Welcoming The 10th-Ranked Defense

November 23rd, 2018

Patience will be key for Jameis Winston

In many ways, the sorry two-win 49ers team coming Sunday to the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway is a lot like the 2015 Buccaneers.

Dirk Koetter might also say 49ers are like last year’s Bucs.

Why? Because San Francisco is now 1-5 in one-score games and just doesn’t know how to win.

49ers color radio analyst Tim Ryan, a former Bears defensive tackle, has studied the Niners’ many struggles and sees a team that repeatedly fails in crunch time defensively often because of an in-game injury and depth that can’t step up, he said this week on KNBR-AM.

Like all Niners fans, Ryan is down on the team’s poor pass rush and inability to clamp down defensively.

Few Bucs fans remember that Lovie Smith’s 2015 defense finished ranked 10th in the NFL in yards allowed. But they coughed up far too many points, similar to this year’s Niners team.

On the other side of the ball, Ryan, with a 49ers bye week of extra time for film study, sees a Buccaneers defense that he called “beat to hell” by injuries and one he expects to offer little resistance to a rested 49ers team.

Will somebody step up and make a couple of plays in the Bucs’ secondary against a weak 49ers receiving corps? That’s likely the deciding factor Sunday.

Hardly anyone outside of Tampa can even name one person on the Bucs D. Lol. Do you fans remember pass defenses and strip fumbles? Haha. We barely get to see wrap up tackling.

  2. Easy Says:

Winston will add to that 55 career Int total on Sunday possibly to the fumbles lost category too.

  3. Bucsmarley Says:

Let’s get stains, Dungy or brooks for GM
And hire Kris Richards to coach

  4. Bucsmarley Says:

4 years of Winston with nothing but padded
Statistics. You people are crazy. Look at the other
New qbs. You would rather have Winston than
    Mahomes, Trubisky,Mariota, Darnold, Jackson
Mayfield. Ide take anyone of them over Winston
Your also forgetting the off field embarrassment
And showing no signs of growth. I’ve been a fan
Since the beginning and don’t care if we get
Rid of Jameis and he becomes another Doug
Williams. Seriously 4 years and making the same
Poor decisions but yet you jw blowers don’t
Get it. Do you really think we can’t find a
Better qb? Let our New GM and coach build us a respectable
    Roster. Starting with a qb

  5. Owlykat Says:

We need too much to waste a pick on a QB. We need a first round pick fo a LT, a second pick for another pass rushing DE, a third pick for a hard hitting Safety obtained in a trade for Jackson, a fourth pick Guard to develop with a new OL Coach, a fifth pick for a LB to develop who can play special teams too, and best player available for sixth and seventh pick. Use Free Agency for a proven RB and OLB.

  6. Pryda Says:

Can anyone get a pick or a turnover of some sort ? Also for the haters Jameis is here to stay for a long time and Licht isn’t going anywhere either lol

  7. Dooshlarue Says:

Oh come on now, we are gonna make SF look like SB contenders!
    Generous Jameis and crappy D……

    Go Bucs????

  8. Pete I Says:

Then losing is here to stay for a long time Pryda.

  9. MDFree Says:

Remember those Lovie defenses that we all loved to hate? Then, in comes Mike Smith like he was the savior to our defense, preaching about giving multiple looks and schemeing to our players strengths. Boy how I miss those Lovie run teams now. Never thought I’d say that but the arrow was definitely pointing up. We had what, a top 5 offense along with a top ten defense? Makes you wonder what could have been…

  10. OneBuc55 Says:

It’s sad how Winston is in a lose-lose situation with this fanbase

Already negative Winston post on this story saying how he’ll suck on Sunday; but if Winston has a great game against the 9ers and we win, these same clowns will get on here saying he did nothing because he beat a bad team…smh…

Is Winston perfect? obviously not…but he’s leaps and bounds better than any rookie or journeyman QB we can drag in here next year…I’m so sick of these Lazy boy GM’s with their unrealistic solutions that would do more harm than good…

  11. Dapostman Says:

When the Bucs defense gives up 24 pts or less:

    Winston is 18-7

When the Bucs offense scores 24 pts or more:

    Winston is 11-7

Looks like when the Bucs offense or defense plays average or better they have a chance to win. QB is one piece of a 53 piece puzzle.

Aaron Rodgers is 4-5-1. Should be 4-6 and after this week 4-7.
    Matt Ryan is 4-7.

Pretty simple to see that if the Bucs are going to win in a year that they give up 32 points a game the offense has to outscore opponent.

  12. Dom is gone ...Licht Says:

Lovies defense looked like 2000 ravens compared to the crap we see on the field every week now!

  13. LakeLand Says:

The 49ers defense are the only defense with less takeaways than the Bucs. The Bucs defense has 6 turnovers, the 49ers defense has 5 turnovers.

But the 49ers defense has more INT than the Bucs defense
The 49ers defense has 2 INT, the Bucs defense has one INT

The Bucs has a -23 turnover ratio
    The 49ers has a -15 turnover ratio

This game will be the battle of the ” Giveaways”
It will come down to…who get’s the magical INT

  14. Cgmaster27a Says:

Bucsmarley, that might be the dumbest question ever. Absolutely I’d take Jameis over most of them. Mariota cant pkay three games in a row without being Injured, Sam darnold is awful, and Jackson is a running back playing qb. That might be the most trollish statement ever.

  15. JimmyJack Says:

This is a gimme game at home vs a junky team traveling cross country and playing at 10am.

Just sucks knowing our team likely took a ton of time off for the holiday and they don’t really care if they lose. Very little intrigue as a fan.

Just want us to win to spare further embarassment. We are a joke. That’s why pro analysts are seen laughing on live TV when they talk about our team. The organization needs to hand out brown paper bags at the entrance.

  16. WalkdaPlank Says:

The Bucs defense is going to make Nick Mullens look like a HOFer while Christmas is going to come early for the 49ers as Jameis Clause comes to town handing out freshly baked turnovers left and right.

My prediction is this game is going to officially seal Koetters fate as a loss if the Giants loss didn’t already.

  17. MadMax Says:

Hope the guys are partying hard this thanksgiving weekend and come out playing hungover which it usually looks like anyway…..time to tank fellas, rooting for a loss is rooting for a win in draft position and we try again next year…..

SIGN, SEAL, AND DELIVER THAT LOSS BOYS!

  18. ben Says:

Hoping the bucs loose because of a much higher draft pick with the 49ers having only 2 wins before game ..a loss could get bucs in top 3 (i believe thats right)

  19. Kalind Says:

I know Joe won’t admit it. But I really hope we lose this game.

  20. Not there yet Says:

Haters are just angry at the world and don’t actually know football. They think this offense should be able to score on every possession and as bad as the defense has been since before Winston got here they blame him as if we would be winning with any quarterback in the league paired along with one of the worst in game head coaches in the nfl. I’m over calling you winston haters stupid which is pointless if ignorance is bliss and you can’t understand how stupid you are.

I hope he gets extended just to laugh at all of you because obviously knowing he will be here next year still doesn’t stop you from wasting time complaining

  21. Brandon Short Says:

Bruce Arians as coach, Kris Richard as DC. Give Licht one more year under year with real coaches.

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

I’m hoping for something spectacular tomorrow…not defensively or offensively but in just one area with one player.

I’d love to see JW just get through an entire game without a single turnover. Not holding my breath.

  23. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

With ya, @stpetebucsfan. That would be a great start. We shall see.

  24. Knack2Babbyyyy Says:

BucsMarley, none of those QB’s are better than Winston, besides Patrick Mahomes. Also, you stated that he’s “an off-field embarrassment and has shown no sign of growth.” Jameis hasn’t had an issue off of the field in the last 2 1/2 years, and it’s an allegation that was never reported to the police and took over a year for the accuser to come forth with the alleged incident. Everyone likes to point out the negatives, but never the positives. JW’s Dream Forever Foundation does so much for underprivileged children in the community and financially struggling schools. Lastly, about the “padded stats”, look at the great QB’s statistics through their first 50 and compare how similar they are to his. Don’t use the excuse that it was a different era.

  25. BringBucsBack Says:

Knack, it was a different era.

  26. Knack2Babbyyyy Says:

Well BringBucsBack, Dirk Koetters uncreative vertical passing offense is stuck in a different era and forces QB’s to be very aggressive. Matt Ryan struggled under Dirk for his three seasons, throwing 45 interceptions. Then Matt went on to win the league MVP in 2016. In JW’s first three seasons under Dirk, he’s thrown 44 interceptions. Not saying that Jameis will ever win league MVP, but the point is you don’t give up on a 24 year old QB with all of the potential that he has.
