Former Bucs DB Hints What Is Wrong

October 15th, 2018

Offers two cents on Bucs.

Joe has always been a Johnthan Banks fan. He was always good to Joe and Joe thought that a certain coach who now runs a rotten Big Ten team ruined the guy.

Banks is out of football now. He spends most of his time working on his farm and helping coach high school football back in his home state of Mississippi. But Banks is still a Bucs defensive back at heart. He still follows his old team and still has contacts with the team.

So yesterday when the Bucs defense laid down for the Dixie Chicks in the first half, Banks spoke up on Twitter and hinted to what the problem is with the defense.

Feel free to connect the dots here but it seems to Joe that Banks believes guys are defense are not being coached up.

And remember, this isn’t just some guy at the bar. This is a former NFL player, a former cornerback in Mike Smith’s defense.

Not for nothing but the bucs are historically bad, but there are only maybe a handful of elite defenses in the nfl now due to rule changes, i think the union & goodell are doing a disservice to the game w lack of practice and physical contact times, not a whole lot of tackling nor alignment/assignment & technique now, if you want real defensive players who tackle look to georgia, bama, etc, the nfl defense is a bad product as whole BUT at least the bucs are at the top of that list this year!!

  2. Resurrection of Fitz Says:

As long as the DC and scheme are the same the defense will give us the same performance!

As long as Winston keeps missing the deep ball with DJax we will not score over 35 points and games will be lost. But we will make history again by the end of the year with the number one offense and the NUMBER ONE PICK IN THE DRAFT!

  3. lambchop Says:

Bring Banks back. We need the depth at the very least. I don’t blame Ryan Smith for regressing. Julio Jones is a special talent. Ryan Smith should play better against the Browns. I’m expecting him to have a better game. Let’s see.

  4. Resurrection of Fitz Says:

5 Games into the season and a bye week with the same results defensively.

    This is already old news!

Buc fans if you are looking for hope, look else where.

Winston to DJax deep = Wins

  5. Bucsfanman Says:

He’s 100% correct! It makes no sense for this defense to be this bad.
    Coaching, coaching, coaching!

  6. TBTemojin Says:

Random Stat. Matt Ryan threw the ball 41 times, Bucs had ONE pass deflection…..ONE for 41…. Worst part of that stat is the PD came from Carl freaking Nassib!!!!! a rotational Defensive end…. What in the heck are our Defensive backs doing!!!!!!

  7. Fred W Mcneil Says:

    SchittySmitty has got to go

  8. lambchop Says:

There is one common thing going on with the Bucs D and it’s not just Mike Smith sucking. We have a LOT of new pieces on the defense. Totally revamped DL, revamped secondary. 4 rookies at any given time starting. There’s a lot of miscommunication that should have been addressed in pre-season. Injuries are also making things difficult. You just don’t see 4 rookies starting and having a cohesive unit. The VH3 injury was HUGE. Grimes is still not back to form and I’m not really sure he will be. We used to be able to lock down one side of the football field. That’s gone. The LBs are having to make alignment changes and get people in position and also take some risks because the overall cohesiveness is not there.

Why can’t Smitty simplify the defense to Man? Go vanilla but play sound? The bracket with one guy covering elite WRs low while the other covers high is a good tactic. They need to continue that. Give the young guys help. Go back to sound tackling, knowing your assignment, and team speed.

I’m in the mood to analyze and not crucify right now, not sure how long that will last.

  9. Easy Says:

I refuse to watch another Bucs game until Mike Smith is fired

  10. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Yeah well he wouldn’t be the first ex-Buc defender to call out Mike Smith. Rob Ayers and TJ Ward already told us how bad the secondary scheme is.

“Lmao good thing you did.. (bat that pass down) woulda been wide open as usual”

“Well we only ran 2 coverages.. all game all season.. Aint all their fault.. but let me shut up”

  11. Stevbobucsfan Says:

When are the bucs gonna tweak or do something with this defense. Do we die hard fans have to sit through this for 11 more months. It’s getting to be sad at the way this them is playing. At some point I will start to look at ownership Joe can you please give me some insight on what’s wrong in Tampa

  12. SchwiftyBuc Says:

But woohoo they stopped them 3 times in the 3rd Quarter so that means they’re gonna be good again!! The “real” fans know this and still have faith in rotten Mike Smith!

Pfft. Honestly, how long can the Glazer’s and Jason Licht tolerate this piss poor defensive product game in game out? Are they really gonna let it get to the point where we actually break the record for most points ever given up in a season?

Just as Easy mentioned, my pops actually told me the same thing yesterday, he is done with the Bucs until Mike Smith meets the turk.

  13. Darin Says:

Chris Spielman was dogging him out the whole broadcast. If you’re gona get throttled u might as well be aggressive doing it, he said. Ive said, youve all said, everyones said except smith. I’m done. Are we supposed to give him kuddos for making a few second half blitz calls that stopped drives? Or are we supposed to be disgusted he doesnt game plan and lets every team have their way the whole first half? I’m goin with that, checking out. No more watching this mess until smiths gone.

  14. james west Says:

the common thread is mike smith, now i used to be a dirk koetter, jason licht, type of guy after the 9-7 season, but i am way over that now, two seasons of digression under smiths D and koetter and licht refuse to do anything about it, come on glazers let us start again, have a fire sale get rid of the old hangers out, collecters of game checks, the bad coaching and the overhyped overpriced players

  15. Not there yet Says:

This is why I wanted to fire everyone last year. All that self scouting and soul searching, all the changes they made now has the team worse and reverting back to old ways. Oh well can’t play harder at the end of the year and save their jobs this year.

I hope the glazers saw Geraldine a guy they need to move on from and Kwon who wants a contract dancing like idiots while losing and were just as offended as I was

  16. Alanbucsfan Says:

    It’s not just Smith.
Koetter is a good guy, but too soft hearted.
That last call was rediculous. They had time for 2 timing throws to Evans or Godwin in end zone. And this kicker has 2 strikes- miss one more xpoint and goodbye.

  17. BrianBucs Says:

The only reason that the Bucs were in the game at all is because Sanu and Ridley got hurt and went out. When they were both in the game the Falcons score 3 TD’s the first 3 times they had the ball. Could have been a blowout.
It always looks like Mike Smith can’t get it done. But also maybe some of these big name players on defense may be overhyped and overrated.

  18. D-Rome Says:

Joe, how many players has Mike Smith ruined?

it’s true, they were boogie-ing on the sidelines “saturday night fever” style while they were being blown out in the first half…

that was straight crazy man…it was on tv for all to see…

  21. ctord Says:

Joe, there is something wrong with this team as a whole. I don’t know if it’s chemistry, scheme, system, coaching, players, or a combination of all. The bucs have talent but are just unable to pull it all together consistently. perfect example yesterday, march down the field on the first drive, touchdown. missed extra point, buzz kill. D lays a first half egg giving up 24. they play better in the second half, too little too late. Winston starts a comeback AGAIN!! boom, int in the endzone. fluke or not, it just seems as if this team is just snake bit one way or another.

  22. adam from ny Says:

also they were technically supposed to go 0-3 while fitzie was under center…but to everyones surprise they won the first two by a thread…

if things went as they should have, we might just be 0-5 right now…just a thought – a scary – hairy – freakin’ thought!

  23. adam from ny Says:

i hope mccoy sits for a bit…we don’t need him as much as you think we do…

also why do kwon and lavonte showboat after every decent play they make…i would appreciate the opposite on all the plays they miss on…on all missed directions and tackles, they should drop to their knees and pray to God with hands in prayer on every missed play…

ya gotta admit – a whole lotta praying will be going on – people would be like “I didn”t know the bucs were so religious”

  24. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

Bucsfanman My Man!!! It was a good one Bubba. Like Daddy used to tell me ” Sometimes the Ball just Bounces that way!!! It could have as easily bounced in Evans hands for a Touchdown instead of out of bounds. Was a good day in Atlanta. Good luck to you and your Yucs the rest of the way!!!!

  25. Loyaltotheend Says:

37 games and counting of the same BS…

Yet Mike Smith thinks it’s an anomaly when his d is destroyed. Clueless coaches

  26. D-Rome Says:

I’m curious to know how much salary is invested in the defense compared to other teams in the NFL.

  27. adam from ny Says:

someone said the glazers are gonna let the bucs break the record as the all time worst defense in nfl history…if that’s true, we have a major problem – for whatever reason, the glazers simply don’t care…if that’s the case, then the staff and players already know this fact – and it’s just a trickle down effect from the top thru the team…it’s crazy that they’ll just let them be the worst defense in nfl history…someone needs to take the bull by the horns asap – do you thnk the usf bulls can beat the bucs lol lol…how can the glazers just sit back and let this happen…they scored 34 points yesterday and people are raving about how we shut them down in the second half…we didn’t shut them down in the second half…we just kept them from dropping 48 on us

  28. Chris BucTown Says:

    Banks > Ryan Smith

  29. adam from ny Says:

smith gives good podium – and thought if he through in the word “anomaly” people might get impressed…he’s got the bucs playing with monopoly money right now…

  30. adam from ny Says:

    threw*

  31. BigMacAttack Says:

again I was just checking in this morning to see if they were all fired yet. And the woes continue 😂😂😂 and they all get paid.

  32. richbucsfan Says:

I was watching for changes on the D side of the ball, but when they came out in single high safety and playing off the ball it was clear no changes were made. So predictable as seen by Ryan doing what he wanted.

  33. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

Looks like I’ll be helping my wife in our garden on Sundays.

    I’m done.

    Fire Mike Smith.

  34. Bucsfanman Says:

The man, Tandyman! Hey, at least Tandy didn’t do us in!
To quote the greatest football movie EVER, “Oh no! We suck again!”

  35. TOM Says:

    DUFNER!

  36. TOM Says:

Everyone talks about the coaches, players, scheme being bad but I think it stars at the very top. The GLAZERS. First off they don’t know nothing about hiring GM’s or head coaches. Plus I don’t think they care whether they win or lose as long as the $ kees coming in. They should sell the team to someone who cares. Maybe the fans should start boycotting. Maybe more empty seats will wake them up.

  37. Steve Says:

“If your not coaching them up your letting it happen” Nick Saben

  38. PolkFan Says:

Am I the only one that notices whenever we do some funky stunts and twist we get sacks ?? Still the d – line isn’t talented enough. Ravens had 11 sacks yesterday, we have 9 on the year. It won’t happen this year but 3-4 with Vita at nose or buea at nose with Vea @ 34 end. And Noah Spence will be comfortable playing the position he’s supposed to play. McCoy at the other de spot. Kwon and lavonte at mlb and I say we have something. The reason why this doesn’t work is because we have too much money invested into Jpp and vinny. But from what I see it’s other people getting pressure like Carl Nassib and Jpp cleans it up imo. Get mike smith out of there and promote Buckner

  39. PolkFan Says:

And for the secondary , oh good lord I would start Carlton and Ryan Smith. No need to play Grimes he’s washed, no need to play the old guy anymore, smith getting more playtime only makes him better and when conte comes back Whitehead should stay because once again experience is the best teacher

  40. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Ryan Smith will get lit up again on Sunday he cant cover any of the browns WRs, they have a top flight group, duke johnson will run wide open wheel routes on evans or LVD all day, look at this game as baker mayfield coming out party

  41. Anonymous Says:

Trade D-Jax and GMC to Cardianals for Patrick Peterson!!!

  42. Buccfan37 Says:

I’m concerned that the Bucs may be a team in consideration for a move to London. That would make me a raving lunatic if so.

  43. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

All I can think of is that the combo of rookie backfield and vets accustomed to losing (they realize win or lose their game check is the same) are the root cause. Smith’s scheme seems to emphasize trying to stop the run at the expense of getting gashed in the passing game, so having inexperienced DB’s in the game can produce extra ugly results against good offenses like the Falcons (in the dome). Is what it is at this point…just have to hope the younger DB’s get better as they get more play time.

  44. LargoBuc Says:

One has to wonder if the defense believes in Mike Smith and what he’s asking of them at this point. If this dosen’t change fast it’s going yo be another lost season. And we all know what that means.

That’s the rub..The Glazers make the money if no one shows up in the seats. Fans in stadiums are just “extras” in the TV show, as another poster said. THat carries through to the rest of the team. They get paid, win or lose.

I threw this out there yesterday..Take the TV revenue and award it to the teams based on how they finish. Better teams get a bigger piece of the pie. The worst teams get less, enough to meet the salary cap and expenses and small profits depending on their record. Owners get to keep ticket and stadium rev’s, which might encourage them to put fans in seats with reasonable ticket prices.

While I know that will never happen, it would be great if owners had some incentive to make their teams accountable. Money is all they care about so hit ’em where it hurts.

  46. Brandon Says:

Too many guys to make Pro Bowls and play on excellent defenses for them all to forget how to play good defense in one offseason. There is one common bond… Mike Smith. His defenses sucked in Atlanta and he ran through coordinators like most teams run through punt returners. He is not fit for the NFL.

  47. rrsrq Says:

He must think that Bradley McDougal is still on the back end. BTW, is Keith Tandy still on the Falcons?

  48. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

rrsrq……Yep saw them play yesterday in Atlanta!!! Playing on Special Teams. No action in the Defensive Backfield … Haven’t figured that out yet as they are allowing about 40 points a game so far. Wish they had of fired Smith last year and maybe he would still be in Tampa and god knows the Bucs need him with all your injury’s and deficiencies in your Defensive Backfield.

  49. xhotwingsx Says:

I always thought Banks was a better than average corner. He got chewed up by the system here and did not seem to recover. What a story if he came back to the Bucs and contributed.

  50. Tc Says:

To think that the Bucs passed on Minkah Fitzpatrick and Derwin James. Sure could of used them in the defensive backfield.

  51. Mike Johnson Says:
