Applauding Team Glazer

November 21st, 2018

Columnist salutes.

It could have been so easy.

If Team Glazer really wanted to wash their hands of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, they easily could have ordered Bucs Bit-O-Honey-snacking, Ozark-watching coach Dirk Koetter to deactivate Jameis and seen to it that Jameis was cut or traded after the season.

Heavy-metal headbanging Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports gives Team Glazer a tip o’ the hat for not taking the easy way out.

The Bucs had always planned to get another look at Jameis Winston, and I applaud ownership for not hiding behind the quarterback’s potential injury guarantees in 2019. They need to see as much of him on field and to determine if they want to bring him back, or to bolster any trade value. This team is going nowhere, and playing a journeyman 36-year old QB after the Fitzmagic had faded made no sense.

Now, as La Canfora’s colleague prickly Pete Prisco wrote this week, Jameis should be entrenched as the Bucs starter for the rest of the season for the very same reasons La Canfora gave.

Not only is Jameis trying to show Team Glazer he should be kept, but Jameis is auditioning for the new Bucs head coach.

I am quite convinced we will stick with Jameis…..

We have enough changes coming and our QB(s) are the least of our problems…..
Yes, they turn it over…..but our coaching, Defense and special teams are horrific.
    Let’s get a good Defensive minded HC…..& strong OC…
    Let’s make several trades…perhaps LVD, GMC….Djax.
Focus on Defense in the draft and pick up one Oline piece.

This team can be fixed with Jameis at QB.

  2. OneBuc55 Says:

It going to be an uphill battle the rest of the way…

This is a great test for Jameis; if he performs well down the stretch maybe it silence a few of his critics…

  3. teacherman777 Says:

    Keep Koetter!

    #1 offense in the NFL!

Fire Licht and the whole defensive staff.

Keep the offensive staff except for QB ciach and O-line coach.

Hire Dameyune Craig, Jameis’s QB coach from FSU. He was at Auburn and LSU as OC. Hes the best QB coach for Jameis.

    Go Bucs!

  4. AlteredEgo Says:

The bottom line is to get to the bottom line……must watch Jameis ,as painful as it may be, finish out the season to make a proper decision on the position…
I say draft a QB with our first pick…keep and start Jameis next season on his 5th year deal and let it sort itself out as painful as that may be…we must find out if the glass is half full or is it empty…

  5. Joe Blahak Says:

He’ll likely play “good enough” that they decide to keep him and go through the whole sh*t show again next year….That’s the “Bucs Life”…crappy decisions till eternity! 🙁

  6. 813bucboi Says:

having the #1 passing offense is no reason to keep dirk……

    what about the run game?…..
    what about the defense?…..
    what about the special teams?……
what about his poor clock management?…..
what about his inability to get production(W’s)out of winston or fitz?
what about his lack of in game adjustments?…..

saints, rams, chiefs, those teams have great offenses……the bucs have great weapons but cant score in the red zone…..

dirk has no chance of staying……glazers will clean house…..and when the do, they need to hire KRIS RICHARD…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  7. Taylor Says:

He’s not going anywhere sorry guys

  8. Eric Says:

I don’t think it will be a bit painful.

The kid is going to play great, as he did last half of last season. And the second half of this last game.

And the pro bowl rookie year, and the 9-7 season.

    Go Jameis.

Just a smidgen of defense and we can go on a streak.

  9. Mike Johnson Says:

Lets bring in a strong DEFENSIVE minded HC. Who will hire a great OC. The offense will score. But this Defense truly is in the NFl’s top 4 worst. Bring back our Calling card that won us a Sperbowl. GREAT DEFENSE

  10. Zwak Says:

Keep Koetter and bring in Dameyune Craig, JW QB coach from FSU!

Brilliant thoughts Sir, I will be thinking of you for the rest of the day..

  11. 813bucboi Says:

    alter

no way we blow a 1st round pick on a QB……that would be insane…..

the new HC will bring in a scheme that suits winston better than dirks outdated 4vert system, run the ball more to minimize winston’s mistakes and play to his strengths…..

first 3 rounds have to be defense…..DE, DT, LB

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  12. Buc'n Enough Says:

I Feel sorry for Mike Evans playing for this crap franchise.

  13. Joe Says:

Keep Koetter and bring in Dameyune Craig, JW QB coach from FSU!

Tap the brakes. Jameis’ first year under center at Florida State, Dameyune Craig was quarterbacks coach at Auburn.

  14. BrianBucs Says:

I will applaud team Glazer when Licht, Koetter and Winston are all out of here.

  15. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Keeping Jameis for next season is probably the only thing that will give me hope for next season, and draw me to the games. Go Bucs!

  16. 813bucboi Says:

why would we want dameyune craig?…lol….craig wouldnt help not one bit…..winston was throwing tons of picks at FSU and craig never got them corrected…..

    Kris Richard- HC
    Todd Bowles- DC
    Hue Jackson- OC/ QB coach
Bruce Arians- President of FB ops

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  17. garbs65 Says:

Didn’t Jameis have the same turnover problems in college? Why bring in his former coach who couldn’t fix JW when he coached him prior…what makes you think he could change JW now? I did a quick search and Mr. Craig is not credited with developing any successful NFL or college quarterback, other than JW, and we have all witnessed his development.

  18. 813bucboi Says:

thanks for clearing that up @joe….lol….and auburn aint have a QB since nick marshall…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  19. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Keeping Jameis also means spending our picks and free agency on more dire needs like the oline, defense, and RB.

  21. Wausa Says:

The Bucs need to see what Jamies can do this year and next year with a new regime.

The Bucs need to get a defensive minded head coach.
If they do that the only coach I would consider keeping is Todd Monken.

  22. Eric Says:

I will applaud if they do a nationwide search and get a real guy in to be head coach.

Not just someone from the building or something totally bizarre like the Head Coach of Rutgers.

You guys ran out of mulligans a long time ago.

  23. gotbbucs Says:

I’m not a big supporter of Winston right now, but I’m also not of the mind set anymore that they should let him walk this offseason. Obviously the remaining games on the schedule will make that decision one way or another.
If he finishes strong then I’m fine with having him on a one year $20 million prove it contract….with a new coaching staff.

  24. Lamarcus Says:

It’s an not so difficult fix

Get a proven coaching staff and release djx and Fitz immediately

Then probably want to keep GMC on a pay cut

    Lvd is a question mark

Release gholston, bueau allen, unrein and the rest of the dead weight

  25. T REX Says:

I have no doubt he’ll play well. WHY? These games are meaningless and there’s nothing to play for…when stuff is real…he folds like a cheap suit.

If you think these six games should outweigh the previous 49 then you are a complete idiot.

He’ll always be a turnover machine.

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We need a young HC with some fire and passion….not some old retread.

  27. DayOnePaul Says:

I’m not so sure you don’t bring in Norv Turner as head coach next year. He may or may not ever win you a Super Bowl, but I believe he’s won wherever he’s gone, and you know Winston would blossom under his teaching. He’s coached Troy Aikman, Phillip Rivers, Brad Johnson, Rich Gannon, Trent Dilfer, Teddy Bridgewater, and Drew Brees. And to a man, they all swear by his influence.

  28. Bucsfanman Says:

PLEASE, please stop the #1 offense crap! Open your eyes. It’s an illusion. If you need proof, look at the MNF game and compare ours to either of theirs. THERE IS NO COMPARISON!
We are #1 in passing YARDS, that’s it! Not scoring, not rushing. Oh, and we’re 3-7.
Ever wonder why we’re down so many points before half?! Imagine if we actually score on offensive possessions! Maybe scoring takes pressure off our putrid defense? Hmmm!
We are being outscored ridiculously in the first half of games. You can’t blame 500 yards of offense and 3 points on the defense!

  29. Eric Says:

    John Defilippo
    Matt Helfrich
    Bruce Arians

Off the top of my head.

  30. doolnutts Says:

813bucboi — I am not going to debate the Koetter stuff with you that is your opinion. As far as an offense we are the #1 overall total offense, not just passing offense. This includes poor production from the running game. Say what you want but this means our offense is ranked higher than Chiefs, Steelers, Rams so and and so on. Our Achilles Heel has been this defense…

Bucsfanman — Again facts are facts… The NFL matric to determine top offenses/defense is overall YARDS. Which we are #1 currently. You dont need to like it but this isn’t an opinion thing. Bucs have the first overall ranked offense in the league period end of story.

  31. 407buc Says:

Craig recruited Jameis and left after his redshirt year.Craig was on the Auburn sideline when FSU won the Natty.Fire Koetter hire a defensive coach

  32. Lamarcus Says:

Top rank offense that can’t score. Only way we are number is playing catch up from behind. Otherwise this is a bottom offense.

  33. Stu Says:

Wonder how a consistent running game would affect JW’s play?

  34. Bucsfanman Says:

doolnutts- I’m not disputing the moniker itself. It’s fact. The dispute lies with how they obtained that title with the garbage product on the field, the eye test if you will.
They are, in fact, the #1 offense in the league based on YPG but that statistic is skewed. We are 28th in rushing. Based on a 3-7 record and skewed statistics, I would say that we are “#1” in NAME only. Thus, “an illusion!”

  35. Bucsfanman Says:

doolnutts- Would YOU say that we are the best offense in the league?
I already know what the answer is. That’s my point!

  36. El Buco Realisto Says:

    @Joe

while you can applaud, and want to see the next coach with orders to “fix JW3” and another DC to try and build another defense around GMC, let me tell you what the result will be!!!!!!!!!!

It will make your negative campaign of “status woe” seem like a peep rally!!!!!! Fans will give not an inch to JW3 and the new puppet- errrrr I mean head coach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There will really be “no excuses” and week to week accountability with pitch forks out in front of One Buc to fire coaches and players!!!!!!!!!!!! And they won’t care if there is not enough coaches and personal to line up on Sunday’s if they try to patch this up!!!!!!!!!!!

joe and the sheep better think long and hard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. 813bucboi Says:

  38. Season Is Over Says:

Just forget the past four years and know that Mr. Magoo has it all figured out. Be a good little fan. This is just like the Freeman situation.

  39. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

I am going to use the Raheem quote (bad HC for the Bucs but I’ll be darned if he didn’t nail it with this quote) of I’ll tolerate you until I can replace you. Has Jameis disappointed as a franchise QB…yes, but there has been a lot of promise too. Is there a QB in free agency or next year’s draft that has more upside…I personally don’t think so. That same logic applies to Koetter as well. If you have maybe a Harbaugh or some other guy who has a proven success record IN THIS DECADE, then maybe you kick the tires. Otherwise firing Koetter for some current DC/OC just likely keeps the endless Bucs coaching carousel moving in Tampa. I hope the Glazers look at the whole picture of events that surrounded both Jameis (suspension distraction) and Koetter (key defense injuries) and ask themselves if there is an available upgrade before pulling the plug on either.

  40. Eric Says:

Imagine if we had one of those Gazelle running backs the chiefs have got.

  42. GhostofSchiano Says:

It also might help if Dork reviewed the pros and cons of trying a fake punt….deep in your own side of the field.

  43. 813bucboi Says:

  44. Eric Says:

Even if you look at points only three teams in NFC have more points than the bucs.

    Rams, Saints, Bears.

Naturally those teams are leading their Divisions.

Why? Because their defenses aren’s approaching the worst of all time. Yet folks only focus on the QB’s.

  45. ClwJB Says:

So hard to judge, what could JW be if he ever had a semblance of a defense, first Lovies mess, then Mike Smith, now Duffner -none of them can get their unit to play consistently more than 3-4 series a game

The kid has lost multiple games after taking the lead late in the game and has watched them get far behind in so many games its ridiculous, although some of his TO issues led to it as well…

What would JW be if a true discipline type coach came in and mandated safe, secure football with a solid D and more than one NFL level running back on the team…not the hoop it up 50+ passes every stinking game because the D is wretched and we only have PB to tote the rock

I was ready to yank the kid, but knowing the raw talent he clearly has and the 20 mil is middle of the league pay wise, why not hold on to him and let the new regime decide…

  46. 813bucboi Says:

    realist

    your wrong as usual!!!!!!!!

the new HC WILL fix the run game which will help winston!!!!!!!!…..something dirk could never do!!!!!!!!!!!!……

the new HC WILL also DEVELOP the defensive players that the GM draft!!!!!!!!…..something dirk could never do as well!!!!!!!……

and the new regime will have 4+years to do so…….

the only excuses that are around here are the ones you created for dirk and smitty!!!!!!!!!…..both have run out of them!!!!!!!!!

    KRIS RICHARD 4 HC!!!!!!!!!!!!

you better think long and hard!!!!!!….does dirk prefer U-HAUL or PENSKE!!!!!!!!

  47. Dapostman Says:

Been saying since Winston got benched in Cincy that he would start that last 6 games after the Bucs record is 3-7. Absolutely no reason for Fitz to keep playing. Need to see if Winston can turn the corner with the turnovers. That’s the only part of his game that’s holding him back.

All that being said would like to see an offensive coach who uses his RB’s more in the pass game. LB’s are dropping deeper because they know the Bucs don’t check it down making throws into the middle even more difficult.

Jim Harbaugh is my #1 choice by far. Wether he wants to bother himself with Tampa is another story.

  48. 813bucboi Says:

    realist

the only puppet at OBP is dirk!!!!!!!!…..lol….he’s being ordered to sit winston start fitz…sit fitz start winston….lol…..

he said he wasnt gong to fire smitty and was then ordered to fire smitty…..lol….

dirk is a dead puppet walking!!!!!!!!!…..lol…….

  49. BigMacAttack Says:

Play well, put up 500, and continue to lose. It’s all about draft picks now. 3-13 should put them in prime position for Licht to screw it up again. 😂

  50. TOM Says:

Not a big JW fan but lets see what he does the rest of the year. Griffen should be the backup, not Fitz. At some point I would like to see what Griffen can do as a starter. Whatever happened with the Paxton Lynch tryout?

  51. Bosch Says:

I will applaud the Glazers when they sell the team. BOYCOTT THE GLAZERS!!!!

  52. SOEbuc Says:

Comes down to the playbook. Koetter will never shake it up and defenses, especially the ones in our conference, knows what’s coming every time. 2nd and 5 on their 5 yard line: “Okay guys, we know he’s gonna try to run it up the middle with his sh!tty o-line. Let’s stop em.” Remember that game where OJ broke off the line twice to the outside on PA and scored two TDs? We need a coach that can come up with more interesting plays in the red zone and use them.

  53. SOEbuc Says:

*Koetter will never shake it up and defenses, especially the ones in our division

  54. DKDUBB Says:

Dameyune Craig was QB coach at FSU when Winston was red-shirting. Randy Sanders was his real QB coach at FSU. And even then, I think the “real” QB coach was Jimbo Fisher. So, I don’t really think hiring Craig is going to do much.

  55. Darin Says:

No college coaches. This team needs a real head coach of grown men. Maybe then theyll start playing like grown men. Dirk hasnt gotten worse last 3 yrs. Not sure what took so long for everyone to see it. He definitely hasnt gotten any better either. Find a real football coach. And we better not hear the Bucs are in contention with the Browns for Condaleesa Rice as the next HC.

  56. AfrikaThaRapper Says:

    @Bosch…….Exactly !!!!
