If you’d like to watch extreme loafing, Buccaneers-style, dial up your copy of yesterday’s game and go to the final play of the first quarter.
The only adjective Joe can think of is “disgusting.”
Once upon a time, Derrick Brooks and friends fought for every blade of grass. It seems like two lifetimes ago.
On that final play of the first quarter, Peyton Barber is on a designed run left and is hit after a two-yard gain. Most of his teammates stopped blocking as Barber was wrapped up by a defensive lineman. While Barber battles to shake loose, Donovan Smith, Caleb Benenoch and Demar Dotson completely give up on the play. And when Barber does get free, he runs right past them and they show sign of a football response.
Benenoch even turns away from the play and starts walking backwards, while Barber is running just a few yards away from him.
Keep in mind no whistle has blown.
It’s not the first time Joe has written about members of the Bucs offensive line refusing to play to the whistle — Football 101 — and there is no apparent accountability from Dirk Koetter.
How bout a new rule at One Buc Palace? You loaf, you sit for the first series of the next game. It was the first quarter, nobody on the Bucs should have been tired or demoralized. Joe thought Barber was well-liked by his linemen?
This is a sad, sad team.
And Joe’s going to give Dirk Koetter a coaching loaf, too, though their really is no such thing.
The Bucs called a timeout with 8 seconds remaining in the first half, just after a first down to the Redskins’ 47 yard line.
Do the Bucs try to use their elite weapons for a deep heave downfield to the end zone? Maybe draw a penalty in the process? Nope.
Do the Bucs try a very quick out to give their wacky kicker a shot to make his second 59-yard field goal of the season? Or a deeper out to get closer? Nope.
The TV replay shows no receiver is running deep and the quick outs, all under 10 yards, are covered. Ryan Fitzpatrick doesn’t fire the ball out of bounds for another play. He hits Jacquizz Rodgers on the worthless checkdown. And halftime arrives.
Joe would love to know what was discussed during that timeout.
That’s just another sign of a poorly coached team right there.

Why has Koetter not been fired yet??? Better still how is it Joe has not announced that Chandler “Wide Right” Catanzaro is not cut? How the PHUCK is that even possible??

Lmao me too. Watching the Pats in the same situation they tried a quick out. It wasn’t there and he threw it out of bounds. That should have been the play. Then hail mary on the final seconds if we couldn’t hit a pass for a FG attempt.

I went to Atlanta and Sat right behind the bench in Row A. Benenoch has both arms draped over the bench everytime he sat down like he was in a park! I reported this on WDAE and in this site and I was told I was looking for things to pick at. My response now…. What do you have to say now BEETCHES!!!

How about sitting your line after mental errors and critical penalties, let them sit until the guy taking their place makes an error. There’s no way they can be considering pay this guy top tackle money. Hopefully all roster decisions such as contract extensions have been overruled and halted by the glazers

Fringe players who can be replaced in a heartbeat should not be benched for a series. They should be cut. Koetter is too soft and not demanding enough as a leader. What you permit you condone. He should demand that players do things the RIGHT way every time and practice it until it is done RIGHT. Playing until you hear the whistle is the RIGHT way. No way will Koetter survive and he actually should be gone by now. Test the feelers on Jim Harbaugh and spend the money Glazers if needed. Get a proven do it RIGHT guy.

Jaquizz Rogers has always played well on the check down and he played very well yesterday (for the team only scoring 3 points). Ronald Jones (although injured) was known to getting to the outside and breaking loose. There is no check down to the outside in Koetter’s playbook! He’ll run the WR screen to Hump all the time but never a RB. We have one of the best, deepest receiving corps in the league that will keep defenses’ playing back. KOETTER’S BAD COACHING STARTS WITH HIS BAD PLAYBOOK.

Even though he’s played OG all his life, Leidtke was boss at LT in the preseason before he went down. If he can show he can play like that next year than they need to drop Smith and not even think of paying him big. I can see it in Smith’s eyes he’s gonna become fat and lazy after a big pay day for an average LT.

Donovan always loafs…it’s not the first time, he’s spreaded his cancer to the OL. Iver the past few years I’ve watched Jameis run for his life while scrambling in the pocket as DSmith stood n watch as opponents corral Winston to the ground for a sack. Koetter never call players out for b m lackadaisical or showing lack of effort. For this reason the Bucs will continue b n the laughing stock of the NFL.

IMO Donovan Smith flushed his chances at a 2nd contract down the toilet yesterday.
He seems to be taking more and more plays off every week.
You can’t resign a guy like that. (And yes, he probably will sign somewhere else and get his chit together and start playing better, because that’s what happens with most ex-Bucs).

I’ve searched around and still haven’t seen a confirmation of Dirk being fired. Why wait until we are officially eliminated from the playoffs which is essentially one more loss. You can start the coaching search early and it also lets potential candidates like Arians or Schwartz that the job is available.

That’s because more is demanded of them, and they’re actually coached up!!!! Case in point Bradley Mcdougle, DJ Swearinger, even Ted Larson, and a few others are doing well elsewhere! Our coaching sucks!! I do like Monken and Buck, even though d line is underperforming but the rest all need to go, and quick!

the entire team has quit. more mental errors yesterday than a bellicheck led team commits in a decade. drops, turnovers, missed blocks, loafs etc… etc…
this franchise has zero leadership and it shows every damn year.

Which is exactly why I said last week that David should have sat. No one at One Buc cares so why should the fans. Everyone can see it. I want to support the Bucs but they simply don’t deserve their own fans’ support.

the cameras cut to smith when he was sitting on the sidelines at one point in the second half when the game was on the line…he did not have a game face on, he was sitting back with a smile on his face getting super chatty with a fellow buc – and was sporting a really relaxed demeanor as if he was having dinner somewhere…i’ve never seen a football player looking like he’s “just chilling” during a game…said dude just chills out too much…the only time i’ve really seen him beast outwas when he yoked up todd monken on the way to the locker room during the saints victory in week one…

Taking that throw added to the stat line. Without it they don’t make 500 yards and set the NFL record for the first team over 500 and scoring 3 points.. Great play!
If Fitz would’ve taken a chance, it might’ve been intercepted and screwed up his QBR.

Other coaching staffs put the fear in the heart and coach them up, that’s why players who leave here play better. They have to or it’s bye-bye.

Immediate coachectomy is the only solution to save this team. Team Glazer needs to nip this loafing in the bud.
You allow the coach to overlook loafing and you are telling players it is okay to give up on the play, game, season (heck, even the team). When the Dolphins canned their head coach a few years back, Dan Campbell put the team through an Oklahoma drill in the next practice to toughen everyone up and to see who was still awake on the team. They played at least one good game following that.
I would offer the Bucs to coach them for the rest of the season, but they couldn’t pay me enough to do it.

Does anyone honestly believe that’s how coach drew it up to end the half? Looked to me like Koetter was pissed walking off the field at halftime…
C’mon now – that ridiculous ending to the half was all on Fitzy.
With only seconds left and the ball on your opponent’s 47 – you throw the ball away if sideline outs are closely covered and with just a couple ticks left on the clock – then either give your kicker a shot at a 64 yarder or at least heave a Hail Mary into the end zone and hope you get lucky…

We have no HC and it seems like the position coaches don’t challenge Koetter’s bad decisions this is a sad situation. Koetter shouldn’t have been brought back for this year and it’s showing. Now I wonder how good or bad of a QB Jameis really is. Koetter should be fire along with whomever is loyal to him.

It is OVER ! WTF ! F****** unreal ! Bucs better get it right for their next hire ! Winning is the only thing that matters ! This franchise has been a sh*t show way to often ! I started rooting in ‘76 as a ten year old fan and have dam near bled out this year and given up on this team for good ! Can’t bring myself to root for another team at this point in my life even though I moved away from Fl. 13 years ago ! Buying the NFL tix every year and reading JBF etc….. tired of the BS ! My grown sons come over every w/e to watch this team absolutely soil themselves ! The futility is becoming to much to bare ! I sure hate to have to force myself to start rooting for the local club cause I am ashamed to admit I love these Bucs ! SON of a B*tch!

Koetter and Smitty were never the guys the Glazers should have hired to take us to the promised land. I never understood why you would hire ex Falcon guys who never got the job done in Atlanta. I’ve been sayin repeatedly since the hire they were wrong for our Bucs. Which leads me to beleive, The Glazers have no clue at all. If this Buc team does not watch out, We will go down as the worst team ever..in NFL History!!!!!! How do you gain 500 yrds in a game and only have 3 points. Past Pityful. Get us some Football minds to build this team a Winner.
Funny how we did better as a team when we were known to kick A..Defensively.

Loafing and losing go hand in hand. The offensive line just doesn’t care with the exception of Marpet and Jenson, but Jenson did get a bad timed holding penalty. The other 3 are worthless. They are lazy and obviously don’t care if their QB gets plastered.

Again, this Defense and O-line (For Running football) is so bad, that this team needs to play West Coast Offense, founded in 80s and 90s, and throw throw throw! Although Barber has shown hints of talent, Bucs are usually playing from behind and therefore Ball control and methodical approach to offense is useless. Therefore, you go shotgun most of the game, and once and awhile you run a draw play or screen or check-down to 3rd Down Back Quizz Rodgers. Because he can stay in and block, it makes him an every down back on THIS TEAM. Not every team. Or an ideal team. But running off-tackle and doing play-action pass is not going to get it done. This Bucs team needs to score 35-45 points a game to have a shot at winning. That fumble was an anomaly. That was Quizz’ 1st fumble since 2014. Fitzpatrick, on the other hand, CAN NOT turn the ball over more than once a game. No turnovers and shot gun pass will give them best shot. A made FG now and then won’t hurt either. How can any professional team have kicking woes year after year. That’s insane! Then next year, fire Koetter. Get a lineman. Get 2 defenders. Trade or cut Winston. Plenty of back up QBs out there that can start. Or just pick up Kaepernick. If he’s still in shape. This team has had enough talent at points positions to do much more. Except for Trump, this Coach and GM are as bad as it gets when it comes to decision making and leading.

Saw Donovan Smith get beat a few times in the red zone and just throw his hands up in the air while the play was still going on. We should pass on his deal, too soft and does not perform when it counts.

Sadly, Dirk Koetter is done as the Bucs’ head coach, in my opinion, and it’s his own fault. In my view, Koetter’s downfall was analytics. He started using them too much and calls his plays and makes his coaching decisions using them too heavily. Beyond the basics of blocking and tackling by the late great Coach Vince Lombardi, if you block better than the other team and you tackle better than the other team, you win – simple. The other thing Koetter should have kept in mind is whether your on offense or defense – attack! And, keep attacking until the final whistle. If you’re fourth and 10 on your own 30 with five second to go, go for it, throw a Hail Mary. It might just work and if it’s not there throw it over the end line or out of bounds, but at least try and attack. If you’re defending against a team that is in a similar position, go a deep quarters but attack the ball when it’s thrown up for the Hail Mary or if you’re especially bold, blitz. Either way attack and keep attacking regardless of the analytics. That’s the essence of football, after you learn how to block and tackle better than the other team.

Peyton Barber deserves SO MUCH BETTER.
That kid runs his ASS OFF, and I really appreciate his efforts.
I have come to believe that he can be a really good back in this league, if he has an OL that gives a crap. (other than Marpet & Dot)

Benenoch is a total waste, and Donovan isn’t far behind. In fact, Donovan got beat on the edge so many times I quit counting, and several of them resulted in sacks. Go back and watch the tape – it never lies.
