Talking In Circles

November 10th, 2018

Strange QB talk.

Bucs Bit-O-Honey-snacking coach Dirk Koetter made his weekly appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio last night. And when the subject of Bucs quarterbacks came up, Koetter sounded like he was working for a politician’s recently-ended campaign.

Koetter said a lot but didn’t say anything; he sounded both irked and happy with his quarterbacks.

In a way, it almost sounded as if Koetter is holding a grudge against America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, for that hassle he got involved in 2 1/2 years ago with an Uber driver, which resulted in a forced three-week timeout sentenced by NFL strongman Roger Goodell to open this season.

Will Jameis see the field again this year? Joe couldn’t tell from Koetter’s words but it didn’t sound promising.

“I feel like we have two good quarterbacks in Jameis and in Fitz,” Koetter told co-hosts Gil Brandt and Alex Marvez. “Fitz is our starter right now. He has a ton of experience. He has played well when he has been out there this year.

“I’m not looking to switch quarterbacks every week. I never intended for any of this to happen. We had an unusual situation to start the year. And here we are. I’m not apologizing for anything we are doing at quarterback. We are trying to figure out a way to get a win on a weekly basis. Whatever we think we have to do to do that, that’s what we are going to try do.

“I think Fitz is going to play well this week and if Jameis ends up coming in I think Jameis will play well.”

Joe really doesn’t know how to take any of that. But this is the biggest obstacle for folks building a case to retain Koetter if the Bucs end up with a losing season.

We all know the main reason Koetter was hired was to develop Jameis. By benching him, that’s a public confession he failed.

Perhaps the only way to spin that is if Koetter knows DeSean Jackson is bad for Jameis and his way around that problem is to keep Jameis on the bench and out of harm’s way. Even that is a stretch.

Joe could understand if Team Glazer said to Koetter, “Well, you didn’t work out with Jameis but the rest of the team is doing OK.” But it’s not. Not even remotely.

Yeah, the passing game is strong (often when trailing by multiple scores). No matter who is defensive coordinator, the way the defense is barreling towards the worst outfit in the 99-year history of the NFL will come back on the head coach.

This team is turning into one of the biggest NFL soap operas Joe has ever seen. A franchise quarterback was benched, maybe for good. A wide receiver whines about wanting another quarterback and when he gets his wish, he asks for a trade. Then he doesn’t get his trade.

A star player dictating when he plays, not the coach. A historically bad defense. A defensive coordinator getting run two weeks after the head coach stated that would do no good. No running game. Draft picks not working out. A team with no quarterback and no running game having the second-best offense in the league.

Thinking about this team makes Joe downright dizzy if not nauseous.

It’s time to stop saying ‘Pro Bowler’ Jameis Winston. It’s no long apt and he got there as a sub anyway. Whatcha say we go with ‘BB gun shooting, crotch grabbing, INT throwing, etc. etc.. You get the idea. Kind of a Peter King take. And you’re welcome for the suggestion.

Stuff like this, quotes from Koetter that make very little sense, like his comment about being careful talking about PD’s because it’s tricky, are what make me wish that we’d just done what I knew was the right move after last year and fired Koetter and replaced Licht.

I wanted the G’s to go out, write Jim Harbough a blank check, and hire the wrongfully fired Dave Gettleman who is a legit top 12 GM to take lichts Job.

Guaranteed if we had done so, we’d have made much better picks in the draft and free agency, and we’d be boat-racing the Saints and Panthers for 1st place in the division.

Instead, we’re mired in the same muck that we always are under the HC GM combo of JL and DK outside of one flukey 5 game stretch in 2016. 3 straight years of starting 3-5. I’m sick of this garbage.

  4. HeavyE Says:

Yeah, let’s keep on losing with #14, it’s a BucLife!!!!!

  5. Bucoutahere Says:

Fitzpatrick is gonna lead this team to a superbowl this year….

    Clueless Bucs fan

  6. Dewey Selmon Says:

Heavy, If the Bucs lose tomorrow I would bet that Jameis starts the rest of the season and Dirk is dead coach walking.

  9. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

glazers have zero spines and no leadership what so ever. they should just put this fool out of his misery at this point. yet all you delusional optimists are going to be convinced the glazers will hire the right people this time even though they have not even attempted to field a respectable product in nearly two decades.

  10. ben Says:

Who has the better red zone % …Fitz by far …. Who has the worst % of interceptions and fumbles …Winston

  11. Pete I Says:

Might as well go back to losing with Jameis, then perhaps his swallow brigade will finally get it. Unlikely as they are addicted but hopefully they can see the truth. Best QB in franchise history…Hahahahahahaha

  12. Kalind Says:

It’s win or go home for Koetter tmrw. If they get embarrassed, he doesn’t make it to monday

  13. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Perhaps the only way to spin that is if Koetter knows DeSean Jackson is bad for Jameis and his way around that problem is to keep Jameis on the bench and out of harm’s way. Even that is a stretch.” Uhh, ‘a stretch’? You really are becoming the Grand Master of Understatement Joe. When the whole team sucks, does anyone really think that blaming DJax will solve the problem? Oh but wait, our Scapegoat escaped. We need another … OK, DJax will do.

You used about every name in that article EXCEPT JASON LICHT … the architect of this comedy-drama. No running game? Sure, blame the coaches. Historically bad defense? Yup it’s the coaches fault again. Draft picks not working out? Surely that’s on the coaches. Musical QBs? Definitely Koetter’s fault (if HE’D been driving that Uber like he should’ve been none of this would’ve happened). Oh, and you forgot kickers … many, many kickers. Selected by? Nah, too easy.

  14. HeavyE Says:

@ Dewey, I hope You are right! This coach has got to go……

  15. Jean Lafitte Says:

Koetter didn’t ask for any of this drama from Joe’s America’s QB, Pro Bowler, and Crab Leg stealin’, Uber hasselin’ extraordinaire, Jameis Winston. What does Joe want to hear? That JW is the greatest of all time and he made a mistake trying to win the first three games without him with his job on the line. smh The man is fighting to keep his job.

  16. Rob Says:

When Joe’s favorite qb of all time, hence the silly nickname he dubs him even though it really is nonsense, is forced to ride the bench due to repeatedly turning the ball over, Joe is losing his mind. The owners, coach, and team knows exactly what they have in Jameis, flashes of franchise like qb brilliance, mixed in with an ungodly amount of unexplainable careless turnovers, with a dash of bizarre “eating W’s” which I still shake my head at, along with off the field alleged transgressions they knew could hamper his promising career. I won’t go on because I don’t dislike Jameis. I just don’t think he is a safe franchise qb because of his undeniable faults. I also don’t blame Jameis for our $hitty defense. No one could win consistently when you give up 5 touchdowns a game, sometimes before halftime. Don’t talk about the Bucs having a great offense no matter who the qb is because the only stat that really matters is wins and we have freaking three. Blow it up, fire Dirk for not getting the job done, fire Licht for putting together a team on underperformers on defense. Try to get an experienced NFL coach in here and start over without Jameis UNLESS the new coach wants to try and correct his turnover issues if that is even possible. Go Bucs!

  17. Cobraboy Says:

Perhaps he’s “under orders” from above.

  18. From the north Says:

Koetters job is to win football games regardless of who plays qb. If Koetter won 10 or 11 games do you think he is going anywhere?

  19. Jean Lafitte Says:

Koetters job is to win football games regardless of who plays qb

    ^^^^
    stupid …kind of an oxymoron

  20. Darin Says:

Dirk has same team issues every year. He isnt a head coach. Always bs goin on while he has been hc. No idea how he didn’t get canned after he quit in Arz beginning of last season. Id have fired him in Arz. Yes he could still get the flight home you Dirk cry babies(Realist). The Buc cancer has a name. Klueless Koetter.

  21. Jmarkbuc Says:

“Koetters job is to win football games regardless of who plays qb. If Koetter won 10 or 11 games do you think he is going anywhere?”

You are clearly out of your mind…#DeadDorkWalking

Then again you are from the North😏

  22. Eric Says:

just a few more shovel fulls and your grave will be complete.

    Keep it up Dirk.

  23. Not there yet Says:

Lol he’s saying if we get blown out this week then Winston will play and play well. He just can’t say that it’s a likely possibility. He started Fitz because he knows if this home win is an ugly loss and glazers see fans turn on the team the debate is over and so is his head coaching career. They’ll probably do just enough to lose or eek out a win. First two weeks of the season were before anyone knew how to play their weapons. It was figured out easily and now his ability to adjust his game plan is exposed

  24. Stevbobucsfan Says:

I just want 1 question anwsered. People say Mccoy and Winston are garbage you can’t get no trade value for them in a trade and so on and so on. Well the last 2 games neither player played still lose so is it Mccoy and Winston that’s causing all this losing

  25. Buddy Says:

#KLUELESSKOETTER straight up LIED and stabbed Lovie Smith in the back to TEAM GLAZER. He has not done anything to help Jameis and he has regressed.

  26. RTG Bucs Says:

Enough of this Fit show!! He is a BACKUP quarterback! I get that Koetter is trying to win and save his job but the reality of it is, that it just isn’t going to happen. Not this year. Just for giggles, say we do make the playoffs, then what? We would definitely be one and done. (Zero defense and Zero running game) Are we going to give Fitz a huge new contract and make him a permanent starter? NO, that isn’t happening. Even Licht isn’t that dumb. We have got to look to the future, there is a lot invested in Winston. Is he the guy? Hell, I don’t know, he has definitely looked terrible at times but promising at times as well. What about Griffin? The thing is, like it or not, this season is OVER and we need to determine if our future QB is on the roster or not. I really don’t care who is behind center I root for the team and Fitz is definitely not the solution. And who cares if DJax gets his panties in a wad over who the QB is? He will not be here next year anyway.

  27. D1 Says:

    Buddy,

What did koetter straight up lie about?

  28. BucTown Says:

He gots no idea D1. Buddy be makin’ shizz up.

  29. D1 Says:

    Buctown,

    Lol….give him a chance. Could be interesting……

    Pro bowl 2

    Which is the better player?

  31. LakeLand Says:

    DI

    I’ll take the 43-19 record
    3 playoffs appearances
    11-5
    9-5
    13-3
    10-6

    I wouldn’t take the 23-25
    1 playoff appearance
    13-3
    4-12
    6-10

Matt Ryan threw 2022 passes during his 4 seasons with Mularkey
He threw 1894 passes with Koetter in 3 seasons

That’s the problem with these ” One Dimensional” Coaches like Koetter
    The QB/Team has great stats
    But the team stinks

They get “Fired” for a reason

  32. LakeLand Says:

    **QB/Offense has great stats**
    But the team stinks

Matt Ryan averaged 505 passes a season with Mularkey

He averaged 631 passes a year with Koetter

He averages 559 passes during his 3 seasons with Dan Quinn

Dirk Koetter loves to throw the ball
    Especially the deep ball

  33. LakeLand Says:

Mike Mularkley wasn’t concerned about Matt Ryan getting Pro Bowl numbers

He was putting the team in a position to win football games

  34. LakeLand Says:

But the fans in Tampa love individual stats

They could care less about winning

Hence the 11 year playoff drought

  35. D1 Says:

    Lakeland,

Two different things…Matt Ryan had his best years under Koetter. The first with shanahan was a backwards step the first year. You didnt argue team you pointed to Mattys play under Koetter and sorry but the numbers prove you incorrect.

The Falcons had the worst offensive line in football so passing was the best option. Now who was the oc when the went to the division playoffs?
Now if you are interested, there’s quite a few stories written about Matt Ryan’s play would be better if koetter returned.

  36. D1 Says:

Mularkey wasn’t interested in pro bowl numbers for his QB…..well I hate to say but that’s how QB’ s are measured…by the results.
Ryan threw more yds,TD s had a better QBR and went to 2 of 3 pro bowls.

    That’s better……

  37. D1 Says:

Fans in Tampa are looking for wins and if they don’t get them they look at stats to make them feel better or closer to winning…..often it’s to justify a player’s seemingly bad performance with just the right stats..

  38. D1 Says:

Koetter got fired because of Smith. Don’t be surprised if Koetter is the next atl oc.

  39. LakeLand Says:

    D1

So 23-25 is better than 43-19?

    Football is a team sport

  40. LakeLand Says:

    Matt Ryan

Record with Mike Mularkey as OC- 43-19

With Dirk Koetter as OC- 23-25

    With Kyle Shanahan as OC-19-13

    With Steve Sarkisian as OC-14-10

  41. James Walker Says:

Koetter’s response sounds honest to me.
