tell him to do that.

Right before that ugly pick, Jameis was on the sideline getting looked at by medical staff and looked in pain. Of course it’s Jameis, but just wanted to put out there.

  18. Architek Says:

Jason Licht – starring and should be accountable item one.

You want a new culture you need to eliminate all involved.

And then let the new regime decide which players should stay.

  19. JimmyJack Says:

Eliot……Winston and Evans are great at ad-lib plays like that.

I always thought Dirk should call a few rollouts per game with Mike crossing to the same sideline…….You wouldn’t even need to coach a play like that. Just take the leash off and let them 2 do whatever they want. Both are dedicated and hard working players….The results would be good.

  20. SOEbuc Says:

    Eliot

There was that deep throw to Evans at the beginning that went straight threw his hands. Shame, shame Mike.

  21. SOEbuc Says:

    Arckitek

“You want a new culture you need to eliminate all involved.”

Dead serious. Start with the jerseys.

  22. uckinator Says:

How can Liche do so well with off the street guys, ( Hump, Nassib, and Brate ) and so poorly with high round draft picks, (Rojo, Spence, Hargraves, and that little kicker dude from FSU ?? The next GM should keep him to root out the potential non drafted players. but keep him miles away from the draft room.

  23. adam from ny Says:

licht said it’s all in the magical coat…his “maroon ron burgundy” sports coat…if he is wearing the coat and picks a player, it’s a good pick…any other player picked while sporting another color coat becomes a bust…

he was wearing a light blue sports coat when he picked “little rojito” aka “roblo”…

ronald jones at this point knows he’s a bust and is playing scared…it kinda really sucks to see…he doesn’t belong on the field anymore…

    #TheBestThingAboutRojoIsNothing

  24. firethecannons Says:

    I agree with Becklel
    Ronald Jones sucks
This team needs a RB like Fournette or Derek Henry or Saquon
    big and bruising and sturdy
we do not have the o-line ability for a scat back
So glad we will dump Koetter hoping Licht is gone too–thanks to him we have completely worthless players like Ronald Jones

  25. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Beckles missing the real factor that is gone from the offense-O.J. Howard.

Jones has not received any real work in a game situation-get him in there.

JW’s throw to Evans was a throw that only one other QB in the league can make , and that is Aaron Rodgers.

Call Father Dungy and make him President of Football Operations-PERIOD.

  26. Reach87 Says:

Why doesn’t he just post directly on this site? Flake. Go Bucs!

  27. adam from ny Says:

djax is actually sorely missed…he truly loosens up the entire defense…it’s wildly true…even though he has to go due to shenannies and hang nails

  28. adam from ny Says:

wtf does ronald jones do…he’s completely useless…he is like the second coming or wr dexter jackson from app state…give the dude a mop and let him clean the locker room or something…give him another job…or inject him with roids…someone do something!!!

  29. adam from ny Says:

at least haze the sheet out of him!

  30. Destinjohnny Says:

    Put bama 92 with Vita……
    Man we would be nasty

  31. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

RoJo did get CRUSHED on that one play, yesterday.
Hey at least that was SOMETHING.

Most exciting thing he has done all year.
    Whew that is pretty sad.

  32. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    ….and as I pointed out earlier…

we DID FINALLY hear the name of Noah Spence called.

On the very first play of the game.
Penalty on the opening kick off.

  33. Phil Says:

We should try and trade McCoy in the off season. He’s getting old and has never had any drive.

  34. adam from ny Says:

until we start winning i’m going to call them the ybor city buccaneers…

because ronald jones gets mopped up on the field like all the bars do at 2 am

  35. GhostofSchiano Says:

    tmaxcon Says:

look at beckels throwing cancer93 a bone with the 2.5 plays per game compliment.

Those 2.5 plays is half an assist and 2 full assist in assisting opposing players up off the ground with 2.5 times the apologies a reasonable, normal person would give.

  36. SOEbuc Says:

Shaun Wilson is going to be Licht’s next bottom of the barrel break out. Gonna be what people thought RoJo was gonna be right after we drafted him.

  37. down in the dirt Doug Says:

If we do not get a president of operations for next year than our stadium will become a lonely echo chamber.

  38. joestang Says:

Licht is the problem, bad draft pics followed by bad free agent signings has left us in this situation. Licht should be the first one fired. If you are going to clean house start with Licht. DERRICK BROOKS FOR GM.

  39. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

I’m not giving up on RoJo yet. Can’t really argue with Beckles’ analysis of the kid thus far, he has sucked, but I’m not sold that he’s doomed to be a bust in the NFL. He looked so explosive in college yet looks lost on the Bucs…maybe he is a bust at this level or maybe he just “lost his Rojo” and can regain it with a few confidence building “take it to the house” runs? Dunno…hope it’s the latter though.

  40. Mike in LOL Says:

I think Rojo is just too small right now. He probably is playing scared because he gets hit 3x as hard as he probably ever got hit in college – every freaking play. The guys are just way bigger, faster and stronger in general in the NFL.

It’s my hope we stay patient, since this season is over anyway, let him get a full offseason of lifting in… have him lifting with the linemen… HEAVY… and have him eating like a horse… the Noah Spence 2018 offseason diet if you will. Just get the kid about 20 lbs heavier and stronger to make up for the extra weight and maintain his explosiveness…

  41. Hoops Says:

Brate can’t catch passes if he’s not being thrown to. Think he’s being under used.

  42. SOEbuc Says:

    Hoops

Agreed. But also don’t know if he’s being able to get open. He’s been one of Jameis’ favorites for a while, but is definitly getting targeted less.

  43. Joel Says:

Perfectly said on McCoy and Jameis.

  44. TOM Says:

Way to o Licht. Another failed draft pick to add to your resume.
