Quiet GMC

November 6th, 2018

Discusses silent stance.

So yesterday, Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy was cornered by the Tampa Bay pen and mic club in the locker room. It was the first time GMC has spoken since before his calf injury.

GMC is not a hostile guy, so it was a bit curious why he went Operation Shutdown all of a sudden. He explained that, indirectly he clammed up because of Father Dungy.

In short, GMC said roughly a month ago he heard Father Dungy on TV say if you win say little and if you lose say less. GMC took that to heart.

“There’s not really a lot of talking that needs to be done,” GMC said. “So that’s why I haven’t been doing interviews, because it’s just like nine years in, the defense is playing bad, how much talking do I really need to do? ‘Oh, we need to fix this. Oh, we need to fix that.’ It’s just you either get it done or just don’t say nothing.”

Exactly. What’s GMC supposed to say? Whatever he says fans are going to attack him. Like with America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, when asked about his picks he said he had to get better. Sure, who would argue with that?

But after hearing that six or seven times with no change in results, all Jameis’ words did was ignite more anger with fans.

GMC is right. Sometimes less is more. After a while, stating the obvious over and over while watching the same results over and over is more harmful than enlightening.

Is he actually getting angry? One can only wish…

  2. over him Says:

still sulking because he is not a captain – get rid of cancer93!!!

  3. Joe Blahak Says:

The fact is…The most overrated players on the team are WinSTUNNED and McBOY. Two supposed “leaders” who continually sh*t their pants. Anyone who thinks these two guys make his team better, be it the play on the field or verbal spins off the field, doesn’t have a clue about football or are being paid to defend them at any cost. They are the problem way more than any solution. Can’t wait for the day these two are gone!

  4. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

I noticed after his sack when usually he will dance or groin thrust the air, but this game he got a sack and just walked off the field like businesses as usual. Hmm where has this been 9 years?
That’s how a leader should act. Remind those young guys that 1 sack, 1 PBU, 1 win ain’t ish. Even a broke clock is right twice a day.
    Too little too late though.
I like Gerald and think he is still a quality player but this year taught me something. We can lose just fine without him.
    Go YUCS!!

  5. BurgDweller Says:

GMC should just get clips from past interviews and play them for the press. He has said it all when it comes to bad defenses.

  6. Javier SP Says:

Way to set the tempo of this defense. Once again no leadership from 93. Time to move on from him. We’ve lost and won with him and we will win and lose without him.

  7. Eric Says:

    Help me out here.

Is he still in the running for Defensive Player of the Year as Buckner suggested at training camp?

  8. MadMax Says:

He;s not the only one quiet….not many posts here the past few weeks.

Bucs are losing fans, prob temporary though until we start winning if and when thats starts happening.

It was a great start to the season though….had it going on till JW came back. Not all his fault i know, but something with this team’s moral fell off at that point. Oh well, might as well play the jit out of him to see what happens the rest of the season….if we lose the rest, its a high draft pick for a QB and we can let him go.

  9. Season Is Over Says:

This is what happens when you build someone into someone they aren’t and then they have to be that person everyone thought they were led to believe they were. 16 million per season and that is the coherent response the city deserves?

  10. unbelievable Says:

LOL so when he talks ya’ll want him to shut up, and when he’s quiet ya’ll are mad that he’s not speaking like a leader.

excuse me but, bucs have not won anything in 16 years nor have they even competed in a game that matters in over a decade so where are these mysterious wins you speak off when making a false statement as We have won with him.

cancer93 is and will always be known as the softest player in team history and the face of the basement years. unfortunately, with the dysfunctional organization, there is no end in sight for the basement years. He will pass the torch to some overrated fan favorite because this is his last year in Tampa thank god.

  13. pelbuc Says:

Batboy and JW hopefully won’t be on the squad next year. They are the leaders of losers!

  14. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

After his sack last game he didn’t celebrate and just walked straight off the field.

    I liked it.

  15. DBS Says:

And when he is gone it will be just like joe said. Same people will start in on the next one because he is not Sapp.

  16. DBS Says:

Guess we should just start going thru the team yelling, He’s no Brooks. He’s no Rice. He’s no Barber. He’s no Lynch. Who do we have that plays to that level? And don’t say JPP because he is no Rice.

  17. 813bucboi Says:

he sees the writing on the wall…..he knows he’s done here and he’s upset….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  18. Atrain300 Says:

This sort of BS bothers me. What draws more attention to yourself (and away from your team)? Instead of just answering standard questions with canned answers and at least pretending you care, GMC decides to play “quiet” because the team is losing. Which inevitably draws attention to his pouting and makes him look like a sore loser.

  19. Loyaltotheend Says:

Rather silence over all the cliches we here from Jameis

  20. WyldKat Says:

You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry.

Exactly. Now they will focus on Vita Vea and constantly questions this kid as well.

  22. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Sounds like he wanted to get traded and didn’t.

  23. zwak Says:

It’s just you either get it done or just don’t say nothing.”

Until you start getting it done Shhhh..

  24. SOEbuc Says:

He’s a good player and is an asset, but just not worth the bills. He’s going to go on to some other defense and return to rookie mode because that’s classic Bucs.

  25. Lamarcus Says:

No C on chest means he is shutting it down

  26. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Finally GMC accepting that he’s a big fat softie and shutting the f up. Talk with sacks softie!!

  27. Rod Munch Says:

    Grrrrr…. he smiled…. grrrrr… I’m so triggered, how dare someone smile on a football field… grrrrrr… he’s not a leader…. grrrrr… he likes comic books…. grrrr…. I’m so angry… grrrr….

  28. AlteredEgo Says:

He does his talking on the field…..

    Do you mean, “hear”?

  30. Bucsfanman Says:

It’s what fans have asked of this sorry a$$ team, not just GMC, for years, “SHUT UP AND PLAY!”
What can be said of this defense? Really?!

  31. JimmyJack Says:

I’m glad that the words of retired coach’s are affecting this guy. Wonder what Dirk’s message is.

  32. Aceofaerospace Says:

You mean he didn’t even start dancing on the sidelines after the sack? I’m shocked!

  33. JimmyJack Says:

Rod…….how about grrrrr he has been a stiff for the last two seasons?

  34. DB55 Says:

    Luv

Da’Shawn Hand is tearing it up but wtfdwk ammirite?

    22 tackles, 2 sacks and 2ff but hey ……

  35. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I’m ashamed to cheer for the same team as some of you idiots. Literally the exact same people that were angry at him for talking too much are now upset because he’s “sulking”. Smh

  36. thee good ol'e days Says:

50 sacks 9.5 seasons, aaron donald 49 sacks since 2014 twice in the top ten, why is gmc getting paid like he’s a superstar? no heart, no drive, no effort, what has this team won with him survey says zero, i know he takes away double teams thus freeing up the rest of the line, how many damn times have we heard this song and dance routine? and how many different lineman have been brought in to finally get him over the hump? and what is the hump? survey says double digit sacks, and how many times has gmc gotten double digit sacks in a season survey says, zero, his best years were 2013 thru 2015 when he got 9,5-8.5-8.5 sacks the last two has gotten worse with 7.0- 6.0 and this year so far 2.0 he is a mediocre player at best in my opinion his best season was 5 years ago and he is 30 years old time for this show to end

  37. Rod Munch Says:

JimmyJack – Six straight selections to the pro-bowl (that includes the last two years)… but he’s terrible. LOL!

Your ability to scout players leaves a lot to be desired.

  38. GhostofSchiano Says:

After a while, stating the obvious over and over while watching the same results over and over is more harmful than enlightening.

Paying hard earned GhostofSchiano loot for Game tickets, merchandise, gas driving from Orlando to Ray jay and back. Time spent on Sundays watching the same horrible game play, letting my blood pressure rise, heart rate triple, the screaming at the TV over and over and over. Your right Joe, It is harmful. Harmful to my sanity, health and finances.

  39. GhostofSchiano Says:

Can anyone confirm during the fourth quarter around the 9 or 7 minute mark there was a camera shot of the Bucs bench and it appeared that McCoy had a magazine in his hand. It could have been a Batman comic book, he appeared to be reading it or maybe scanning it. But it does look like it at first. Then he abruptly put it inside a notebook (maybe a playbook?)

Maybe someone caught it and scolded him privately or threatened to go public with it? It could explain the silent treatment.

  40. JimmyJack Says:

Rod I said last two seasons…….Mentioning those other five probowls is purely irrevelant.

And since your so concerned with my scouting ability I should let you know that your is really bad. Mentioning probowls is a very weak way to scout a player.

  41. BazookaChip Says:

Joe, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE quit with the stupid “America’s QB” and any other “intro” that you have for players or sports reporters. It makes me want to stop coming to the site.

  42. Not there yet Says:

Think about this for a minute Gerald McCoy, Roy Miller, Akeem Spence, Te’o-Nesheim, Gholston, bowers, clayborn and had the number 1 rush defense

Danny gorrer, Leonard Johnson, Jonathan banks, rashaad melvin oh and banged up Darelle revis learning to play zone, worst pass defense in the nfl with Greg Schiano and bill Sheridan as d coordinator

Dirk is about to shatter that record. Geraldine is so average but a lot of it is scheme. Time to clean house, only McCoy and revis we’re making big money and this team is playing worse

  43. Doctor_berto Says:

Hopefully he is part of the house cleaning next season

  44. Joe Says:

Joe, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE quit with the stupid “America’s QB” and any other “intro” that you have for players or sports reporters. It makes me want to stop coming to the site.

No can do man. You’re asking Joe not to be Joe.

  45. Mike Johnson Says:

Personally, I think GMc is being smart. he’s talked enough over the years. Hell, let somebody else talk. The guys played with the Bucs now for many years. he’s probably as depressed as most of us are. I would not say anything either if I were a player on this team.

  46. 911bucs Says:

Was the dance party before or after the Dungy comments??

  47. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

lol @ joe begging, quotation using, america’s QB hating, one foot out the door BazookaChip

No can do man. You’re asking Joe not to be Joe.
    —————————————————————————————-

Why don’t you do like you do on some other introductions? For example –

The once suspended, crab leg stealing, rape accused – settled out of court, Glazer loot abused, turnover machine, “W” eating, got to get better, America’s second string quarterback, one pro bowl in four years, Jameis Winston.

    More accurate at least.

  49. Dooshlarue Says:

    Just go away Gerald.
Maybe take all that cash and move your soft ass to Hawaii.
I know someone who will gladly be your poi-boi.

  50. JimmyJack Says:

I want McCoy outta my face. Done with this guy.

  51. Anonymous Says:

Hahaha,, all in fun BazookaChip, you had to have known that was comin!

  52. Buc believer Says:

Can’t wait for the dancing queen to finally get off this team.

  53. Kansas95Buc Says:

    @Joe
Stay as you are my man

  54. JimmyJack Says:

    “Don’t make me laugh”

  55. BigMacAttack Says:

I give Gerald total props for this. Not a fan of his any more but truer words never spoken. They should all listen to Tony Dungy more often. The Bucs need him to come around a lot more.

  56. BigMacAttack Says:

    Ghost of Schiano, Lmao!!!
I think Gerald is hearing the fans loud and clear. It’s not too late for him to really step up his game. I like the guy and always have. He just hasn’t woo’d me with his play or lack of making plays. I’d love to see him finally takeover a game and get this defense going. He has the talent and ability to do it. He just needs to get out of his own way and put it altogether. If he does, JPP will be right along side and the others will follow suit. Just do it man!!! Get fired up Gerald. Get mean and find yourself on top. There’s no reason this team can’t get on a roll and save everybody’s jobs. Except Licht, he needs to go.

  57. BringBucsBack Says:

If only Dungy had said this 9 years ago.

His handling of the media is one of many things that Belacheat gets right!

  58. JimmyJack Says:

Big Mac I love ya bro!! Your comment starts to get me fired up about this team a little bit. All the sudden I start getting excited……………..Unfortunately buddy there is a sad fact that kills all that excitement very swiftly.

The fact is McCoy presence on the field has really faded. Specifically in the last two years. The stats will bear that out as well if your a stat guy.

In all of last year I saw him play two really good games. Vs the Jets and vs the Phins. That is 2 out of 24 games. I think it’s safe to assume those two game had more to do with a matchup problem then anything. They didn’t come from sheer will and determination so it’s basically unrealistic to expect any more.

But hey maybe we will get lucky and McCoy will run into 6 more mismatches and lead us to the playoffs.

  59. JimmyJack Says:

It’s noteworthy that Washington has their two guards injured right now. McCoy might have himself a great game for us.

Might be wise to temper expectations if that happens.

  60. Rod Munch Says:

JimmyJack – Yes, don’t count 5-pro bowls. LOL! You do realize it’s coaches and players who select the guys right? You know, the people that actually play and coach the games? If it was purely fan voting then you’d have a point, most fans, such as yourself, are completely clueless – however even if that was the case how would he get in considering the Bucs are probably near the bottom of the league in terms of fan support? You’re just another member of the message board lynch mob, a follower, a guy who reads a bumper sticker and then repeats it as gospel. People who actually play and watch the game, and people who aren’t dopes, know how good of a player GMC is, but he triggers you because he helps a guy up so you say he’s “soft” and “doesn’t play hard” and isn’t a “leader” – all the same copy and paste stuff the other dopes say. Do yourself a favor and stop being so easily lead by mobs, then you’d be less boring.

    God bless.

  61. JimmyJack Says:

Yes Munch Pro Bowls don’t count. Just like preseason games.

Like I said McCoy made a difference in 2 out of the last 24 games. Do you care to tell me which other games he impacted?

Notice I’m not calling you clueless or telling you how stupid you are and I’m not trying to be sarcastic……..I’m genuinely asking a question. And I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt if you have an answer. I’ll go back and watch the game and later give you my thoughts……Heck May I’ll notice something about McCoys game I haven’t before.

I’m all cool for arguing about something. But if I ask a question at least give a answer. Outwise get the crock outta my face with this probowl nonsense

  62. joestang Says:

I guess we wont be hearing mccoy talk any time soon. actions speak louder than words.

  63. Phillybuc Says:

He doesn’t need to say anything, his stats speak loud and clear. He’s robbing this team of $12.5mm and producing zip. Look at the production of the other top tier DT’s in the league, he’s not in the same hemisphere. Time for this over paid, under performing steaming pile to go. Great sideline dancer though…

  64. JimmyJack Says:

Hey Munch….I can respect the fact that my opinions hold no water over any NFL players or coaches opinion but I will have you know they some of those players and coaches agree with me. Ian Beckles would be one example.

And I also don’t mind your assumptions about me but please do not present them as fact. You and I both know that I never once have said that he is soft or that he doesn’t play hard.

But it’s a free country…..I guess if you wanna make up BS about me you have that right…….If that’s the way you gotta be I’ll just adapt.

  65. Season Is Over Says:

Anyone care to guess why the players didn’t vote McCoy on the top 100? I guess it is just the message board posters keeping McCoy down. Lmao! His declining and sporadic play was exposed years ago. When does McCoy start making everyone better? When do we as fans reap the benefit of dealing with the burden that was his contract for so many years? Why did they draft Vita Spence if McCoy wasn’t in the plans? McCoy makes 16 million per year unless you are saying he is taking a pay cut or the Bucs will cut him early. Making 16 million per year I would like to think the team thinks McCoy is a superstar. I’m fairly certain that was him on the 100 x 100 foot banner on the side of the building when I drove by it today. When do we expect more from the veterans? Week 10?

  66. BigMacAttack Says:

No matter what I’m always a Buc Fan. I always want what’s best for the team. I don’t mind being wrong if it means winning. Winning teams are happy teams. Losing teams unravel quickly. Fans get upset and they look for answers. We all do it. How can we fix it? If they were winning our critiques would be far fewer. There is no doubt the majority of our disagreements are a symptom of their losing, continuously, losing, a lot, for a long time. I told them to take my season tickets this year and stick it. I’m glad I did but I’m still a fan, from the couch, or bar, not drinking overpriced beer. I’m going to bash when they keep losing but will hope they keep winning. I won’t hold my breath. We’ve all seen players load this year and quit on plays. It’s prevalent. One thing that I now see as fact, that before I ignored, is that Jason Licht has blown a ton of high draft picks, in a short amount of time. He is the single biggest cause of the losing IMO. You can’t waste all of those picks and field a winning team. He should fall on the sword and spare everyone else. The Number 1 Culprit. If Koetter has decent players everywhere that Licht missed, it would be a different team. I can’t Blane Dirk near as much as Licht.

  67. BigMacAttack Says:

    Autocorrect sux

  68. Rod Munch Says:

JimmyJack – Thanks bud, I’ll keep it up!

Also Beckles is there to fill radio time – but players that are still playing right now, that are on the field, and coaches that have to go against GMC, say he’s wrong – and they don’t just give PC quotes to the media as to not offend people, they vote on it. There is no way the 1/3rd fan vote helps GMC at all, meaning he’s getting really strong support from players and coaches – and that tells me everything about him.

  69. Pierce Says:

I wish he was more vocal. We need a vocal leader on that D right now.
