Eat A “W;” Lose The Draft Charade

December 29th, 2018

“Mr. Glazer, don’t listen to Joe. We can lose this game without tanking.”

Go ahead, Bucs.

Go ahead and do everything in your power to win Sunday against Atlanta.

But Team Glazer, if that “W” comes, don’t ever again have the audacity to tell fans and/or media how important it is to build the through the draft, how it’s the cornerstone building block of the franchise.

If you believe that much in the draft, then you do what you can to lose Sunday’s game by sitting your best players.

Simple as that, as Lovie Smith used to say.

It’s easy to say you play to win because that’s what you do when you wear the uniform and fans are buying tickets in good faith to see the best competition.

However, Team Glazer, Jason Licht and Lovie were just fine with tanking to close the 2014 season.

Out came Vincent Jackson early after one catch against the Saints at home in the season finale. Out came Mike Evans at halftime. (Evans tells a great story about how he had his typical IV at halftime because nobody told him the team wasn’t going to play its best players.)

Lavonte David left the field and, as it had been in previous weeks, struggling Josh McCown was the starting quarterback over Mike Glennon.

The Buccaneers tanked that 2014 finale in plain sight before the home faithful, meaning they pulled much of their best personnel and hoped for the worst/best with a pile of backups. It worked. They finished 2-14 and won the Chase for Jameis, securing the No. 1 overall pick with the loss.

One could argue the stakes are as high this week. A loss to Atlanta appears to lock up at least the No. 6 overall pick in April. A win could push the Bucs down to double digits in the draft order.

Joe understands the concept of doing everything to win a game, and it’s even possible there’s an organizational desire to right the ethical mess of tanking without transparency in 2014.

But the charade needs to end. Losing Sunday is in the best interest of the team. There is no debate.

If the Bucs play their best players Sunday and actually beat the Falcons, a change in message better be in place at One Buc Palace. Joe would never again want to hear Team Glazer sell that the NFL Draft is the holy grail of building the Bucs.

That chatter would lead Joe to scream fraud and corporate malfeasance.

On the subject of tanking, Dirk Koetter tried to float nonsense last night on SiriusXM NFL Radio. He said he’d have trouble looking his players in the face if he didn’t play the best players in any game.

Joe nearly puked. Really coach? Football is the ultimate team game and you can’t tell your team that it’s out of the playoffs and young player X is going to get his shot this week to build for the future? What kind of leadership is that?

The correct company decision is to sit top players all day on Sunday. It stinks that it’s come to this, but Joe sure hopes intelligence prevails.

    I have to point this out again. While the arguments you make are quite understandable, JOE, in the efforts to rebuild a football team, the whole thought process makes me sick. Darn right it’s sickening, but that doesn’t mean you don’t man up and do it.–Joe

    I truly believe that if this line of thinking continues down the path that it is, and to the degree that it is…… amongst not only fans of teams, but teams themselves…

    Than at some point the NFL and NBA will have no choice but to go to a COMPLETE and TOTAL LOTTERY system for draft order, with no consideration whatsoever to Win-Loss record.

    And it would not be the same order, each round.
    EVERY SINGLE ROUND would be a randomized draft order.

    This would completely eliminate this line of thinking and ensure that every team was trying to win every single game, with no thought of TANKING.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Cue the losing culture…….we deserve what we get if we hope for a loss.

    A better draft pick is always the consolation prize for losing…..and it starts with the first loss and ends with the last.

    I’ve been rooting for the Bucs to win since that first miserable season in 1976 and I will root for them to win Sunday. Join me true Buc Fans!!!

  3. Ateonetree Says:

    We need to lose this game!!! Someone bring back mike Smith just for the finale!!

  4. VFL98 Says:

    Yea, Joe your wrong on this. IF your a true fan, or Player you NEVER, EVER, EVER, want to lose no matter what. And you NEVER want to lose to the divisional rivals. This says a lot about you JOE! I know how important the draft is but I also know what losing does to players and an organization. We have to change our attitude and it starts this Sunday. GO BUCS!!

  5. Not there yet Says:

    Koetter is a horrible coach anyway so not surprised by that comment one bit but as you said with the mike Evans story yes he expected to play because the players won’t be out there trying to tank. This will be up to ownership Or Licht to say play the young guys after halftime because Koetter just won’t do it.

    I’m not on the side of tanking and it’s a stupid debate as we’ve already said in a post earlier this week if the bucs aren’t getting the best players in the draft anyway it doesn’t matter where we pick. The draft hasn’t put this team in a winning position in more than a decade yet here we are talking about it again as if that will help. The only thing that will help is a competent coach who will coach up whoever is in the building and get rid of the weak minded players

  6. TheNorm Says:

    Yea and now some of the same FSU jock sniffers that were fine with tanking to get Winston are now all bent outta shape and want the team to win lmao bunch of hypocrites.

  7. AlteredEgo Says:

    The Glazers are in a word STUPID to make any coaching/GM changes with Jameis clinging to a 5th year option…too much uncertainty for the next HC

  8. Destinjohnny Says:

    Jason will blow the draft anyway
    If he stays our new coach will be sacked in year 2

  9. RyJo Says:

    I actually agree with you, Joe, despite your inflammatory argument (you’re framing it in the worst possible way, really). Treat this final game as a bonus preseason game and let’s get to know our guys further down on the roster.

    We can 1) See if any of the lumps of coal are actually diamonds, and 2) Advertise players’ skills and potential in order to drum up interest in potential trades-for-additional-draft-picks, and 3) Satisfy my curiosity (yes, I’m self-centered like that) regarding WTF is up with Noah Spence.

    Just avoid the t-word when you frame it…

  10. Usedtocould Says:

    Truth

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    I have supported Winston all the way since we drafted him. I supported drafting Mariota because of the concerns over off-field behavior….which have unfortunately become reality.

    I think you could make a very good case that tanking for Winston didn’t work out any better than if we had beaten New Orleans and ended up with Mariota.

    So……losing for a draft position only makes sense if you always make the right choice and we don’t.

  12. Loyaltotheend Says:

    Loser mentality hoping for a better draft pick that has a 50% of being good

  13. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

    Yeah joe if we wanted to tank for draft picks we should have not fired Mike Smith

    This kind of backwards thinking blows my mind, draft position DOES NOT MATTER. Jason Licht is the root cause of our problems because he can’t draft or sign the right players to fit our coaches scheme or system.

    And every year Bucs dangle a high draft pick over fans heads to give us false hope that next year will be any different.

    Fire Licht, Fire Koetter, keep every player unless they voluntarily leave, and bring in a new head coach like Mike McCarthy to change the losing culture and give our weak minded players some god d#mn pride to play for Tampa Bay!

  14. Loyaltotheend Says:

    Did we really “win” the chase for Jameis when all he does is lose?

    Andrew Luck’s longest losing streak as a QB is 4? What is Jameis’s? Dude is not a franchise qb at all

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Would you want your child to fail?

    But your child would have a better chance competing against younger students the next year.

    Hoping for failure in order to gain future success simply leads to more failure.

    It is the definition of “losing mentality” and those who embrace it just don’t get it.

  16. scbucsfan Says:

    This article sets the tone for this blog. Let’s be losers.

  17. bunk Says:

    only bucs fans would want a W in a situation like this. winning a meaningless game, and putting us in a worse position to draft one of the most elite players in the draft

  18. John B Says:

    Only fitting in Bucs lore, we win, they keep the FO in place, the GM takes a TE at #12

    Weapons for Griffin!!

  19. Andrew Says:

    Puhlease people. That win against the saints last year realllly carried over to this season lol. They really harped on a positive heading into the offseason. Chris Godwin really built on that great last play, his only td of the year.

    Meanwhile, Chubb has 12 sacks as a rookie and Nelson is steamrolling people at guard for the top line in football. Vita does look much improved. But the 5th pick would have fetched more for a trade if you wanted to still trade down. Terrible win.

  20. Tbeartbb Says:

    Please Win So the TERM Den of depression goes away

  21. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    Ateonetree Says:
    “Someone bring back mike Smith just for the finale!!”

    —————–

    Ok, that was pretty frickin funny. LMAO

  22. Zwak Says:

    Ya stupid thinking Joes the Rams drafted top 5 for years look how it worked out for them?

  23. ben Says:

    Winning means NOTHING for next year .. the draft does!!

  24. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    TheNorm Says:
    “Yea and now some of the same FSU jock sniffers that were fine with tanking to get Winston are now all bent outta shape and want the team to win lmao bunch of hypocrites.

    ——————

    I don’t attack other posters very often, but the only consistency in your posts TheNorm is that they are stupid. What in the hell does one thing have to do with the other?? LOL.

  25. Pete I Says:

    Dirk = 19–28
    Licht = 27-52
    Winston = 21-32
    Since Malcolm’s Stroke = 77 – 130

    Odds are we won’t need to tank, losses come naturally for the current crew.

  26. Kalind Says:

    Losing is the ONLY option. What do we get if we win? 6-10? Yay.

    Or we could get a top 10 pick. Makes trading a lot easier. It has to be a loss. Big changes are coming, we’ll need the draft capital.

  27. Pete I Says:

    Eat a W Crap an L – Buc digestive track

  28. Conte Piscatelli Says:

    Here’s the problem, day order doesn’t really matter. Bad organizations screw up premium picks all the time while good ones find stars wherever they happen to draft. Lately, many teams have been willing to go get their guy in the draft as well, while some teams just take the guy that falls to them. A good front office isn’t worried about a couple spots in the draft, and a bad front office can eff up the first overall pick.

  29. Cobraboy Says:

    This will be an interesting game that brings back the memory of the 1991 Repus Bowl.

    Here we have two teams, both of whom are desperate for a loss.

    I’m hoping the Falcons pull off a win with a 2-pt conversion at 0:01 in the 4qtr.

  30. Warrenfb12 Says:

    Look man, there is literally no reason to win this game tomorrow (the Bucs will). Bucs won a meaningless game last year and it cost Quentin Nelson. I’m so tired of this organization tripping over itself. So stupid.

  31. TheNorm Says:

    @tampabaydemon

    Because most people on here are absolutely stupid. You all act like the culture of the team hinges on this last game. So stupid to win this absolutely meaningless game. And yes the same people that were ok with tanking for Winston are the same people now saying we should win this last game.

    So so stupid. Like the bucs are gonna remember this last game next season and somehow a win is gonna carry over. So stupid.

    Just a whole bunch of stupid on this thread.

  32. I Bleed Pewter Says:

    people playing for their damn jobs and this website and the of couple losers who run it are the worst fans ever.
    Joe doesn’t tell you or anyone how to be a fan. Nobody gets to define what a fan is and how a fan should feel?–Joe

  33. I Bleed Pewter Says:

    The Norm is a Joebot loser

  34. Crazed Bucs fans Says:

    If Jameis goes, they better get Dwayne Haskins! That’s it, no other replacement.

  35. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

    Please PLEASE play the best players again. That has worked VERY well for our 5-10 record this year.

  36. AlteredEgo Says:

    I don’t trust the Glazers to make any football decisions…..even finding the President od football operation that would oversee the GM….they are 0 for everything they set out to get….other than this team…they stumbled into Dungy and Gruden ,neither where their 1st choice and gawd only knows what would have happened then….maybe someone in Silicon Valley can create a AI software program for every aspect of the team including play call

  37. BoomBoomBoom Says:

    I respectfully disagree. This is exactly what adds coal to the losing culture fire that has been burning at One Buc Place for the past decade. Why not go out there and try to win. Been doing that all year and still losing. Why change anything now?

  38. Aceofaerospace Says:

    Punt on first down.

  39. Locked In Says:

    I can’t support tanking. I think the Bucs owe it to the fans to compete each and every week. We’ve had top picks more years than not and how’s that worked out?

    That being said, we’ll probably lose anyway. I just hope everyone comes out of the game healthy.

  40. Coburn Says:

    What I find really surprising is that ad terrible as the team has been this year how many teams actually have a worse record. Blew me away when I heard even with a loss the best we could do is 6th and with a win would end up 12th. I’m like huh? How is there that many teams just as bad or worse than us?

  41. Cobraboy Says:

    Gotta remember the Falcons want to lose as badly as the Bucs.

    Has there EVER been a game with nothing but punts & fair catches?

  42. Pugs&Bucs Says:

    One man’s “tank” is another man’s “player development.”

    But that’s none of my business…. \_(••,)_/

  43. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    @Norm,

    Ok man, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. And you have a right to be in a bad mood as a Bucs fan. We all are.

    I just didn’t really see the correlation between some of your points.

    I don’t think “culture” or “going into next season” has as much to do with it, as that it just unnatural to root to lose.

    I will always want the Bucs to win.

    As many have humorously pointed out today….. the Bucs have proven that they don’t really have to TRY to lose… to get it done.

  44. Kenny Says:

    Absolutely correct. We have been out of it since October. A win today against Atlanta doesnt mean dropping 1 or 2 picks in the draft… it means dropping 6-8 picks…. There are a lot of 4, 5, and 6 win teams were competing with for a draft pick, and luckily we have most of them beat in tie breakers for the top pick.

    We HAVE to lose this game.

  45. Dave Says:

    You forget the Falcons have nothing to play for either. This is a meaningless game for them too.

    Plus, it doesnt seem to ever matter where the Bucs pick. They are terrible at the draft.

  46. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    Aceofaerospace Says:
    “Punt on first down.”

    ———————-

    LMAO, Ace!!!!

    Guys running backwards on punt returns…..
    Tackles stepping aside and just tripping the edge rushers….
    Field Goal Kickers turning around and kicking it the opposite direction…

    hahahahaha

  47. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    Cobraboy Says:
    “Gotta remember the Falcons want to lose as badly as the Bucs.
    Has there EVER been a game with nothing but punts & fair catches?”

    ———————

    Man, Cobraboy, this is a pretty funny sentiment too.
    What if BOTH teams just refused to take the field before the game? LOL

  48. Bird Says:

    Give Jameis a pulled pork brisket shake before the game

    It’s funny to see posters say , you play to win and let’s start win streak next year. It will carry over.

    The saints win last year cost the Bucs quinton Nelson Jamies plays good at end game and his messiah comeback game where obsessive joe watched while naked
    I give you Benenoch I mean really ?

  49. Crazed Bucs fans Says:

    If not Jameis, Haskins, damn it!!!

  50. SteveK Says:

    We had to stomach a crappy season after a 2-0 start. Jameis didn’t have “it” when he first came back and it cost us another lost season. I’ve come to terms with that.

    Last year we won a meaningless game and it cost us Quentin Nelson or Bradley Chubb.

    If we win tomorrow and draft st 10 or 11 as opposed 6 or 5; then that will be a collective “kick to the d!ck” to the fan base.

    A splash coaching hire is going to want a top 5 pick; not 10th or 11th.

    Another year in the NFC S Basement means we deserve a loss today for the greater good.

  51. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    BUCS 47
    FALCONS 10

  52. AlteredEgo Says:

    Maybe they should have a reverse play off system for the teams that didn’t make the real play offs and they can play each other for higher draft picks by winning

  53. richardtyson Says:

    Winning this game also gives the Falcons a better draft pick.

  54. JimmyJack Says:

    Joe I call BS that it’s not debatable. Listen to Beckles and he said the Falcons are gonna give us all they got because that orginazation got to much pride. Why can’t our team play with the same pride?

    Seems to me like your using your blog to put pressure on this team to bend over on Sunday and embarrass their fans again. Just remember the term meaningless is opinion and not fact.

    And why can’t you try to win a football game and still build through the draft as a foundation? That part of the article is sillyness.

    Also remember that just because you don’t care about tomorrow’s game doesn’t mean nobody does.

    I just like to know why our team is so different from the rest of the league that we are pressured to lose games on purpose while every other city gets to watch their teams give them their best on Sunday.

    Cry about it after the fact.

  55. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    ^^ JimmyJack, you put this really well. The dagger that Jameis drilled to Godwin to beat the Saints was one of my favorite moments of all last year.
    Watching pompous Sean Payton have to walk off that field, in our house, with a loss…… was a beautiful thing.

    Like everyone else, I am bummed that we missed out on the G Nelson in the draft, but so what? You are going to miss out on someone you like in EVERY draft no matter where you finish.

    JUST WIN THE GAME.
    GO BUCS.

  56. AlteredEgo Says:

    Demon…I was happy to win the last game last year the way they did even if it meant dropping in the draft. I thought the win was a good sign and just what the team needed for the off season……this year not so much..I am not hoping the lose…but I’d be happy with a higher pick in April than a win in December when Black Monday is very real for the staff…so if the win and coaches are gone with a big roster turn over the win mean NOTHING…..NOTHING….NOTHING….

  57. Tvan1011 Says:

    For those that cant support tanking, would rather have Bradley Chubb or Vita? 1 game we should have lost last year the difference in getting an all pro for the next 10 years. Which one is better for the franchise? I say let rojo and kappa play and tank away.

  58. JimmyJack Says:

    Yeah Demon. That play and that win against the Saints was one of my favorite memories from last year. Everybody called the game meaningless but this team had to want revenge from what happened in the first game. The term meaningless gets thrown around like it’s a universal term but it’s not and makes for a lazy argument.

    We don’t get many good memories from this team and excuse me for not wanting to throw them out for a draft pick. That something you’ll never get back. Unlike draft choice which are tradeable.

    Just wish there was one local media guy to stand up for fans that be hurt from seeing their team quit. Any Buc fan I know or see I’ve asked and none yet say they want us to lose. The poisionus idea of our team quitting for a draft slot may be out of touch with a great %.

  59. OneBucPerson Says:

    If we lose this game we have the potential to go to 4th overall, if we win we have the potential to drop out of the top 10. Which sounds more appealing?

  60. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    JimmyJack Says:
    “We don’t get many good memories from this team and excuse me for not wanting to throw them out for a draft pick.”

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Damn. THAT is literally the line of the day, JimmyJack.
    There is NOTHING that can be added to that.
    Well done, sir.
    Go BUCS.
  61. SOEbuc Says:
    Joe
    THIS IS SUCH A DISGRACEFUL ARTICLE!!! Especially for a man like yourself who spends his days usually writing good articles and keeping up to date with my team.
    I’M A TRUE BUC FAN AND I WOULD NEVER WANT TO SEE MY TEAM TANK A GAME OR SEASON. I want to see my team win every Sunday, especially on the last game of the year when I don’t get to see a regular season game till next September. We’d still be in the top ten draft order.
    Shame, shame, we know your name. Very disappointed.
  62. TheNorm Says:
    I bleed pewter is a moron and probably hungry waiting for his EBT card to be full again.
    Idiot. Acting like your feelings matter.
    If any players job depends on this last game he probably isn’t worth being on the team anyway.
    So stfu moron.
  63. PSLBob Says:
    I have to admit, I didn’t read all of the posts, but I totally agree with those that feel playing to lose breeds a losing culture. Why not just forfeit the game? That’s more respectful for the fans. Hey, we don’t want to win this game so we’re just going to forfeit. That way we can get a higher draft pick that won’t pan out anyway. The draft is a crap shoot and Licht doesn’t seem to play the game very well. It’s just a bad philosophy. There are no good arguments to justify losing on purpose. Building through the draft doesn’t mean you have to have a real high draft pick every year.
  64. Tampa Bay Demon Says:
    Haha SOE, yes…
    As Pat & Aaron would say….
    Shame…..
    Shame…..
    Shame…..
    We still love ya JOE, and thanx for all you do, and for this forum that i now seem to be addicted to….
    but,
    Shame….
    😉
  65. PSLBob Says:
    So Joe, you want to play another exhibition game art the end of the season.
  66. Bob in Valrico Says:
    For all the fans that go to games and those that watch religiously then you deserve a win. Its entirely possible Jameis may have one of his better games.
    But at the end of the day we happen to lose by a missed field goal.We get second prize. Even with a loss we might
    have a better chance to get better.
  67. Buccfan37 Says:
    The tank has been most of the season. Stay the course.
  68. From76 Says:
    Play the players you want to evaluate for next season. Don’t risk injuring your best players. This season was over before Smith was fired. When the now is out of reach. Start reaching for next year. That means evaluate the backups and get a higher draft pick. Just don’t miss like it seems with Winston.
  69. TOM Says:
    Since some fans say that the Falcons want to lose to get a higher draft pick, lets see if Matty Ice starts & plays most of the game as well as their other starters. I’m saying if the Falcons don’t play or start Ryan then the Bucs shouldn’t start JW.
  70. MadMax Says:
    If CB Bryce Hall makes his decision to come out after this belk bowl, we’re going to need that higher draft pick. He’s 6’3 and leads in passes defensed. Thats who we draft first if we’re serious about improving our secondary. Enough with drafting short cb’s. We need a guy who can match up against the tall receivers.
  71. Aaron Says:
    If we just keeping doing what we’ve been doing – it should result in a lose. No need to try to lose – we just do that naturally.
  72. MadMax Says:
    Lol, just read a few posts….you guys kill me, hahaha. So hoping for a loss for a better draft pick in order to win more next year and the following years is shameful? Man you snowflakes are easily triggered….you guys are probably wanting to keep Coach K too. Oh well, losing culture here doesnt change until we start winning, I get that. But theres going to be a new Coaching staff, possibly even a new GM. So whats the harm in giving them higher draft picks? Its not like last year’s meaningless last game win that couldve meant something, but then the news of jaboo comes out and he’s suspended….darned if we win, darned if we dont. Wont really matter anyway, LOL!
  73. ben Says:
    draft is more exciting with a highrt pick then winning the last game which means nothing ..
  74. Costa Rica John Says:
    My guess is both teams are tanking the game for the draft pick. It might end up a tie.
  75. stpetebucsfan Says:
    People simply overrate the draft. FIRST!!! This is not an either or situation. It’s not win the game and lose a draft pick…or lose it and get another pick…it’s simply a half dozen or so positions in the draft.
    This means in one of the greatest crap shoots there is…you “improve” your odds somewhat but not off the charts. If there is an INDIVIDUAL or two in the draft that is worth one or two I get that…but after that….MEH!!!
    If we win we still get to draft in the first round!!! If we lose we draft a half dozen spots higher. That’s not going to change the direction of this franchise. Our team is now so far beyond ONE player to rebound…and the ONE player most important to ANY NFL team is already in house…don’t need to draft him…Jameis is next year’s QB. Whether that is good or bad time will tell but it means we don’t need to worry about drafting a QB in the first round…so unless there’s a Saquan Barkley in this draft there’s nobody worth getting that hot over…Bosa? Good maybe great player but he’s not going to single handedly turn around a franchise or even a defense.
    We need a LOT more than a player or two.
  76. Kansas95Buc Says:
    TANKING IS FOR LOSERS
  77. Wesley Says:
    Only thing is Licht and Koetter are trying to save their jobs.
  78. down in the dirt Doug Says:
    Demon–amen to your remarks–you are a true fan.I have memories in many sports teams having great moments. sometimes on a gloomy day it makes me smile to remember great plays. belichick has traded down many times.Worked out well for him.we need a smart coach and new gm.
  79. MadMax Says:
    ^and belicheck has had Brady at QB…..just saying
  80. down in the dirt Doug Says:
    MadMax–there are no totally right remarks but , I bow to you on that remark!!!
  81. JimmyJack Says:
    Everybody keeps bringing up the Saints win last year and it’s a very narrow minded complaint.
    The draft slot we winded up with was one of the most valuable places to be. How many 2nd and third rounders did we get back? We wound up with a ton of premium choices last year which we wouldn’t have gotten had we won the last game.
    It don’t take a fool to see that the 2018 draft could have(could have) been franchise changing. Our GM just happened to butcher all his 2nd and 3rd round choices. The Saints win didn’t hurt us a bit. The GM did.
    The kicker to all of it is that Vita V can be expected to consistently play like he has the last few games. When that happens he will be a ProBowler. Then we’ll stop hearing about the Saints win & it will be time to whine and cry about our 2019 rookies.
  82. Joe Says:
    I bleed pewter is a moron and probably hungry waiting for his EBT card to be full again.
    That’s a new one. 🙂
  83. stpetebucsfan Says:
    JJ
    Great points. It’s not where you pick it’s who you pick. And then there is the age old debate about whether to even take a high pick or cash in for multiple picks.
    As you pointed out JJ imagine our draft if Licht hadn’t hosed it.
    His DB’s were average…one might improve to a good player…of course ROJO was about as bad a second round bust as you can get.
    If Licht had cashed in on the opportunity all the of the sudden the win against N.O. looks different.
    AGAIN….Bobby Beathard one of the GOAT GM’s…Over the course of his 38 years in the NFL, his teams competed in seven Super Bowls winning four of them.
    Beathard dumped first round picks EVERY chance he got. He had to get return value in the picks he traded but he never hesitated in trying to improve his odds by getting more picks to compensate for all the mistakes made by EVERY GM!!!
    What good are high draft picks when the people picking them are rocks? Numerous great players slip thru the draft every year, but the best coaches & GMs consistently scoop them up.
    The Bucs could have 6 first round draft picks and it will still amount to nothing with Licht and Koetter at the helm.
  85. Brian Says:
    By this logic, wouldnt the Falcons also be trying to lose this game?
  86. Calbucsfan Says:
    Recall last season’s finale? Might have been able to trade up one or two slots to draft Giants RB Barkley if the Bucs had not tried so damn hard to win last year. They may lose tomorrow, but it won’t be intentional.
  87. DBS Says:
    Losing should not be a problem as long as the defense holds the Falcons offense under 21 points.
  88. Elita Vita Says:
    Lost the chance to draft Q. Nelson elite oline player last year just to win that last meaningless game. An elite Oline player we might have for the next 10 years. Instead the Bucs needed to win that game to gain that “momentum” instead which ultimately resulted in a 5-10 or 6-10 season this year. What a colossal waste!
  89. Jimbo Says:
    The biggest irony: the Bucs taking today for a higher draft pick and retaining Licht.
    Altered,
    Very understandable points that ya made, man. It does feel like big winds of change are a-comin.
  91. Tampa Bay Demon Says:
    Altered,
    By the way, i didnt get a chance to shout this yesterday.
    You shared an idea that is one of the BEST that I have EvER heard, if there is a way to somehow do it.
    For the teams NOT going to the playoffs… WINS ay the end of the year dictate higher draft order.
    Can you all even fricking IMAGINE how that would spice things up for teams in our position?
    Dude, that is genious.
  92. Tampa Bay Demon Says:
    down in the dirt Doug,
    Cheers, man! Thanks for the shout out.
    We as BUCS fans are going to have those memorable days again… and lots of them.
    And when they do.. it will be that much sweeter!
