Empty Offense

November 20th, 2018

Misleading stats.

The numbers look great for the spreadsheeters. Except for one important number.

The Bucs’ record-setting offense is really rolling up numbers that are both impressive and hard to believe knowing how for generations this franchise’s offense stunk out loud.

That’s not the case any longer, as Nate Davis of USA Today points out.

The Buccaneers’ top-ranked offense has surpassed 500 yards in five games. Tampa Bay is 1-4 in those contests, losing four in a row after falling to the Giants on Sunday (despite amassing 510 yards).

Time is rapidly running out for Bucs Bit-O-Honey-snacking, Ozark-watching coach Dirk Koetter to figure out.

And it sure smells like that will be Goal No. 1 for the next coach: How to take this same talent-rich offense and turn those yards into points.

The irony is the guy that can save Dirk’s skin is the one he has repeatedly thrown under he bus this year.

  2. BigOne Says:

Not points … wins . I think most of those 5 games we scored way enough points. Just a little too little late..

  3. Rojas Says:

O.J Howard is done for the year.

  4. Mike Johnson Says:

I can’t wait to turn the page next year with new hope and coaches. Right now,
I think we will even have a tough time against the lowly 49ers!

  5. JIMMY T Says:

OTHER than first 1st two games FITZ has been horrible! After two awesome games winning and throwing 8 TDS & 1 pick that wasn’t really a pick it was a OJ drop. Then FITZ played Horrible in first half against STEELERS. They made it close but it was garbage TDS. Horrible first half against Bears. Was down 35-7 to PANTHERS and his picks cost POINTS! This offense is a sham! Any NEW COACH, hopefully Bruce Arians or Jim Harbaugh will establish the run as well. To me ever since the BROWNS WIN KOETTER & Jameis relationship fractured! I mean KOETTER looked MISERABLE WHEN JAMEIS brought them back last week! It’s obvious DIRK has given up. I want DIRK to pull a Jim Fossel and say ” we will win the rest of OUR GAMES

  6. ben Says:

Eric..Winston thru the team under the bus with not being honest about the uber incident .

  7. Tony LA Says:

It is so stupid how everyone is focused on the offense.

  8. 813bucboi Says:

easy…..draft a bellcow like benny snell and feed him and barber…..that will minimize winston’s TO’s and create mental and physical toughness……

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!

  9. Buc4evr Says:

Koetter has no answers, none. Now he is going back to Winston, but again no plan to do anything different. Yards don’t matter points do. Defense is the same mess, can’t get to the QB and can’t stop the run. The whole team is fubar and Dirk is totally lost. He needs to be fired today… no more of this garbage.

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

OJ Howard placed on Injured Reserve. Guess keeping Brate is a great idea after all!

  11. AfrikaThaRapper Says:

On a side note, not trying to kick JW out of the door, but has anyone seen Will Grier from West Virginia? Wouldn’t be a bad backup plan.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    The word is CHOKE!!!

  13. Cobraboy Says:

With the exception of the Washington game, the issue is not points.

    It stopping opponents.

The offense is NOT the problem on this team, nor is either QB.

  14. LakeLand Says:

    Garbage yards

  15. Cobraboy Says:

@AfrikaThaRapper: Will Grier is what the }prototype NFL QB” is morphing to become.

I’d rather take a shot building the O with a guy like that and spending the $$$ from Winston’s $21 million on defense.

  16. LakeLand Says:

    Pittsburgh 24-7
    Chicago 38-3
    Atlanta 21-6
    Cincinnati 21-0
    Carolina 35-7
    Washington 16-3
    NY Giants 24-7

Why they don’t get 500 yards, before they trail by 3-4 scores
A ton of ” Garbage” yards
Only meaningless stats to impress the delusional fanbase

  17. LakeLand Says:

0-7 in the games I posted

    Again, GARBAGE yards
    Garbage stats

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

BTW, people…the Bucs are 8th in points scored. You really should check your stats before saying we suck at points scored.

  19. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Firing Mike Smith felt so good 😊

  20. LakeLand Says:

    Buccaneer Bonzai

How many of those points came when trailing by 2-3 scores?

  21. Kobe Faker Says:

“This is why the Bucs brought back Klueless to develop Jameis? What did Gump say? Stability and continuity?

Playing merry go round with the young QB? Is this why he couldnt build the career of the 10th pick QB Blaine Gabbert in Jacksonville?

    constant swithching play callers

    benching QB every other week

making the selfish malcontent the captain

cant figure out whats going to happen weekly

is this good coaching? Qb whisperer?

does other franchise teams coach like this?

January 6 2016, the Glazers and the Tampa football fans have been conned and lied to from Dumb and Dumber”

“Both Jason Gump and Klueless Koetter should be fired immediately and sent back to hollywood california to their original position as body doubles of Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels”

    Kobe Faker

  22. DaPostman Says:

    Koet ter?

    No

    Koet him. Now!

  23. Mike Johnson Says:

The only calling card this franchise had was DEFENSE. It won us a superbowl. Yet..many Buc fans still give Ojjs and Awhss about this so called great Offense.
The Offense is there..Yes some tweeking needs to be done. But you’d better hope to God we can get a coach in here to turn around this god awful suck A.. Defense!! Shootouts are won by teams who can muster some defense at the end. KC got a taste of that on Monday night football.

  24. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

All I want for Christmas is a new head coach

  25. Rod Munch Says:

I’m no fan of Dirk but how many points did the defense give up in those games? It’s a ridiculous conversation to talk about the offense not doing their job when they put up 35 and lose.

Now 500+ yards and 3 points, yeah, that’s ridiculous. But 500+ yards and 29+ points should get you victory, you know, unless your defense gives up 40 points per game on the road.

  26. Kobe Faker Says:

“Is Klueless a Head coach or Offensive Coordinator?

On december 31, 2018, This idiot will be out of the NFL forever”

  27. Anonymous Says:

Dirk Koetter is stubborn with players and play calls time after time and that’s why he can’t produce W’s.

    1. Mike Smith
    2. Doug Martin
    3. Never shakes up any plays (especially in the red zone) from his basic a$$ playbook.
    4. And recently, making my eyes boil that he’s starting Isaiah Johnson over Whitehead every week. That guy is pure garbage.

  28. Defense Rules Says:

Rams 54 – Chiefs 51. Wonder if the Chiefs fans said ‘Man, we can’t believe our defense is THIS bad; gave up FIFTY FOUR points and over 500 yards in a single game. We really suck.’ My guess is NO they didn’t.

  29. SOEbuc Says:

Koetter is stubborn and makes wrong decisions about player’s, coach’s, and play’s and that makes him a bad HC. He’s not a risk taker by any means.

    1. Mike Smith
    2. Doug Martin
    3. Doesn’t shake up anything (especially in the red zone) from his basic a$$ playbook.
    4. Lately, blood boils every week when I see him starting Isaiah Johnson over Whitehead every week. That guy is garbage! At least we know Whitehead can lay a hit.

  30. JimmyJack Says:

The Bucs can’t score when they need to. If we get behind in a game you need your offense to answer back. If they don’t answer back and go down by 2 TDs you need them to score before the game gets out of hand.

The Bucs are not scoring when we need them to. It’s part of the reason we are done at the half…….See Lakeland’s halftime scores above.

  31. JimmyJack Says:

Scoring 7 and less points during a half of football is not what good offenses do.

Sure it happens. It’s doesn’t happen 70% of the time.

This problem existed last year too. This year it’s slightly masked by futile comeback trys. But if you watch the games you see we don’t score when we need to. That’s not good offense. Not when it’s 7of 10 games.

  32. SOEbuc Says:

Glazers need to open the vault to a vet top-tier NFL coach that is known for putting together good coaching staffs. Can’t take any risks on college coaches and coordinators anymore, no matter how good they are at those positions. Or I would also have no problem with trying to bring Raheem Morris back. Wouldn’t be huge bank and is very experienced at coaching both sides of the ball and has coached on good football teams. People need to stop saying Jim or John Harbaugh cus it’s getting annoying.

  33. SOEbuc Says:

    JimmyJack

First half problems is straight up bad play calling. Koetter won’t take any chances out of his slow, basic playbook in the first half but when we gott get points in the second, he starts speeding up the tempo and we lose by 3. It’s soft coaching. Him and GMC can go get a double scoop together when they take the long walk next year.

  34. LakeLand Says:

I’m going on my job and sit in the break room and drink coffee for 3 hours. Then I will go to work and try to catch up on my work, with the 5 hours I have left. It’s impossible to do 8 hours of work in 5 hours.

    I will probably get fired
But the Bucs do it every week, they still have jobs

  35. JimmyJack Says:

SOE our offense has also benefitted from facing a lot of prevent looks in the second halfs.

You can see the trend with this team. If the score is close at halftime, like Washington, we are less successful in the 2nd because they are probably still playing in their base set.

If the sore at halftime is out of hand we are more capable because we are looks ng at a lot of shell defenses.

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

It is all about the defense, and that being the case, Koetter is not the issue.

Replace the entire defensive staff with competent coaches and coordinator, then this team will go to the superbowl.

  37. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    SOEbuc Says
“First half problems is straight up bad play calling. Koetter won’t…”

Except the Koetter has only called playing in one game since the season started. The bad play calling you point to is Monken, not Koetter.

But for the most part, I do not believe there has actual been many bad play calls.

And for the record…the who ‘playcalling’ claim thing? Not one fan knows the plays which are called on any given play, so not one fan can accurately make the claim.

  38. GMen Says:

It’s kind of difficult to believe that Koetter will be gone but America’s Most Wanted will still be here.

  39. Seth Says:

No joke…can Vea switch to RG?

If dude can’t rush the passer… he’s built like a perfect RG and completely sticks to everything he touches with amazing strength.

  40. Anonymous Says:

    @GMen

Cutting stuff coming from a Giants fan, lol

  41. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^^ You actually make a very interesting point, @Seth, about Vea and RG.

They probably would not be able to justify such a thing with a 1st Rounder. We have seen many successful switches of this sort, but usually for a late round type of player.

Still, it is definitely an intriguing point.

  42. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    @Seth

Our luck, he will go to the Patriots and be a 10 year Pro Bowler at RG… lol
