“In The Hunt” Matters To Ownership

December 13th, 2018

“Jason, were you listening to Mark Dominik this morning?”

Joe has seen the data crowd peg the Bucs with a 1-in-166 chance to make the playoffs.

But that flimsy shot could bump to about 1-in-50 with a Tampa Bay win Sunday at Baltimore, combined with a Redskins loss at Jacksonville along with a Giants beating of the Titans in New Jersey, among other results.

Playing competitive football when you’re “in the hunt” absolutely will matter to Team Glazer, said former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik on WDAE-AM 620 this morning. Team Glazer especially wants to see performance with everything on the line, he said.

Dominik didn’t speculate on whether the man who succeeded him, Jason Licht, or Dirk Koetter will be fired in a few weeks. But Dominik did reiterate some of the Team Glazer evaluation process he itemized two weeks ago.

Ownership will be dialed in to how the 2017 and 2018 draft classes are performing. Are they making a major impact, not just playing, but looking like impact players? the ex-GM asked rhetorically. Dominik pointed to Colts rookie second-round pick linebacker Darius Leonard tearing up the league, as an example.

Assuming Dominik is on point with his peek into the mind of Team Glazer, it sure would be nice to see a bounce-back game from Chris Godwin against a stout Baltimore defense. He’s carrying the torch now for the 2017 draft class. O.J. Howard is on injured reserve again. Justin Evans is hurt and has had a disappointing year. Kendell Beckwith lost the season to a car accident. And the other two 2017 draft picks are off the roster.

Of course, the 2018 Bucs draft class has been highlighted by fourth-round pick Jordan Whitehead, one exceptional afternoon by Vita Vea, and a lot of games lost to injury.

And not drafting Derwin James. A MAJOR need.

  2. Buc'n Enough Says:

Lets hope the Glazers give the boot to Jason & Dirk..I just hope hope they don’t miss

  3. rhenry Says:

Were they not in the hunt last week? and the week before that and so on and so forth.

  4. Warrenfb12 Says:

Licht is toast. Great waste of a pick in the second round (again) on a RB that can’t even get active for game day

Don’t push back the idea of keeping Koetter after every game. It’s done he should be gone, everything was on the line last week and they wet the bed in the entire second half. He’s done don’t keep saying every week if they play hard he has a chance he shouldn’t

  6. Troy Says:

This is all going to be put to bed on Sunday. This team has too many players who accept losing. It’s a cultural issue now. Come Sunday, I’ll be sipping my scotch watching a train hit a clueless squirrel. You guess who’s the train and who’s the clueless squirrel.

  7. Kobe Faker Says:

“You ready for a record breaking sunday? Lamar Jackson is going to run for over 200 yards vs the Bucs run Def

Its going to be comical. Our defense is going to look like Curly of the 3 stoogies spinning on the ground”

Keep DK, fire GM… we can’t keep firing coaches. A lot of the woes on this team have zero to do with DK. One problem has started to resolve itself… replacing Smith as DC… That is a plus for keeping in DK. QB situation was not of his doing. JW caused that inconsistency this season. The GM’s plan to rebuild the defense via FA blew up in everyone’s face. The GM’s assessment of defensive talent is atrocious and I have cited the examples many times. If we kick DK to the curb we are setting ourselves back!

  9. Knack2Babbyyyy Says:

If Jason stays, he needs to focus on adding depth to all positions. Lack of depth has hurt the Bucs this season , specifically on defense. There’s no reason why Josh Shaw should be taking any snaps.

    In The Hunt
    Ownership Matters

  11. D-Rome Says:

I thought that interview with Dominick was interesting in the beginning. It was evident he’s already had conversations with the Raiders.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If Jason stays, he needs to draft two Olinemen in the first two rounds.

  13. AllHail JPP Says:

Licht needs to go… this guy misses way too many times…I couldn handle a “ok, this guy isnt too bad but not great” vs ffs…most are horrible and now back at dennys waiting tables

  14. Bobby M. Says:

Trending?….We’re on track for a 4th losing season in 5 yrs with our 2nd head coach and 4th defensive coordinator. We’re lucky to snag ONE legit starter from every offseason with the draft and free agency combined. At our current pace, this team will need to resign guys to their 3rd contracts before Licht builds a complete roster.

We’ll know how good Licht does whenever a new coach comes in. If Licht is good, the coach will keep him….If not, he’ll be gone.

  15. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

There is no case for keeping jason licht the man has missed on so many FA moves and missed 2 entire drafts and again OJ is a great player but the bucs needed so many more pieces than oj….licht has a weird fascination with TEs and seems that TEs are the strengths to his version of a successful team

  16. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

Licht’s Out is threatening the futility set by Ol’ Dom’er himself. Both batting around .333 in the winning percentage department.

  17. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

    Tale of the tape:

    Dom’er 28-52

    Licht’s Out 27-50

With 3 games to go…Licht’s Out would need 1 win to tie Dom’er and 2 to beat him. It’s gonna be close!

  18. Destinjohnny Says:

    Jason has to go

  19. Eric Says:

In the hunt in an Elmer Fudd type of way.

  20. Eric Says:

55-102 between our last two GM’s?

    Awesome talent evaluators.

  21. 813bucboi Says:

    what a joke….lol….

glazers want to see how they play with stuff on the line?….lol….have they been watching the entire season?…..

last week vs the saints was the game to watch since we had so much on the line…..and what happened….ST was trash….offense was trash….no adjustments…..same BS from a dirk led team…..

and look at justin evans!!!!!!….another player that has “regressed” under dirk…..

    fire this clown 01/01/19!!!!!!

    KRIS RICHARD 4 HC!!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  22. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs D is gonna be worn out come Sunday. Ravens luv ro run the ball. And They got a QB who not only pulls the ball down and runs, They got designed plays for him to run. Rough game in the cold for these Bucs.

  23. Tnew Says:

I can sort of invent an argument that has a logical thread in it for Licht. Not for Koetter The only people who like Koetter are the ones who enjoy him “holding Winston accountable”.

If you take the time to watch the all 22 for the Bucs and the other teams in the NFL, it is a hard argument to make. When you watch the team implode from adversity, it is impossible.

  24. tmaxcon Says:

in the hunt is a relative term… bucs have only been in the HUNT 1 year in the last 42 but let’s rewrite history and act like the pretenders under dungy the clown actually contended in the postseason with there pathetic 2 playoff wins in 6 years… legends in bucs terms equal laughable in real nfl franchise terms.

  25. Not there yet Says:

    Tale of the tape:

    Dom’er 28-52
    Licht’s Out 27-50

What’s the common theme there? 1st time head coaches who will never get another chance except maybe raheem

  26. Buc4evr Says:

The Bucs have been in the hunt probably five or six times since 1976, but this team is not in the hunt . 6-10 most likely. Koetter and Litch are gone.

  27. SOEbuc Says:

Licht is only leaving if they wipe the slate clean.

  28. TOM Says:

    Sign Hunt.
