Healthy Dose Of Joe Mixon?

October 27th, 2018

Big Joe Mixon fan.

The way Bucs coach Dirk Koetter is talking, it sounds like he has a hunch what the Bengals are going to try to do Sunday.

The Bucs are pretty close to the bottom of the barrel in rush defense. Then again, they are pretty close to the bottom of the barrel in just defense.

So with that in mind and the Bengals getting back woman-punching Joe Mixon, it sure sounds as if Koetter expects his buddy Marvin Lewis to pound the Bucs with a generous dose of Mixon.

“Now that [Mixon is] healthy, you can really see that he can do everything,” Koetter raved yesterday. “He can cram it, he can cut it back, he can out-run you, he’s good in the pass game. I mean, he’s really a complete back.

“They’ve had injuries at running back between him and [Giovani Bernard]; they’ve had some injuries but Mixon is definitely somebody that’s got our full attention.”

Now what can defensive coordinator Mark Duffner do about it? When he took over for ousted Mike Smith, Duffner, reaching back to his roots working for Woody Hayes, said stopping the run will be a priority.

Last week was an encouraging debut when his defense pitched a shutout in the first half, which was unthinkable given what Bucs were conditioned to do with Smith. Now comes a bigger test with a better back.

Will the new Bucs defense be up to the task?

I hope they blast that POS put him on IR

  2. 1sparkybuc Says:

Jim Brown threw a woman through, not out, a second story bedroom window. He did that as a grown man with time to think about it. Mixon slugged a girl in a reflex action as a young man. Both were/are great football players. The NFL hires people who can be violent, hopefully just in games.

now let us watch, and see what the 12th pick in the draft can do, vea can you hear me

  4. Robertg Says:

Buccaneers rush defense is 6th in the league, how is that at the bottom of the league?

  5. HowToSpellRhonde Says:

Lol. Joe, you mixed up Bucs offensive rush stats with defensive.

  6. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Tried telling people on here in the 2017 offseason that Dalvin Cook was injury prone and over-rated. Leonard Fournette, Kareem Hunt, and Joe Mixon were the cream of the running back crop that year. I was also incredibly high on James Connor as a late rounder that year.

Now trust me when I say that Ronald Jones will end up being one of the better RB’s taken in 2018.

    Gunslinger

I agree let’s see what the 12 th pick can do

But the 1st pick has 4 years and we are still waiting does Vea only get a few games???

When the 1st pick lives up to his position I will look at the others

  8. Dewey Selmon Says:

John Ross is out. Stop Mixon and double up AJ Green. I look for them to try and force it to their TE with Kwon out of the middle now.

  9. TheBucsAnthem Says:

ROJO is already a Bust given the position he was taken in the draft and how he isn’t even contributing to this offense.

ROJO will go down as one of the worst draft picks in Bucs history.

Our offense really is wrong style of offense for him….. if he was used like Reggie Bush or a Darren Sproles then he’d be successful

But the Bucs offense is built to pound the ball with a big back with power and that’s why Peyton Barber looks so much better.

    It’s all about schemes fellas

I hear ya man. I never ever root for an injury….. but would make an exception for him after the way he beat up that girl. F’ing coward.

  11. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    Anthem, Mama’s wrong again.

  12. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

@TheBucsAnthem – “ROJO is already a bust…. and will go down as one of the worst draft picks in Bucs history”

    ——————

You could certainly be right and you are entitled to your opinion. Remember this though… Ronde Barber, at this point in his career, was being called a bust and a total waste of a draft pick. —- It is still awfully early to say.

  13. Not there yet Says:

Well yea gameplan guess week and we know what happens when they guess wrong, it’s not like they will make in game adjustments. I feel ok not having confidence in this coach since the consensus around the league is they will lose

  14. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs need to watch out for the Bengals Slot WR, Tyler Boyd

  15. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I know it’s early me saying this about ROJO

………..but just the simple fact that even when he’s on the field he doesn’t even look like an average back or he hasn’t even flashed any kind of indicators that’ll he’ll be productive is downright eye-opening.

He got paid……….he can’t outrun average college defenders……and now he’s gone all mental and that’s why he runs with hesitation now instead of running with his instincts.

The RB and all of them great highlights we seen of him from USC…….that’s not the same player we see now on the bucs.

the ROJO of USC IS DEAD NOW

the bucs now have an average RB…….

  16. BucEmUp Says:

Too bad Smith wasn’t fired sooner huh?

  17. LakeLand Says:

Mike smith should have never been hired in the first place

  18. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Dont forget about me!

    8 receptions, 140 yards and 3 tds”

    AJ Green

*Swifty, our 199lber doesnt have the physicality and temperment to play in the NFL The aloof mental midget also has alittle of VH3itis…

199lber is spacey between the ears and seems like he is playing his own game ala schizophrenic VH3 and Nowhere Spence

  19. LakeLand Says:

    Kobe

AJ Green and Tyler Boyd should have a field day

  20. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Hey Lake

It amazed me that Cleveland wanted to run the ball against the worst passing defense in history…?

    Cinn wont make that mistake…

this will be Chicago part 2

AJ,Boyd and Mixon is going to make our Bucs secondary look like a bunch of headless chickens

Our oline is going to get ripped apart…and Klueless is still going to make JW pass deep on 7 step drop patterns

  21. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I agree with Kobe (god that hurts saying that)

This will be another loss for the Bucs………..but I think the bucs won’t lose as bad but they’ll lose by atleast two scores….maybe by 14 points

The Bengals team are a good team and Marvin Lewis is a masterful game planner.

This will be ugly this Sunday………………I hope all you bucs fans got your drinks ready

  22. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Got ’em ready, Anthem, but hoping you are wrong, brother!

  23. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Tampa Bay Demon

I’m sorry to disappoint you brother……….but get your drinks ready

Think about this for a second:

The Bucs BARELY beat a BAD browns team in OT by a prayer kick against a ROOKIE QB

Now bucs faces a ProBowler QB in Dalton and a good HC………..

    …………yeah

  24. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

I am actually not remotely worried.
    I have Bucs 41 Bengals 21
but then again, all my friends do know that I am the eternal optimist.
You may have to let me have it on Monday, Anthem — haha

  25. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Schwifty

Certainly accept your point about lots of NFL players being violent off the field as well as on. I don’t think it’s as prevalent now as it used to be because the dollars are just too huge. Dudes not only have to be violent but stupid as well for risking multi million dollar paydays. Can we all say Ray Rice.

If I disagreed with anything in your post it was daring to compare Joe Mixon to IMHO the greatest NFL player of all time. I realize there is so much competition for that title many of you will wish to disagree and I respect that. But I’m old enough to have watched Jim Brown play and because Cincinnati did not have the Bengals when I was young we got the Browns games much as you guys got the Dolphin games before the Bucs.

I’ve watched a LOT of Jim Brown’s games. Mixon will NEVER be a Jim Brown. He may be a pro bowler and an excellent player but Brown was in a class by himself. Ten awesome years and then walk away on top.

BTW…a question for Joe and all. I think it was just yesterday we had the thread about Marvin Lewis friendship with DK and the piece of advice that Koetter says has stuck with him. Throw the ball deep. Now Marvin’s going to eat his own advice and go to a running game on a team with Andy Dalton and AJ Green?

But why would any team think they could throw the ball deep against the Bucs…with our outstanding CB’s and safeties and the blistering pass rush who’d risk it? OK snark font off now. lol

  26. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Ronald Jones is 208 not 199. And he has a tremendous amount of god given talent and ability. He also is not lazy, and he’s not stupid. Not every players path to success is the same, some are front loaded and then fall off, some struggle early and become consistently very good and so on.

You can keep up this facade of your’s that you’re always right, just like you were Right about Grudog being our Coach this year. Or you can try to relinquish a bit of your ego and know this. Ronald Jones will be a very good running back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

And all it’s gonna take is one long run for his haters to become his fans.

  27. Dewey Selmon Says:

Good Head Coach? Marvin Lewis has as many playoff wins as Dirk, and been a HC 12 years longer.

  28. FartinMartin Says:

Article’s Title reminded me of Denny Green …….

  29. Pickgrin Says:

Assuming the Defense HAS improved now that Duffner is in charge (and evidenced by much improved play in the Brown’s game) – I say all defensive stats quoted about the Bucs 2018 defense from here on out need to be counted from the 6th game forward.

Otherwise – its going to take all season with improved defensive play to inch those historically bad stats, #s and rankings up towards decent that the Bucs D gave up while Smitty was in charge…

Remember in Late Nov and early December two years ago when we kept hearing “since the bye the Bucs defense has…”

That’s what we need to be hearing this year as well because it will mean vast improvement and a legit playoff run.

  30. Pickgrin Says:

Mixon and AJ Green will get 30 touches between them.

Do a good job defending those 2 players in particular and its an easy win assuming the Bucs offense puts up its new norm of 27+ vs a not so great Bengals Defense.

  31. King C Says:

Two years of drafts with tons of RB talent who can contribute as rookies and the best we could do was Ronald Jones. If GM was unsure about the draft, the least we could have done was sign Carlos Hyde

  32. stpetebucsfan Says:

    King

Yeah the draft was loaded the past two years…how did Dalvin..a player I like btw…do last year? How about Derrius Guice…he’s killing it for the Skins eh…luckily they revived AP’s career throwing to him out of the backfield. Think AP could have made a difference this year for us?

The draft is always a crap shoot…it’s not like going down to Trader Joe’s and ordering up an RB, DE…oh and toss in a couple OL ok.

  33. Reach87 Says:

@dewey… agree. And to backs on wheel and option routes. May need nickel and dime on 2nd and long. Go Bucs!

  34. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    I agree

drafting a RB is one of the hardest positions to evaluate……it’s either hit or miss
