“Defense Has No Room For Being Soft”

October 18th, 2018

Tough talk

In Duff We Trust.

There’s a new motto for the Tampa Bay defense, tied to new defensive coordinator Mark Duffner after his predecessor, Mike Smith, wreaked havoc on innocent Bucs fans.

So what will the Duffner defense be like?

Nobody knows, though the obvious answer is a somewhat different approach than what failed repeatedly for Smith. No status woe.

Speaking yesterday, Duffner brought a smile to Joe when he said the following: “I think aggressive and physical is what we’ve got to be on defense. Defense has no room for being soft.”

Smith talked about physicality, too, and it was a featured theme for Smith when he was head coach of the Falcons as seen in the 2015 edition of Hard Knocks. But he didn’t get the results.

Duffner should get a clean slate from Bucs fans, and Joe hopes Duffner is empowered by Dirk Koetter to bring a new level of accountability to the defense. If there’s no room for soft, then start benching everybody who shows up soft.

Yeah, that’s the problem. Mike Smith told everyone to play soft.

  2. Ludicrous Speed Says:

You’ve got to ask yourself one question…

Are you ready to get Duffed?

    Ohh Yeahhh Duffman

  3. Lord Cornelius Says:

    Just please don’t give 15 yard cushions on 3rd and 10. That’s a start.

Also lot of people seem to be banking on the Browns running it down our throat.
We’re top 5 in rushing YPC given up. It’s literally been the only thing we’ve been good at lol. We’ve actually forced a lot of 2nd and 3rd and longs -but the pass D has been historically bad.

The Browns should start featuring Nick Chubb more imo. Hyde hasn’t been as productive although whenever I watch them he looks like a solid back. DJ is a great 3rd down back.

I’m scared of Jarvis Landry and open slants all day much more than their run game. Or David Njoku on any of our LBs who have been bad in coverage.

  4. Bucsfanman Says:

“No room for being soft” COACHING either. As a long-time Bucs fan I am so sick of the lack of accountability this team has shown year after year top to bottom. Smitty’s firing was one year too late and everybody knows it.
It’s time to stop talking and start fixing, not now, RIGHT NOW!
    C’mon Duff! Rally the troops!

  5. jjuice 32 Says:

    Joe-
Everybody who is “the know” says there is a deeper problem w/ this D then just Smitty. You have any idea what or who that would be and are his initials GM.

  6. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

benching soft players would piss off mricecream’s number one apologist Joe in a big way…. be careful what you ask for joe…. well good thing she’s hurt once again… next comes the pitty party and same ole mantra from apologists he plays hurt…. pansy arse is always hurt. he wakes up hurt… doll playing is a rough sport I guess.

  7. LakeLand Says:

The Browns won’t run the ball down the Bucs throat. What they do is mix it up, with runs and short passes. I have watched them maybe 3-4 times this season. Todd Haley tries to balance the offense.

  8. Etzel Says:

MJ Stewart’s last interview, he alluded that the cushion given by the DB’s was more of an individual decision, than on coaching/scheme. Translation? No bueno.

  9. Wausa Says:

I think us fans as a whole would rather see the defense be aggressive and get torched then play soft and still get torched.

If the Duffner is aggressive and the Bucs still cant cover and still cant get to the QB, we will know it more of a player problem than coach problem.

  10. Lunchbox Says:

Yes! Bench ANYBODY that deserves to be benched. I don’t care what crazy color your hair is, or who your wife is, or who your favorite superhero is. Whoever you are, if you play soft, you ride the pine. What a novel concept.

  11. 813bucboi Says:

defense got better once smitty left the building…..with that said, don’t except the defense to turn into the 85bears over night…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  12. ATrain Says:

I bet the problem is there is a rift in the lockerroom

    Two different thoughts of playing

JPP is of the thought play hard every down and get the QB

McCoy is of the thought get to the bank quickly and help the QB up

  13. Mike Says:

Thi LB coach is part of the problem
    Clean house

  14. budbuc Says:

@ Mike… The LB coach is the new DC… Just sayin!

  15. adam from ny Says:

when the defense is dancing like girls on the sidelines, the offensive line, led by jensen and marpet should simply just rush up on them like men, and start snuffing the sh*t out of them…an all out in team sideline brawl – where the offense revolts on the defense would be hot – and deserving…add in our 3 tight ends to help whip some serious ass…and i’d expect alan cross to get ill too…teach this defense to stop acting like punks…

no one would touch jpp tho…they know better

  16. adam from ny Says:

the glazers have been spotted in aisle 8 at publics today…shopping for pretzels and for coaches

  17. Mike Johnson Says:

I want to give Duf his chance. And like everybody here, I’m rootin for him. I hope he has some different schemes and approaches. Remember, he was part of that Smitty Defensive coaching cancer. We just want to see some improvement gradually. Just give our Offense a fighting chance. Thats all. Can’t wait for Sunday. Just about 10 to 20% improvement? Is that asking to much?

  18. Pryda...sec 147 Says:

Play Noah Spence if he isn’t hurt play him he can’t be worst than what we’re getting at the moment he has shown flashes !!

  19. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Um Adam

    You seem really into snuffing..

When the D is on the sidelines dancing the O is on the field….

  20. JimmyJack Says:

When’s the last turnover we got?

  21. orlbucfan Says:

I wonder how much the players especially on defense contributed to Smith’s firing? Say whatever but these players are competitive. Or they wouldn’t play ball. Smith was hamstringing them. Sunday will answer a few questions.

  22. El_Buc941 Says:

Sounds to me like we should expect press man coverage!about Buc’in time! Press the recievers and make the QB hold the ball long enough for our line to get to him!

  23. Coburn Says:

I think we need to temper our expectations a bit. It’s not realistic to expect our entire defense to look differentially after one week of taking over the job. If anything we should be looking back at the end of the year to see if things started to turn up in the last few games.

  24. buc15 Says:

    great… now Im hard

  25. BucEmUp Says:

There are two different types of soft. Mentally and schematically. Here in Tampa they coach both. Talk is cheap coach. If you want your players to act like men, treat them like men. Play press man coverage, hold everyone accountable. Take the fingers pointing out of the equation and play tough tight coverage. Hit the guys, blitz, disguise blitzes, fake blitzes jump around like animals and screw with their minds a little bit. Not just sit there in soft cover 2 and stair straight ahead until the ball is snapped and then watch a beautiful pass hit a wide open wr and THEN try and make a play.

Its almost as if they coach more about what to do after a pass is converted rather than how to prevent a pass from being converted. Mind numbing

  26. Posey99 Says:

Soft coverage, soft defense, I’m sorry, let me help you up, we’ll get them next time… Who would have thought; a weak defense in Tampa.

  27. Brad Says:

Does he mean saying sorry after hitting a QB?

  28. lewis Says:

BUCS WILL GET BLOWN UP BY THE BROWNS ITS TOO LATE FOR ANY CRAZY TALK WE ARE 5/11 TEAM AT BEST AND THE BUCS NEED NEW LEADERSHIP IN ALL AREAS

  29. pelbuc Says:

Too many check cashers and dancers on the defense. After we lose to the Browns, start playing Cichy at LB and Spence at DL to see what they have, since we already know what the other duds do on defense.” Clean house” party starts on Monday. Please trade GMC and Kwon before the deadline!

  30. Bobby M. Says:

So if Duffner doesn’t show much improvement….at what point do we recognize that Licht doesn’t know how to build a team? How many defensive coaches have to get fired at this point? Rarely do teams go through 4 coordinators under one GM in 5 yrs. Remember Lovie took control from his hand picked DC…..Lovie was fired….Smith was then hired. Now Smith is canned and Duffner is promoted.

    The common denominator is Licht.

  31. LakeLand Says:

    Bobby M

    I totally agree

    100%

  32. Dooshlarue Says:

    Atrain

I think you may be right.
JPP brings fire and needs to be the leader of the D.
McSoftie93 needs to be traded for whatever we can get.
McCoy has been the one constant for all these terrible, soft defenses and you really have to be blind……. or Hawaiian, not to be able to see that.

  33. SOEbuc Says:

Sounds like more LB blitzing and hopefully somewhat man coverage to stop the old 10-yard hook for first down for 90 yards.

Koetter couldn’t run a HS girl’s flag football defense so he better let Duff-man try to control and change it up.

  34. Reach87 Says:

You folks talking about how hard someone plays should do yourself a favor and actually check the tape instead of stupidly jumping on the bandwagon of a moron. McCoy goes harder than anyone on the team in practice and games. Stop making up stuff. Also, for those who think he sucks because he helps people up, check out the Bears/dolphins, cowboys last game, and 49r game last week. What do you see? Go Bucs!

  35. Bucsalltheway Says:

Always been a fan of duff beer definitely feeling anyone but Mike Smith lol

  36. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    Reach87 Says:

your boy has been a proven fraud for a decade and is nothing more than the face of the basement years… you can’t rewrite history nor on field results because you have a mancrush on a loser.

  37. Bucdon40 Says:

I have never been an apologist or “soft” on any of our players. I just want to see them play to win!!! When it comes to GM, I have always thought he has given his all. But, I am beginning to think that he is way too soft, and I have Been lead to believe, through “Joe” that it is not him. IT IS HIM, HE NEEDS TO BE TOUGH, AND WANT TO WIN, WAETHER IT HURTS PEOPLE OR NOT. WHO CARES ABOUT THE OTHER TEAM!!!!! We need to win at all cost!!!!!

    JUST WIN!!!!!!!!!!

    Just my opinion,
