“I Just Think That Is Some Selfish-type Sh!t”

November 11th, 2018

Feels bad for DJax.

The way the Bucs played last week, it sure gave former Bucs guard Ian Beckles plenty of firewood for his podcast, “In the Trenches.”

Beckles is outraged by a lot of things. Among them is the two sides he sees of Bucs star wide receiver DeSean Jackson. Beckles did not like how Jackson asked for a trade. But Beckles confessed he doesn’t blame him.

“Man, there would be some offensive coordinators that would be salivating to have the talent we have out there,” Beckles said. “I don’t think we use DeSean Jackson right. I blame him for wanting a trade because I don’t think that is something teammates do. I just think that is some selfish type sh!t. But we don’t use him right.”

Beckles said he always see Jackson two steps behind his defender on deep routes. Beckles believes Jackson should be targeted at least a half-dozen times a game on deep routes until defenses show they can hang with him.

Another wide receiver Beckles believes is getting the short end of the stick is Adam Humphries.

“If Adam Humphries played for the Patriots you know how many catches he would have? 110,” Beckles exclaimed. Beckles added Humphries runs “beautiful” routes.

“We are wasting him,” Beckles said. “There is no reason why he shouldn’t have 70 catches a year.”

(For the record, Humphries is on pace for 70 catches this year and caught 61 last year.)

Some other thoughts Beckles had about the Bucs losing to the Stinking Panthers:

* “That team I saw doesn’t win three more games this year. There are certain things we are doing defensively you cannot compensate for. It is impossible. … The Buccaneers cannot stop anybody on defense. The defense cannot make a stop any time it matters. … Our tackling is embarrassing. I am embarrassed. … We cannot tackle. It is horrendous.

* Compared the defense to the “Island of Misfit Toys” of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” fame.

* Requested for any listeners with video evidence of Vita Vea or Beau Allen making a play last week, to send him a copy.

* “The stupidity out there — the elementary mistakes I am still seeing. … We are not a smart football team in general. … Undisciplined.”

* “I hope people at One Buc Place are throwing up in their mouths watching that film.”

* On Caleb Benenoch, Beckles said, “I’m 51 and I’m better than him.”

* Beckles also added if the Bucs re-sign soon-to-be free agent, left tackle Donovan Smith, he will quit following the Bucs.

As always, Beckles welcomes feedback and invites readers to forward Bucs questions by e-mailing him at IanBeckles@RadioInfluence.com.

So much for changing the culture this year is a disaster in so many ways, no qb,RB, OL has 2 solid players, a 29 year old DE, and nothing else on Defense, everyone in the secondary is suspect so far which is worrisome since most of them were top picks, no kicker, horrible coaching, but we have top offense that gives away the ball likes they are playing hot potato, just embarrassing

  2. Dewey Selmon Says:

Then quit following the Bucs Ian. Anyone who says if “this or that” happens then I will never follow this team again should immediately have their fan card revoked.

  3. Pete I Says:

Beckles was better than Beneoch and likely still is. Not a fan of Beckles radio gigs but he isn’t wrong.

  4. OneBuc55 Says:

Don’t get me wrong I like the Desean Jackson and I wish we could find a way to get him more involved into the game but there are some limitations with this guy…

Every ball you throw to him must be perfect, if it’s a 50-50 ball forget about it, if he has to extend, torque his body or jump off the ground to catch the pass nine times out of 10 you can forget about it…

  5. BringBucsBack Says:

Dewey, you make a good point. However, we are all sick, tired and embarrassed of the complete ineptitude. We are not a team having a down-year or two but, an organization having it’s 3rd-&-a-half down-decade, out of 40 years! I don’t blame anyone for leaving; I wish I could.

As I see it, the only issue remotely close to a debate brought up here is D. Smith. He is durable but, underwhelming. What is that worth?

  6. Gofortheface30 Says:

Oh Dewey stop being a Vag. Clearly Ian would like nothing more than for the Bucs to do well. He is paid provide commentary on what he sees. And what he sees, is steaming pile of crap. And this team has been a complete embarrassment for years. He is 110 percent correct about everything. Maybe you’re the one whose fan card should be revoked since you’re content with cheering on mediocrity

  7. Dewey Selmon Says:

Vagface, you cheer for whoever is put on the field. You must think one call to the HQ will fix everything. you have no control over the situation, but to threaten to stop following the Bucs? lol. you must of arrived during the SB era. You haven’t been through the worst of this franchise.

  8. OneBuc55 Says:

As for our defense there’s three words that none of these guys know the meaning of…Discipline Pride Swagger… when it came to Tampa Bay defenses of the past these words used to mean something around these parts…

Personally I teach my boys the same way I was taught…To be a good defensive player #1 you must play smart, #2 you must play fast, and last but not least #3 you must play relentless…So basically you want your defense to look like a pack of hungry hyenas every time the ball gets snapped…What I’m seeing right now is 11 matadors and as life long Bucs fan it really breaks my heart…

  9. Knoxville Buc Fan Says:

Damn I hope the Bucs resign Donovan. Ian stops following the Bucs then that means the Joes stop following Ian. Sign him sign him

  10. Easy Says:

Liedtke has to be better than Benenoch

  11. Razor Ramone Says:

    That’s true.

  12. LakeLand Says:

I have been saying this for years
The Bucs are not using their players right
They are not putting them in a position to succeed

Adam Humphries should be a ” Go to WR”
Hump has 1,025 YAC in 3 1/2 seasons
This despite only starting 11 games
Jameis Winston has more success throwing to Hump and the TE
But the offense is built around him going mostly to the WR
    Which he has less success

  13. Vortexx66 Says:

This truly is a sad day, for me. After over 20 years of watching the bucs play, this will be the first game im not watching. I just cant watch anymore. Maybe someday i will return. Maybe…

  14. Wesley Says:

Don’t ever feel bad for someone making millions playing a game.

  15. LakeLand Says:

You also have to look at Hump Catch Ratio

    2015. 67.5 %
    2016. 66.3 %
    2017. 73.5 %
    2018. 70.0 %

You add that to his 1,025 YAC
You have a solid slot WR

I expect teams will be bidding for his services in 2019

  16. BucEmUp Says:

I normally can’t stand Ian but he right about everything here. This team is a complete dumpster fire. It’s almost as if the glaziers are being paid by the NFL to come out every year and waste talent….like the league needs a few teams every year to just be the punchline of every NFL joke and they just volunteered.

Only thing I don’t agree with is djax..Maybe if he was.ok with getting his jersey dirty and laid out for a catch rather than worrying about getting dirt on his pretty little face.

    Overpaid cry baby

  17. Wright Says:

Bucs will bring back Hump, at Djax’s expense. I’m okay with our WR core next year being Evans, Godwin, Hump, and Watson. That’s a solid 4 right there. Combine that with another year of OJ and Brate our offense will be solid next year whoever is the QB. Hopefully Winston gets another shot under a different scheme.

Defense is a whole another story, keep a few pieces but blow it up!

  18. BucFamous Says:

Ever notice how this is the only site that sports on Beckles? There’s a reason for that–no one cares.

  19. LakeLand Says:

    Wright

Adam Humphries is a UFA in 2019

He may decide to leave the Bucs

The Bucs don’t have a say in where he plays next season
He will be an Unrestricted Free Agent

  20. Jonathan Lipnicki Says:

Heckles is probably better than Benenoch knock joke…but so was Sweezy on IR.

  21. Wright Says:

Lakeland, I know that. I guess I should clarify, Hump will be worth the extra he’ll ask for next season. I believe Bucs will try to keep him, especially if it’s at the expense of Jackson.

  22. adam from ny Says:

i used to fux wit ron diaz, ian beckles and frog pond by clearwater beach…and the yung — a very yung commish

  23. LakeLand Says:

    Wright

They should have locked him up this season
Instead of giving him a one year deal
They should have gave Cam Brate the one year deal

  24. Pickgrin Says:

Nobody cares what Ian Beckles thinks.

Joe is literally the only local Bucs outlet that pays any attention to Beckles or quotes his “opinions”. Why? I have no idea – but Joe sure seems smitten with Ian’s mostly terrible takes considering the weekly articles on JBF quoting this quasi shock-jock fool who talks like he was some great player in his day – which he wasn’t – at all.

Donovan Smith is not a great OLineman and is struggling to even stay in the “pretty good” category – but Smith is absolutely a better player than Beckles ever was…

  25. Schlomiebarmitzvahcircumscissorstein Says:

Ohhhhhhhh… whatever you do, don’t take my “fan card!!”…..Lol, careful, your civic pride brainwash is showing.
