“I Didn’t Bring In Three People To Help Gerald”

October 8th, 2018

Bucs defensive line coach Brentson Buckner, a man who enjoys speaking his mind, isn’t a stats guy.

No, Joe isn’t referring to analytics and the sometimes mindless stats glorified accountants and computer programmers pump out. Buckner is talking about individual sacks and just plain individual play.

Today, a few Bucs assistant coaches were available for questions and one was Buckner, who when asked about individual players make it clear he’s not concerned with box scores. Instead, Buckner wants team results.

“The only stats I care about are the ones in the ‘W’ and ‘L’ columns,” Buckner said. He later added, “If you are here and you are in that [Bucs defensive linemen meeting] room and you are getting a check with the Bucs’ signature on it, you are here to play. If you are in there and you are breathing, you play football. And that’s the way we are taught. That’s their mindset.

“I didn’t bring three people here to help Gerald [McCoy]. I want cats here to help the Bucs win. That’s how you play. I don’t have tackles. I don’t have ends. I have football players. If we have to go with Vinny [Curry] and JPP [Jason Pierre-Paul] down there [at tackle], our standards are our standards.”

Buckner had all sorts of good things to say. Internationally famous JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman asked Buckner what he says to defensive end Noah Spence if he asks for playing time and Buckner replied that he should keep working.

When Ira asked Buckner if he sympathized with Spence because he too was once a young NFL defensive lineman, Buckner replied, “I was good, too.”

    Starting to sound like a campaign…. #Buckner4DC19

If he was coordinator in 2019 I don’t think he would hesitate to move on from Geraldine. I wonder what potential head coach out there would consider keeping Monken/Duffner/Buckner and wide receivers coach skyler Fulton, everyone else should walk the plank if they can’t get this kind of team to the playoffs.

  3. Jim Says:

    A serious guy…good.

  4. Dlavid Says:

Koetter is gone …. hopefully our next head coach will be like Buckner .

–unless it’s about Jameis Winston, right Joe??? Haha!!!

  6. RobertG Says:

Guy has never been a NFL cordinator and already you so called fans are giving him the team.
    Pathetic

  7. jmarkbuc Says:

    Keep Duffner?

Why? Linebacker play has not been nearly good enough in a long time and definitely not in the last three years… I don’t see him winning any position coach of the year awards.

IMO, everyone should slow their roll on Buckner too. I like his attitude but “this is a results oriented business” This Dline ain’t the fearsome foursome just yet.

Sound Bites don’t make a head coach.

  8. unbelievable Says:

Does Buckner know how to coach linebackers and the secondary?

Cuz that’s where our biggest problems lie right now.

  9. unbelievable Says:

Agreed jmark the line has a lot of room for improvement too. Though it does seem like the best unit of the 3 on defense so far this season (which isn’t saying much).

  10. Pryda...sec 147 Says:

This will be a test for our team I think we rise to the occasion Jameis turned the corner last year let’s see what he can do for 12 games

  11. Bucnjim Says:

Here we start the posturing to support McCoy since the original is being flushed down the toilet. The ENTIRE off season and for years before that we were fed the propaganda that if McCoy only had help he would tear the entire league up. Well here we are again with not only help but a player (JPP) who is out hustling and out preforming. So if we add JJ Watt and Aaron Donald I’m sure then he would be a Superstar!

  12. Bucnjim Says:

    Unbelievable,
The Bears QB could have taken a shot of Fireball, pissed and walked back to the pocket and still not gotten pressured to throw but you think it’s on the LB’s and secondary?

  13. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

Can’t win with a 100 million dollar quitting cryin clown with no mental toughness nor desire yo be great. Imagine if she had the same passion for football as playing with dolls.

  14. Bucnjim Says:

After reading several of his statements today the Noticable thing missing was any praise whatsoever for McCoy. Seems that the only player in his eyes playing worth a SH!T is JPP. Of course anyone who watches the games can see for themselves.

  15. unbelievable Says:

    Bucnjim-

The line got pressure a few times. Not enough of course, but they were also going 4 against 7 on the majority of snaps.

The LBs and secondary on the other hand, did absolutely nothing. Like I said before:

“best unit of the 3 on defense so far this season (which isn’t saying much).”

  16. Zwak Says:

Sounds like he wants a promotion!

  17. Ryan McGregor Says:

REPORT: Bucs coaching staff didn’t gameplan during BYE week, rehearsed coach speak instead.

  18. Pistol Pete Says:

Gotta say that Spence isn’t getting any traction and I am bummed. Had flashes early on and just can’t seem to get and stay healthy, also needs more than one move. I like Buckner’s attitude.

  19. FairMinded Says:

@jmarkbuc “sound bytes don’t make a head coach” – by that token they should make you a starting corner because you swiped that sentence right off my keyboard before I could spit it out!

    Some fans man smh

  20. DB55 Says:

I’m thinking maybe the problem wasn’t Jay Hayes or Schiano or Raheem.

There has only been one constant.

Oh wait it was Baker yea that’s the ticket, it was Baker and Ayers. And in Jan it will be JPP and Curry even if JPP gets 16 sacks, yea that’s the ticket.

  21. SB Says:

I have to say that in my 42 plus yrs of following the Bucs with a Die-Hard mentality that some of you are right. We do have one of the most ignorant, fair-weathered, and myopic fanbase in the NFL.

  22. Doug Says:

Gerald McCoy is a total loser, he’s the total opposite of a leader. We need to move on he’s a waste of cap space. James Connor ran straight through his gap to seal the win.

  23. DB55 Says:

Just finished listening to his pc, Buckner is impressive. Smart guy who knows his stuff.

I thought the best part was when he said you have to be violent and have the mentality that no one can block you.

  24. SB Says:

Hey Doug………Define ‘total loser’. Then look at the accolades in your life and rank them.
    SMH

  25. Mike Johnson Says:

Please send all campaign contribution to Buc One Place, Tamoa, Fl.

  26. RODNEY J ALLEN Says:

SB ur right it just sad what some so called fans biatch n complain about especially when its about our players that r pros SMMFH

  27. Dewey Selmon Says:

Sounds bites might not make a coach but they sure helped John McKay. “Couple of planes crashes and we’re in the playoffs”. lol

  28. Not there yet Says:

Why keep Duffner are you serious, is that a real question. What are you trying to tell me that lvd who’s played like 6 seasons and is one of the team captains and played for what 3 coordinators then Kwon who beat out a veteran linebacker as a rookie are not the problem? Your actually saying that those two guys aren’t playing well because of Duffner? That sounds stupid since they are rookies. It’s the players and the scheme. That position coaching excuse only works for the dB coach. It’s really stupid to insinuate Duffner should fall on the sword because this scheme makes two decent guys look like below average linebackers

  29. Doug Says:

Hey SB, while I don’t care to share my personal accolades on this website. I will inform you that they were not handed to me, unlike 93. I will also inform you that I do not take plays off, unlike 93. I do not disappear in big moments, unlike 93. I do not get blown out of my position repeatedly, unlike 93. I do not look for people to feel sorry for me, unlike 93. Etc.

  30. unbelievable Says:

Doug how many snaps did you log last week while you were ‘not taking plays off’? And who was your opponent?

    Asking for a friend.

  31. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Mason Foster & DJ Swearinger not good enough to play for the bucs, great talent evalustor jason licht oh and derwin james passed 2x

  32. Lamarcus Says:

Buckner is just doing his job and like JJP and Curry probably shell shocked from the blowout.

I see we run the same pick play where one DT picks and GMC goes around the pick to free him up. It’s overrused. Then the opposing oline just steps in the way and at this point we doing 1 on 1s and the ball gets out quicker. I always said getting corners will help us the most and Cbs more important than defense lineman.

  33. BushidoEvans Says:

^They both got their fare share of blowouts with their previous teams, stop acting like the giants and eagles have been dynasties for the past decade.

  34. BigMacAttack Says:

Congratulations Drew Brees! Greatest of all time! I sure wish he played for us. I love that guy, and hate the Saints 😂

    ……………..

You don’t take plays off because you are too busy asking “Would you like fries with that order”
Any Fool that calls one of the best DTs in the game a Loser is Exactly that.
Just go support the Jags or Dolphins please and quit contaminating this board wth just more Loser opinions. We don’t need you.

  36. SB Says:

    Lol UB.
I just now saw your comment.
    Kudos!

  37. THETRUTH Says:

Doug: go back to lead your fantasy team to last place finish. You know nothing about the game and instead of hiding that fact you put it on blast. Haha

Your probably dumb enough to pick Bucs as your defense in fantasy and are pissed about.

Go read McCoy’s stats and see where he is ranked from his time in league with others since than than report back !!

  38. SB Says:

“Go read McCoy’s stats and see where he is ranked from his time in league with others since than than report back !!”

    ______

Unfortunately for us Truth, we have fans that think Reggie White won Green Bay a SB and GMC should do the same.
Myopia can only be reversed by Lasik or thick lenses.
Or a huge knock on the noggin.

  39. Dennisb Says:

Evans ducked McCoy after the scope and score. Secondary blaming the line, the line the secondary . It can’t be our linebackers

  40. richbucsfan Says:

    Blah, blah, blah…Zzzzzzzzzzz

  41. Defense Rules Says:

Wow! Some Bucs’ fans actually get it. Improving the defense isn’t really as simplistic as screaming “FIRE MIKE SMITH” or “MAKE BUCKNER OR DUFFNER THE DC” or “GMC SUCKS”.

I’m really hopeful that this BYE week will give our defense time to heal up and pull things together. Still can’t figure out what happened in Chicago (to our defense AND our offense), but I’m confident BOTH sides of the ball can play MUCH better than that. To me it looked like bad play-calling in combination with very poor execution … a disastrous combination obviously. But BOTH are fixable, and this Sunday’s game will be a critical test IMO for how the rest of this season turns out. IF we continue to make the same mistakes we did in Chicago, we’re probably looking at a 4-12 season. IF we pull it together and stand tall, an 8-8 or maybe 9-7 season might be possible. (Saints & Panthers are rolling right now, so it’s hard to see us beating either of them out for a playoff spot).

  42. Bucsfanman Says:

Bad d-line play? Sure, lump GMC in that category. So far, I have no problem with that.
    Bad LB play? GMC
    Bad CB play? GMC
Bad safety play? GMC….yeah! Some of you have really missed your calling as comedians. Truly.

  43. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Doug… complete waste of a commenter. Please go back to wherever you came from. We couldn’t care less what you do for a living.

  44. Doug Says:

If you drink 93’s Kool aid, I can do nothing but assume you are a sheep in the herd. Am I calling 93 the worse DT in the league? No. Am I calling 93 the worse DT on the bucs 53? No. Am I saying 93 is overpaid? Most certainly. Are there others to blame? Most certainly. If you are the highest paid player on a defense that continues to fail as consistently as the bucs do, you may be subject to some criticism. Especially, when you have never stopped the run with any ounce of consistency. Especially, when majority of your career sacks have happened in garbage time. (Bucs have found themselves in that situation a lot) Especially, when we have not seen 93 take control of a possession, quarter, half let alone a game. Stay thirsty my friends. #Fitzgreggor

  45. Destinjohnny Says:

19 is the deepest derisive line draft ever
I don’t think Jason can even mess this one up

  46. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Doug, the reason I worded it the way that I did is that the biggest problem I have with your initial post is to call Gerald “a waste.” — That is incredibly disrespectful to someone of Gerald’s caliber as a player and as a person that has given his heart & soul to this franchise and to Tampa Bay for over 7 years. It definitely has nothing to do with “drinking koolaid”. It is about RESPECT.

  47. Jmarkbuc Says:

    SB

With all due respect, isn’t “fair weather” Buc Fan an oxymoron….

In my 42 years of watching, I don’t recall a whole lot of sunny days..

Mostly cloudy with a chance of thunderstorms.

  48. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    Great point, Jmarkbuc, haha!

By simply BEING a Tampa Bay Buccaneer fan, it is impossible to be labeled “fair weather”!
