Mike McCarthy & The Bucs

November 12th, 2018

Barring one of the great turnarounds in sports history, Dirk Koetter will be fired after this season, if not sooner, and the Bucs will be among several teams looking for their next Super Bowl coach.

Sorry, Koetter, fans. That’s the clear and cold reality.

So who might be the next Bucs head coach?

Joe has been starting to look deeply at that and will continue to do so in the coming days.

Up next on the Packers’ schedule are two road games — at Seattle and at Minnesota. Losses in those tough games would drop Green Bay’s record to 4-6-1 and effectively end their playoff hopes in November.

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is on a hot seat now, if you pay attention to Green Bay and national hot-seat talk. And back-to-back losses now could push McCarthy out the door.

With a stunning 10-8 record in the playoffs and a 125-74-2 overall record, McCarthy is one heck of a head coaching candidate. What Joe likes about McCarthy is that he’s been forced to develop talent. Until the last couple of years, Green Bay’s front office under Ted Thompson nearly ignored free agency. That was the philosophy.

Team Glazer loves to build through the draft. That’s the goal, anyway. And McCarthy’s seems to have a staff that can do it.

Yeah, he’s had Hall of Fame quarterbacks to work with since 2006, but that doesn’t mean he can’t coch. And he certainly has the heavyweight credentials to compete against the stud coaches in the NFC South.

McCarthy is the architect of the Packers offense and he might be someone who can get Jameis Winston on the path to glory, and be eager to do it. Jameis often has been compared to Aaron Rodgers, as far as his ability to make plays out of the pocket, in addition to the data that backs that up.

Joe will be rooting for the Packers to implode over the next two games. That does not mean McCarthy, 55, is Joe’s leading candidate for the looming opening at One Buc Palace, but the Bucs could do a lot worse and more head coach options out is always a good thing.

NO NO AND HELL NO!!! IF IT WAS NOT FOR #12 THIS GUY WOULD BE OUT OF GREEN BAY A LOOOOOOONG TIME AGO! HARD PASS

  2. Mort Says:

I know some packers fans that would tell you McCarthy has held them back. Buyer beware.

Not to mention he would bring a track record of bad defenses as well.

  3. AtlBucFanDan Says:

Dont you mean Advent Healths Training Facility?

  4. Frank813 Says:

    Bruce Arians
    John Harbaugh
    Mike McCarthy
…… all better than Raheem, Lovie and Dirk…..and Gruden

  5. JJV Says:

They could sign Vince Lombardi amd it would not matter. You have to fix the root of the problem-the ownership. Otherwise you are just spinning the wheels with the same results.

  6. zzbuc Says:

Joe is so focus on throwing Koetter under the bus, that he can even propose bringing Lovie Smith back……….

  7. Zach Says:

I think more job opening that are out there is bad for the bucs. I do not think bucs will be high on the list of most desirable jobs for coaching candidates. If 8 jobs open up we may be getting the 6th best candidate.

  8. Robert Says:

I’ve seen this movie before and it doesn’t end well.

should hae gotten Chucky if we could. Him and Schiano are the only good coaches we have had.

  9. BucEmUp Says:

    Bruce arians

  10. Simsini Says:

Time for John Harbaugh. Although would Greg Schiano coming back be such a bad idea?

  11. Mike Johnson Says:

If he can be lured out of retirement. I think Bruce Arians is our best choice. But I agree with a lot of people…the more vacanicies? The worst it is for us.

  12. Buc4evr Says:

McCarthy is light years ahead of any coach that we have had since Gruden. He is for sure an upgrade of Klueless Koetter. Problem is that the Bucs are Cleveland South, nobody in their right mind wants to come here.

  13. zzbuc Says:

Bruce Arians was pretty clear that the only team he will consider are the Browns……pure and simple………..

  14. Rick Says:

Arians said the only team he’ll unretire for are the brown.

  15. Maddognavy Says:

He has a franchise QB and hasn’t done anything with him. What’s he gonna do with this batch of misfits? No thank you

  16. Alanbucsfan Says:

The next coach should be a younger guy who is closer in age to player’s generation. No more retreads.

  17. Loyaltotheend Says:

    @Robert

Are you paying attention to Oakland?

    Gruden is a joke

  18. JJV Says:

Once again, let’s replace.the coach, the GM, the players. It has been a recipe for success for many years for our franchise. Surely those changes will be the answer.

  19. DB55 Says:

Lol, dude has won 3-4 games with Rodger and Matthews he’ll win zero games with Fitz and McIceCream. Come on get outta here

  20. JJV Says:

Let’s have faith in our owners that they make the correct decisions with a solid plan. We just have to believe it will be different this time.

  21. BuccaneerByBirth Says:

Bad defense and underachieved with Rodgers. Paaaaaasssssssssss

  22. Doctor Stroud Says:

I’m not sure McCarthy would want to come to Tampa, except for the opportunity to raid Glazer loot. There might be a lot of other well known looters…er, I mean, candidates: Todd Haley, Jim Schwartz, Jason Garrett (with the opportunity to bring back Rod Marinelli), Josh McDaniels, and John Harbaugh. The Bucs should go young and bring in an up and coming assistant that will go back to the fundamentals.

  23. go for the face30 Says:

“Jameis often has been compared to Aaron Rodgers.” – The acronym “lol” is often used way too often. Too gratuitious (sp) if you will, but this time I legit could not stop bursting with laughter in my office at work. Thank you so much for the hearty laugh this morning.

  24. LakeLand Says:

Cleveland Head Coach position will be the ‘Best’ job for coaching candidates

And the Bucs Head Coach position will be the worst
Why would they want to coach the Bucs?
This team doesn’t even know, who will be their QB in 2019
This team is short on talent
    This team has poor ownership

  25. Dre Says:

rick He said the browns because there is no head coach in Cleveland … he can’t name teams that have coaches under contract … Cleveland technically has no coach DUH

  26. NPRSageBoy Says:

Comparing America’s Turnover Machine, JayMiss, to Aaron Rodgers is akin to lunacy.
Step away from the crack pipe and seek professional help. One is a sure fire HOF player and the other an immature loser.

  27. tmaxcon Says:

    JOE,

Please explain to me and us why any coach with a CHOICE would even consider the bucs and glazers given the last two decades of pure embarrassing football and more drama than 3 seasons of the Kardashians rolled into one.

High School Coaching Jobs in Miami and Texas are far more prestigious with more commitment to winning than a small market bucs franchise with no leadership from owners nor commitment to winning.

There are a hundred college and high school jobs much more attractive than working for glazers.

  28. Wesley Says:

This would be a BIG mistake.

  29. Pryda Says:

    Don’t like at all!

  30. El_Buc941 Says:

Bruce Arians already said the only way he comes out of retirement is for the browns job. Other than that get bill parcels for GM and Jimmy Johnson….PROVEN WINNERS!!!

  31. stpetebucsfan Says:

Greg Schiano? Really? If he was any good wouldn’t he have a job by now?

The three being mentioned are the standard boiler plate guys whose names will be bandied about.

The Bucs are in such shambles right now I do not think the change will make a difference. And that is from the blog optimist.

I do not think we’ve played anywhere near our talent…yet I don’t blame the coaches…this seems like a TOTAL team disaster to me. Blame the Glazers…Licht…Koetter…Jameis and on an on. Everybody’s fingerprints are all over this rotten smelling mess.

ME13 dropped a TD pass yesterday….Cameron Brate dropped a pass that could have led to a TD…Fitz marches right down the field and throws an int at the goal line…our franchise QB is on the bench for a combo of poor play and behavior off the field…we could go on an on an on.

Bottom line for me….I’m sick of reading WHOSE fault this is. It’s EVERYBODY associated with this team from the scouts to the owners!!! No need to pick out scapegoats when you have not just a total team failure..but a complete franchise failure.

Now here’s a real question for us all. What part do the fans have in this equation? We are at minimum co-dependent…we put up with this stuff forever. What if the fans just staged a walkout and went like the guy in the movie “Network”…”I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore”. Then everybody boycotts everything Bucs and tells the Glazers…you are on notice!!!! You are not going to get away with sticking this exceptionally bad product on our field and expect us to support it. They have counted on our NFL addiction to forgive them all their transgressions. What if we kicked the habit for just half a season?

  32. LakeLand Says:

Wade Phillips declined an interview for the Bucs HC position

He took a DC position instead

The Bucs HC position is not a ‘Hot’ job

  33. Nick2 Says:

    Bruce Arians
    Mike McCarthy
    John Harbaugh

And the winner is……..Adam Henry, Cleveland Browns Wide Receivers coach!!!
A complete surprise but hey just like Raheem this guy comes on the cheap and like all of the previous Bucs Head Coaches has no clue how to be a head coach in the NFL AND comes from a losing program very simiilar to the Bucs.

Ok thats not who I want but I am trying to think like the Glazers……..

  34. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Team Glazer loves to build through the draft. That’s the goal, anyway.” I’m impressed Joe … I’ll bet you wrote that with a straight face. OK, maybe a slight smirk.

Actually the funniest part of that whole statement was TEAM Glazer … The Boyz are anything but a TEAM. They’re a COMMITTEE OF OWNERSHIP … and it’s THEIR decisions that keep us in the NFC South basement. THEY are the ones who hire the GMs & coaches, and those are the two elements that’ve totally screwed this franchise since Tony Dungy (hired … and fired … by Daddy Malcolm) was shown the door.

The ONLY reason Gruden won a Super Bowl here was because of the defense that Tony & Monte built (and that Monte continued to run until Gruden himself was fired). Even during our 2002 Super Bowl year, Gruden’s offense ranked #18 in POINTS SCORED and #24 in TOTAL YARDAGE. In 9 out of 16 regular season games in 2002, Gruden’s offense scored 21 or fewer points (and we lost 4 of those … our ONLY 4 losses that year). Not impressive, especially when you look at Monte’s defense being one of the greatest of all time … ranked #1 in 2002 in POINTS ALLOWED and #1 in TOTAL YARDAGE ALLOWED. THAT’S IMPRESSIVE. And that was the defense that Rich MacKay & Tony Dungy built … Gruden’s lap dog Bruce Almighty had nothing to do with it. Our slide started during that period, and continued after that with Mark Dominik & Jason Licht. Bad management decisions … one right after another.

  35. Joe Says:

Please explain to me and us why any coach with a CHOICE would even consider the bucs and glazers given the last two decades of pure embarrassing football and more drama than 3 seasons of the Kardashians rolled into one.

    Zeros on a paycheck.

    Awesome climate.

No state taxes on your seven-figure salary annually.

    Ego.

    Need some more?

  36. doolnutts Says:

Please god no… He can’t win with Aaron Rodgers how the heck would he win with Winston/Fitz/ future rookie etc. This guy is AWFUL. To anyone saying he is an upgrade?? His offense can’t even hold Koetter’s schemes jock.

  37. 813bucboi Says:

hard pass on bruce and mike……

    Kris Richard 4 HC!!!!!

gotta bring in someone young and innovative to stop the offenses of the saints, panthers, ATL, and the rams and someone who can develop defensive talent…..

green bay just overhauled their secondary again…..ARZ is ready to trade robert nkemdechi and hassam reddick, 2 former 1st rounders among others on their defense…..and it aint because they dont fit their scheme…its because they(bruce and his staff) couldnt develop talent…..

bring in someone who has a record of developing mid and low round picks like richard sherman-5th rounder….kam chancellor-5th rounder….brandon browner-UDFA- byron maxwell-6th rounder, and someone who has help create a winning culture, knows what a winning team looks like and knows what it takes to win…..

no more repeat reject coaches…..we need new young blood in the building…..

    KRIS RICHARD 4 HC!!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  38. RealBucFan Says:

Am I the only one here that understands McCarthy is the one who was Roger’s mentor. Also he had to make the call to get rid of Favre and start Roger’s. Roger’s owes McCarthy his career.

  39. Bculaw Says:

Zeros on the paycheck is right, Joe. I’d offer up a Gruden-type deal to lure Harbaugh away from Michigan. He loves him some jameis and has worked wonders with lesser talent at QB. He also preaches a tough as nails mentality that this team hasn’t had since Sapp was let go.

Spend good money on a good coach, or spend dead money on the bad one that you fired.

  40. Dirks Great Granpappy Says:

Ugh joe why did you let reality change back to tmax?

  41. Ben the Ga Buc Says:

He’s better than any coach we’ve had since Gruden. He definitely helped develop Rodgers and had a solid team in GB for a long time.

If he’s available … do it.

  42. doolnutts Says:

Bculaw — I am a Michigan fan.. I know odd combo. I used to have a house in Ann Arbor. There is close to zero chance Harbough leaves Michigan unless fired. He already has Gruden type money, Keys to the city and he is a “Michigan Man”. I know that is balked at but it means something to a guy like him.

That and there is a HUGE buy out in Harbough’s contract. It isn’t impossible but I don’t think any NFL team is coming near him for a long time.

  43. Robert Says:

    Harbaugh, hell yeah!!!

if he can make kolin kickacop look good he might be able to make jameis the crabman serviceable.

hell, crabman and kickacop could be best bros. maybe have both and we could have planned parenthood sponsor the stadium

    GHHHYEEAAAHHHH!!!

  44. Troy Says:

Funny how a coach who’s 125-74-2 is someone people want to take a pass on. This is why this franchise sucks. People don’t want to win. That record is the definition of a WINNER. And please stop with the crap about Rodgers making his record this great. He’s definitely one piece, but it takes more than one player folks. Ask Marino about that if you think you can win alone. I’m not saying he should be the guy, but if he’s available and we don’t even interview him, the franchise would be foolish.

  45. Zwak Says:

This franchise needs a football mind to oversee football operations! Bruce Arians would be a nice choice then let him choose everything else. I just hope if they clean house they go deep into it! The scouting Dept should be completely gutted!

  46. Lord Cornelius Says:

All I know is every Packers fan I know absolutely hates this guy and has for many years. He seems like an over-the-hill past his prime type. Perfect for the Bucs to waste years on.

Would much rather try 813’s route.

  47. tmaxcon Says:

    Zeros on a paycheck.

    Awesome climate.

No state taxes on your seven-figure salary annually.

all that can be achieved with a franchise that actually will attempt to win. If a coach has options bucs will not even be considered. they have been dumped or left at the altar more times. glazers clearly are not going to ever field a respectable product…. they will be predictable and give dungy the clown some BS title to appease the has-beens and bucs will celebrate once again celebrate mediocre 500 football as glory years

  48. DB55 Says:

How about Derrick brooks? He might be the only person interested in embarrassing himself for the sake of the fans.

  49. TampaLacrosse24 Says:

A former head coach who was run out of somewhere else doesn’t excite me in the least. Why not a guy who has the fire, passion and connection to Tampa; give Rich Bisaccia the chance he deserves. Players seem to show up for him.

  50. GhostofSchiano Says:

    Dan Campbell or James Bettcher.

  51. SteelStudBuc Says:

    I’ll compare Rodgers to Winston.
Rodgers is great… Winston… very bad.

  52. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Zach Smith from Ohio St is looking for a job, look at his twitter, he would be perfect for Jameis and GMC….Saban is first choice but if somehow can swing Zach Smith that guy would bring something to Tampa and definitely hekp the economy of massage parlors in tampa and teach jameis the proper technique of catching an uber driver, perfect fit here

  53. Etzel Says:

Nooooooo. Is this some loser culture thing? We all want has-been coaches who had success 5-10 years ago. These guys have been mediocre the past half a decade and I do not see them turning this team around. We need someone young/new.

  54. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Neither her nor Arians will be the next coach.

IF the Glazers fire Koetter, then Todd Monken will be made the head coach for continuity with Jameis.

But I don’t believe Koetter will be fired.

  55. LakeLand Says:

    Lol Dusthty

    That was some funny stuff

  56. Cobraboy Says:

Jack del Rio and keep Monken as OC.

  57. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Wow. tmaxcon has been allowed to play himself! Here we go again.

  58. AtlBuc Says:

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  60. Not there yet Says:

Lol that’s funny joe hall of fame quarterbacks make all the difference in wins and losses. I prefer not to fire a coach on the hot just to hire another coach who was on the hot seat. The colts have a first time head coach and headed in the right direction. We don’t need to go this route. I’d prefer rich basacchia before this guy to be honest. Just want a coach with balls to make the tough decisions for this roster

  61. 813bucboi Says:

    bonzai

they cleaning house….if you dont know that by now, your helpless…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  62. Ok cool Says:

    1) The team has talent (especially offensive). If you can’t see that I’m not sure if this is the sport for you.

    2) I agree McCarthy has clout but it’s been amid disappointment. having Rodgers at qb and only a few good seasons in green Bay over the last 12 years. Not awe inspiring.

    3) John harbaugh has close to zero talent and they are still competitive. He is a phenomenal HC. Seems to focus on fundamentals and keeping the franchise accountable.

    4) this isn’t a full rebuild considering our talent; but we do need a new QB. The draft should be interesting

    5) enough with the tacky ass names like ‘crabman’ and ‘kickacop’. Beyond Corny.

    6) move the bucs out of Tampa (hello San Diego?…. Hello San Antonio?!)

  63. LakeLand Says:

    AtlBuc

This team has Lakeland Lumberjacks talent

  64. LakeLand Says:

    AtlBuc

This team also has a ‘ Mickey Mouse’ coaching staff
    Donald Duck as GM

  65. LakeLand Says:

I have never seen a ‘Talented’ team

    With a -19 Turnover ratio

  66. LakeLand Says:

    Paper talent

    That what it is

It damn show ain’t talent on the field

  67. tmaxcon Says:

    Bonzi,

How’d all the delusional optimism and asinine assumptions you made all off season turn out….. Once again, It turns out that I am always right and that must hurt….. franchise will not even sniff a post season game until glazers are replaced. they don’t care and they don’t have to with this ignorant fan base.

  68. Dapostman Says:

    Jim Harbaugh.

    Winner at Stanford
    Winner at San Francisco
    Winner at Michigan

Built a Stanford program with academic restrictions.
Built the 49’ers into an NFC power with a SB appearance
Built Michigan after the Brady Hoke era where now they are #4

Jim Harbaugh is the only real choice where he has taken over a bad program and turned them into winners. Not once but 3 times. Proven.

    Spend the money Glazers.

  69. tnew Says:

Tampa needs a disciplined, younger guy, hungry to get his chance and make his mark.. Kris Richard might be that guy. Bucs must gamble to find their next coach and hope it works out. But don’t pair him with an inexperienced GM.

Bringing in a guy who is finishing out his career is not what this team needs. Commit to a rebuild in 2019.

  70. LakeLand Says:

-19 Turnover ratio after only 9 games

The only talent they have shown me is turning the ball over
And not enough talent to create turnovers

I don’t believe in ‘Paper’ talent
Your performance speaks louder than words

  71. Dre Says:

This fanbase is as bad as the team smh

  72. LakeLand Says:

After 11 years without a playoff appearance

    There shouldn’t be a fanbase

  73. Defense Rules Says:

Folks need to stop with the ‘Hire this coach, hire that coach’ routine. Bill Belicheck couldn’t win with this team. The coaching choice IS obviously critical, but NOT until the Bucs get some adult leadership ABOVE that. Glazer Boyz have shown that they collectively make BAD DECISIONS, and that’s precisely why they need to hire a highly-experienced President of Football Operations to create a vision for this franchise and select the best leadership (GM & coaching staff) to bring that vision to reality.

There are some brilliant football minds out there who’d LOVE a challenge like that (without having to actually coach the sucker). The key would be that the Glazers essentially stay ‘hands off’. I seriously doubt that Tony Dungy would take a job like that with the Glazers, but he’d be the first one I’d ask.

  74. LakeLand Says:

    Defense Rules

These fans are going on like the Bucs HC opening
Will be a ‘once in a lifetime’ job
    A ‘Dream’ job

In reality, it’s a nightmare of a job
No ‘Sane’ person will accept it

  75. Howard Cosell Says:

Glaze-tards have proven over and over and over and over and over that NO ONW worth a spit will work for them because they know it’s a dysfunctional organization

  76. Howard Cosell Says:

    *ONE

  77. Howard Cosell Says:

Glaze-tards must be incredibly proud…….of the money they’ve extracted from the NFL without having to provide anything of substance in return

  78. Ed Says:

    Jim Harbaugh: GM
    John Harbaugh: Head Coach

  79. Howard Cosell Says:

Anyone criticizing the fanbase must work for the Glaze-tards or the media.
Absolutely beyond ridiculous to blame the freakin fanbase and not the owners

  80. Howard Cosell Says:

Cmon cowards….tell me why the freakin fanbase is responsible for the state of this Scheme Glazer cluster ***k

  81. Cobraboy Says:

    You guys are funny.

What kind is a guy marries a fat, ugly chick?

    Not winners, for sure.

And can anyone argue the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not the fat, ugly chicks of the NFL?

  82. Howard Cosell Says:

BUcs are the fat ugly chick with HPV

  83. unbelievable Says:

Another head coach that almost always has bad defenses? No thanks.

And unless Jameis suddenly develops a super quick release like Rodgers, McCarthy would never have the same kind of success with him.

Rogers is one of the best to ever play the game. Not as many rings as Brady, but you could argue he’s the better QB.

  84. Brandon Short Says:

People can’t read between the lines. Arians said only [open] HC job he would consider is in Cleveland. As of right now, it is the ONLY open job right now. No decent HC has ever campaigned for a job that wasn’t open.

Arians is at the top of the list, the Harbaugh brothers, McCarthy, and that might be it… though the Oklahoma HC is getting lots of interest lately.

  85. Aceofaerospace Says:

Sooooo essentially we’re rooting for the Bucs to lose now I guess. Welcome to November Bucs fans.

  86. stpetebucsfan Says:

Read Doolnutts post and then can we stop with the Jim Harbaugh stuff?

Obviously Harbaugh would be a HUGE upgrade over ANY HC including Chucky that we’ve ever had.

Doolnutts is a Michigan man and he’s got it right.

Harbaugh played QB for Michigan…Harbaugh is a “Michigan Man”.

Money is irrelevant other than for ego. We are talking FABULOUSLY wealthy people here….worth 30-40-50 million or more. There is NO check that would bring Harbaugh to Tampa…at least Jim…John perhaps.

Harbaugh has finally gotten his program where he wants it…in the top 4 competing for a National Title. That is his goal…not returning to a SB with the Bucs. This is PERSONAL for Harbaugh…his professional cred is already well established as pointed out by earlier posters.

Money is not the deal…he’s making 9 million a year in a job he has a lot of control…do we think Jim Harbaugh will be able to continually recruit the top players in the nation…like…Saban…Urban or Jimbo…of course we do.

Harbaugh is in the cat bird seat..why would he leave Michigan?

And think of this…Harbaugh is soooo far ahead of any coach we’ve ever had in here what makes us believe all of the sudden we’re going to get one of the best in the biz?

  87. The_Rockstar Says:

Please… no retreads. Pick a defensive minded coach to go with the best offense in the NFL. (501 yards and 3 points… go figure).
Todd Wash or Vic Fangio maybe.

  88. Fire Goodell Says:

IF the Glazers fire Koetter, then Todd Monken will be made the head coach for continuity with Jameis.

It’s why the Glazers fired Lovie and replaced him with Koetter because they thought he would get a head coaching job elsewhere. He interviewed with the 49ers. Likewise, Gruden got fired after the Broncos interviewed Raheem.

  89. PSLBob Says:

Need to bring in a young and aspiring offensive or defensive coordinator, not a recycled former coach, regardless of record. If you don’t stay current in terms of offensive and defensive schemes in this league, you’re toast. For proof of that, just look at the Bucs.

  90. Rod Munch Says:

This guy would literally be worse than Dirk. No no no.

  91. Jason Says:

Oh, please. I trust the Bucs could do better than McCarthy, unless he brings AR with him.

  92. wisconsinbucsfan Says:

    Good grief NO!

  93. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    Cobraboy Says:
“Jack del Rio and keep Monken as OC.”

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Not a bad thought, Cobraboy. I think my first choice would be someone younger…. new/fresh blood…….. but if it were a veteran coach, I do really like Jack Del Rio and think he could be a good option.
