Injuries Not Hurting Run Defense

October 6th, 2018

Something to smile about.

Yeah, the Bucs have a garbage defense. But if one is to believe the numbers, it is only through the air that the Bucs are getting taken to the woodshed.

The good people of NFL Films have studied the film, and per their stats, by way of BSPN’s NFL Matchup, the Bucs appears to be among the better run defenses in the league. On first down.

The goal of most defenses is to get the opposition into third-and-long situations. And when it comes to stopping the run on first down the Bucs are allowing yards per carry, which isn’t bad.

Only seven other teams have given up more total rushing yards on first down than the Bucs. And remember, this is a unit that has had to deal with injuries, specifically at tackle with both Mitch Unrein and Beau Allen missing games.

Hey, anything positive about this defense is something to celebrate, no?

I believe you meant only seven teams have given up LESS yards on first down.

  4. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

The fact that the Bucs are 8th BEST in this stat merely means that we are getting absolutely annihilated in the passing game on first down. Why worry about running against us? Sadly.

  5. Jsmalls Says:

This is a meaningless stat, add this with attempts and a clearer picture will emerge. Cards are one of the ‘worst’ yet hagebthe same average as Bucs.

  6. Jsmalls Says:

    Meaningless stat

  7. Bird Says:

    Did you say bum defense?

It’s time for players to say something. Studs are studs. But Kwon and Lavonte and gmac look average. I would be pissed. Run left when you know it’s right

You know they are talking behind the scenes I signed the petition for mike smith fire. Nice man. Terrible coach for today’s nfl. Put him in planning position and save face. Koetter knows it. He will make change.

  8. Bird Says:

I just took a nasty dump. Drank a lot of crown and coke last night.

The turd looked like Mike Smith.

    It was sweaty.

  9. Bird Says:

I’m Orlando guy. Graduated from UCF. Not a homer though

Is USF legit ? Just curious. Cause that will be the game that may or may not put them in playoff scenario

  10. Not there yet Says:

1st down rush defense? That’s meaningless to a team giving up the most points in the nfl. I know you have to come up with content but this is a useless that

Know what is really pathetic & sad?

Remember how much we hated Lovie Smith’s defense when he was here?

Mike Smith….. ALL 3 SEASONS…. worse YPG defense than Lovie in either of his seasons. — Wow, that is pathetic.

  12. Defense Rules Says:

There’s this weird concept called BALANCE that seems to have been eluding the Bucs’ defense for years Joe. Easy to stop the run if you (1) build your defense specifically to do that; and (2) focus your defensive scheme on doing that. Cherry-picking stats is akin to using the argument that bullet-proof vests work if someone shoots you in the middle of the torso … (run defense analogy?) Great argument until they shoot you in the head where you have no protection (pass defense analogy?).

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

Like the Pic here of Smitty Joe. Its like he’s sayin with that smile, See you from the pressbox next game!! LMAO.

  14. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Speaking of that, @Mike Johnson,,, I am not so sure it is great having your D Coordinator in the pressbox to begin with. Isn’t better when your DC is actually on the field, can look his guys in the eyes, and actually coach them?

  15. Buccfan37 Says:

Bird.. my take is that USF will lose to UCF in the final game of the season. UCF does have that leading win streak going.

  16. Mike Johnson Says:

TB Demon, Posters here say its not a big deal. Its not..when you are winning! Since he’s been here, Smittys has sat upstairs in that pressbox for his so called..better viewing of his Defense. Its not helped him or the team one Iota. You’d think..he would try something different. But thats Smitty. Doing and running the SOS he ran in ATL. I do believe his time has come and gone in this NFL. ATL owner Arthur Blanks knew it and fired him. Koetter will go down right along with Smitty. Just as well.

    ANy update on Beckwith?

  18. unbelievable Says:

LOL I’m sorry but giving up an average of 4.1 yards per rush is not good.

    What a reach.
