“Just One Glaringly Obvious Issue”

October 30th, 2018

Trade for a first- and second-round pick or save for the next head coach to evaluate, explains a former NFL QB.

Is it fixable?

A former NFL QB grappled with that question yesterday while talking about Jameis Winston on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

For those unaware, ex-Chiefs and Browns QB Brady Quinn is a co-host weekdays on “The Blitz,” the NFL Radio mid-day show.

Quinn dove into the situation surrounding the on-field troubles and benching of America’s Quarterback and acknowledges it’s a messy situation.

The film on Jameis looks good, Quinn says, except “just one glaringly obvious issue. Of course, Bucs fans know that that is: giving away the football with astounding proficiency.

“Is it fixable? I think so,” Quinn said of Jameis’ turover woes. “But part of me in the back of my mind thinks you kind of are what you get to the league and you’ve played this much football. It’s really hard to train [to fix] that, unless you take the opportunity for him to throw those picks out of his hand. So you gotta make a decision, is he going to be your guy in the future, but I don’t know if this coaching staff is going to be your coaching staff.

“I don’t want to speculate whether they are or they aren’t but you can speculate whether or not Jameis Winston is going to be the future at quarterback. If he is, then you gotta play him, you gotta go through the lumps, and you gotta hope that you, you know, come out on top and you’re able to win some more football games down the stretch. But if you don’t think he is, then I really think you need to go fishing today and you need to try to figure out what your [trade value] is. And you really gotta like the value somebody is willing to offer.”

Quinn went on to say the Bucs should look at an immediate trade for Jameis only if the Bucs can get a first- and second-round pick because the capability is there within Jameis.

Otherwise, Quinn said, hang on to Jameis and let a potential new coach evaluate Jameis and make a decision.

Interestingly, Quinn spoke just prior to Dirk Koetter announcing Ryan Fitzpatrick would start Sunday against the Panthers. Quinn was dead against that move and believed not only should Koetter have stuck with Jameis against the Bengals, rather than bench him, they should start Jameis the rest of the season to really see what they have.

You’ll lose what’s left of the locker room if he starts the rest of the year.

  2. Ray Rice Says:

One draft bust talking about another is just pointless.

  3. uckinator Says:

One problem Mr. Quinn…Coach Koetter and company won’t have a job with Famous Jameis “learning” the QB position after 4 years. It also sucks for the fans and the team. Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. My suggestion ? Pick up a veteran QB in the off season and work on the Lines and the defensive backfield in the draft. These receivers are so good, most experienced signal callers would win.

  4. Joe Blahak Says:

UGH…He is slow with decisions, he is slow with delivery, he stares down the main target. He has 4 years in the league and looked like a rookie fresh out of college in the last game. It’s not fixable. He telegraphs the picks. He sucks. It’s over….END OF STORY!

  5. voiceofreason Says:

a first and a second is fantasy land at this point.
also, starting him right now is a terrible idea because he is losing the games by himself. you play to win the game.

  6. AlteredEgo Says:

So Jameis’s 3rd coach is his answer? …. For Jameis sake I hope coaching is the answer…. but after watching him in college and the NFL I don’t think his problems are correctable… it is time to draft another QB with the Bucs first round pick next year, keep Jameis in 2019 and after the 2019 season everyone will know if Jameis is the answer here in Tampa

  7. jjbucfan Says:

If he is our guy, as owners you make a statement and fire Koetter, trade D Jax and trade Fitzpatrick to show the team you are committed and believe in your Quarterback. If he is not- you trade him now!! So if Fitzpatrick starts and throws 3 picks in the first half again, what does Koetter do? Does he go back to Jameis? What message does that send to the team. Dumbass has completely boxed himself in. Koetter at this point is an ass clown in addition to sh*tty HC. JMO of course.

  8. Resurrection of Duff Says:

I agree!!!! its not fair to draw conclusions on a 4 YEAR QUARTERBACK. The Glazers should have Licht draw up a new contract for the kid. WTH is going on hear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. BrianBucs Says:

Jason Licht set this franchise back at least 5 years when he made the horrible mistake of squandering the first overall pick in the draft by drafting Winston, a QB coming out of college that everybody knew was and would be a turnover machine in the league, who also had a questionable character and a checkered past. The franchise wasted 4 years with him, then will have to draft or trade for the next starting QB.
Licht has done everything he could to make Winston successful but he has failed.
Now the question is, will Licht continue to beat a dead horse and still try to make Winston the face and star of Tampa Bay, setting the franchise back even farther, or will he have to guts to go to the Glazers and admit that he made a mistake and let them know that it is time to cut loses and move on.
At this point, every failure or transgression that Winston has on or off of the field is on Jason Licht’s head. Period

  10. Robert Says:

I’d say the 3 glaring issues character, stupidity, turnovers

  11. DBS Says:

They already know what they have. ATM that can get the offense to score in the red zone as offten as needed. But now get to the red zone and start throwing pics. It is not only bad that he does it, but where and when and how he does it.

  12. Greg Says:

People kill me with th 1st round pic stuff. Hes a loser! Hes a turn-over machine!, if you trade for him you only get him for half a year and if he gets hurt you will owe him over 20 million and you may not even want him after this year! There IS NO MORE TALK ABOUT POTENTIAL!!! he is what he is. Jacksonville may make a move but they would cut him after the year or work out some other lower salary.

  13. DBS Says:

    ^cant

  14. Dewey Selmon Says:

If it wasn’t Winston it would of been Mariotta. Stop with the we shouldn’t of drafted him.

  15. Resurrection of Duff Says:

If there isn’t a trade today, the 20 million dollar plan should be executed ASAP.

    QB 1 FitzMagic
    QB2 RG4
QB 3 Jameis “I Got To Get Better” Winston

QB3 is inactive for the rest of the games!!!!!!!!!

    Come January CUT HIM!!!!!!!

  16. Bird Says:

    He almost loss browns game

Fitz would have won by 2 tds
Fitz would have won against Atlanta.
Fitz would have won against bengals if he came at half

These are some of the worst defenses in nfl cause of injuries and Jameis struggled. He should have shined. And you want to give him 100 mil.

  17. Lord Cornelius Says:

That’s the issue as someone pointed out. Job security of coaches vs what is best for the team long term. What would have been nice is Winston throwing 2-3 TDs with no turnovers and us having an easy win in Cincy and this not being a topic.

  18. Zam Says:

4 years they’ve had to fix it. I’d like to hear of any quarterback that miraculously fixed this problem 4 years in. 4 games maybe, not 4 years.

  19. Buckylove Says:

JWs basic problem is lack of accuracy. Half his stuff is good, the rest misses high/low, right left. Only great receivers make him as good as he is and covers up the number of bad throws he has. But He knows he has the issue and it makes him slow and unsure and that compounds the problem. And he is worse under pressure. Unless some QB guru can figure out and correct the cause (posture, footwork, whatever), he will always be a marginal choice.

  20. csidedave Says:

Yeah and if we only would have stayed with Josh Freeman a little longer, we’d be a playoff contender team now. LOL.

  21. VaTom Says:

There are two things about Jameis that glare at me when I watch his play.

    1. He rarely hits a receiver in stride.

    2. His receivers are normally adjusting to HIS throw. (Related but different)

Bonus glaring problem…dude can’t get on same page as Desean Jackson.

There’s no doubt in my mind Jameis is the best QB the Bucs have ever drafted. He makes miracles happen. But there is no denying he is a one man wrecking crew. This dude is off the rails. This ISNT one game. This is a body of work. Joe’s said last week Jameis is just the sorta guy who’s gonna make two mistakes a game. I’d take THAT Jaemis.

Why can’t he hit a receiver on a deep ball IN STRIDE (Absent the one to Mike Evans Sun we rarely see it). Is it that he needs to see his receiver hit the SPOT on his route and stop? Because that’s what it looks like. Jameis throws to parked receivers. Something is wrong where he doesn’t appear to be able to anticipate/trust where his guy is going. Fitzpatrick is tossing the ball seconds BEFORE Jackson is arriving at his spot. Jameis is throwing it seconds AFTER Evans is arriving at his mark. Or at least that’s how it looks. And because Jameis is waiting his eyes are fixed in his target. And that’s what the opposing secondary sees. They just keyed on him and waited for him to float balls to parked receivers. Is his release too slow? Is it his eyes? Is it anticipation? Whatever it is it’s hard to believe ithere s a fix that doesn’t require he relearn the position from the mental sde.

“Quinn was dead against that move and believed not only should Koetter have stuck with Jameis against the Bengals, rather than bench him, they should start Jameis the rest of the season to really see what they have”.

Really? REALLY? After 3+ years with the same coach, we don’t know what we have in Jameis? Well, Mr. Brady Quinn, let me tell you what we have: we have a QB with all the physical tools but without good judgment….and…a QB who has said time and again that he is a gunslinger. I was here in 2002 when the Bucs won the Super Bowl. They won it with a journeyman QB who allowed his teammates to make plays without making errors, which is what we need on this team.

  23. cw_buc_crazy Says:

Unfortunate as of now, 4 hours of trade deadline, there are not even rumors that any team is interested on JW.
That is bad news for BUCS. We are stuck with him……

  24. Boogie-Nightz Says:

THIS IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING I HAVE HEARD SINCE THAT GAME ENDED. WHO IN THE H – E DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS WOULD TRADE A 1ST OR 2ND ROUND PICK FOR THIS GARBAGE QB! AND YOU PEOPLE CLAIM TO BE EXPERTS?! I NEED ANOTHER DRINK. I AM PRETTY SURE I WONT MAKE IT THROUGH THIS WEEK SOBER.

  25. Boogie-Nightz Says:

    @RAYRICE

    THANK YOU. GOOD POINT!

  26. 813bucboi Says:

  27. Boogie-Nightz Says:

    @DEWEYSELMON

AGREE WITH YOU AS WELL. MARIOTA STINKS TOO!

  28. WalkdaPlank Says:

Quinn’s thought process promotes the “job interview” year for Jameis Winston, which is a good way to lose a locker room. As of this point right now, all of the evidence says Fitzpatrick gives the team the best chance to win. If you deny this, you are either willingly blind or haven’t watched. Fitzpatrick gets more out of the same players Jameis plays with (i.e DJax) and he puts up better numbers and most importantly, less turnovers.

You really think the players are just going to stand by and let a turnover machine continue to start without getting involved in the locker room, or worse, on the field? It shows them that their head coach doesn’t care about winning, he only cares about saving Jameis and not the team.

No matter how good or bad Fitz plays, I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Jameis anyway.

  29. Conte Piscatelli Says:

One thing wrong? I guess Brady doesn’t watch tape off the bucs. First we all know about Jameis issues with decision making, second we all know Jameis has issues with staring down receivers, and third unlike any true franchise quarterback, Jameis is NOT able to maker all the throws. He is a one trick pony who tries to force balls to the middle of the field because he struggles with anything outside the numbers or beyond 20 yards down field. If you watch the safeties on the two long passes for the bucs on Sunday they were standing still when the receiver ran past them. Why? Because the book on the Jameis says stay put at 15-20 yards from the line of scrimmage and the ball will come to you.

  32. miken Says:

    your not getting a 1 or2

  33. DBS Says:

I think Talib said just about the same thing when he played against him last. Watching tape on Jameis they knew exactly what he would do . And there was no problem because they would get their chances to pick him.

  34. meh Says:

I think we should take a ham sandwich for him.

  35. Mike in MO Says:

I’d be happy with a 7th personally. But that is asking a lot.

  36. T REX Says:

Even now Joe pines for America’s Great Turnover Machine.

3 years from now they’ll still be posting Winston articles.

    Good riddance.

  37. Mike Johnson Says:

Quinn is spot on about one thing though. That is..You bring in a new HC and let him evaluate Jameis next year. Then you make the decision to pay him long term or not. He’s already here for one more yr. And nobody is giving up a 1st rder at this point for him. Maybe not even a 2nd. Is jameis fixable? maybe..with a new HC. maybe not. Keep him one more yr and lets evaluate this griffin backup. I want to see what he’s got. Koetter is not going to reach 500 this yr I don’t think. Let him go fishin with his raod dog Smitty.

  38. stpetebucsfan Says:

“only if the Bucs can get a first- AND second-round pick because the capability is there within Jameis.”

Wow Quinn is as bad of a NFL analyst as he was a player!!! Are you freaking kidding me? Why bother with that speculation. There is NO team in this league right now that would surrender first AND second round pick for Jameis. If there is…hustle their butts right now and make that deal!!!!

Record setting turnover machine….hard head…and a constant liability off the field. Stick a fork in JW…he’s done. HE DOES NOT SEE THE FIELD…HE STARES DOWN TARGETS….those 4 picks were not just picks…they weren’t JW being Favre trying to make a play…they were horrid passes as if the Bengals were playing with invisible uniforms!!!

“When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”

JW has shown us over and over and over again WHO he is both on and off the field.

  39. BradentuckeyBuc Says:

None of those interceptions were even good defensive plays, they were simply terrible throws/decisions…and that doesnt include three more that were dropped. He lit it up in preseason when there was no pressure. Just goes to tell you it’s 100% between the ears.

So I am the point where I am saying whatever. But that being said I love how we are letting a proven mentally weak locker room and their “feelings” effect the future of our franchise. Again another sign of weakness and poor coaching by the joke of an organization. Just ask yourself this question, regardless of the situation, do you think Belichick gives a crap what anyone on his team thinks about who he plays and who he doesn’t? That my friends is why they are who they are this is we are who we are.

It’s a sad day for Joe because Joe has been a huge advocate for America’s Turnover Machine, Pro bowler Jameis Winston. For some reason this Joe just can’t believe the Bucs let such a talented QB walk away for no good reason….
Joe is going to go to Abe’s Place and drown himself in crappy Bud Light and nuclear chicken wings and then awaken fresh to start his drum pounding for our next great FRANCHISE QB…….

People talking about dork saving the locker room are people thinking dork will somehow save his job with Fitz. Stop blaming Winston for the bucs horrible season. Winston 1-1 on the season. Winston is not the reason we’ve lost 4 games with the number one offense. Fitz looked just as bad in Pittsburgh and Chicago losses. This is on the amateur head coach and all will be well once dirk is gone unless someone is saying Fitz can’t play for any of coach

I guarantee if we had gotten Shanahan then he wold have been developed better.Kotter is not a QB Guru. the only way Jameis would have made a hundred million if he actually played well, no team including us would pay average QB a hundred million dollar contract. Neither happened.

You can make an argument for bad kicking effectively limiting game planning and you’d be absolutely correct. But that year, there’s no 3-2-1 point losses. If I’m not mistaken, I very well could be, the lowest pt spread loss was 5pts. And it’s not a 2 missed fg game.

I’m not disagreeing with the overall idea, just that specific year and the fact that the losses were not very close as to be decided by a missed fg.

I’m ready to move on from this now. I will always root for him as well. But I just think it was Dirk more than Jamies. Cause if you are a young quarterback coaching staff is very important. Look what happen with MATT Ryan. When he had Dirk he played bad but when Dirk left he became a mvp just like Freeman the running back the next year he became a super start running back now so what that should tell y’all it’s Dirk. Now draft the quarterback from WV give him a new coach and build a defense and running game. I really don’t know how good Jones is now when you look at the falcons running back or Winston.

how many years got Mitch Trubisky and how many coaches…. for embarrassing Bucs??
How come that are left 50 min from trading deadline, and no team on NFL want to trade for the ONE???

O’Neil… it ,Jamyth, was not coaching… unless the taught him to throw ill advised passes and scramble around making a bad situation worse…. man up ! … this is 99% Owned by Jameis! Man up !!! and stop crying like a 5 year old watching his balloon drifting into the clouds.

  92. cmurda Says:

This whole feeling bad for Jameis thing is hogwash. Dude is a multi millionaire. Had 4 years now to prove himself and is actually worse than he was in his rookie year and has more talent on offense now. Fitz had a rough game and a half so far this year with 2 and a half great games. Fitz easily outplayed Jameis and no matter how much love he was showered with after Game 2, he’s still a journeyman that has always been limited by his poor decisions. He can spin it but he also makes ill-advised throws and too many turnovers. With all that said, he makes far less bad decisions and far less bad throws compared to Jameis. That’s just sad. I’ve been among the most vocal Jameis supporters on here even after his embarrassing Uber grab but it was always do or die for Jameis this year and he died.

I thought we missed a fg to go to OT vs the Raiders then lost by 7 in OT. I could be wrong but I can look it up. Lmk

A 24 year old quarterback can’t get better but a 37 year old quarterback still can get better who played for 8 different teams and never played in a play off game ok boy this fan base is sick .

  95. AlteredEgo Says:

O’Neil.. no one is saying Jameis can’t get better… thing is the NOBODY is going to give him the typical Big Payday contract… someone will give him a FA deal but not anything close to starting franchise $20,000,000.00. a year money and I doubt the Bucs will the team to ink his second deal

  96. Oneilbucs Says:

Alterego I don’t lose no sleep when the bucs win or lose trust me .

  97. cmurda Says:

@Oneil Which is it. Are you ready to move on or not? You’re flip-flopping more than a fish out of water. Nobody said Fitz was the long term answer. He’s 35 years old by the way. Besides, it’s not about age. Jameis makes the same mistakes every single game. He’s a guaranteed at least 2 turnovers a game. This has been his M.O for 4 years now. It doesn’t matter if he’s 20, 24 or 44, insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and continuing to regret it. What you see is what you get with Jameis and it’s not franchise QB material. We will have to eat some contract and likely not have good trade proposals on the table for him. I expect Jameis to continue to get opportunities as the season goes along and I expect exactly the same thing we have seen for 4 years from him. Mediocrity at best.

  98. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Well the trade deadline has passed and Jameis and Ryan are both still here. So let’s just gather up the troops, all of us, from both sides of this fence, and realize we all rooting for the same team… the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

For better or worse, no matter what happens, whether Ryan is in there or whether Jameis gets another shot at some point, we pull for them to kick ass and for this team to win some games.

We definitely all have more in common than we don’t when it comes to the NFL. — GO BUCS

  101. NPRSageBoy Says:

There’s no quick fix here. This is an off season relearning process that requires Jay Miss to relearn or modify his mechanics (footwork and release). He’ll have to modify his decision making process, too. This is gonna require a full time QB guru within the structure of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement. Not an easy task.
Should the Glazers invest 20M in a fifth year total overhaul, not to mention that Jay Miss is one Uber ride away from a total ban from the NFL?
Time to move on folks, no matter how painful this seems.

  102. Architek Says:

I’m not about to pay him $20M to find out….

It’s always easy to find out with someone else money.

Mahomes looking real good in KC isnt he…….hmm

  103. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Now that DJax wasn’t traded, just cut him. Pay him his $$ to go away. It’s obvious nobody wanted him or he would’ve been traded.

  104. Jameis Almighty! Says:

Mahomes also had a year to sit behind Alex Smith and wasn’t thrown into a LosingbLovie smith dumpster fire.

  105. Jameis Almighty! Says:

The Lovie Smith dumpster fire is nothing compared to the Dirk Koetter and Jason Licht Forest Fire… those are Lovie’s guys too. Cut that whole dad gum Lovie cable and free Tampa from the losing.

You know I’m a fan because you don’t just come here to shoot your mouth off or boast about your football prowess.

You bring facts and research and I appreciate that.

I do not have a major problem admitting I’m wrong. During the draft debate I wavered between JW and MM settling on JW after 87’s long sales pitch. LOL… But I do not blame 87…I was WRONG in either choice…you and some others…AE? said we should trade down.

Hindsight is 20-20 but clearly you were RIGHT LUV.

  108. Trench War Says:

“Quinn was dead against that move and believed not only should Koetter have stuck with Jameis against the Bengals, rather than bench him, they should start Jameis the rest of the season to really see what they have.”
    ________________________________________________________

Well it’s pretty obvious Mr. Quinn doesn’t give a crap about us fans. While sitting @ 3-4, there’s still the possibility to right this ship when we are still feasibly in it. Quinn is basically saying just give up, and to my ears that’s not the advice I want to hear. We keep Jameis, and if we continue to slide backwards from here where we are definitely out of picture then we toss JW back in. The Eagles are sitting at 4-4, do you think they’re talking about shutting down? Not a chance, only losers think that way.

  109. jjbucfan Says:

    st pete,
trading down was not an option, we hadn’t had a good QB in 20 years, neither of these guys are producing so far. Both have their moments, but Mariota can’t stay on the field. Jameis is still 24 about to be 25. He has thrown 76 TDs or something like that and a sh*t ton of INTs. He still has less INT’s than Manning, Favre, Manning, Marino and others 48 games into their career. He will improve with a HC that believes in him, Dirk didn’t want him from day 1, he was in the #imwithmariota crowd. As soon as Jameis started stinking, he threw him under the bus in pressers, that is not the way to “raise a QB”. Koetter should have been fired when Smitty was, simply because he refused to fire him earlier. Monken and Jameis seem to get along so he should have been elevated like Duffner was (still think it should have been Buckner). Defense still stinks but I guess is improving. Jameis gave them 7 by himself, but even after the INTs the Defense failed to stop them. We have like 5 takeaways in 7 games, I can’t believe there is no talk about this. I have never seen anything like it in 42 years of watching football. So while BOTH of our QBs are handing the ball away at an alarming rate and our WR’s are dropping balls again at alarming rates, our defense is hardly helps our winning ways by picking up our QB after a mistake. There is a lot wrong with this team it is not just one man, though this week it was totally on Jameis. Catanzaro leaves us chasing points every week, he has lost us games and almost lost us games and he hasn’t been replaced. My guess about that is we are waiting for Matt Bryant to come back so we can take Georgio Tavecchio (sp.) and ruin his kicking career next, LOL.

  110. lambchop Says:

Brady Quinn is the source of this “knowledge”. Enough said. The dude is projecting his lousy career through his rosy colored glasses.
