“We’re Just A Pass-First Team”

My how things have changed in a hurry.

Thank you, Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Perhaps the lasting local legacy for the Tampa Bay backup quarterback is that he forced the Bucs to realize they must play to their strengths on offense to maximize their potential.

The Bucs are loaded at receiver and Fitzpatrick racking up loads of points and setting an NFL record for 400-yard games clearly shook Dirk Koetter’s core.

Consider what Koetter was saying back in July. He was talking about how the Bucs need to rush for 2,000 yards this year because that’s what puts you in the playoffs. Even though Koetter’s logic was flawed, he was sort of telling everyone that a run-first formula could get the Bucs where they needed to go.

Today, when asked about Peyton Barber, Koetter twice said the Bucs are a pass-first team and that’s part of what’s holding Barber back.

“We’re just a pass-first team,” Koetter said.

Joe’s all good with that. Let it rip. Forge an identity. Use the multitude of weapons and put up 28 points per game, maybe even 31 if your kicker finds a way to be average.

That kind of production should win a lot of games and preserve a lot of jobs at One Buc Palace.

We kind of remind me of the Peyton Manning Colt’s teams. Poor defense, Iffy running attack but very dynamic passing game.

  2. Dubcity06 Says:

Nothing like Peyton Manning’s Colts. Jameis throws too many pics 1, they could definitely run the ball 2, they put tons of pressure on opposing passers with Mathis and Freeney 3. They were also consistantly one of the best teams in football, 4 5 6

  3. 813bucboi Says:

pass first teams are soft as hell!!!!!!!!……pats beat up on those pass happy colts until they got there defense right…..

even when manning was setting the world on fire with Denver, what happened when they played a great defense…..same with brady when he and moss were airing it out….defense and a run game shut them down…..

philly was pass first until they traded for jay agayi…..ATL was pass first a couple years ago and that cost them a SB…..

pass first team put up a lot of stats but don’t win when it counts…..

as much football as you’ve seen joe, you should know better…shame on you…

  4. Dom is gone... Licht? Says:

Yep Peyton Manning teams one of the best QBs in the history of the NFL look at his play off record … enough said. Patriots dynasty probably the best ever in today’s NFL . The year they broke all the offense of records 16 and 0 regular season Lost the one game that mattered when they faced a Superior defense. Rogers got his one Super Bowl when He had a great defense … Elway finally got his two Super Bowl’s with a great running game and good defense. Maning only one his second Super Bowl because of a great defense … Marino had no Running game and no defense equals no Super Bowl

  5. Dr. Lob Says:

Let Fitz pass first and last, bench Winston

  6. 813bucboi Says:

hell look at PITTS…..they’ve been pass happy for the last few years and haven’t won anything…..look who knocked them out of the playoffs last year….JAX….a team with blake bortles, a good defense and run game…..

    run game+defense=championships!!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  7. DB55 Says:

Lmao, I garuntee Winston wish he had Marshall Faulk for his first 4 years then Edgerrin James. Yea iffy running attack for sure.

I think Koetter meant to say we’re a pass-ONLY team.

  8. Waterboy Says:

66 drop backs and 52 pass attempts in a game is not a recipe for success.

  9. Guzzie Says:

Can’t wait till we get a coach not afraid to try to win a game instead of coaching scared playing for FGs, soft

  10. Brad Isherwood Says:

OK,….so We are a passing team.

Great….We are 10+ yards average pass,…the rest of the league is around 9.3 yards average

No Problemo. ……unless the offence pass routes can be broken after study game film.

For the Luv of God! …you cant** put all this on JW with over 46 throws a game!
The FG/Kicker had his dead Ancestors pull on God’s arm sleeve to make the 59yrd
    Win kick.
Unless this guy turns the corner. ..we have no 9 or 12 point slugfest wins when opposing D shut us down.

    10 games to go…
So…let er RIP… and Freelance some @…..the league doesn’t expect,

    We got Huge…TOWER TE’s. …For Gawd sakes. …Use them!
They can smoke a Corner or linebacker in a block,

Our Running game has Giants out front

What de Hell is the Problem???

Do you have athletes…or….complete tards, …..Dirk?

Scheme up da @ and ….rock the Bengals!

  11. Tampabucfan88 Says:

Trade fitz let’s gets sum pics

  12. Lord Cornelius Says:

We gotta go with this identity because the D isn’t going to magically turn into some elite unit this year.

I said beginning of the year a top 5-10 scoring offense plus average-ish defense = our playoff formula for 2018.

If someone told me we would have the worst defense in the NFL the first 5 weeks; I’d have thought we’d be 1-4 at best going into the Browns game; if not 0-5.

So I still think we need the same formula. Top 5-6 scoring offense & a D that isn’t bottom 3-5.

  13. Dewey Selmon Says:

Fitz is not going anywhere, he almost retired before he signed here. This is his last stop, and last season.

  14. SKomsky Says:

I get that BUT levels guys not every pass needs to be 15 + yds I see that too often just get a guy in space how about more drags and screens slants too

  15. Mike Johnson Says:

Jones flashed more than he ever has last game. Bucs need to continue to play this rookie running back to see exactly what we got. because he might not be..as advertised. We need to find an Alstot from somewheres…

  16. bucanation Says:

poor running game due too what ? poor drafting poor coaching poor evaluation of talent poor ownership Poor coaching is the winner DING DING DING

  17. bucanation Says:

JOE WHY ARE U SO FIXSATED ON JOBS I WOULD NOT WORRIE SO MUCH THE NEXT COACH WILL LET U RIDE HIS JOCK TOO JUST RELAX

  18. Dapostman Says:

As I stated in another post passing is ok when your 1st or 2nd down formation dictates it to be a 50/50 prop run or pass. It is not ok when your formation dictates that a pass is coming 100% of the time unless it’s 3rd and long when the defense knows you are passing. You are not keeping the defense guessing Koetter and or Monken. I have yet to see a draw play that I can remember when the Bucs look like they are going to pass. Please mix it up!

    #Get After It!

  19. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    Doolnuts

Except for the fact that Peyton started his career with Marshall Faulk, and then had Edgerin James. And then he won his 2nd superbowl ring with a very solid running back in CJ Anderson and the best defense in football that year.

  20. bucanation Says:

IVE TRIED TO GIVE THIS COACH A CHANCE JUST WAS SICK OF COACHING CHANGES BUT WHEN U CANT LEAD YOU CANT LEAD IT IS NOT IN HIM , DIRT HAS TO BE LEAD AND A GOOD CORDINATOR FO5R SURE . BUYT TYHATS ALL HE IS

  21. bucanation Says:

WHY DOES DIRT GET MORE TIME THEN LOVIE AND BACKSTABBED THE MAN LIKE A COWARD

  22. bucanation Says:

LOVIE SMITH DID NOT EVEN HAVE A CHANCE HERE IN TAMPA HE WAS FIRED FOR HIS DEFENSE BEING BAD 3 YEARS LATER ITS EVEN WORSE . HE WAS NOT GIVEN A CHANCE OR NOT EVEN THE SAME CHANCE THAT DIRTS GETTING NOW .

  23. Dooshlarue Says:

I think we need even more weapons for Winston.
    Ha ha ha

  24. ATrain Says:

First off If you don’t know Lovie sucked as a Coach please go watch corn field football. NFL to small College Ummmm

Jamies can’t get it done Y’all can scream Race and all that BS
His play was worse Sunday than ever.

Kicker misses a point. Jamies missed 12 points atleast

You can say NO to Fitz but this offense looked much better first two games
But Fitz is not long term answer true

Wish all u want Jamies isn’t either

  25. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Fitz? I don’t get this one. The real difference has been the change at OC. We pass too much if you ask me. Every great offense should have the ability to move the chains on the ground when they need to. When you call over 60 pass plays your rolling the dice a little. Especially with Winston. Offensive lines also need a commitment to the run. You can’t ask them to pass block for 10 plays then run.

  26. SOEbuc Says:

Koetter’s logic was flawed??? SAY WHAAAATTT!!!

  27. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

It also coincides w nfl rule changes that allow offenses to air it out, hypothetical if the bucs let jameis walk what team would take a chance on him and jameis would make that team a legit contender? bad fit in NY cause he wouldnt connect w OBJ and press would kill him. Jville w a healthy fournette would be perfect i guess because solid D, great run game & jameis just make a few throws

  28. TBTeddy Says:

@Dhusty idk OBJ is a different type of receiver he’ll go up and snatch the ball unlike Jackson. He’s crazy fast but requires Jamies to be right on the money more than any other receiver on the team.

  29. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Teddy right on w the OBJ stuff best WR in nfl. I just wish bucs build a legit defense, OL, & run game for jameis soon because the bucs have nothing now

  30. Dre Says:

Desean can’t adjust to the footballs jameis throws … open your eyes people … jameis May have arm strength but he is very inaccurate as a passer 20+ yards down the field

  31. Dapostman Says:

DeSean Jackson is a one trick pony. He has always been a one trick pony. At least they are using him on end arounds and jet sweeps. I would like to see him run more slants and crossing routes across the field. Speed can be used in more ways than one. I’m sure the Bucs will take their shots down the field and that ain’t going away.

  32. FireMikeSmith_orDie Says:

Neither throwing the ball or running the ball gets you into the playoffs. There’s one thing that will ALWAYS get you into the playoffs even if you’re starting 11 offense is a bunch of guys on this message board: that is DEFENSE.

The day when I count more posts about defense than offense on Joebucsfan.com, I will know the Bucs fan base finally gets it (assuming this site is fair representation)… and if the fanbase and Bucs media gets it, they will ultimately make their feelings known to MANAGEMENT.

Maybe Koetter will one day get it, too? Lord knows, it took him nearly 3 years to figure out Mike Smith was not the answer… and the major problem with Mike was that he tried to make his players fit the scheme instead of the other way around, otherwise it was not like the guy didn’t know his Xs and Os.

  33. Not there yet Says:

Yea I’ve heard enough and it’s just to obvious he’s delusional. This is obviously a pass first league now but that doesn’t mean throwing 52 passes with a turnover prone quarterback. Guess he’s pass first except on the one yard line in your own territory, what a horrible excuse for a coach he is

  34. BigMacAttack Says:

Joe likes to say some of us are delusional about Fitz. Truth is this offense has never looked better than they did with Fitz to start the season. We finally got to see what a powerful weapon Djax is. It really was magic. Chicago’s defense derailed everything but Mack has that line thumping. Jameis is good but he hasn’t done anything close to what Fitz did in those games. Koetter has ignored these facts which is okay, but why not check it out and see if Fitz can do it again. Cincinnati is the perfect place to find out. BTW Jameis hurt his leg last week which may have affected his passing late.

  35. jjbucfan Says:

Under Koetter we are a pass first team—except on first down where we historically run the ball for between 2 and -2 yards and put our QB’s in a terrible, predictable situation.

  36. Reach87 Says:

Lord Corn speaks the truth (as he generally does)! Agree and would add that perhaps the defense needs to not be bottom 8 in points allowed (unless special teams gets better). Doable. Its a week to week thing (injuries/opponents/etc), but doable. Go Bucs!

  37. Not there yet Says:

Saying your a pass first team is a really pathetic excuse for why the quarterback was your leading rusher. Should have fired everyone last year because we’d probably have a better record
