Dirk Koetter Has Been Fired

December 30th, 2018

Team Glazer is not wasting time. And Joe sure hopes they haven’t been wasting time over the past eight weeks as it became clear that Dirk Koetter was a second-rate NFL head coach.

Koetter earned the firing he got tonight from Team Glazer, and it’s certainly not just because his Buccaneers crumbled at the hands of the Falcons today after holding a 17-0 lead.

The Koetter regime fell apart slowly and steadily after a five-game winning streak in 2016. The Bucs have been a very, very bad football team since then, never having won more than two in a row (in one season) and losing more than two-thirds of their games.

Joe always loved Koetter’s candor and appreciated his effort and love of his players and the game.

But Joe won’t cry for Koetter, who will be paid handsomely by Team Glazer next season if he chooses to spend the year fishing in Idaho or on the water off his South Tampa house.

Koetter should be remembered positively for raising the bar on offense in this town. He did that as a coordinator in 2015, and it didn’t stop there. Too bad Koetter couldn’t build an effective running game. He likely would still be around.

Get excited, Bucs fans! A new head coach is coming to town.

    CUT WINSTON NEXT!!!

  2. Buccaneerscotty Says:

    Why keep light?

  3. Easy Says:

Licht should’ve been fired too. Still keeping fingers crossed

  4. Tbbucs3 Says:

    FIRE

    JASON

    LICHT!!!!!!

  5. Buc believer Says:

I CANT BELIEVE LICHT IS STILL EMPLOYED!!! Licht is as bad as Dominek was!!

  6. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Thanks for the offense! Bye Felicia!

  7. Buccaneerscotty Says:

That will limit who the new coach will be imo

  8. BucEmUp Says:

I’m happy that Jason Licht is staying. He has yet to hand pick his own guy as head coach. Lovie hired Licht, Dirk was the consensus pick to be promoted and both of those head coaches have influenced decisions and draft picks. Licht has a lot of.ties league wide I’m excited to see who he brings in

  9. BrianBucs Says:

    So let’s start this out with an unofficial JBF/BrianBucs poll;

Would all you guys rather see the Bucs hire an offensive minded head coach or a defensive minded head coach?

  10. Mike in MO Says:

Unfortunately the Glazers are rewarding Jason Gump by allowing him to conduct the HC search. Why?

  11. JP_09 Says:

Glazers said Licht will make the next hire. Could he bring in Bruce Arians? They have a history together

  12. DanBucsFan Says:

May as well clean house and send Licht on a paid vacation also

  13. Waterboy Says:

Licht will get his opportunity to choose and hire his own coach. Lovie hired him and Koetter was set to replace Lovie as soon as he was fired.

  14. Dave Says:

Not only is Licht staying, but the reports are he will be the one to pick the next coach.

  15. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

    YES!!!!!!

    Christmas came early!

  16. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Does this means Arians is coming? I figured that is the only way Licht would make it to coach #3

  17. Sunny Says:

They have someone “splashy” lined up already , bigger part of statement was Jason Licht will conduct the search, meaning he will not be fired.

Bring on jimmy boy or Bruce Bruce

  18. Knack2Babbyyyy Says:

Even though I fully support the release of Dirk Koetter, it’s still a bit of sad situation. I wanted him to become the HC in 2016, but for so many reasons it just hasn’t worked out. I have no doubt that he’ll still be coaching next season (as an OC). He’s a great person, however his team wasn’t able to produce wins. Thank you, Dirk for everything and I wish you the best of luck moving forward.

  19. Jeagan1999 Says:

McCarthy? Now that the Steelers have been eliminated, I wonder if Mike Tomlin will soon be on the market?

  20. gambelero Says:

So, Licht survives, but Koetter is cut? Hard to believe.

  21. Loyaltotheend Says:

The excuse for Winston next year will be

    It’s a new offensive system he’s learning
    He’s only 25

Sucks that Licht will be leading the charge on the new candidate but oh well another year of the Glazer Bros rebuild

  22. BrianBucs Says:

Jason Licht should have been the first one fired

  23. EA Says:

Since licht is being retained it probably means that Jim harbaugh won’t come here, he likes full control of the team. My guess is that Koetter was informed he was getting canned very early in the season, his press conference body language said it all.

  24. sandwichman Says:

YES PARTY TIME! Lets drank some drank and pop some pills!

  25. Zwak Says:

Thanks Dirk wish you nothing but the best Sir sorry things didn’t workout.

  26. Doug Says:

How do you not fire Licht ?

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I don’t feel sorry for Koetter but I am saddened in a way I wasn’t with Morris, Schiano or Lovie….

I like the guy and wish him well. There was no way he could have survived this season.

I agree that Licht should be fired but I suspect the announcement would have been made simultaneously so he may be retained.

  28. BROCKTACULAR Says:

    @ easy…
    The party aint over yet!

  29. Pryda...sec 147 Says:

Licht staying And JAMEIS is staying yay!!!!

  30. Tbbucs3 Says:

Unbelievable that Licht will keep is job.

How much freakin margin for error is this guy gonna have. Maybe Koetter would’ve succeeded with GOOD PLAYERS.

More proof that the Glazers suck and don’t know what their doing. Just suck.

More Lovie ball coming in 2019. CANT WAIT.

  31. Buc Neckid Says:

    Thank You for mentioning Arians!
Just the kind of Splash that the Glazers need!
    Great Coach

  32. StoutGospel Says:

Unfortunately…yet another example of the “national” breaking news reporters doing everyone’s job. Breaking…news.

Maybe Licht hires JOHN Harbaugh…and (Jenna Laine). Ya know, to get the mail or something, etc. :))

    Go Bucs!

  33. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

POOF! Dirk has been removed from the Bucs website.

  34. cmurda Says:

Relax about Licht. He’s not safe yet. The Glazers could have him help find a new Head Coach and then let him go. I think Licht gets another year though. I’m with getting rid of him now though.

  35. Sunny Says:

Jason Licht , has missed on pick and Fa signing , but he put together the best offense we have ever since , after the firing of mike smith , it was proved the coach on def were not getting the most of the talent they got. This is a playoff team we have the talent he gave this team the talent , the coach’s did not do they jobs , not his fault . He deserves to stay

  36. ben Says:

Why is Licht is staying unless Arians is coming ?/.. Light has NOT been a good gm !!

  37. RyJo Says:

“Our search for a new head coach will begin immediately and will be conducted by General Manager Jason Licht.”

I applaud your prudent decision, Glazer family, to remove yourself from the process of hiring a new head coach. Your track record in that area speaks for itself and it is refreshing that you also see that fact.

  38. Tc Says:

Arians, McCarthy and Jim Harbaugh are on bucs radar.

  39. Rod Munch Says:

As JPP said when asked about Dirk’s coaching… “I like it.”

That tells you everything about Dirk, that’s the type of ringing endorsement his players gave him. Think of Sapp or Brooks or Lynch being talked about Dungy or Gruden and their coaching, I’m sure the players would say “I like it.” Oh wait, no, they’d have said a lot more.

Dirk is a very good OC but we can see why, before the Bucs, regardless of his top ranked offenses in the NFL no one else ever gave him that job. He’s clearly not, and clearly wasn’t, head coaching material. The guy is/was a drama queen, after nearly 3 years still didn’t understand how the play clock worked, would throw his players under the bus, etc.

Anyways it’s a shame this move wasn’t made at the bye week, they should have fired Dirk AND promoted Mike Smith to HC and let Monken run the offense without Dirk forcing the run up the gut on 1st and 10 for 1.8 yards. Also Mike Smith is the exact opposite of Dirk, he’s a guy who is a good HC but a terrible coordinator, and I think Smith would have brought a sense of calm to the team and we could have seen how the season played out with a team that I believe would have been much better prepared.

Oh well Dirk, enjoy your millions while sitting on the beach. I’d rate the public shame of getting fired in exchange for that.

  40. Mike in MO Says:

For all you Jason Gump lovers hoping for a miraculous hire – forget it. What coach would want a GM who sucks in FA signings and whiffs on second round picks?

I’m so folks, Gump is part of the problem and not part of the solution.

  41. Waterboy Says:

No coach needs full control. If that’s the demand during the interview then keep looking.

  42. uckinator Says:

Licht never got his chance to name a head coach. He stays. Tough on Dirk Koetter. Nice guy, loyal to a fault which was his undoing. Time to move on. No more soft coach, soft practices and soft team.

  43. basementbucs Says:

NAH NAH NAH, NAH NAH NAH, NAH NAH NAH HEY HEY HEY GOOOOOOOD BYE!
Also good bye Licht, good bye Grimes good bye GMC. So glad this awful season is over.

  44. AleteredEgo Says:

Another BONEHEADED move by the Glazers…..unless they dump Jameis and Licht too….WTF will come in for a year with Jameis and all the other uncertainty…

  45. Waterboy Says:

You need checks and balances within an organization not a dictator.

  46. Frank Pillow Says:

Dirk was a stud at today’s presser. Kudos to you Coach for always owning it. Always. The Ws never came, but you never shifted blame or made excuses. T
Coach, thanks for your effort and your candor. Best wishes to you and your family.

  47. ElioT Says:

Why the hell would the Glazers let #lichtmyb*lls hire a new coach and then let him go?

    Lol

    This blows.

    APATHY

  48. Buc4evr Says:

Geez. Jason Gump is still around to screw up the next draft, sign worthless free agents and pick a new head coach. What could go wrong. LOL.

  49. Stevbobucsfan Says:

Here we go with the cut Winston crap again did anyone see the vikings bears game. K Cousins 84 or 87 million and really didn’t do anything this year be careful what you wish for

  50. theodore Says:

    Coach-killer Jameis sharpening his blade.

  51. Tampabaybucfan Says:

“Our search for a new head coach will begin immediately and will be conducted by General Manager Jason Licht.” Joel Glazer to NFL.Com

    Licht definitely retained.

  52. Jerry Jones Says:

Licht is staying on and apparently helping with the head coach search.

  53. TOM Says:

Firing Koetter doesn’t mean a thing if they don’t fire Licht. It will be the same crap next year & beyond. Glazers do us a favor & sell the team. Its quite obvious you don’t know how to run a team.

  54. Buc believer Says:

Not excited at all…. actually DAMN F….ing depressed that Licht is staying. How the hell does that happen when you have a record equal to Dominek?

  55. bucnut2 Says:

Winston got him fired. HE’s a coach killer. Hopefully Licht is next!

  56. Alaska Man Says:

I try every day at my job. I over achieve. But, meh.

  57. Troy Says:

Licht is a failure just like Dirk. It should be a complete house cleaning.

  58. mdsbuc Says:

Put me in the camp that Licht should have been fired. He couldn’t give Dirk the talent on the o-line needed to build that running game.

  59. RyJo Says:

I gather the Glazers consider Koetter, and his substandard head coaching, the root cause of the Buccaneers’ woes. Licht staying must mean that they believe he did his job of providing enough talent only for Koetter and his coaching assistants to subsequently sabotage the players (you know, with the aforementioned substandard head coaching). I can’t say I disagree with the assessment. I really want to see what a new coach with a new strategy/philosophy can do with our guys.

  60. Mike in MO Says:

I’m going to miss Fake Kobe.

  61. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

I think GMC and the boys on D that are the REAL coach killers.

  62. BucEmUp Says:

I would like to see whoever is hired to change this defense out of playing primarily zone coverage. I want a coach that adjusts play to play not half to half. PLAY CHESS NOT CHECKERS!!!!!!

  63. dbbcpa Says:

It is sad to see Koetter get fired. Not that I don’t think it should have been done. He is a nice guy, straight-up, tells it like it is and I think has a good relationship with his players. I hate it how everyone enjoys someone else getting fired. The media especially. Same for Litch, not sure if he should be here or not, but I don’t relish in the idea of him getting fired either. I am a Gator fan but don’t think all of Jamis’s problems are on him. He has no running game to complement the pass and usually does not have enough time to pass. I am not one to blame fumbles on the quarterback when they get blindsided, etc. How many of you readers, would be able to get up much less hold on to the ball. Yes he had made many plays we shake our head at. But it seems he has turned the corner on that. Go Bucs!

  64. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

If you say Winston is a coach killer you are either a troll or blinded by hate and unable to recognize what you are seeing with this team.
Jameis didn’t cost Dirk his job, Jameis GOT Dirk his job geniuses.

  65. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

    Exactly Ryjo

  66. Rod Munch Says:

Glazers should have let Sapp pick the next HC, I’d have a lot more confidence in him picking someone than Licht. Plus it would be entertaining.

  67. Bculaw Says:

Licht is under a one year deal. Bucs bring in someone like Harbaugh, who will get full control and Licht finds the door next year.

It would be very Glazier-like to put Licht in charge of the search and then pick their own HC at the end.

  68. Mike Says:

Licht is terrible and Klueless as well. The dysfunction has not been rooted out. The Glazers have no clue. Light has their ear and has them completely conned.
I still have a sinking feeling in my stomach. More suffering to come. Glazer boys heading into Culverhouse territory.

  69. bucnut2 Says:

What a HUGE miss by the Glazer’s. Keeping Licht and allowing him to select player and coaching talent ensures that we will remain a losing franchise!! WOW I’m shocked!

  70. PoundTheRock Says:

    Mike Tomlin

  71. Dlavid Says:

    Saints be praised !

  72. Tc Says:

They are keeping light around for awhile for stability

  73. Architek Says:

Can he take Winston with him

  74. Rod Munch Says:

Steelers fans are having a meltdown on Twitter about Tomlin needing to be fired… man the Glazers need to personally be calling the Steelers owner and trying to make a deal.

  75. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

    Haha Mike, I almost forgot

Good luck to Dirk. But you gotta to git

  78. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Buccaneers’ GM Jason Licht is leading the team’s HC search along with the search firm, Korn-Ferry, led by Jed Hughes, per source. Korn-Ferry helped Texans with Bill O’Brien, Falcons with Dan Quinn, Chiefs with Andy Reid, Seahawks with Pete Carroll and Jaguars with Doug Marrone. Per Adam Shefter.

  79. Alaska Man Says:

    Hugh Culverhouse 2.0

  80. PoundTheRock Says:

    Again, Mike Tomlin!

  81. BucEmUp Says:

If Arians somehow decides to come here I’m putting some money on the bucs next year. If it’s Jim Harbaugh I don’t think I’ll watch many games

  82. MadMax Says:

Na, keep Licht but bring on Harbaugh!!! and give him full control over staff!!! Let Licht run the ops and draft. He seriously hasnt been that bad at drafting.

  83. Bculaw Says:

@RyJo – there has been discussion in some of the recent podcasts that Koetter and his staff have not been playing the roster as intended – meaning they were playing players out of the positions for which they were selected (ex. MJ Stewart intended to be hybrid safety/CB, Benenoch intended as RT, etc. ). It’s possible that Licht has assembled talent and it is being misused (or not used in the case of Rojo and N. Spence).

  84. JimmyJack Says:

    Scotty…..cool.

  85. MadMax Says:

Harbaugh has SB, Arians? But dont get me wrong, Id love to have Arians too.

  86. Sunny Says:

Got the 5th pick in draft

  87. PoundTheRock Says:

If the Steelers fire Mike Tomlin….Buc’s don’t walk to get him, they run!

  88. WalkdaPlank Says:

Keeping Jason Licht is a joke.

  89. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Ryjo

Dirk Koetter was the root of our problems??? Not even close

Pretty sure the root begins with Jordan Whitehead, Javen Elliot, Adams, Brent Grimes And Ryan Smith. What is a coach supposed to do with that?

  90. JimmyJack Says:

Guys…..I just did a jig!!! Let’s crack the bubbly!!!!

  91. EA Says:

Buzz around the football world was that bucs had enough talent to be a playoff contender but coaching let them down, which was evident by hanging on to Smitty for a long time and the difference after he was fired. Glazer’s did their homework I’m assuming before they decided to retain Licht. Bucs need a good motivator, a guy who has some energy.
Koetter is a great person, thanks for you time coach, see ya.

  92. DislocatedBucsFan Says:

    Bad move

  93. Krojen Says:

What a joke that Licht gets a 3rd head coach. Season’s over before it starts again.

  94. MadMax Says:

And I’ll take Tomlin over all of them in a heart beat!

  95. Greg Says:

Obviously the easiest decision for the Glazer’s to can Koetter and retain Licht for ease of the transition but Licht and his poor scouting staff are a huge problem!

  96. Tbbucs3 Says:

    Bculaw

Ya guys like Mj Stewart, Caleb Benenoch, Noah Spence and Ronald Jones we’re being miss used. Or………..

    Maybe they are just BAD.

  97. JimmyJack Says:

I don’t mind Licht. He got some decent connections. Not just any ole GM gonna deal with New York and take one of their best players.

He took a great one from the Patriots too. The Glazers know what’s up and know Licht is a good dude to have on their side.

  98. Nate Says:

Yea Joe, don’t worry be happy

Except the guy doing the hiring and no retained good draft picks in 14 n 16 n more is doing the hiring

He had just as much blame for no running game….Ronald Jones is great

  99. Rod Munch Says:

PoundTheRock – Tomlin isn’t getting fired, no way that happens. BUT they might listen to trade offers…

Said it before, but I’d gladly give up the #1 for Tomlin and Bell as a package. I’d then sign Tomlin to a 10-year deal like Gruden got and just put an end to the every other year firing the coach routine.

If the Steelers did fire Tomlin, which won’t happen, then you’d have every team with an opening, and teams without openings, all making him their top choice and it would be an incredible bidding war and I doubt the Glazers would win that battle. That’s why it’s trade, or nothing.
    [
And if Licht is in charge, if the Glazers don’t personally do it, it won’t happen. Not that I actually think it would happen, but you have to strike while other cities are throwing hissy fits.

  100. PoundTheRock Says:

    Tomlin: 124-66-1 .652 win pct and 15 play-off games.

    2 x AFC Champ, 1 x Super Bowl Champion

If Steelers fire him, go get him.

  101. zzbuc Says:

Very sad day on Bucs organization, feel really sorry for a classy guy like Koetter. some players can’t even look at themselves in the mirror…….I hope some players never come back, starting with D Jackson, following with Demar Dotson and Donovsn Smith….and finally please open your eyes, the big blame is on the GM, there was never a good roster since he is here, this team is really thin when it c9mes to talent…….

  102. StoutGospel Says:

#5 PICK IN 2019 DRAFT!!! Confirmed. HELL YEAH!

  103. MadMax Says:

^ a #1 for Tomlin, yeah, but Bell is done….he’d be a cancer.

  104. Dumpster Fire Says:

One down, two to go. Fire Licht immediately and then cut Jamoist post haste. If they keep the turnover machine, the next coach would be his third in five years. At what point do you realize that you fumbled the number one overall pick? I’m still hopeful that the Glazers have seen enough. It’s time for a change in direction. That starts with throwing out the ghetto trash.

  105. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

    Bell isn’t under contract

  106. Upthegut Says:

Well said Frank Pillow. Dirk may not have succeeded as aHC,but you must respect the man. Dirk is a class act.

  107. KnoxvilleBuc Says:

GM Jason Licht has to be next

  108. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I tried to tell you haters, Jason Licht was going nowhere. You cannot deny the side of the ball he focused on has gotten better. The offensive is one of the best.

And the draft defensive draft picks are gradually coming around…not to mention he had a good 2018 free agency/ trades.

    But the real reason?

    Expiring contracts.

No way could the Glazers fire him when we have important players to resign before they hit free agency and offensive staff to extend. The Glazers have no choice but to keep him…and if people had looked at it without bias, they would have seen that.

  109. MadMax Says:

Good luck with your future endeavors Coach K.

  110. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

As to Dirk…he was one of my favorite coaches in Franchise history…even if the wins were not there. I wish him good tidings and success moving on…so long as it is not against the Bucs.

  111. Darin Says:

Glazers did waste time. First n only time ive ever seen a coach give up in the first half of a game was dirk last yr in Arz. I havnt watched all hue jacksons games tho. Dirk should have been canned then and again this year when he basically said he should be canned after chicago game. He called for his own firing and the Glazers let him stay.
Anyway time to celebrate! Adios Klueless.
Get a real Head Coach!! Dont let anymore stay too long.

  112. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

And the next head coach of the Atlanta Falcons?

    Dirk Koetter.

Dirk got himself fired. By sticking with Smith for to long.

  120. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Hopefully we will sign a defensive minded coach, Fangio would be awesome, and retain Monken at OC. We need a new OLine coach and I would let the new coach pick his defensive staff.

I personally am glad to see DK go. It was embarassing to watch us week in and week out and the level at which we were unprepared. Its unacceptable and the right call was made. I think Monken is talented enough to take over our offense completely, thats why I hope we sign a defensive minded guy.

  121. Obed Ariri Says:

I see the Bucs go after David Shaw

  122. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Whomever gets the job, I truly hope they do their due dilligence when it comes to the draft. The guys I would be focusing on are

    OT. DT. DE. CB
Jonah Williams. Quinnen Williams. Josh Allen. Greedy Williams
Greg Little. Ed Oliver. Rashan Gary

  123. Tbbucs3 Says:

“Can’t decide the side of the ball he focus on got better”

    Cmon Bonzai

You know that a GMs job is to build a whole football team and not just focus on 1 side of the ball? Pretty sure that defense is pretty important….l..

  124. Tbbucs3 Says:

  125. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

    Jonah n Little OT
    Quinnen n Ed DT
    Allen n Gary DE
    Greedy CB

Any one of those guys would instantly improve our team. We need the most help on our lines so I would be happy with any of those players. And who doesn’t want a corner whose name is Greedy lol

  126. James Walker Says:

If a better, big name coach is not named immediately than this is a HUGE mistake. Koetter is a good coach, but the bucs need a HOF bound coach to turn this franchise around. Good coaches are not enough to escape mediocrity.

  127. Elita Vita Says:

If the Glazers want Arians to be the Bucs next head coach keeping Licht is the way to get him. Everyone knows the Licht-Arians connection.

  128. firethecannons Says:

Deserved to be fired because he made no move to part with Mike Smith much much sooner. Smith should NEVER of been DC for this last year. Koetter might be a Bucs fan but did not have what it takes to be a HC otherwise his buddy and pal would of gotten the boot long before. I appreciated his candor also but now it is time to finally move on.

The draft board is already set and I see keeping Licht early from the glazers perspective. If they are on the fence about him then he’ll have no excuse for a bad draft next year. And I have the feeling all these underperforming players will be much better under a new coach. Pretty sure he might even be helping with the coaching search

Regardless of how fans feel about Licht, the glazers were excited by the talent on this team, that’s because of Licht. It’s not his fault dirk and Lovie sucks

The stadium will be empty. I know none of these Winston fan boys can afford tickets. What a shame. This franchise is officially in the crapper.

  136. Buccfan37 Says:

I don’t hate Licht but wonder why he is still here. Teflon Licht.

  137. Swanee22 Says:

Glazers should step down. They are responsible for making the decision to retain the head coach. This was foreseeable and this product on the field is unacceptable. The revenue from the residents and non residents of the Tampa Bay Area are in the millions. The probability on Bucs not making the playoffs in last 5 years is approximately a 100 to 1 , to not make it in 11 years is about thousand to one , it cannot happen.

Hey Joes, Roy Cummings trashed you on Twitter without naming you guys. LMAO.

    Go grind that ax.

Ha!! Let’s see..a high-end coach with a few teams to pick..most would want a good QB on board..Mayfield or Winston?? Every potential coach will know Jameis is a career killer..next excuse for Jameis? Well, he needs some time to get adjusted..blah blah blah..

If I was a HC candidate, I would stay away from that loser QB and not risk losing my career..
